Frozen Dreams: How a Family Agricultural Empire Exposed the Dark Side of American Capitalism

Keen On Democracy

Popeye might have gotten strong from eating spinach, but for the family of C.F. Seabrook, New Jersey's narcissistic patriarch of industrialized farming, spinach has been a curse. In his new book The Spinach King: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty, New Yorker staff writer John Seabrook charts the dramatic rise and fall of his family's Seabrook Farms. Part family memoir, part critique of industrialized agricultural capitalism, Seabrook tells the story of his grandfather C.F. Seabrook, the "Henry Ford of agriculture”, who built a frozen vegetable empire on 20,000 acres in New Jersey. Rather than a celebration of American innovation, however, The Spinach King is a parable about the dark side of capitalist ambition, explaining how the pursuit of industrial-scale farming led to worker exploitation, family destruction, and ultimately, the dynasty's collapse. Seabrook's motivation for writing about the rise and fall of his grandfather's empire? “Revenge,” he confesses, against a monster who cheated his own father and then psychologically humiliated his son. Five Key Takeaways 1. Industrial Agriculture's Labor Problem Remains Unsolved C.F. Seabrook discovered that while you can mechanize many aspects of farming, crucial tasks like harvesting and cultivation still require human hands. This 100-year-old challenge persists today—American agriculture still depends heavily on immigrant labor because Americans won't do the difficult, seasonal work.2. Capitalism Without Checks Corrupts Families The Seabrook story illustrates how pure capitalist pursuit can destroy the very thing it's meant to benefit. C.F. Seabrook's obsession with profit and control led him to psychologically abuse his sons, cheat his own father, and ultimately tear apart his family dynasty through paranoia and manipulation.3. Generational Conflict Doomed the Business The company's downfall wasn't primarily due to labor issues or market forces, but from irreconcilable differences between C.F. and his Princeton-educated son. The elder Seabrook's anti-union, authoritarian approach clashed with his son's more progressive values, creating internal warfare that destroyed the business.4. Personal Motivation Drives Powerful Storytelling John Seabrook openly admits he wrote the book for revenge against his grandfather, who had psychologically tormented his father. This personal stake transforms what could have been dry business history into a compelling family reckoning with broader implications for American capitalism.5. Agricultural Scale Has Natural Limits Unlike grain farming, vegetable agriculture may have inherent scaling limitations. Seabrook's grandfather tried to apply Henry Ford's mass production principles to farming, but vegetables—especially those requiring hand-picking—resist the kind of industrial scaling that works for manufacturing or grain production.John Seabrook has been a staff writer at The New Yorker for more than three decades. He is the author of The Song Machine, Flash of Genius, Nobrow and other books. The film “Flash of Genius” was based on one of his stories. He and his family live in Brooklyn.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. This is a public episode. Unraveling The Words of Yahweh
Nahum Chapter 1 Part 2

Unraveling The Words of Yahweh

Na'hum. (consolation). Nahum, called "the Elkoshite," is the seventh, in order, of the Minor Prophets. His personal history is quite unknown. The site of Elkosh, his native place, is disputed, some placing it in Galilee, others in AssyriaThe name refers back to Yahweh's compassion connected with Jonah's mission eighty-seven years before. What is the purpose of this book? The book of Nahum is devoted exclusively to the announcement of the destruction of the city of Nineveh; the prophecy gave hope to the people of Judah who had long been terrorized by Assyria's constant and ominous threatBefore I get into this study, I discuss the negative side of the word ‘whirlwind', which we find in verse 3 is the positive side of Yahweh's WordJuly 20th 1776 we read of a letter written from John Page to Thomas Jefferson. At the end of this letter John Page writes; “P.S. I am highly pleased with your Declaration. God preserve the united States. We know the Race is not to the swift nor the Battle to the strong. Do you not think an Angel rides in the Whirlwind and directs this Storm?” Knowing what I know about Jefferson, John Page could not have been talking about Yahweh! But his pagan godIn his book, American Dynasty, Kevin Phillips confirms this practice of message-coding by Bush, pointing out the ever-present references in the president's speeches to words such as “evil” and “evil ones.” At the top of Phillips' list is reference again to the use of the metaphysical phrase “whirlwind,” which he interprets as “a medium for the voice of God.” From an esoteric point of view, Phillips was either unaware of or unwilling to discuss the deeper, contemporary meaning of this language and its importance to secret societiesInvitation to angels by elected officials combined with passive civilian conformity is key to opening doorways for supernatural agents to engage social governance. This is a classic tenet of demonology. Spirits go where they are invited, whether to possess an individual or to take dominion over a region. One could contend therefore that starting in 2001, the United States became so disposed in following and not challenging unprecedented changes to longstanding U.S. policies including the Christian rules for just war, that a powerful force known to the Illuminati as the “Moriah Conquering Wind,” a.k.a. “the Angel in the Whirlwind” accepted the administration's invitation and enthroned itself in the nation's capitalIn 1992, former M16 British Intelligence Officer, Dr. John Coleman wrote a book about “The Committee of 300” in which he claimed inside knowledge concerning world manipulation by an occult Illuminati elite. According to Coleman, “Moriah Conquering Wind” is one of the modern names the society members go by. He stated:Included in the membership are the old families of the European Black Nobility, the American Eastern Liberal Establishment (in Freemason hierarchy and the Order of Skull and Bone), the Illuminati, or, as it is known by the Committee, “MORIAH CONQUERING WIND”…. In the Committee of 300, which has a 150-year history, we have some of the most brilliant intellects assembled to form a completely totalitarian, absolutely controlled “new” society - only it isn't new, having drawn most of its ideas from the Clubs of Cultus Diabolicus. It strives toward a One World Government rather well described by one of its late members, H. G. Wells, in his work commissioned by the Committee which Wells boldly called: “THE OPEN CONSPIRACY-- PLANS FOR A WORLD REVOLUTION.” The same spiritual battle that took place in the times of Nahum is taken place right now in America. In upcoming programs, I will be looking at the Capital Building and see what it really stands forHave any questions? Feel free to email me; keitner2024@outlook.com

Even though this is Rachel's birthday episode, Sam finds a way to make it about him. Classic little brother move. How did it take us 112 episodes to finally break down one of our most favorite tracks from folklore? All we know is it was worth the wait. The spirit and lore and TWIST of it all for this song made this one of the more fun episodes we've discussed in a while. Of course, we couldn't just dive into the song right away. We had to spill some Taylor Tea.... Sam insists on going into yet another discussion about Reputation (Taylor's Version). Rachel seems to think TS12 is in the works, but Sam isn't so sure Taylor has enough inspiration to release that album yet. What do you all think? Our new shit brings Bon Iver and Billie Marten into the conversation. Sam is still on his month-long cleanse, so he brings a cocktail idea to pair with this song. Rachel, meanwhile, goes FULL IN. We reveal there's going to be a major twist in this song, but you have to wait until we get there to find out what it is (in the rare event you have no idea already). Rachel finds a way to connect Taylor's songwriting to her relationship with Joe Alwyn. Fine, we'll give it to her. Overall, we had a MARVELOUS time ruining everything this episode and we hope you enjoy!!!Check out our "new shit" playlist on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5LOn9LRJ8lnvnCbpl6fKVG?si=68ca3032d3aa470bShare with us your thoughts on today's episode by sending an email to swiftandswigspodcast@gmail.com.Leave us a written review on the Apple Podcasts app!Follow and rate our podcast on Spotify!

J. Randy Taraborrelli , author of The Hiltons: The True Story of an American Dynast. The Hiltons is a sweeping saga of the success-and excess-of an iconic American family. Demanding and enigmatic, patriarch Conrad Hilton's visionary ideas and unyielding will established the model for the modern luxury hotel industry. But outside the boardroom, Conrad struggled with emotional detachment, failed marriages, and conflicted Catholicism. Then there were his children: Playboy Nicky Hilton's tragic alcoholism and marriage to Elizabeth Taylor was the stuff of tabloid legend. Barron Hilton, on the other hand, deftly handled his father's legacy, carrying the Hilton brand triumphantly into the new millennium. Eric, raised apart from his older brothers, accepted his supporting role in the Hilton dynasty with calm and quiet-a stark contrast to the boys' much younger half-sister Francesca, whose battle for recognition led her into courtrooms and conflict. The cast of supporting players includes the inimitable Zsa Zsa Gabor, who was married to Conrad briefly and remained a thorn in his side for decades, and a host of other Hollywood and business luminaries with whom the Hiltons crossed paths and swords over the years. There comes a time in every woman's life when she must...flee from her family's summer estate holding precious heirlooms in trash bags? For this month's Patreon episode, we read Vanderbilt: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty. This short, punchy, and very readable family biography was written by Anderson Cooper (descendent of Vanderbilts) and Katherine Howe (descendent of some of Salem's finest). This book chronicles some of the Vanderbilts' finest moments during their ascent into America's elite, along with some of their more challenging times (see opening anecdote, and/or anything to do with Gloria). We consider what motivated Cooper to write the book, and what we can learn from another collective biography of the rich during a period of great economic inequality.   original air date: December 30, 2021

I'd Rather Be Reading

Today on the show we're talking about the legend that is Barbara Walters. We actually have another journalist I admire, Susan Page, who wrote The Rulebreaker: The Life and Times of Barbara Walters (which just came out on April 23), talking about a journalist I admire, so our cup runneth over with powerhouse female journalists. Barbara lived a long, full life, passing away on December 30, 2022, at 93 years old. In her lifetime, she became one of the most well-known and well-regarded broadcast journalists and television personalities, perhaps most famous for her genius level interviewing ability and for breaking barriers that once prevented women from being equal to men when it came to broadcast journalism. She was an Emmy winner and hosted numerous programs like Today, the ABC Evening News, 20/20, and she created The View, which Susan and I talk about on the show today. She was a working journalist from 1951 until her retirement in 2015 and was very deservedly inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1989; she even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In the early 1960s, Barbara was relegated to reporting on women's interest stories on Today, but her popularity amongst viewers eventually catapulted to her becoming a co-host of the show in 1974, the first woman to hold such a role on an American news program. In 1976, she broke down more barriers when she became the first American female co-anchor of a network evening news program alongside Harry Reasoner on the ABC Evening News—which, um, did not go so well. Don't worry, Susan and I talk about that, too. She became known for her annual Barbara Walters' 10 Most Fascinating People, and during her career interviewed every sitting U.S. president and First Lady from the Nixons to the Obamas; she also interviewed both Donald Trump and Joe Biden, but not when either was president. Her interviews with subjects ranging from Fidel Castro to Monica Lewinsky and so many more gained her recognition as the best interviewer in the business, but who was Barbara Walters the person, not the personality? Well, Susan's book lays it all out. We learn about Barbara's marriages—she was married four times to three men—her daughter, other romantic relationships, and her childhood, especially her relationship with her father and her sister, and how those relationships shaped her into the woman she became. Today on the show to discuss it all is Susan Page, the Washington, D.C. bureau chief for USA Today. This is Susan's third biography of a powerful woman: her first, about Barbara Bush, was released in 2019 and is called The Matriarch: Barbara Bush and the Making of an American Dynasty. She then released a biography about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called Madam Speaker: Nancy Pelosi and the Lessons of Power in 2021, and her third book is The Rulebreaker. Susan has covered seven White House administrations and 11 presidential elections and has interviewed 10 presidents, right up there with Barbara Walters. She also moderated the 2020 vice presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Mike Pence, founded and hosts a video newsmaker series for USA Today called “Capital Download,” and appears frequently as a panelist or an analyst on various news programs, including Meet the Press—and was even president of the White House Correspondents Association at one point. I can't wait for you to hear our conversation.   The Rulebreaker: The Life and Times of Barbara Walters by Susan Page

Here's a description of A True Account: In Boston, as the Golden Age of Piracy comes to a bloody close, Hannah Masury – bound out to service at a waterfront inn since childhood – is ready to take her life into her own hands. When a man is hanged for piracy in the town square and whispers of a treasure in the Caribbean spread, Hannah is forced to flee for her life, disguising herself as a cabin boy in the pitiless crew of the notorious pirate Edward "Ned" Low. To earn the freedom to choose a path for herself, Hannah must hunt down the treasure and change the tides. Meanwhile, professor Marian Beresford pieces Hannah's story together in 1930, seeing her own lack of freedom reflected back at her as she watches Hannah's transformation. At the center of Hannah Masury's account, however, lies a centuries-old mystery that Marian is determined to solve, just as Hannah may have been determined to take it to her grave. A True Account tells the unforgettable story of two women in different worlds, both shattering the rules of their own society and daring to risk everything to go out on their own account. In his book, “Family Reins: The Extraordinary Rise & Epic Fall of an American Dynasty,” author Billy Busch describes the contrast in the Anheuser-Busch when his father ran the company and what it's become today under the Belgium-headquartered Corporation, InBev. Instead of pushing beer as a social drink bringing people together to have fun, under it's new ownership, advertising became a political message. He feels the transgender culture was pushed on the beer drinker who doesn't even understand that culture and doesn't relate to it whatsoever. It was just the wrong message and they're paying for it now. His hometown of St. Louis is also no longer thriving, struggling with high crime after a decision to defund the police. Busch says if you look at what Disney is doing, what Target and InBev have done with their advertising, maybe they're trying to be inclusive but inevitably it becomes divisive to push a woke agenda down people's throats. He doesn't think people relate to this type of advertising. Boys dressing up as girls and girls dressing up as boys is so confusing to little kids. And now you're taking kids into Target or Disney and exposing them to these kinds of radical cultural behaviors doesn't make any sense. That used to be a private issue, nobody cared, but we don't want it pushed in our faces. In his book, Busch writes about the building of his family-run beer business. His great grandfather truly lived the American dream and supported and loved this great country. The family shut down distribution out west during the time of war so the military could move troops and equipment. Kicking off season 3, Hadley takes us to the Winchester Mystery House (aka Llanada Villa)—a sprawling San Jose mansion built by The Winchester Repeating Arms Company heiress Sarah Winchester in the late 1800s. The hosts dig into the many legends surrounding the property and investigate rumors that the home's creepy and bizarre architectural features were an attempt to keep out unwelcome spirits. Along the way, they uncover the true story of Sarah Winchester's life, from her reclusive lifestyle to her love of interior design, to find out what really motivated the never-ending construction of her rambling mansion, and why it was deemed valueless after her death. To learn more about the Spiritualist movement that swept the nation during Sarah's heyday, the hosts chat with Lisa Morton, the author of ‘Calling the Spirits: A History of Seances,' about the history of mediumship, seances, ouija boards and more.  CREDITS Alyssa Fiorentino - Host & Producer Hadley Mendelsohn - Host & Producer Jessy Caron - Producer Jacob Stone - Sound Editor & Mixer To advertise on the show: https://www.advertisecast.com/DarkHouse or email us at sales@advertisecast.com.  RELATED LINKS ‘Captive of the Labyrinth' by Mary Jo Ignoffo: https://amzn.to/3PgyLzZ  1963 KPIX Documentary: Mrs. Winchester's House (VIDEO): bit.ly/3refp6n  “Return of the ‘66” (VIDEO): bit.ly/466hSyB Hargis Ranch in 1876 (PHOTO): bit.ly/3sUeNDq  The Winchester House (1985) by Trish Newfarmer (VIDEO): bit.ly/3sTT3Yi  ‘The Gun That Built an American Dynasty' by Laura Trevelyan: https://amzn.to/45LIx4a  ‘Calling the Spirits: A History of Seances' by Lisa Morton: https://amzn.to/465g09h Learn more about your ad choices. Family Reins: The Extraordinary Rise and Epic Fall of an American Dynasty by Billy Busch https://amzn.to/3YdEH0O The story of the iconic Anheuser-Busch dynasty, written -- for the first time -- by a Busch heir. As an heir to the Anheuser-Busch company and fortune, Billy Busch was raised on the real stories of how his family built one of America's oldest and most iconic brands. Since the company was formed almost 150 years ago, the Busch family, their beer, the famous Clydesdales in their advertising, and even their style of business have become a symbol of the American dream -- that not-so-outdated belief that hard work, grit, and a positive can-do attitude make anything possible. Growing up on the family's ancestral estate as a prince to the King of Beers, Billy lived a life only kids could dream up -- living in an amusement park, traveling by private rail car and yacht, and playing with his pet elephant, Tessie. But as he grew up, he realized that the Busch family legacy was not just wealth and privilege. With no separation between family and business, Billy's father -- more boss than dad -- continued the tradition of preparing the next generation for corporate leadership, with high and exacting standards for his children. For Billy, all of this, combined with a dysfunctional family environment, was all too normal. Family Reins tells the story of a legendary American family, their rise to power, and their fall from grace through poisonous infighting, succession struggles, and a seemingly endless string of tragedies, scandals, and loss.About the Author Billy Busch is the founder of the Busch Family Brewing & Distilling Company and an heir to the Anheuser-Busch multi-billion-dollar fortune. He is the proud father of seven children and stars with his wife in the MTV reality series The Busch Family Brewed. A graduate of St. Louis University, he played professional polo, winning the US Open polo tournament. He and his wife, Christi, a film producer and head of Busch Productions, live on their seven-hundred-acre estate in St. Louis, Missouri.

"This book is very tough." - President Donald TrumpThe Bush Crime Family smashes through the layers of lies and secrecy that have surrounded and protected our country's most successful political dynasty for nearly two centuries. New York Times bestselling author Roger Stone lashes out with a blistering indictment, exposing the true history and monumental hypocrisy of the Bushes. In Stone's usual “go for the jugular” style, this is a no-holds-barred history of the Bush family, comprised of smug, entitled autocrats who both use and hide behind their famous name. They got a long-overdue taste of defeat and public humiliation when Jeb's 2016 presidential bid went down in flames.Besides detailing the vast litany of Jeb's misdeeds — including receiving a $4 million taxpayer bailout when his father was vice president as well as his startlingly-close alignment with supposed “enemy” Hillary Clinton — Stone travels back to Bush patriarchs Samuel and Prescott, right on through to presidents George H. W. and George W. Bush to weave an epic story of privilege, greed, corruption, drug profiteering, assassination, and lies. A new preface to this paperback edition features explosive information, including the family's Machiavellian plan to propel Jeb's son George Prescott Bush forward as the family's next political contender. The Bush Crime Family will have readers asking, “Why aren't these people in prison?”This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement

The Kennedys are remembered the vanguard of wealth, power, and style. But their story begins in 1840s Boston, when a poor Irish refugee couple who were escaping famine created a life together in a city hostile to Irish, immigrants, and Catholics, and launched arguably the most powerful dynasty in America's history. The working class background and Irish ancestry JFK leveraged to connect to blue-collar voters referred to Patrick and Bridget, who arrived as many thousands of others did following the Great Famine—penniless and hungry. Less than a decade after their marriage in Boston, Patrick's sudden death left Bridget to raise their children single-handedly. Her rise from housemaid to shop owner in the face of rampant poverty and discrimination kept her family intact, allowing her only son P.J. to become a successful saloon owner and businessman. P.J. went on to become the first American Kennedy elected to public office—the first of many.To look at this story of survival and reinvention – and the powers and dangers of nepotism if left unchecked – is Neal Thompson, author of the book “The First Kennedys: The Humble Roots of an American Dynasty.” We look at what it took to rise from poverty to prosperity in antebellum America, the rough power politics of Irish Boston, and the seeds of empire planted by Joe Kennedy in Depression-era America.
