From it's early days in the 1920's news was an important part of radio. The first newscasts were little more than announcers reading press releases and police reports. In the 1930s and 40s, network newscasts evolved into audio versions of newspaper columns. During the World War Two and into the 1950s there was the arrival of the radio news anchor, who presented reporters on the scene, with commentary confined to the people actually making the news. You're hear this transition develop over decades of radio news coverage. Introductory audio gives background on Dick "Two-Ton" Baker and his upbeat entertaining, piano playing and singing, but short programs. He performed for 50 years and on this track you will hear one of his 14-15 min shows from WGN, Chicago and out nationwide via Mutual Radio Network and two 4 min shows... that were used for stations to make announcements of some sorts more entertaining. Dick Baker loved his work and the fact that he got paid for doing something he loved was a bonus. I discovered this show by accident and thought it was unique and entertaining mostly because the man not only had talent, but a sense of humor and a level of energy that just says, "I love what I do and I hope you do too!" This track will reside in the "Variety - Comedy - Musical" Playlist.
Audio intro to the story gives a brief description of the series and introduces the featured track "The River Man"... Though this was a low budget series that was heard on the Mutual Radio Network... it was produced in NYC and used members of what they used to call "Radio Actors Row"... many were very talented and more than a few got quite famous as time went on, but they were generally strong actors. This track will be stored in the "Horror/Suspense" Playlist on this podcast originating from Soundcloud.com
