On July 29th 1984, Jennifer Thompson was raped at knifepoint by a man who broke into her apartment while she slept. A day later, Ronald Cotton was arrested wearing gloves and a blue shirt with white stripes on the sleeves, an identical outfit to Thompson's attacker. He was sentenced to life in prison. After identifying Cotton in a physical lineup, Thompson trusted law enforcement had caught the perpetrator. 11 years later, however, that trust was broken. In Thompson's own words, the public scrutiny and guilt that ensued after Cotton's release “far outweighed” what had been done to her in 1984.  https://www.amandaknox.com Bluesky: @amandaknox.com | @wisecracker.bsky.social IG: @amamaknox | @emceecarbon Learn more about your ad choices. Elizabeth's Book, The Sentimental State #2 of 4. We're talking about abortion and Ireland today. It's hard for a lot of reasons. People shouldn't have to fight so hard to make decisions for their own bodies. An unborn fetus should not have the same legal status as an adult woman. But we're honoring Elizabeth's book, The Sentimental State: How Women-Led Reform Built the American Welfare State, with this series about women, activism, and reform. Elizabeth tells the history of American women, Black and white, who took the anxieties and ideals of the Progressive era and mobilized them to exact political change. Reading Elizabeth's book reveals a lot about the welfare state today, but also, I think, is a kind of roadmap for collective action. For Irish women, and all people with uteruses, unwanted pregnancies left one with few choices until it was finally decriminalized in 2018. Two-thousand-and-eighteen. Barely six years ago. Today we're looking at 100 years of Irish history, inclusive of both the north and south. And most of that history, and most of this episode, is painful. But from that pain came people, mostly women, taking care of each other and fighting for change. And from that collective action came reform. Today, women in both Northern Ireland and the Republic can legally obtain an abortion up to twelve weeks in their own country. Is it perfect? No, of course not. As Elizabeth's book reminds us, reform never is. But it's leaps and bounds better than it was. For our listeners in Texas, South Dakota, Oklahoma, and 18 other US states, this episode will hit too close to home. But I hope it's also a reminder that collective action works. We can have something, and lose it, and then get it back. We just need to fight for each other. So chin up. We can do this together. What makes for a great leader? Your mindset certainly plays a big part. Jennifer Thompson, CEO of webspark media, agrees with this and tries to work on hers regularly. Most recently she's been growing her mental toughness through the trending movement known as 75 HARD. Having completed the initial 75 days, Jennifer is now almost done with phase 1 as well. She says many people get 75 HARD confused with a weight loss program, and while that is often a side effect, the main intention is mental toughness. It will fully test your time management and commitment to yourself. Jennifer says the first month took all of her time and effort, leaving little left. She warns that the program is definitely not for the faint of heart.   One benefit of mental toughness is that you can stop yourself from being triggered by things you don't like about yourself or other people. You know you are capable of tough things, whether it be in dealing with someone, or in changing yourself or your environment. It's been said that every person is the sum of the people they surround themselves with. Jennifer agrees that what you feed your mind matters. What you choose to surround yourself with can either propel you into success or keep you from it. Jennifer is a firm believer that when your cup is full you have a lot more to give. She chooses to give back through donating a portion of proceeds to animal rescue, rescuing dogs herself, and soon starting a scholarship fund to help women start small businesses.   As a women business owner herself, Jennifer knows what it takes to make a lasting impression. In fact, most of Jennifer's clients stay with her for the long haul. It's her breadth of knowledge and experience that makes her a true asset to anyone she works with. When it comes to marketing, being able to hit on all fronts can truly make all the difference.   What You'll Learn: Why 90% of people fail 75 HARD in the first week. How to keep your joy and peace. What it means to fill your own cup first and why you should. And much more!   Favorite Quote: “I don't like that about myself, so I'm going to work on it. I'm gonna look at it,  I'm gonna pull it out, examine it, do something about it, and then put it back away.” -Jennifer Thompson   How to Get Connected: Webspark Media Email Jennifer _____________________________________________________________ Find Nikki on her Website here, or Email her at nikki@prissynikki.com You can also find her on Facebook, Instagram, & LinkedIn.  The Life Amplified Podcast is not your rainbows and butterflies show. But one thing that all communities have in common is the need to build disaster resilience—and that's where CANVAS for Recovery and Resiliency comes in.    Co-founded by our host, Jennifer Thompson and CityTech Strategy Group's President, Steve Crout, CANVAS' main mission is to help communities prepare for disasters through cross-sector collaborations. They work with local leaders, community members, and organizations that are experienced in the disaster recovery and mitigation space to help advocate for local communities affected by disasters. Together, they aim to “listen locally, act regionally, and reform nationally”.    Listen in as Jennifer and Steve discuss the inspiration behind this initiative, what resiliency means, where the focus should be when it comes to building community resilience, how we can keep the continuity in disaster preparedness, how we can better address compound disasters, what makes fundings hard to access, and how leveraging the 5G network can help improve communication during a disaster.  Connect with After The Fire USA:  Website: https://afterthefireusa.org/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RebuildNorthBay/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/erTheFireUSA Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/afterthefireusa/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/atf3r YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuTefxZgWUJkDVoZGZQpxgQ Highlights: 02:15 Could We Do More?   11:55 Keep the Continuity in Disaster Preparedness 16:39 Barriers to Accessing Fund 20:53 CANVAS for Disaster Recovery and Resiliency 26:23 Equity in Disaster 28:49 Addressing Compound Disasters 33:19 Improving Communication During Disaster
