Whether it be loneliness, solitude, finding sanctuary in a stifled relationship or waiting for a takeaway meal, or maybe one of the most precious things of all, the comfort in creating for ones self, Kaite Fitz is shifting how we see ourselves on screen. Her short film Smoke, which premiered at the St Kilda Film Festival, presents Lianne Mackessy's main character, a woman who moves through her day, quietly being hollowed out by a void that's emerging within her. Her relationship exists, but it's more of an idea than anything else, yoga becomes an event tinged with friction. Her work, restoring art, is a rare sanctuary. The title, Smoke, alludes to the lingering presence of something burnt, the smell of the past hanging into the future. Sometimes this is a comforting smell, like incense, or sometimes it's a smell that heralds a lie or the smothering of truth, like the lingering haze of cigarettes.Kaite is an emerging Australian filmmaker who presents women who live familiar lives, rolling forward on a continuing existence that persists in the face of stagnation. We rarely see these characters on screen because we're so rarely invited to hear from and engage with women storytellers who present real people on screen. It's no surprise then that Kaite looks to filmmakers like Kelly Reichardt or Alena Lodkina as inspirations for the work that she's doing. In the following interview, Kaite talks about her creative process, about having learned from filmmaker Michael Rowe, working with producer Miki Clarke, the notion of truth on screen, as well as exploring what her creative voice looks like on screen with films like Smoke, and in her as yet unproduced feature screenplay Peachy. This interview is part of the ongoing series of emerging filmmakers who are part of the rising swell of Australian filmmakers. These are storytellers who are collectively, yet singularly, shaping what the Australian film oeuvre looks like, feels like, and sounds like. In turn, they are forming a new language for Australian cinema, shaping what stories are being told, how they're being presented, and much more.Follow us on Instagram, Facebook, and Bluesky @thecurbau. Peaches may not be the first fruit you think of in Wisconsin, but cold-hardy varieties allow farms like Creek Bed Farmacy in Poynette to grow them successfully. Farmer Julie Schoeneberg says the trees thrive on the farm’s rolling hills, which provide good drainage, and southern Wisconsin’s climate offers the “chill units” peaches need to set buds. While last year’s crop was wiped out by a sudden freeze, this year brought a “perfect winter” and an abundant harvest. Schoeneberg says caring for the orchard means monitoring soil pH, balancing nutrients, and pruning each spring to keep the trees healthy and productive. Visitors can enjoy the harvest firsthand by picking their own peaches at the farm. This stop is part of our series spotlighting specialty crops, in collaboration with the Wisconsin Agricultural Tourism Association, which helps farmers grow their operations into destinations. This podcast series is brought to you courtesy of Specialty Crop Block Grant 23-10. Chile… friendships were tested, secrets were spilled, and Drew's man is still trying to snatch her name like it's a Birkin on clearance! This week on The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Shamea finally told Porsha how she really feels, Angela's whole family wants out — including her mama and her man — and Drew? She's crying, lawyering up, and locked out the house. And I couldn't break it all down without a real journalist in the mix — joining me is People Magazine's very own Nate Vinson! Get comfortable, because the shade came in cream this episode, and we've got a LOT to unpack.
Support the showToday I speak with Lauren Wood, a (super brave) third year Human Services student at Northeastern University in Boston, passionate about social justice, equal mental health access, and (naturally) suicide prevention. Lauren opens up about losing her dear friend Coble to suicide when she was just a senior in high school—an event that shattered her world and changed the trajectory of her life. Now, years later, she is leaning into the hard work of healing while actively building a future in advocacy and mental health support. She shares "I am incredibly honored to share my sweet friend Coble's memory through Melissa's incredible platform". Likewise, Lauren, I am incredibly honored to have had this conversation. With honesty, vulnerability, and grace, she brings her voice to this conversation—keeping Coble's light alive while illuminating the often-silent journey of grief that young people carry. This is a conversation about love, loss, growing up too soon, and the power of reclaiming joy.In this episode, we discuss:
This talk is based on Galatians 3:14."He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit."
[DONATE] This episode of The Collective US, produced by the Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency (NMCAA), centers around the theme of advocacy and its critical role in community action. Hosts Erica Austin and Ryan Buck speak with board members Peachy Rentenbach and Sam Getsinger, who share personal stories and insights into how they became involved with NMCAA and why advocacy matters.Peachy, a former restaurant owner, joined the NMCAA board to support food programs like Meals on Wheels, leveraging her background in human ecology and teaching. Sam, whose early life was marked by instability and poverty, credits public education and community support programs for shaping her success. She speaks passionately about economic justice, early childhood education, and the moral imperative to advocate for those in need. The discussion emphasizes:The importance of personal stories in effective advocacy. The need to humanize and demystify advocacy, especially in small communities.Actionable steps for community involvement, from attending public meetings to calling elected officials. The threats posed by federal budget cuts to essential programs like Head Start, LIHEAP, and food assistance.A deep commitment to equity, empathy, and connection, framing community as both local and global. The episode also highlights NMCAA's large impact in the region, employing over 350 people, many in Head Start. The guests underscore that advocacy is rooted in heart, and that maintaining optimism, persistence, and community spirit can drive meaningful change. The show ends with reflections on legacy, community impact, and a call to action for listeners to get involved and support NMCAA's mission.
First, a follow-up to yesterday's show as both Cobb Democrats won their special elections to serve on that county's commission, putting Democrats (again) in control of that county's governance (despite all the efforts at the state GOP level to undo the will of the majority). Also, after having a grousing parent removed from a school board hearing a little more than a week ago for bending the knee to the Trump administration and eliminating their D.E.I. initiatives, Decatur City Schools undid that, much to the delight of that same parent and many others. That's not a good stretch of headlines for MAGA in Georgia, and neither is this:New Atlanta Journal Constitution/UGA polling shows President Donald Trump is underwater in Georgia on just about every issue with just about every demographic other than "white men" and "diehard Republican," but before Democrats go thinking things are swinging in their direction, those same findings show they're in worse shape. The good news? They're in no position to do anything and there's (unfortunately) still time for that reality to wash over voters who seem to lack that awareness (still). Current Georgia governor Brian Kemp leads Senator Jon Ossoff in a 2026 head-to-head, in that same poll, though around the margin of error, and even that's not the best news for Republicans in a state they've dominated. Why? He's the only potential Republican even appearing to be competitive vs. Ossoff and another 18 months anywhere similar to the last 100 days will wear on the party brand and anyone attached to it.About Democrats' suffering in polling ... AJC op/ed scribe and political reporter Patricia Murphy noted the precarious situation. Again, voters wanting Democrats to "do something!" seem to forget they left Democrats powerless to do much.

This week on Basic Bogeys, we're joined by our good friend Jordan, founder of The Putter Shop, for a laid-back but meaningful chat about golf, entrepreneurship, and what it means to build something you truly love.Jordan kicks things off by sharing his background—growing up in Georgia, falling in love with golf through the Atlanta Junior Golf scene, and finding his niche in putting. While other sports didn't quite click, the precision and mental focus of putting just fit—and over time, it became his favorite part of the game. After years in higher education (which he's still crushing), Jordan made the leap into golf retail, launching The Putter Shop in late 2023. With his wife's support and a deep love for the game, he built a brand that's all about quality putters, headcovers, and gear that speaks to the soul of golf.We talk about:The inspiration behind The Putter ShopWhy putting holds such a special place in Jordan's gameHis first real putter fittingThe evolution of putters—from classic blades to today's malletsCollaborating with Acorn Hills Golf Co. on some killer polosJordan also reflects on how putting has a unique kind of artistry—where feel, confidence, and style intersect. And while he's still growing the YouTube side, his Instagram is already buzzing, and his used putter selection is clean (no beaters here).Whether you're a golf junkie, gear nerd, or someone dreaming of starting your own golf brand, this episode brings the good vibes and plenty of insight.Big thanks to Jordan for dropping in and sharing his story.https://the-putter-shop.com/Send us a message and let us know what you thought about this episode! From learning crochet as a kid to rediscovering her love for it as an adult, Laverne spills all the yarn (pun intended) about her creative adventures. They dive into the magic of fiber, the power of perseverance, and the beauty of embracing those "oops" moments in crafting. Laverne also shares the scoop on her Saturday Shenanigans show, where she brings together fiber artists for a mix of learning, laughter, and good vibes. True to the spirit of shenanigans, she shows how imperfections are just part of the creative fun. Lisa and Laverne remind us all: crafting is about enjoying the process, mistakes and all. So grab your hooks, needles, or whatever you love, and tune in for a stitchin' good time! =====Where you can find Laverne!Bzypeach.comIG: @bzypeach=====Lisa Woolfork is an associate professor of English specializing in African American literature and culture. Professors Pete, Tony, and Peachy sit down to talk about our recent experience at HarvestFest, Belt Promotions, upcoming events, and more. We even get a riveting geography lesson from Peachy on the vastness of Martlon's borders.
This week, Scott was joined by Natalie Orpett, Anna Bower, and Matt Gluck to talk over some of the week's big national security news, including:“Some Assembly Required.” On Tuesday, President Biden gave his fourth and final speech as president to the U.N. General Assembly. He used the occasion to reflect on the many foreign policy decisions of his presidency, including the withdrawal from Afghanistan, opposition to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and the (thus far unsuccessful) pursuit of a ceasefire in the conflict in Gaza. What does this speech—and the year's U.N. General Assembly more broadly—tell us about the state of his foreign policy legacy?“Keeping it Peachy.” Georgia's state election board is in the news for rules changes that some allege could delay finalization of the 2024 election results, opening a possible door for Congress to manipulate the results. But what will these rules changes really mean? And what does it tell us about the potential for (and limits on) efforts to manipulate the outcome of the 2024 presidential election?“Memo-ries of the Way We Were.” Last week, the New York Times published excerpts from several memoranda prepared by then-President Trump's White House Counsel addressing questions he appears to have posed regarding his ability to direct the Justice Department to investigate and prosecute individuals. Given Trump's repeated pledges of vengeance if he were to return to the White House, what do these memoranda tell us about what he might be able to accomplish? And what obstacles may lie in his way, particularly in light of the Supreme Court's intervening decision on presidential immunity? For object lessons, Natalie recommended Helen Phillips' new novel “Hum.” Anna stole Scott's object lesson and recommended season two of Rings of Power along with season three of Industry. Scott sang the praises of the best tiny speaker he ever did see (er, hear). And Matt Gluck dug into the sportsball file to urge listeners to begin following the Detroit Tigers' historic playoffs run.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. Hosted on Acast.
