Ever felt like someone had read your diary because they understood you so well? That's the Enneagram for you—equally enlightening and a tad eerie! In this episode, we're joined by Beth McCord, who is the founder of Your Enneagram Coach, an Enneagram speaker, coach and teacher for over 20 years. Beth breaks down the basics of the Enneagram, explaining that each of the nine points represents a distinct personality type, each with its own lens (or pair of colored sunglasses, if you will) through which they view the world. These types are defined not only by their actions but more importantly, by their core motivations—fear, desire, weakness, and longing. The conversation takes a practical turn as Beth applies Enneagram wisdom to parenting, drawing from her book "Enneagram for Moms." She emphasizes the importance of parents using the Enneagram to work on themselves first, to better understand and guide their children.  This episode was packed with enlightening bits and real talk, making the Enneagram a tool not just for self-discovery but for fostering deeper empathy and understanding between people. Hey friends! Welcome to Girls' Night! I'm so excited about today's episode. Today we're talking about how to better understand yourself and your kids using the Enneagram.  Since the Enneagram has gained popularity in the past few years, I'm guessing most of you are at least somewhat familiar, but, if you need a refresher, The Enneagram Test is basically a personality assessment to help us know ourselves better and to help us overcome some of the roadblocks in our lives and become the best versions of ourselves. I personally love using the Enneagram because it has helped me understand my heart and my mind and my personality SO MUCH BETTER. But, something I haven't spent as much time on is learning how I can use Enneagram as a tool to better understand my kids and learn how they feel and process things. And that's why I cannot wait to share today's conversation! Our guest for today's episode is my friend, Beth McCord. Beth is an accomplished Enneagram speaker, author, coach, and teacher with over two decades of dedicated experience. Her passion lies in helping individuals rewrite their life stories, empowering them to realize that lasting change and meaningful relationships are possible. Beth's mission led to the creation of the Your Enneagram Coach community—a nurturing space where individuals safely explore the Enneagram. Her most recent book is called, The Enneagram for Moms: See the True Colors of Yourself and Your Children as God Intends, and I cannot wait for you to hear more about it!  I absolutely loved this conversation and I know you're going to love it too! Summary In this episode, host Kelsey Taylor interviews Beth McCord, co-founder of Your Enneagram Coach, about her career journey as an Enneagram nine and how the Enneagram has influenced her work and parenting. Beth shares insights into the challenges and joys of being a type nine mom, including the struggle to know and communicate her own needs, the importance of understanding and accepting her children's different motivations, and the need to balance guiding her children with allowing them to be their authentic selves. Beth and Kelsey discuss how the Enneagram can be used to understand and improve parenting, and they explore how each Enneagram type approaches parenting and the hopes and dreams they have for their children. They also discuss the concept of emotional sobriety and how parents can achieve it. Beth emphasizes the importance of being curious and open to their individual personalities. She shares personal anecdotes and practical tips for using the Enneagram to enhance parent-child relationships. Takeaways Understanding and accepting your own Enneagram type can help you navigate the challenges and joys of being a parent. As a parent, it's important to recognize and respect your children's different motivations and personalities. Avoid trying to make your children mini-versions of yourself; instead, guide them to be the best version of themselves. Parenting can be a journey of self-discovery and personal growth, as you learn to navigate your own fears, desires, and expectations. Parents should be curious about their children's personalities and avoid typing them at a young age. Using the Enneagram can enhance parent-child relationships and promote understanding and compassion. AWARE: Awareness, Welcoming, Asking, Receiving, and Engaging are key steps to achieving emotional sobriety. Being flexible is one of the biggest things.”  (9:06 audio) “What can we do with the time we have and maximize it? That is the key here.”  (12:57  audio) “God created her to be her personality for her kids and their personalities. He didn't make a mistake, so how can we celebrate that, and how can we own our weaknesses but not in a shameful, guilty, judging way? How can we see those and grow from them?”  (24:45 audio) “With courses, how can you say the same content and message as quickly, efficiently, practical, and applicable as possible? I would aim for bite-sized lessons.”  ( (26:54 audio) Coaching this week: (29:47 audio) Escaping the Mediocrity Trap: A Guide to Getting Unstuck In this week's coaching, I share tips for recognizing mediocrity situations and practical steps to escape the mediocrity trip. The mediocrity trap is one of the trickiest ruts to escape. I mentioned it last month, but as a little reminder, Heather MacFadyen of the Don't Mom Alone podcast and I have a super fun show we do together called Sidetracked. As a part of this little venture, this summer we've decided to surprise each other with a guest and then release the episode on both of our shows. It's been super fun so far, and we'd love to know how you're liking it and if you want more of these shows!    On today's Sidetracked episode, Heather surprises me with author, speaker, teacher, podcaster, and enneagram expert . . . Beth McCord. We love Beth because she approaches the enneagram from a biblical perspective and helps us learn how to better navigate our personalities and figure out what makes us tick.    I think you'll especially love the real-life example at the beginning of our conversation about Heather firing off a frustrated email to Beth, and how their enneagram knowledge facilitated healthy conflict resolution. We also discuss how the enneagram intersects with our parenting, and the reasons not to “guess” your kids' number and instead have your older kids take the test themselves. (Which I'm so going to have my older kids do sometime this summer!)    Can't wait for you to hear today's show! Leave a review and share it with a friend pretty please.   All things Cynthia Yanof Connect with Beth McCord:  Website:  Your Enneagram Coach | Free Enneagram Test, Courses, and Coaching Facebook: Your Enneagram Coach Instagram: Beth McCord | (@yourenneagramcoach)

Today's podcast kicks off with a real-life example of how the enneagram can improve relationships and facilitate healthy conflict resolution. Heather sent our guest, Beth McCord, a less than friendly email recently and Beth responded with grace and understanding because she knows how to navigate our personalities, what a gift.  Our guest Beth is a well-known speaker, author, teacher, enneagram coach, podcaster, and more. She has honed her skill of understanding personalities while helping people find freedom in Christ.  We ask her the big question of how to approach the enneagram from a Biblical perspective when there are so many rumors swirling around that its roots are ungodly. At the end of the day, this is a tool to bring freedom to relationships and Beth reminds us the goal is to be a non-anxious connected presence to our kids. Her new book is about motherhood and how we approach our children and conflict based on our personalities and how to heal in unhealthy areas so we can be whole. Stick around to the end where she nails our enneagram types when it comes to mom life, work, and friendship.  Connect with Beth McCord:  Website:  Your Enneagram Coach | Free Enneagram Test, Courses, and Coaching Facebook: Your Enneagram Coach Instagram:  Beth McCord | (@yourenneagramcoach) Links Mentioned:   Eight Sleep | The Intelligent Sleep System Should Christians Use the Enneagram I Origins of the Enneagram Gospel For Enneagram | Tyler Zach More Than Your Number: Beth McCord The Enneagram for Moms: Beth McCord Becoming Us: Beth McCord 9 Enneagram Type Core Motivations Enneagram Assessment - Your Enneagram Coach The Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery: Ian Cron Beth's Sidetracked Show : Dark Matter  Beth's Sidetracked Amazon Purchase: Inflatable Baby Seat for Babies 3 Months and Up, Baby Floor Seats for Sitting Up  Related Episodes: The Enneagram, Marriage and the Gospel :: Beth McCord [Ep 259] Enneagram and Stress :: Ian Cron Recap [Bonus Episode] The Enneagram and Motherhood :: Suzanne Stabile [Ep 232] Featured Sponsors:  Honeylove: Treat yourself to the best bras on the market and save 20% Off at honeylove.com/DMA .
