Are you living your life with the purpose you always hoped for? Today, is part 2 of our episode with Melissa Sharpe where we talk about pivoting in your 40s. She shares with us why she decided to go back to school to become a counselor in her 40s. We chat about why it can be easy for women to feel like they are to old to try something different but how they should still go after their dreams even if it feels scary. We discuss the logistics of having a busy schedule with the kids and still making ourselves a priority to live out our purpose. One topic that stood out to me is the conversations she had with her family about making this decision. Hear what we have to say about this topic and more on the podcast. Do you feel stuck, do you want to leave counting calories and dieting behind? Do you feel you like you can achieve so much in life but your weight loss? https://kensthinktank.com/chips-are-vegetables-s03e01/Melissa Sharpe on Ken's Think Tank Season 3, Episode 1I used to sit next to Melissa Sharpe during Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs Commission meetings. She is always so much fun to talk to. So positive. So dedicated. So classy. So involved. And so pretty!Just before one of those meetings began, Melissa came rushing in. As the meeting was about to start, she explained to me that she had been rushing from one thing to the next all day . . . and she didn't have time to eat . . . and she was starving. She stopped in at her house and only had about 2 minutes, so she was leaning over the counter just shoveling Fritos into her mouth before rushing out the door to make it to the commission meeting that evening. It cracked me up because Melissa is the embodiment of elegance . . . and the image her story painted in my head was so contradictory of my image of her that it stuck with me. My girlfriend and I occasionally find ourselves in a bind with time, and we've been known to throw some fries on a sheet pan, open a can of chili, dump it over the fries, toss it in the oven for a minute, and eat them right off the pan. When we do, we say we're “going Melissa Sharpe on them.” Ha Ha!It was good to discover that Melissa is just as human as the rest of us – even though I still hold her on a pedestal. She explains in this clip that she and her husband, George, call Fritos and potato chips vegetables . . . because they're corn and potatoes. Brilliant!Support the show (http://kensthinktank.com/)
Have you been struggling with maintaining your friendships during the pandemic? Today we have Jennifer Thompson back on the show to share with us how life has been during the pandemic regarding friendships. As we were talking about this topic she shared with us that before COVID-19 her she always enjoyed her friends from out of state coming to visit at her house a few times a month and that it has been hard to no longer connect in that way. Also that she has noticed that she isn't reaching out to friends as often because she has been home with the kids helping them with school as most of you can relate too! She is finding it has been hard to not be connected as she used to be to those friends! Jennifer did mention that a few positive things have come from all of this and one of those things is that she has learned to slow down and not rush from here to there and not only has she really enjoyed it but so has her youngest child. Also, she has learned to create more space to be more present and to not feel guilty over it. One topic that Jennifer mentioned when it comes to friends that she tries really hard to not put a lot of expectations on others and to give them grace. That her friends have shown her grace over the years and she wants to be able to give that to others as well. Hear what she says about this topic and more on the podcast. Has it been hard for you to build community during lockdown? Today we have Lindsay Young back on the show today to talk about building a community during a pandemic. Lindsay shares with us what it's like to move and cultivating a community before lockdown and how she would of done somethings differently if she had known what was coming. We talked about how if she would of known that 9 months after moving that there would of been a pandemic that she would of focused less on work and more on building friendships and creating a community for when times were tough. Lindsay shared with us that when reaching out to friends it's really good to ask specific questions, vs. just saying "how are you?", to ask "how can I pray for you?" that way it let's your friends know that you really care about their answer and that you are special to them. In the past Lindsay and I always talk about self care and so we touched on this topic again because it's super easy to put yourself at the top of the list when you are feeling lonely and sad. That to take care of yourself is super important and to create routines around the basics so that you are starting off the day the best way possible. She likes to say it takes the negotiation out of it. One topic that stood out to me when Lindsay was sharing that it's always good to check on your strong friend, that many people feel like those friends are doing fine but they still need to know that you care. Hear what she says about this topic and more on the podcast. If you enjoyed this episode make sure to check the first episode of this series on Mental Health with Melissa Sharpe. Have you been having a hard time working through grief? Today we have Heidi McLaughlin, an author, speaker and someone who has been widowed twice. Heidi shares with us how this past year has looked like for her and how she learned that she really needed human connection and what she did to connect with others since she lives on her own. One of the reasons I wanted to have her on is because she wrote a book called Fresh Joy and I just love her attitude on life. So even if you haven't lost someone this past year, maybe you are grieving the life you had prior to COVID, maybe life changed drastically for you in a way you didn't want and dealing with that grief. Heidi talks about how she worked through her grief and how it was hard and painful but she knew she wanted to be joyful again. She also realized that she needed not only grief counseling but needed to go to trauma counseling and how that made such a huge difference in her life. Lastly, she mentioned that she learned she had to ask for help, and not to wait for people to connect with her that if she wanted to feel connected she took it upon herself to reach out. One topic that stood out to me is when she told us that peace is the foundation of finding joy. Hear what she says about this topic and more on the podcast. Have you been struggling with feeling lonely during the pandemic? I wanted to have Melissa Sharpe back on the show to kick off this 4 part series where we are talking about loneliness. We thought the topic of mental health would be important to address since that is impacting many people right now with being isolated. Melissa shares with us how her experience during the past year and what she has learned about herself and her family. We also touch on how it feels harder when its colder out and the skies are gray and we are all stuck inside. I love that she is transparent with us and tells us what she does to help her mental state during the hard times. One story that stood out to me is when she told us that "it's ok to feel this sadness, but what will I do to help it?". Hear what she says about this topic and more on the podcast. Has this quarantine actually been a blessing in disguise for your family ? Today, we have Laura Smith back on the show! If you missed her last episode you can check her out on episode 172. I wanted to have her back to share with us what it looks like to have older kids during quarantine. We talk about that we are weathering the same storm but our experiences look different. She shares with us that the hardest part as a mom is dealing with her kids disappointments like missing prom, possibly graduation and having to come home from college abruptly and how she can't fix it. Laura does acknowledge that there have been a lot of blessings during this time frame too. One of the stories that really stood out to me is when she explained that there is such a renewed sense of family and that they are able to take a giant exhale. During this time she has realized that they were all over extended and she hopes after this that they won't fall victim to do all the things they did before. Hear what she says about this topic and more on the podcast. Please share with your friends, my goal is to get these episodes into as many moms's ears as possible! Are you feeling a bit stressed or worried with money right now? Today, we have Rachel Cruze back on the show! I had her on the show before on episode 100 where we talk about loving your life not theirs and it was so great. Make sure to check that out after this episode! So, I wanted to have her back on during this time frame because I know people have lost their jobs, or have had to take a pay cut, or just concerned that they may lose their job. So she shares with us what to do if you have lost your job. She doesn't want you to blow through your emergency fund, she wants you to find another source of income if you can and go on unemployment to help not eat up your savings. I asked her what should people do if they are paying down credit card debt but lost their job. She also shared with us, that if you don't have 3-6 months emergency fund and currently are investing into your retirement that you need to pause that. She also wants everyone to leave their retirement alone, don't touch it, it's there for the long haul and we need to ride it out! One topic that stood out to me is when Rachel shared with us what we need to do with our stimulus check. Hear what she says about this topic and more on the podcast. Hi you guys we are back for part 3 of the 3 part series of Leave No Girl Behind with Melissa Sharpe. Today we are chatting about talking with our kids vs. talking at them. How its so important to have a conversation with them, and ask them open ended questions. Also, to ask them how they are feeling vs assuming you know. As we close this series we also encourage you to find their tribe so that it can feed their soul. To surround our daughters with the right kind of girls and also be the example that we want for our girls to model after. How do our girls see us with our friends, how do they see us behave or resolve conflict. This plays such a huge role with how our daughters will for them friendships and maintain them. I hope this series has left you inspired to help your daughters navigate friendships and what to do when the drama arises. As we chatted in the previous series about Cultivating Your Village as women and moms, we want to be able to help our daughters learn how to cultivate a village from a young age. So if you feel like you have been swimming upstream with your daughter with friend drama, or you may be wondering like me how will this look like in a few years for my own girls? So make sure to listen to the whole series and share with your friends that have daughters. Let's go to the show! Welcome back to Cultivating Your Village, today is part and we will be discussing on this episode "how does our village build the body of Christ?" How does our village impact our family, and our little corner of our world". How does it all work together to unify us? With that, I want to encourage all of you to reach out and get a dinner going with your neighbors, or co-workers, or mom's that you see at preschool or school and invite them to a dinner even if you want to go out to dinner vs having them over. Take that risk, be brave, and we would love to hear about it! If you decide to do this, please message me, you can email me here. Also, I am not just talking to my fellow Americans! I just want to do a shout out to Japan, you guys have bypassed Canada with downloads! I have talked to a friend of mine and she is a military wife and she said that there is a big base in Japan so if you are listening and you are in Japan, please leave me a message I would love to hear from you! Anyway, no matter where you are, I want to encourage you guys to open your doors, invite people in, and take that risk. Get to know women around you, don't just "like" their FB post or Instagram posts. Really get to know them, that is my challenge for you and I really want to hear back from you guys. Also, if you haven't already joined the Mom Inspired Show email list make sure you do that at Mominspiredshow.com, so that way you will know when our new series will be launching called "No Girl Left Behind". This will most likely be a shorter series starting in the Fall and its focus is on helping our daughters navigate life by parenting them from the strong woman we desire to be and not the wounded girl we may have been. So if you have a daughter, make sure to tune in! Let's go to the show! Welcome back to Cultivating Your Village, today is part 5 and we will be discussing on this episode what is it that motivates us in our desire to feel connected to those around us? Do you guys ever feel lonely, esp. when you have been on media of some sort for too long? Are you guys finding yourself exhausted? Could it be that you are spending to much time online and its leaving you lonely and exhausted? We are tired, because we are consuming so much that we can't handle it or process it. We get sucked into social media thinking it will only be 15 minutes and then 2 hours later we find ourselves frustrated that we just spent all that time online. Are you finding its too easy to get sucked into the online world and its leaving you exhausted because you are not having enough time to do what you really want to do or need too? We hope this inspires you to step away from your devices and spend more time with friends and family offline! Let's go to the show! Welcome back to Cultivating Your Village, today is part 4 and we will be discussing on this episode: "When are we establishing our boundaries?" How do you figure out what your boundaries are, are you being close enough with your village but also knowing what your boundaries are? When you establish your own boundaries people in your inner core will respect you for that, and if they don't then you might want to reconsider your village because you will always disappoint them if you don't set boundaries. We have to be very conscious about our decisions we make. Let's go to the show! Welcome back to Cultivating Your Village, today is part 3 and we will be discussing on this episode where we schedule our time. We need to remember that we need to give time to our family since they are our first village and sometimes our marriage and kids can be put on the back burner even if we are doing what we think is best for them. What I mean by that is we can be running around town taking the kids to sports and activities but are we really being intentional with them? As great as it is to provide opportunities for our children are we taking the time to get to know them and shape them? Are we spending time with our our spouse and nurturing that relationship or are you finding that you are like two ships passing in the night? Our families are the closet village that we should have and that means taking inventory in how much time you are giving them and making sure its intentional. This is also why its so important to pick your village wisely because it won't just be your village but it will also be your husband's village and your kid's village and we really want to have amazing influences in our village. It's so important that we choose people that can all lift one another up and set great example for our kids to see how relationships should look like so that it sets them up later in life to create their own village. We hope this episode leaves you inspired to really take stock into who your friends are, how they influence your family and do they pull you up or do they pull you down? Let's go to the show! Hey you guys I hope you really enjoyed last week's episode part 1 of Cultivating Your Village. If you did miss it, then make sure to go back to episode 36 to check out part 1. Moving onto today's episode we talk about our expectations and how unmet expectations can kill a relationship. I don't know about you but I definitely have seen this happen where someone is thinking one way and another person is thinking another way and it's not matching up and they both really care for one another but the relationship ends. I think all too often it's easy to think someone thinks like you and if they do something that you wouldn't do then you internalize that they don't like you. You have to realize that we all grew up in different families and we have different ways of showing love and you just have to figure out from the beginning what the expectations are for that relationship so that you're on the same page. Hey guys I'm super excited for this episode with Melissa Sharpe she's a writer and speaker and she dives into her childhood and how she was a fatherless daughter... and how that shaped her to be the woman that she is today. She's super witty and funny and she loves being real and authentic on her Instagram posts... and really values being transparent. We talk about her motto that she has in her household with her two girls: "Leave no girl behind" (and what that looks like)... and as moms the importance of teaching her daughters how to treat other girls. Be ready to be moved... and laugh along the way. Let's go to the show! Guest Contact Info: Melissa Sharpe
