Alongside, scholarship on tantra has pointed to its diffuse persistence in the early modern period. But what dynamics beyond courts and elite initiates did these investments in occult science and tantra unleash? Through a focus on the seventeenth-century Mughal court and the Rajput polity of Marwar in the eighteenth century, this article weaves together the history of animals with that of harmful magic by non-courtly actors. It demonstrates the blended histories of tantra, Islamicate occult sciences, and folk magic to argue that attributions of liminality encoded people, animals, and things with occult potential. For some, like the owl, this liminality could invite violence and death and for others, like expert male practitioners, it could generate authority. By the eighteenth century, the deployment of practical magic towards harmful or disruptive ends was a political tool wielded not only by kings and elite adepts for state or lineage formation but also by non-courtly subjects and “low”-caste specialists in local social life. After spending time at the fort, one should definitely make a stop at Jaswant Thada - the royal cenotaph and often referred to as the Taj of Jodhpur. The architecture reflects Rajputana as well as Mughal influence. In the vicinity of the fort is the Rao Jodha Rock garden - that offers some wonderful insights into the ecology of the state as well as some interesting trails. Moving towards the old city, make sure to visit Toorji ka Jhalra, a step well as well as the Sardar Market and the bazaars by Ghanta Ghar! Shopping for handicrafts and textiles in these markets is a very popular activity among visitors and localsAnother popular item to check off is to get lost in the narrow lanes and alleyways of the old city, in its full glory with the blue walls and buildings. Ärligt talat var jag osäker på om det någonsin funnits. Men när jag läste på visade det sig att landet visst hade existerat. Många kungar och drottningar hade man haft. Och en ståtlig borg och ett magnifikt palats stod kvar och påminde om den forna prakten och lockade turister från när och fjärran. Poff, så fanns inte längre landet. Jag ville veta mer om landet som en gång tagit upp skatt, haft en regering, en liten armé och tryckt egna frimärken, så jag knackade på hemma hos maharaja Swaroop Singh, bror till den sista regerande kungen av kungadömet Marwar i den indiska Tharöknen. Kungabrodern tog emot i jaktsalongen i sitt palats full av kunglig glans. Det var en bisarr syn. Där satt han i sin orientaliska kostym i ett rum dekorerat med ett bord gjort av ett elefantöra som balanserade på en snabel, ett pennställ tillverkat av en buffelhov, elefantbetar på väggen förstås, och i ett hörn ett uppstoppat lejon stelnad i en rytande pose. Det kändes verkligen som om jag klivit in en försvunnen värld. Det var lite oklart exakt hur länge landet existerat eftersom afghaner, perser, moguler och britter flera gånger knackat på porten till borgen och krävt att få överhöghet. Men själva hävdade man att man funnits sedan 1212 och ända fram till 1947, då de brittiska kolonialherrarna till slut gav sig av, och Marwar tvingades bli en del av det självständiga Indien. Poff, så fanns inte längre landet. Men tack vare att invånarna fick behålla sitt lokala språk och sin särpräglade identitet känner de sig än idag som både som marwarier och indier. Det ena utesluter inte det andra. Bara de senaste 200 åren har det funnits minst tre gånger så många länder på jorden. Besöket i den del av Indien som en gång utgjorde landet Marwar gjorde att jag började fundera på hur många länder det egentligen finns på jorden? Räknar vi antalet medlemmar i FN blir ju svaret 193 länder. Tar man dessutom med Taiwan och Vatikanstaten, som också är självständiga stater men inte är med i FN, då blir det 195. Och gör vi en lista som också innehåller stater med begränsad självständighet och som inte kontrollerar sitt territorium kan man argumentera för att det finns hela 246 länder. Men det är ett ständigt föränderligt antal. Marwar är ju inte ensamt om att ha upphört att existera. Bara de senaste 200 åren har det funnits minst tre gånger så många länder på jorden. Bjørn Berge heter en dansk arkitekt, resenär och frimärkssamlare som gav sig sjutton på att skaffa sig ett frimärke från vartenda ett av de 1 000 länder som utfärdat ett. Resultatet blev inte bara ett imponerande frimärksalbum, utan också boken Nowwherelands, som är en atlas över försvunna nationer. Flera av de 50 länder han berättar om känner jag igen, som Danska Västindien och Bägge Sicilierna, medan många låter som namn från sagans värld. Som Obock som i slutet av 1800-talet var ett självständigt land på Afrikas horn, och Östra Rumelien, som idag är en del av Bulgarien men runt förra sekelskiftet fick uppleva tre decennier av självstyre. Bjørn Berges rumeliska frimärke innehåller i kosmopolitisk anda såväl arabisk, grekisk och bulgarisk som fransk text och är poststämplat i huvudstaden som hette Filippopolis, en av Europas äldsta metropoler. Så läser jag att stan idag heter Plovdiv och är Bulgariens näst största stad. Och då inser jag att jag helt ovetande besökt även det här före detta landet, eftersom jag ifjol gjorde ett kort stopp i staden i samband med en tågresa till Istanbul. Marken gungar till under mina fötter när jag inser att jag har färdats genom ännu ett ingenstansland. i vår historia göms inga bortglömda små 1800-talskungadömen. Det är som om en parallell värld framträder när jag bläddrar i atlasen över försvunna länder. Labuan, Boyaca, Sedang, Perak, Allenstein, Södra Kasai, Övre Yafa Pratar vi om samma planet? Inget av de här länderna nämndes på skolans geografi- och historielektioner. Jag tänker att jag som svensk nog är extra omedveten om alla dessa kortlivade lilleputtländer runt om i världen, van som jag är med en relativt stabil och enhetlig nationell historia. Visst, Finland och Norge har tillhört Sverige och några av våra sydliga landskap har varit danska, men i vår historia göms inga bortglömda små 1800-talskungadömen. I kontinental-Europa ser det ju annorlunda ut med olika furstendömen som ibland bytt nationell tillhörighet både en och två gånger innan de så småningom uppgick i Tyskland, Italien eller något av länderna i sydöstra Europa som bildades efter första världskriget när de Habsburgska och Osmanska rikena föll samman. Atlasen över försvunna länder får mig att tänka på alltings förgänglighet. Världskartan är inte statisk. Nationella identiteter konstrueras och tynar bort. Vilka av dagens nationer kommer någon gång i framtiden att ha försvunnits och glömts bort? Och vilka regioner kommer då att ha brutit sig ur sina moderländer och förklarat sig självständiga? Skottland, Katalonien och irakiska Kurdistan är ju redan på väg, även om deras frigörelseprocesser nyligen har hindrats. Abchazien, Nagorno-Karabach, Nordcypern, Somaliland, Sydossetien och Transnistrien har kommit lite längre, men inte nått ända fram. fler småländer kanske skulle vara bra för världsfreden. Frågan är förstås om det är önskvärt att de lyckas. Nationerna de bryter sig loss från tycker nästan aldrig det, men var landar man i för slutsats om man har ett mer globalt utilitaristiskt perspektiv? Ryggmärgsreflexen säger att fler länder skulle göra världen till en osäkrare plats, eftersom det betyder fler nationella viljor och därmed fler möjliga konfliktytor. Men eftertanken säger mig att de pågående väpnade konflikterna i världen idag inte utkämpas mellan länder, som tidigare i historien, utan praktiskt taget uteslutande inuti i länderna och ofta handlar om etniska och religiösa grupper som slåss för att bli fria från den regim som de mot sin vilja tvingats underordna sig. Som i Syrien, Irak, Afghanistan, Nigeria och Ukraina. Så fler småländer kanske skulle vara bra för världsfreden. Filosofen och lingvisten Julia Kristeva menar att glorifieringen av den nationella identiteten står i vägen för erkännandet av andra former av identitetsskapande. Vi är så fast i nationalismen att vi ser andra gemenskaper som skrämmande och tycker att det är en självklarhet att det är skillnad på folk innanför och folk utanför gränsen. Så fast att vi tycker att det är snudd på en naturlag att det ska finnas människor som inte har samma rättigheter som vi själva. Man skulle kunna säga att världen är på väg åt två olika håll samtidigt. En som sluter sig och en som öppnar sig. Efter andra världskriget har vi, å andra sidan, för första gången någonsin upplevt en emotionernas globalisering, som den tyske sociologen Ulrich Beck uttryckt det. Vad han syftade på var vår tids protester mot avlägsna krig och engagemang för flyktingar från främmande trakter. Tidigare i historien har vi inte brytt oss lika mycket om händelser långt bort. Det är inget tvivel om saken, enligt den tyske sociologen: den kosmopolitiska tanken har växt sig starkare. Men så har vi britternas Brexit, Trumps protektionism, Erdogans Turkiet och Europas alla högerpopulistiska partier. Man skulle kunna säga att världen är på väg åt två olika håll samtidigt. En som sluter sig och en som öppnar sig. När jag bläddrar i boken om ingenstansländerna får jag en vision som kanske kan accepteras i de politiska läger som idag befinner sig på kollisionskurs med varandra. Låt alla världens regioner få blomstra. Plocka upp de vackra idéerna om från kalla krigets slut i början av 90-talet och EU:s utvidgning i början av 00-talet. De idéer som handlade om en på samma gång mer global och mer regional värld. Låt fler folk få mer lokalt självbestämmande, rätt att tala sitt språk och skriva sin egen historia. Men se samtidigt till att finns internationella gemenskaper, som helst är starkare och effektivare än både FN och EU och därför klarar av att hålla chauvinismen och etnocentrismen stången. Hellre tusen nästan självständiga regioner som tyglas av överstatliga gemenskaper än 195 nationalistiska länder med obegränsat självbestämmande som trycker ner minoriteter, rustar sig till tänderna och ängsligt sneglar på varandra. Det låter kanske som en utopi, men samtidigt tror jag att det är den enda möjlighet som finns för kosmopolitismen att träda ut ur sitt filosofiska luftslott.
