In this episode of the First Day Podcast, host Bill Stanczykiewicz, Ed.D., is joined by Cherian Koshy, CFRE, CAP®, Vice President at Kindsight and co-author of the study Donor Perceptions of AI. The conversation discusses how donors perceive the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the nonprofit sector. This independently funded study surveyed over 1,000 U.S. donors who contributed between $20 and $200,000 over the past year, offering a rare look into their comfort level with AI and its potential impact on fundraising practices. Cherian explains that while many nonprofits remain uncertain about AI's various use cases, donors are surprisingly well-informed, likely due to media coverage. The study revealed five key themes, with privacy and data security concerns (noted by 60% of respondents) among the top issues. However, an even more significant worry for donors was the loss of human connection in philanthropy. Despite these concerns, most respondents were optimistic about AI's potential to enhance a nonprofit's effectiveness and remained open to its responsible use. Interestingly, AI isn't a major factor in most donors' giving decisions—either positively or negatively. Less than 10% said they would be more inclined to donate because of AI, while the majority indicated it wouldn't affect their giving at all. Cherian shares practical applications for AI in improving internal processes, such as using chatbots to answer donor questions instantly. This efficiency can free up significant time for staff, allowing them to focus more on personal donor interactions. Bill highlights an example where AI saved one fundraiser 8–16 hours per week, resulting in several additional donor meetings. The episode wraps up with a focus on transparency and trust-building. Cherian stresses the importance of communicating openly with donors about how AI is being used and involving community members in discussions about technology and ethics. He cites the example of the Furniture Bank of Toronto, which developed a responsible AI manifesto to foster trust with stakeholders. With AI playing an increasingly central role in nonprofit operations, the conversation encourages organizations to balance innovation with authentic relationship-building while continuing to prioritize donor engagement and stewardship.

In this particular message, Joe uses the Restoration of the walls of Jerusalem from the book of Nehemiah, a prophetic picture of what it looks like to build into the future as Father and sons.He uses what he thinks is the mundane details of Nehemiah's building plans in the Old Testament to draw out processes and mile-markers to the restoration project of Christ on the inside of us. He uses it to cast a vision for healing and calls us to not just settle for peace for the short term, like king Hezekiah, but set a pattern for generations to follow.God desires to restore us completely, and there is nothing that He cannot do! He wishes for our inner and outer world to shine like polished gold, like clear glass. This long-term vision gives us purpose to follow Christ even though the journey costs us. God wants to send out fully healed sons to lead others into their own journey as sons and daughters, so that Jesus can get what he prayed for in John 17:11 ‘that they may be one, even as we are one”

Episode 159: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation BasicsFuture Dr. Ameri explains how transcranial magnetic stimulation can be useful in the treatment of certain mental conditions. Written by Omeed Ameri, MS-IV, Western University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific. Editing by Hector Arreaza, MD.You are listening to Rio Bravo qWeek Podcast, your weekly dose of knowledge brought to you by the Rio Bravo Family Medicine Residency Program from Bakersfield, California, a UCLA-affiliated program sponsored by Clinica Sierra Vista, Let Us Be Your Healthcare Home. This podcast was created for educational purposes only. Visit your primary care provider for additional medical advice.Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)TMS is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain to improve symptoms of depression and Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). TMS uses the principles of electromagnetic inductions as described by Faraday's Law. When an electric current passes through the TMS coil, it creates a rapidly charging magnetic field, which passes unimpeded through the scalp and skull, inducing a secondary current in neural tissues of the brain, causing depolarization of neuronal membranes in targeted brain regions, mainly in the superficial layers of the cortex 1.5 to 2.5 cm beneath the coil. How it works.Depending on the frequency and pattern of magnetic pulses, TMS can either increase or decrease cortical excitability. High-frequency TMS (Generally > 1 Hz) is associated with increased cortical excitability and is often used for depression treatment. In contrast, low-frequency TMS (< 1 Hz) is typically used for anxiety and pain. This stimulation alters neurotransmitter release such as dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. The repeated stimulation over sessions promotes synaptic plasticity, leading to more lasting changes in brain activity patterns associated with improved clinical outcomes. This is thought to have cascading effects throughout brain networks, and modulate dysfunctional circuits implicated in depression and restoring normal function. Effectiveness. The effectiveness of TMS can vary widely between individuals due to differences in anatomy, age, and specific conditions being treated. As such, ongoing research into how to personalize and optimize TMS parameters is ongoing. Research supporting the use of TMS in treatment-resistant depression.Research into the effectiveness of TMS and other therapy modalities targeting Treatment-Resistant Depression has been an ongoing effort for many years. In 2009, the American Academy of Family Physicians published Dr. Little's article titled “Treatment-Resistant Depression,” which noted that there was little evidence that TMS could significantly treat patients with treatment-resistant depression. Since that time, the American Journal of Psychiatry published a groundbreaking study in 2020, led by Dr. Cole, which explores the effectiveness of a novel treatment for treatment-resistant depression. This trial, known as Stanford Accelerated Intelligent Neuromodulation Therapy or SAINT, which demonstrates promising results in combating depression where traditional methods have failed. It was an open-label study that provides a new perspective on depression treatment, emphasizing rapid and targeted intervention. Twenty-two participants received 50 intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS), which is a more recent protocol for TMS treatment, over the course of five days. Each session included 1,800 pulses per session, with a 50-minute intersession interval, ten times a day. As a result of this intensive regimen, one participant withdrew from treatment, and 19 of the remaining 21 met remission criteria, with a score of less than 11 on the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale. There were no serious adverse events reported, the participant who withdrew did so due to anxiety. Side effects included fatigue and some discomfort. 70% of participants continued to meet response criteria one-month post-treatment.TMS application for patients with OCD. Studies have shown promising results for the treatment of OCD with TMS. Typically, OCD is difficult to manage and requires the highest doses of SSRIs. In 2019, The American Journal of Psychiatry published Dr. Carmi's Article titled: “Efficacy and Safety of Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Prospective Multicenter Randomized Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Trial”, which presents a comprehensive study on the effectiveness of dTMS in treating OCD. This multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involved 99 OCD patients across 11 centers, who were treated with either high-frequency dTMS or sham dTMS, and focused on changes in the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (YBOCS) scores. The treatment phase extended to 6 weeks with a total of 29 treatment sessions, following a 3-week screening phase and a 4-week follow-up phase. Patients were aged 22-68, with YBOCS scores greater than or equal to 20. At the start of the study, patients were already on a maintenance treatment with therapeutic dosages of SSRIs, or previously failed an SSRI and were currently being treated with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. The results revealed that dTMS treatment participants showed a significantly greater reduction in YBOCS score compared to sham treatment (6.0 points vs. 3.3 points). The most frequent adverse effect was headaches. There was one incident of severe suicide ideation. On investigation, it was revealed that the suicide ideation preceded the treatment and required hospitalization for the patient. TMS therapy has shown promising results in treating both treatment-resistant depression and OCD. More research is required to assess the long-term viability of the treatment modality, and which treatment regimens have the greatest efficacy for various psychiatric disorders. I hope our listeners will keep TMS in mind when confronted with treatment-resistant depression and OCD.___________________Conclusion: Now we conclude episode number 159, “Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation,” also known as TMS. We learned from future Dr. Ameri that TMS has proven to be an effective option for treatment-resistant depression and Obsessive-compulsive disorder. When medications and therapy are not enough, you may consider this therapy for your patients. This week we thank Hector Arreaza and Omeed Ameri. Head of marketing for T-Ads, the advertising solutions division of T-Mobile, Cherian Thomas describes the evolution of his rideshare entertainment platform, Octopus, to creating brand love across all digital out of home screens. In this upbeat but informative conversation with the high-energy "Doctor Thomas," Insider Interviews host E.B. Moss also gets the download on DOOH from DPAA CEO, Barry Frey, to offer listeners and viewers a complete picture of the state of screens today. QUOTES AND TIMESTAMPS 00:02:23 - "By the digitization of out-of-home, we mean a modern-day digital advertising business." 00:03:10 - "DOOH is becoming very powerful especially with its ability to target audiences, that heretofore was not available." 00:04:20 - " I've seen these crazy billboards where it almost looks like things are flying off of the screen. It's really amazing what can happen now with digital billboards." 00:11:49 - "While trying to market our app to consumers, we had to identify who is the ideal target audience. And then you look and you're like, wow, that's the Uber and Lyft rider!" 00:13:56 - "If we can delight riders in their Uber and Lyft journey, well, what's the next phase?" "The numbers don't lie: actual consumer spending is four times larger in store than it is online." 00:16:56 - "The numbers don't lie: actual consumer spending is four times larger in store than it is online." 00:18:52 - "Well, it turns out advertisers and brands also have similar pain points when it comes to them spending dollars and getting their brand out there or hitting performance metrics." Watch the full episode with Cherian Thomas, Head of Marketing for T-Ad on YouTube, too! [00:23:42] Enthusiasm, energy and skateboarding to work. 00:24:14 - "It starts from the top. So everything we do in my world is always ‘How is that good for our customers?' And I think that's something really important." T-Mobile Chief Creative Officer, Peter DeLuca with DPAA CEO, Barry Frey at Cannes 00:25:59 - "I think Peter DeLuca is a legend. And if you think about T-Mobile's brand, this is the best our brand has ever been. And you don't get there overnight. You have to be consistent. You have to be honest. You have to deliver. Like we say, dream big and deliver." 00:28:24 - "We leverage our brand to get our customers amazing deals and delight them." 00:33:45 - "My favorite product is the T-Mobile SyncUp Kids Watch, which is kind of a smart watch, but all you can do on it are basic things. As a parent, that was a pain point that T-Mobile had solved...This is kind of in our ethos: solving pain points I think is a common theme that's carried forward in everything that we do." 00:35:08 - Brand purpose and trust. "One of our promises is “Nada, yada, yada.” Like, that's our actual Metro by T-Mobile brand campaign right now, because everyone else makes a bunch of promises and the fine print is like “yada, yada, yada, yada.” If that doesn't say we don't have any BS here and you can trust us....” 00:37:41 - "If you have a low cost of screen and you have connectivity, why can't there be a screen at the top of the Vail ski resort to show you information and speed times and fastest slope, the slope is closed, etc. So these are things I'm really excited about. [00:38:30] The growth of Digital Out-of-Home. 00:38:39 - As an industry, I'm excited because the TAM -- the Total Addressable Market -- for Digital Out-of-Home, is much larger. And that's always been the challenge with Digital Out-of-Home. ...You've got a $10 billion industry, but it's getting bigger and bigger as these macro trends continue." 00:40:11 - "What does the E.B. stand for?!” Don't miss the 10/10/23 DPAA Global Summit in New York City's Chelsea Piers, with speakers from McDonalds, Mastercard, Pepsi and more! In her formidable and fiercely well-argued new book Merchants of Virtue: Hindus, Muslims, and Untouchables in Eighteenth-Century South Asia (U California Press, 2022), Divya Cherian shows with meticulous detail and in lyrical prose, the processes and practices that contributed to the emergence and hardening of an exclusivist Hindu identity set in opposition to a notion of Untouchability that also subsumed Muslims. Set in eighteenth century Marwar in the Rathor Kingdom, this book sketches an intimate portrait of the micro-politics and the everyday life of the aspirations, fissures, and resistances that went into the stipulation of caste distinctions in early modern South Asia. At the heart of this book is a narrative equally fascinating and frictious of how a state driven campaign to cultivate “virtuous” Hindu merchants or Mahajans contributed to the demarcation of epistemological, legal, and spatial boundaries between upper caste Hindus and untouchables, including Muslims.Merchants of Virtue combines the best forms of social, legal, political, and conceptual history, and its invasive examination of the interface between religion, state, and society will be of much interest to scholars of religion, South Asia, and Islam. Available also as an Indian edition, this book will also make for an excellent text to teach in both undergraduate and graduate seminars. SherAli Tareen is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Franklin and Marshall College. His research focuses on Muslim intellectual traditions and debates in early modern and modern South Asia. His book Defending Muhammad in Modernity (University of Notre Dame Press, 2020) received the American Institute of Pakistan Studies 2020 Book Prize and was selected as a finalist for the 2021 American Academy of Religion Book Award. Today I talked to Divya Cherian about her article "The Owl and the Occult: Popular Politics and Social Liminality in Early Modern South Asia" published in Comparative Studies in Society and History (June, 2023). Historians of Islamic occult science and post-Mongol Persianate kingship in the Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal Empires have in recent years made clear just how central this body of knowledge was to the exercise of imperial power. Alongside, scholarship on tantra has pointed to its diffuse persistence in the early modern period. But what dynamics beyond courts and elite initiates did these investments in occult science and tantra unleash? Through a focus on the seventeenth-century Mughal court and the Rajput polity of Marwar in the eighteenth century, this article weaves together the history of animals with that of harmful magic by non-courtly actors. It demonstrates the blended histories of tantra, Islamicate occult sciences, and folk magic to argue that attributions of liminality encoded people, animals, and things with occult potential. For some, like the owl, this liminality could invite violence and death and for others, like expert male practitioners, it could generate authority. By the eighteenth century, the deployment of practical magic towards harmful or disruptive ends was a political tool wielded not only by kings and elite adepts for state or lineage formation but also by non-courtly subjects and “low”-caste specialists in local social life. States and sovereigns responded to the popular use of harmful magic harshly, aiming to cut off non-courtly access to this resource. If the early modern age was one of new ideologies of universal empire, the deployment of occult power outside the court was inconsistent with the ambitions of the kings of this time.
