Webb Simpson won this past week's Waste Management Phoenix Open in a playoff against Tony Finau. As usual, Simpson's trusted right-hand man (Paul Tesori) was by his side the entire time. In fact, it was probably all Paul when Webb hit his first hole-in-one of his professional career on Saturday. In honor of Simpson winning, we thought this would be a good time to replay our 2018 episode when Paul Tesori joined us. Paul is very well-respected and has a great personality. You are sure to enjoy this interview. See original show notes below... Paul Tesori is the caddie for professional golfer Webb Simpson. Paul was on the bag when Webb won the 2012 U.S. Open and 2018 THE PLAYERS Championship. In addition to Webb Simpson, Paul has caddied for some of the best golfers in the world including former #1 player Vijay Singh. In total, he has more than 20 wins as a PGA caddie.  We caught up with Paul between THE PLAYERS and the Open Championship (to be held at Carnoustie, Scotland). The memories of the record-setting performance at THE PLAYERS was still fresh in his mind (especially since it is played at TPC Sawgrass, which is Paul’s home course). Webb led THE PLAYERS Championship from start to finish. Along the way, he equaled the course record with his 2nd-round 63, and also the 36-hole and 54-hole PLAYERS scoring records. With the win, Webb became just the 9th player to have won THE PLAYERS and a U.S. Open. The victory also made Webb World Golf Hall of Fame eligible in the future.  Paul is a Florida native and attended the University of Florida. He grew up loving sports and played golf and baseball. He was such a good golfer that he even played 21 events on the PGA Tour himself. Paul and his wife Michelle run the Tesori Family Foundation, which was founded in 2009. The foundation helps supports various charities throughout the country with focuses ranging from childhood homelessness to battered women’s shelters, from children battling disease like cancer to animal rescue charities like the Jacksonville Humane Society.  In today’s episode, we discuss: Webb’s runaway win at the 2018 Players Championship Why mental toughness is important in golf and life What he says to a golfer during a round Caddie-Golfer relationships, especially after breakups   Resources, Books, and Links Mentioned in the Podcast Paul’s Twitter: @PaulTesori Michelle Tesori’s Twitter: @MrsTesori FoundationTwitter: @TesoriFamilyFdt Foundation Website: TesoriFamilyFoundation.org Foundation Facebook: Facebook.com/TesoriFamilyFoundation Foundation Instagram: @TesoriFamilyFdt PTI Sports Marketing: www.PassionTalentIntegrity.com Webb Simpson’s Twitter: @WebbSimpson1 Articles of interest … “PGA Tour Caddie ‘Walks a Mile in my Shoes’ to Raise Funds for Family Foundation” “How PGA Tour Caddie Paul Tesori Brings God into Golf” “Webb Simpson Finds Kindred Spirit in Caddie Paul Tesori” (ESPN article from when they first joined forces in 2012) “Jordan Spieth Lends a Hand to a Caddie with a Heartfelt Mission”  Past “Success is a Choice” podcast episodes of interest . . . My ‘Cringe' Moment One thing they don't teach you in college is how to value and develop relationships - with the athletes, the parents, your coaches My ‘Ah-Ha Moment' Stop chasing the word success and start chasing the word impact Teaching Children & Keeping it Fun Keep it fun! Don't expect perfection - instead enjoy the process of incremental improvements Have very few rules 'We don't do 10 reps.  We do one perfect rep ten times' HUGE IDEA #1 - 'At the youth level of sports - you don't want more reps- you want better reps.'  More leads to drudgery and hating the sport.  Better leads to excitement and loving the sport. Best Stolen Idea/Advice from another Coach Praise in public.  If needed criticize in private. Discipline Have the kids take a picture of their bed made in the morning and send it to one of the coaches - 'You can't start the day undisciplined then expect to be disciplined the rest of the day' Coach doesn't like making them run as a punishment - we want them to love exercise and running - so don't use it as a punishment.  'If they miss a layup - don't have them run - have them practice layups!' Reward and Recognition Count high-fives during a practice.  Then try to beat that number in a future practice. At the end of practice - have players say something positive about a teammate. Spend one practice evaluating players' GPA - Good Positive Attitude.  Are they giving a high-five coming off the field; are they picking up a teammate's water bottle, etc.   If there's a bunch of 4.0's - the team spirit is good, if not - think of ways to recognize those who have the best GPA to encourage the whole team to raise the GPA level. Mental Edge HUGE IDEA #2 - How do you de-emphasize the importance of the moment?  One method is a trigger mechanism - something you have practiced and evaluated what works with each individual - something to get the player to smile and realize it's just a game.  Maybe it's slapping your leg.  Maybe it's a teammate saying 'Spongebob is ugly', etc.  But you have to practice putting kids in those situations during practice! The One that Got Away Coach Taylor believes in living/playing present - so doesn't get caught up in reliving wins and losses in the past.
