Parental discretion is strongly advised.IN THIS EPISODE: “Knock” by Fredrik Brown starts with a short-short story based on the following text of Thomas Bailey Aldrich: ***“Imagine all human beings swept off the face of the earth, excepting one man. Imagine this man in some vast city, New York or London. Imagine him on the third or fourth day of his solitude sitting in a house and hearing a ring at the door-bell!”*** Fredric Brown condensed this text to read "a sweet little horror story that is only two sentences long". Brown's short story then goes on to elaborate on those two sentences and builds a more complete plot around them. “Knock” was originally published in the December 1948 issue of Thrilling Wonder Stories. There have been three different radio adaptations (Dimension X, X Minus One and the Sci Fi Channel's Seeing Ear Theatre). And now it gets another adaptation – in this episode. The story was also reprinted in The Best Science Fiction Stories: 1949.SOURCES AND RESOURCES FROM THE EPISODE…“Knock” by Fredrik Brown: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/4cc9433d=====(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. On Ron's Amazing Stories we dive into the fascinating world of science fiction. Ron will explore the origins of science fiction and its development through the vibrant era of pulp magazines. Many credit the genre to the imaginative minds of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne, but it was truly the pulp magazines of the 1930s to the 1950s that brought science fiction into the spotlight, inspiring countless readers with their thrilling tales. In our first story today, "Operation Distress" by Lester del Rey, we explore the dangers of space travel and the ever-present fear of unknown diseases. As we stand on the brink of journeys to Mars, this story brings an eerie relevance to our current times. Lester del Rey, also known as Leonard Knapp, was a prolific writer of the pulp era and contributed significantly to the development of science fiction as we know it today. And in our second tale, "First Contact" from the SciFi series Dimension X, we venture into the depths of space where humans meet an alien civilization for the first time. This story is a captivating exploration of diplomacy and the mysteries of the universe, reminding us of the infinite possibilities that lie beyond. Shadows on the Radio: Exploring Dimension X and The Shadow Radio, once the dominant form of entertainment, brought listeners into worlds of wonder and intrigue. Two iconic programs, "Dimension X" and "The Shadow," stand as testaments to the power of audio storytelling. The Shadow: A master of disguise and deception, "The Shadow" prowled the night, bringing justice to a world teeming with criminals. This pulp fiction hero, with his iconic "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!" introduction, became a cultural phenomenon. The show's blend of mystery, intrigue, and supernatural elements captivated listeners, creating a thrilling and atmospheric listening experience. Dimension X: A journey into the unknown, "Dimension X" captivated audiences with its exploration of science fiction themes. Each episode delved into a different tale, from encounters with alien civilizations to the perils of technological advancements. The show's strength lay in its atmospheric sound design and its ability to evoke a sense of wonder and unease. It wasn't just about the fantastical; "Dimension X" often grappled with philosophical questions about humanity's place in the universe and the potential consequences of our actions. I've been on an old-time radio kick recently, listening to shows like “The Whistler”, “Dimension X”, and “Strange Tales”. One of my favorite shows is called “X-Minus One”. It was a half-hour science fiction radio drama series that was broadcast from April 24, 1955 to January 9, 1958 in various timeslots on NBC radio. At the end of each episode they tell you where the stories they used came from before they adapted them for radio – and one of those sources was the publication “Astounding Science Fiction Magazine”. I jumped online to see if there were old copies I could look at, and I found a book – an anthology of many of the stories from that magazine. The book was published in 1954 The story was entitled “First Contact”, written by Murray Leinster in 1945. The story is credited as one of the first instances of a universal translator in science fiction. So influential is the story that it won a retro Hugo Award for Best Novelette in 1996.SOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…“First Contact” by Murray Leister from “Astounding S-F Anthology”: https://amzn.to/3zhbBWiWeird Darkness theme by Alibi Music Library.= = = = =(Over time links seen above may become invalid, disappear, or have different content.
