In this fifth episode of our third season we had the pleasure of speaking with Paul Charles of Charles Wine Company! In our conversation we talked about: Being one of 16 children! Wine Kits Jungle Juice Lodi, CA So much more! Paul's Bio: The Los Angeles-based Charles Wine Company was founded by Paul Charles, De'Ondre Charles and Dr. Cherise Moore in 2012 and launched its first label in 2014. Their dream started in 2007 with a trip to Temecula Valley Wine Country for wine tasting, which lead them to the cellar with the winemaker/owner doing a barrel tasting. This introduction sparked Paul's interest to purchase his first premium wine kit, which began their journey. After a few successful bottles, Paul decided to convert his backyard into a small vineyard, growing a few rows of Cabernet and Zinfandel. The grapes were crushed by hand to produce our first bottle of wine. Paul landed a side job in the industry and began to work for a large wine producer selling their Boutique wines along the California Coast in large box store outlets. Then after, Paul started his own Wine Broker service (Varietal Wine Brokers) and distributed premium/boutique wines for five wineries. The Team took two weeks to travel across the United States visiting wineries from Florida to California. Then after they started their journey abroad, stopping off in Spain, France, Switzerland, Greece and Italy. They also made it a priority to meet and work with winemakers at their various stops, whose passion rubbed off on Paul enough he decided to launch their own label. The Last Five Sips: If money were no object, what bottle of wine would you splurge on and why? The most expensive wines in Bordeaux and sharing them with Friends Who would you love to share a bottle with, living or deceased? Grandmother, Father and President Obama What are some of the things you do or read to keep up to speed on what is happening in the wine industry? Being “in the field” and out there talking to people What advice would you give you your 22 year old self? Keep moving and don't' settle! When you finish your day and sit down with your favorite glass of wine, what is on your music playlist? Aired 11/11/08 Last week during my two hour election day special, I said the following: When the nation is in the mood for change, it responds to charismatic optimists. FDR, JFK, Reagan, Clinton. The first time I saw Barack Obama on television at the 2004 convention, I felt not just that I had seen an excellent politician, but that I might have experienced an enlightened being. That it turns out he's an excellent politician as well as a superb manager gives me great hope. Our multiple severe crises may have finally broken through our culture of distraction enough that we are ready to ask questions, question answers and consider fundamental change. Barack Obama may be the ideal President for this moment. I won't interview a guest in depth on this show, though I've invited a number of notables to join me for a few minutes. I'll share my thoughts and feelings and maybe some news and opinion. And I invite you to join me to do the same. When I got a count-down keychain for Christmas last year, there were 390 days left till Bush's Last Day. Now that key chain says 70 and the mood in the country says he's already gone. We've got 60 minutes to celebrate. I'd like callers to answer three questions: What's your reaction to the election? What next steps would you like to see from Obama? What next steps do you think people ought to take? Join me in moving from "why we can't" to "how we will."

(There was a very short period in Mike's life where he thought he could handle his teaching job, write a book, host The Politics Guys, and start a new podcast – Politics Plus. It soon became evident to Mike how insane trying to do all this at once was, and so he quickly shut down Politics Plus. But before he did, he'd posted four interviews – all of which he thinks are pretty good and are worth sharing with you as Politics Guys bonus episodes.) Mike talks with Beck Dorey-Stein, who worked as a White House stenographer from 2012 – 2017. She's written about her experiences in the just released book, From the Corner of the Oval ( https://amzn.to/2N2FkEW ). They discuss: * What White House stenographers do * How being in the White House changed how Beck felt about politics * If the White House is anything like the TV show The West Wing * The insane hours and workloads of White House staffers * What happens behind the scenes during crises * ‘Living the dream' in the Obama administration * Her view of President Obama * What it was like to come to work the day after Donald Trump was elected * What it was like working in the Trump administration * And lots more *Listener support helps make The Politics Guys possible*.
