In this episode, Tim Koller, co-author of Valuation and a leading authority on corporate finance, offers a substantive examination of capital allocation decisions under real-world constraints. The discussion moves beyond theory to explore how CEOs and CFOs should approach resource deployment in mature, capital-rich companies—where investment opportunities are limited not due to lack of ambition but due to economic reality. Key insights include: - Share Buybacks as Rational Policy: Many firms undertaking significant buybacks—particularly in tech, life sciences, and consumer products—do so because they generate more cash than they can reinvest profitably. Koller argues that, in such cases, returning excess capital to shareholders is not a sign of strategic failure but of disciplined decision-making. - The Fallacy of Diversification Without Advantage: Koller highlights repeated failures by capital-rich companies that expand into unrelated sectors to deploy cash, citing historical missteps in energy, utilities, and industrials. He emphasizes the need to assess whether the firm has a genuine competitive advantage before moving beyond its core business. - Granular Leadership in Resource Allocation: Effective CEOs are directly engaged with capital allocation at the business-unit level. Delegating such decisions without maintaining enterprise-wide oversight often leads to underinvestment in high-return growth areas and misaligned incentives at the divisional level. - The Perils of Uniform Cost-Cutting Mandates: Broad directives to improve margins often result in cuts to product development and customer experience—leading to long-term degradation despite short-term financial gains. Koller stresses the importance of distinguishing between cost efficiencies that enhance value and those that erode it. - Timing and Judgment in Capital Deployment: In cyclical, capital-intensive sectors such as chemicals and energy, building capacity in sync with competitors can destroy value. Koller calls for contrarian timing, grounded in independent analysis, even when boards and markets are predisposed to follow the cycle. Additional themes include the underuse of postmortems in capital projects, the misalignment between project planners and operators, and the distinction between executional and experimental failure. Throughout, Koller reiterates that sound capital allocation depends not only on financial modeling, but also on institutional learning, leadership judgment, and clarity of strategic intent. This conversation offers practical, senior-level guidance for executives, board members, and investors who must navigate capital planning amid structural constraints, investor pressures, and organizational complexity. Until now, there has been little legal scholarly attention paid to youth sport or its reform.
Ihr seid bei „On the Way to New Work“ – heute mit Daniel Koller.

How do you talk money without losing trust—or your audience? From quarterly earnings calls to investor pitches, the world of financial communication is a tightrope walk of clarity, persuasion, and credibility. What makes numbers sound good? When does transparent/positive become too transparent/positive? And why does jargon sometimes feel like the best financial armour? Tune in for a lively dive into the art (?) of financial storytelling—with three experts sharing plenty of insights, red flags, laughs, and a nudge to rethink your next fiscal update and/or investment, especially when your are being pandered to with pathos and patriotism. Long notes: In this episode we discuss financial communication and start with readability. A few selected studies are: Bonsall, S. B., & Miller, B. P. (2017). The impact of narrative disclosure readability on bond ratings and the cost of debt. Review of Accounting Studies, 22, 608-643. Huong Dau, N., Van Nguyen, D., & Thi Thanh Diem, H. (2024). Annual report readability and firms' investment decisions. Cogent Economics and Finance, 12(1). https://doi.org/10.1080/23322039.2023.2296230 Li, F. (2008). Annual report readability, current earnings, and earnings persistence. Journal of Accounting and Economics, 45 (2-3), 221-247. Both Bernard and Erika mention PhD work on financial communication. Bernard's student Nils Smeuninx completed his thesis in 2018; the title is “Dear Stakeholder. Exploring the language of sustainability reporting: A closer look at readability, sentiment and perception”. Erika refers to a PhD study on how small investors respond to plain English as opposed to more complex or less readable text: Rennekamp, K. (2012). The complexity of qualitative accounting disclosures: Managers' choices and investors. Cornell Theses and Dissertations. https://hdl.handle.net/1813/31452 For her part, Veronika co-supervised a student - Xiaoxi Wu, now at Bocconi University in Milan (Italy) - with the Accounting department at Lancaster University (UK), resulting in this article: Koller, V., & Wu, X. (2023). Analysts' identity negotiations and politeness behaviour in earnings calls of U.S. firms with extreme earnings changes. Corporate Communications, 28(5), 769-787. DOI: 10.1108/CCIJ-08-2022-0098 Erika mentions the Juno app, which is designed to explain technical financial language to lay investors. Bernard then refers to Veronika's first foray into financial communication and narrative accounting: Merkl-Davies, D. M., & Koller, V. (2012). “Metaphoring” people out of this world: A critical discourse analysis of a chairman's statement of a UK defence firm. Accounting Forum, 36(3), 178-193. An agentless passive, the sentence ‘mistakes were made' helps to avoid blaming anyone for making mistakes. It has become a catchphrase, often used humorously to hint at disaster, including in gifs and memes Back to financial communication: Referring to the gendered metaphors that it often features, Erika mentions this book chapter: Boggio, C., Fornero, E., Prast, H., & Sanders, J. (2017). Seven ways to knit your portfolio: Is investor communication neutral? In Garzone, G., Catenaccio, P., Grego, K., & Doerr, R. (eds) Specialised and Professional Discourse Across Media and Genres (pp. 137-160). Ledizioni. A cross-cultural study into accounting language is Doupnik, T. S. and Richter, M. (2004), The impact of culture on the interpretation of in-context verbal probability expressions. Journal of International Accounting Research, 3(1), 1-20. In the first part of the episode, we also discuss tone as an important concept in financial communication. Intriguingly, media studies have shown that coverage in itself is good enough for the so-called “markets” (investors, analysts, fund managers) to have a positive attitude towards a company: Engelberg, J. E., & Parsons, C. A. (2011). The causal impact of media in financial markets. Journal of Finance, 66(1), 67-97. Finally, the 2019 annual report by Lockheed Martin, which includes the CEO statement that we analyse at the end of the episode. For more details make sure you visit our blog! We will be back in 2025, with some changes to the podcast - stay tuned

Suzanne Koller, a Paris-based fashion stylist and art director, is renowned for her impactful contributions to the fashion industry. Cofounding Petronio Associates in 1993 and Self Service Magazine in 1994, she worked with prestigious clients and curated a unique creative vision. Transitioning to become the fashion director of Vogue Paris and later M le Magazine du Monde, Koller continues to shape the industry with her collaborations and editorial work. More interested in holistic artistry than anything else, Koller keeps herself out of her comfort zone to stay curious and true to herself—which is what's contemporary now. Episode Highlights: Koller, who was born and raised in Vienna, feels “very Austrian.” She moved to Germany, and then to Switzerland, where she studied graphic design. She's lived in France for over 30 years. Knowing from her teen years that she wanted to be an art director, Koller saw the glamour of working for a magazine. She became an intern at Elle magazine in Paris before interning in graphic design at Glamour—where she was first introduced to the idea of working in fashion. As a consultant, stylist, and art director, Koller found it exciting to make her own way with Self Service and to change hats, working with smaller magazines to avoid creative constraints. Koller focuses less on fashion and more on individual subjects, orienting herself toward documenting women through time in collaborative projects. Driven by long-standing obsessions, her current interest is finding emerging talent and working with a new generation of creatives. Keeping herself out of her comfort zone helps maintain her energy and curiosity even as she considers herself a workaholic. Koller is not driven by nostalgia but more inspired by the now, whether in the supermarket perusing ingredients, going to a museum, people-watching, or taking a flight. She believes in the significance of “emptying [her] brain” periodically. In an age of over-engagement with social media, what's contemporary to her now is staying true to oneself. Tune in for grounded and speculative takes on how technology—and, in particular, AI—is inspiring change and transforming the future. Hosted by Reid Hoffman and Aria Finger, each episode features an interview with an ambitious builder or deep thinker on a topic, from art to geopolitics and from healthcare to education.
