Writing/ classroom ambience. How do I say, "Enjoy 8 hours of testing ambience?" The thought of testing conjures up traumas of past educational failures. And I'm not talking about having the test slapped on the desktop before me with "F" scratched out in red marker. I'm talking "permanent record" here. My invisible collection of abject failures that I was led to believe followed me everywhere. I imagined a shadow network that handed off my permanent record wherever I went. There would be a back room with a filing cabinet waiting to temporarily house it. Where it waited for me to screw up. I still feel its presence today. There may be some backroom in my house my family hasn't warned me of. Perhaps the neighbors are some kind of "Adjustment Bureau" for my CATs, SATs, and ACTs. So, yeah, no — this ambience isn't about a make or break test. Let's imagine we're in class, and everyone else is studious because they're so smug about going somewhere in this world. And we are at the back of the class drawing Too Much Coffee Man or writing an amazing short story while everyone is being ambitious. And for me, it wasn't an amazing short story. It was a **** short story that was only short because I couldn't figure out how to get my awesome Mack Bolan-esque character out from the clutches of the cartel's trap deep in a jungle. (Which was totally stolen from Clear and Present Danger). "There's nowhere left to run, Blaze Tower," said the short man grasping a half-smoldered cigar. This was Blaze Tower's nemesis, a man everyone called Martillo (to be played by Miguel Sandoval in the inevitable movie). Martillo had been responsible for the death of Blaze's family; they had been bystanders in a park. A picnic turned to panic by errant crossfire and totally ripped off from Frank Castle's origin. (RIP my media diet in the 90s… I heard my parents regularly remark, "At least he's reading something.”) Bluh—where were we? Oh yes... relaxing at the back of the class. Original photo by Pixabay

“The Greatest Thanksgiving Special” is Ed, Bill, and the returning Ron Swallow talking about pieces of pop culture we are thankful to have experienced at particular times in our lives. These are some of the art and the culture around said art that would form us into the weirdos you know and love. Ed talks Mack Bolan novels, Ron talks rollerblading and skate videos, while Bill reveals a past as a prominent purveyor of fan fiction in the early days of the internet. Thanks to all the people listening and to our Patrons. For you, we are eternally thankful.

MAFIA, MURDERS, MOLLS, AND MAYHEM The wheels on the Syndicate's deadliest racket – taking over unions to leverage the old protection racket on whole industries – have begun to steam-roll over the shipping business in the quiet California town of Pacific Port. They send an S.O.S. for the one-man army – P.I. and ex-spy, Morocco Jones. His name is whispered in secret, and in awe – from Budapest to Bangkok, from Copenhagen to Cairo to Kansas City, Mo. He's the toughest, smartest operator ever to work and survive the roughest racket of them all – overseas counterespionage. He's the guy who rocked the Mafia on its heels in Chicago, the guy who took Border City's underworld apart with his bare hands. The man who's come to take the Cosa Nostra by the throat and end it once and for all. If he survives the baited, one-woman death trap called "the Syndicate's Golden Angel." The final book in the classic series that took the war to the Mafia a decade before the debut of Mack Bolan, The Executioner.

CLICK LINK FOR YOUR OWN COPY MOROCCO JONES CHALLENGES THE MAFIA IN A KILL OR BE KILLED NOVEL OF MURDER, MOLLS AND MAYHEM The Syndicate made a big mistake when they murdered Chris Shane because Shane was the man who had saved Morocco from torture and death at the hand of a despot's most savage secret agent back in Eastern Europe during the war — his best friend and the man to whom he owed his life. No bunch of gun-happy gorillas could scare a guy like Morocco. Five years of slugging it out with tyrants, Nazis and Commies in the savage slums of Europe's underworld had fashioned him into six feet of human dynamite — a powerful friend, a ruthless enemy. Morocco was going after Shane's killers even if it meant taking the Syndicate apart with his bare hands. In one swift motion Morocco hooked his steely fingers into the collar of the man nearest him. There was a sickening thud as the man's head struck the bar. The second hood whirled, but Morocco's powerful arms snaked out and caught him with a smashing blow across the throat. The third man was still clawing for his gun when Morocco grabbed his wrists and flung him against a booth. Morocco's green eyes were burning like a tiger's. "I've got a message for your boss. Tell him the honeymoon is over. Tell him to find a cyclone cellar to hide in. Tell him Morocco Jones is in town." Another no-holds-barred suspense-packed 1960s classic adventure of the man whose mind is as sharp as the edge of lightning and whose fists are as deadly as a forty-five — for fans of Mack Bolan, the Executioner, Elvis Cole and Jack Reacher.
There’s something fishy about the murder in this episode. Novelist W. M. Akers joins us to talk about Murder Under Glass, an episode from the final season of the original NBC run of Columbo featuring Louis Jourdan as a food critic and, of course, a murderer. It is maybe not the most perfect episode, but well worth a visit for the variations on the formula—people are actually happy to see the good Lieutenant for once, and he gets to show off some serious culinary skills. We also get to talking about Will’s own mystery novels. Somehow, we wind up talking about Mack Bolan, the Executioner, of all things. And role playing games. And baseball. Oh, and there’s a little touch of film noir right at the start… David J. Loehr with W. M. Akers.

Because sometimes there's a man, we won't say a hero, but what is a hero, anyway, who can take skycabs down the mean streets without himself becoming mean, because sometimes we need a hero, are holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night, but we don't need another hero, it's time for William Shatner's TekLab! Like a cuddly Mike Hammer, or a Mack Bolan who wages a lonely war against evil but still remembers to call his girlfriend at the end of the day, TekLab protagonist Jake Cardigan is just the thing to slip into if you're looking for something comfy. Action! is the name of the game here, but not so much action that you'll get upset or anything. Intrigue! abounds, but is mostly reserved to "Hey, remember when we used to be enemies?" conversations, so don't feel like you have to take notes or pay all that much attention. Wisecracks! are everywhere, but they're not exactly zingers, so relax: you are more than welcome to join this battle of wits even if you're essentially unarmed. It's an enjoyable, easy read, and we hope you'll enjoy loping along with us. NOTE: Yes, we know Shatner said some stupid things on Twitter recently; No, we don't particularly care. He didn't even write the book, people, and if you really need to take your political cues from an elderly Canadian, might we suggest Margaret Atwood or somebody? Recommendations: TekWar! Music: "Back to the Grill" by MC Serch "Pure Energy" by Information Society "Don't Sweat the Technique" by Erik B. and Rakim
If you like your sex scenes extremely long and your gunplay extremely every single chapter, then you just may be the target audience for Against the Mafia: The Executioner, Book 1, the legendary piece of action-trash that introduced Mack Bolan to an extremely unsuspecting world. From chapters like "A Master's Stroke" and "God-Damn Iron-Man Bolan" (not kidding) to "The Goof", "Forecast: Warmer Tonight and Tomorrow", and "Execution Hill", J. and Collision dance madly backwards through the raging river of fear that powered the writing of this book, a terrified look at a completely unrecognizable 1969 America, a cringing fantasy of one tall-ass man with lots of long-ass long guns (and knives) standing up for families and righteousness and shooting people who get in your way and banging one whole lot of ladies. New segments! Bizarre word choices! Some of the mannest manning any book ever manned! Philosophy lectures! Incredibly angry diary entires! EXPLOSIONS AND FUCK YOUR HELICOPTERS! If you ever caught yourself wishing "I wish somebody had written Scruples, but for dudes", step right up. We do need to mention explicitly: this book is a very aggressive ode to a sniper; it also contains a lot of bizarre speculations about sex work. If that sounds like something you'd have a hard time with (at this point in history, or just at all), we definitely understand and understand if you want to give this episode a pass. Recommendations: Rosa Lyster, The Best Time I Pretended I Hadn’t Heard of Slavoj Žižek Jensen Karp, Kanye West Owes Me $300: And Other True Stories from a White Rapper Who Almost Made It Big Music: "Violent School" by Dead Milkmen "Mayor" by Pharoahe Monch "Sexecutioner" by GWAR "No Way Back" by Adonis
