Dale also shares insights into the importance of education reform, workforce development, and the convergence of technology across all sectors. This conversation delves into the intersection of business, public policy, and education, offering valuable insights for anyone interested in the future of Wisconsin's economy and the essential skills needed to thrive in it.What You'll Learn:Why Microsoft chose Southeast Wisconsin for its massive AI investment and what it means for the regionHow the convergence of technology is reshaping industries and what business leaders need to knowThe innovative education programs in high schools that are preparing students for the future workforceLeadership lessons from Dale's time in the military and public service that are influencing his approach at MMACThe key public policy challenges and opportunities that will shape our economic futureQuotable Moments:"Information technology can no longer be viewed as a standalone sector—it's the water that the fish swim in. Whether you're in manufacturing, healthcare, or hospitality, technology is now at the core of what you do."3 Big Takeaways from this Episode:The integration of technology is no longer optional, but essential across all industries: Dale emphasizes that information technology has become the foundational element driving sectors from manufacturing to healthcare. He argues that leaders who fail to recognize this convergence will struggle to remain competitive in an increasingly tech-driven world.Effective education reform requires breaking down traditional silos and fostering collaboration: Dale discusses the importance of integrating technical education into high schools and building stronger connections between K-12 districts, technical colleges, and businesses. These partnerships will prepare students with the skills needed for the future workforce, particularly in regions like Southeast Wisconsin.Leadership in today's complex environment demands authenticity and a commitment to lifelong learning: Drawing from his experiences in the military and public service, Dale explains that true leadership is about being ethical, adaptable, and always willing to learn. Leaders must navigate diverse challenges, whether in business or public policy, by staying informed and making decisions grounded in both integrity and knowledge.Resources in this Episode:To learn more about the MMAC, visit: https://www.mmac.org/Connect with MMAC:LinkedIn  |  Instagram  |  YouTube  |  Connect with Dale on LinkedInMore notes & resources on the episode page: https:Instagram - Facebook - YouTube - TikTok - Twitter - LinkedIn

Attract Manufacturing Business & Talent on a Regional Scale - Tim Sheehy, President of the MMAC

With all the reshoring of manufacturing to the US, cities across the country are competing to be destinations for high-quality businesses and talent that will foster economic growth for their communities. The Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce (MMAC) is on such a mission, working to make Milwaukee a "globally competitive region that fosters high value employment to sustain a vibrant quality of life for all."Tim Sheehy has led the MMAC as President for 31 years. Now more than ever, his focus to "think globally, act locally" is key to attracting and retaining the industry that is at the heart of the region: manufacturing. With 300,000 people in southeast Wisconsin employed in the industry, the area is #2 in the country for a workforce in manufacturing (per capita). Today, Tim's focus is on ensuring the region can support manufacturing's demand for skilled talent, a reliable supply chain, and the resources to upskill and reskill the incumbent workforce as businesses invest in automation and Industry 4.0.In this episode, we talk about the challenges and strategies for building and retaining a strong manufacturing region in 2023, how to engage education in the effort, and how to approach these workforce challenges from a broad, regional perspective.3 Big Takeaways from this episode:Regions should double down on what makes them great: Manufacturing is in Milwaukee's DNA. While the region is broadening its identity as a destination for tech, sports and leisure, the heart of Milwaukee will always be manufacturing. Tim gives advice to regions looking to attract more businesses and talent in manufacturing and industrial sectors - and it centers around sticking with what you're best at. He also shares how these efforts have brought large employers like Haribo to the region.Students can't be what they can't see: If we want to inspire students toward skilled careers and keep them in the region, we need to expose them to the opportunities and pathways while they're in the K-12 system. MMAC has partnered with organizations like Microsoft to provide hands-on technology programming that opens doors for these students. He also shares some upcoming projects involving nonprofits and industrial partners that will usher in new advanced manufacturing education in the region.Business - education partnerships thrive when expectations are set early on: Employers and educators need to be open and clear about their needs and goals at the outset of any strong partnership - this means establishing expectations early on. Education needs to know what's going on in the workforce, and employers need to understand what's being taught in the classroom. Most of all, these partnerships are about more than a half-day field trip. Career exposure and skill-based learning efforts must be mapped through the eyes of a student. ResourcesTo learn more about the MMAC, visit their website: mmac.orgConnect with MMAC on social media:LinkedIn  |  Twitter  |  Instagram  |  YouTubeEpisode page: https://techedpodcast.com/mmac/Instagram - Facebook - YouTube - TikTok - Twitter - LinkedIn

Former Vice President Joe Biden leads President Donald Trump in national public opinion polls by an average of about 9%. Could some of that gap be because some people who actually back the Republican incumbent aren't responding to pollsters? A national pollster who does opinion surveys for the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce took on the question Tuesday, during an MMAC online forum. Kenneth Goldstein is professor of politics at the University of San Francisco and used to work at UW-Madison. Goldstein said some conservatives may be reluctant to respond these days. "When your side is doing well, you're much happier to talk to a pollster. When your side is having a tough week, and Republicans had a tough week, you're less likely to talk to pollsters,” he said. Polls released during the last month in Wisconsin show Biden ahead of Trump by between four and six percentage points. Goldstein said people refusing to talk doesn't explain all of that difference.
