Every year I step completely outside education and bring back five books that have nothing to do with schools — and everything to do with building one. This is my 2026 Summer Reading List, and it's the hardest one I've ever put together. None of these books are education books. But every single one has something real to say about the culture you're trying to build — and the kind of principal you're becoming while you build it. The 5 books on this year's list: Leading with Dignity by Donna Hicks Originals by Adam Grant One Word That Will Change Your Life by Jon Gordon, Dan Britton & Jimmy Page Strong Ground by Brené Brown The U.S. Constitution: A Comprehensive and Annotated Guide for the Modern Reader by Melissa Murray After you watch, I'm curious. Tell me what books you're reading right now in the comments. I'll be reading every one and who knows? Your suggestion might just end up on next year's list.
What if the key to becoming a better leader is not adding more goals to your list but stripping everything down to just one word? This week, Jon Goehring and Coach Jim Johnson sit down with Dan Britton, speaker, writer, coach, former professional lacrosse player, 34 year veteran of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, founder of Sports Life Leadership, and co-author of nine books including the bestselling One Word, written alongside Jon Gordon and Jimmy Page. This conversation is one of the most personal and practically powerful the Lounge has delivered.Dan opens with a compelling vision of faith-based servant leadership, drawing on the example of Jesus at the last supper to illustrate what it looks like when a leader walks into every room with the posture of someone who is there to serve rather than to be served. He makes the case that servant leadership is not a soft concept but the most transformational leadership model in history, and challenges every listener to ask whether they are leading from a position of ego or a posture of humility. The conversation shifts into one of the richest discussions of coaching and correction the Lounge has had. Dan shares the lesson his quiet, unassuming high school football coach Sleepy Thompson taught him about accentuating the positive, and then draws a critical distinction that every leader needs to hear: there is a fundamental difference between being critical and offering correction, and great leaders know how to hold their people accountable without ever making them feel shamed.Dan then walks Jon and Coach through the one word concept, starting with the story of how a simple question from a friend on a three hour road trip in 1999 exposed the seven pages of goals he had been writing every year that he never actually completed. He explains why one word works where long goal lists fail, the difference between to do goals and to be goals, and how a single word can become the lens through which every dimension of your life, physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, relational, and financial, comes into focus throughout an entire year. The episode also delivers a masterclass on building your personal dream team, including the warriors who lock arms with you as peers, the watchmen who sit on the wall and see what you cannot yet see, and the workmen you are pouring into as a mentor. Dan shares how this framework carried him through one of the hardest transitions of his life when he left FCA after three decades and had to rediscover his identity from the ground up.The episode closes with Dan's two hour morning discipline routine, built over 35 years of leading in ministry, and a challenge to every leader to get right inside their own circle before unleashing themselves on the world around them.Whether you are drowning in goals that never seem to get done, navigating a major life transition, or simply looking for a leadership framework rooted in something deeper than ambition, this episode will stay with you.Connect with Dan: sportslifeleadership.com Grab One Word on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Word-That-Will-Change-Expanded/dp/1118809424

What if becoming extraordinary isn't really about your own habits — it's about the habits you build that make everyone around you better? In this episode, we sit down with Jon Gordon, author of 33 books and 18 bestsellers, to explore seven habits that transform ordinary people into the kind of person others genuinely want to be around. We explore how the ratio of positive to negative interactions determines whether your relationships thrive, why shouting praise and whispering criticism builds deeper trust than you'd expect, and how the abundance mindset — giving freely, making the pie bigger, winning the person instead of the argument — creates energy that lifts everyone in your orbit.

“Send Coach John a message”From Jon Gordon (@JonGordon11) came this gem on what he calls a “MindsetMonday”. “Don't let old battles keep you from new victories.” I've done this plenty of times. Keep re-hashing something in my head from my past that is holding me back from my current day / in the moment things I should be doing. This became clear again not because I saw this post, but actually going through it because of my recent surgery. So much stuff we tend to carry around and if you are like me, sometimes that old stuff gets in the way of doing new & great things. Something good for me to work on while I have a bit more time on my hands as I heal up. Thanks for listening. On this episode of The Jon Gordon Podcast, Jon Gordon sits down with Micah McElveen, founder of Vapor Ministries, for a remarkable conversation about purpose, transformation, and living a life that echoes in eternity. Micah McElveen's story begins with devastating adversity—an accident as a teenager that left him dead on the beach, miraculously brought back to life, but facing total paralysis and a future filled with uncertainty. As Micah McElveen recounts his journey from ICU to recovering movement, wrestling with his identity, and enduring years of grueling rehab, he shares how those hardships became the ground where faith, empathy, and a deep sense of purpose were forged. From being the popular quarterback to the overlooked kid in the shadows, his perspective shifted to one of compassion and a desire to leverage his second chance to serve others. Through honest reflection, Micah McElveen opens up about the pain and mystery of near-death experiences, the gradual process of rediscovering hope, and how desperate pursuit of God's presence preceded a revelation of purpose. Ultimately, this journey led him to start Vapor Ministries—an organization dedicated to alleviating extreme poverty, empowering communities, and sharing practical hope with thousands across Africa and Haiti. Listeners will hear powerful themes of empathy, resilience, living with urgency, and the eternal significance of investing your "vapor"—this brief life—for something far greater than yourself. Whether you're navigating adversity, seeking clarity on your own purpose, or wondering if brokenness can become a gift, this episode offers hope, inspiration, and a stirring reminder that your hardest moments can become the starting point for extraordinary impact. About Micah: In 1995, Micah learned life was a Vapor when he broke his neck in a near-fatal surfing accident. God also opened his eyes to purpose. Not able to play football, he picked up soccer and went on to play in college, where he earned a degree in Intercultural Studies. There Micah met his bride and a shared passion to serve the poor and reach the lost emerged. In graduate school, he traveled to Africa and was broken by extreme poverty. Awakened by the experience, a vision to alleviate poverty and multiply disciples birthed Vapor Ministries. He is a follower of Jesus, a husband to Audrey, and a father to Arrow and Given. Author of, "Dying For Purpose, " Micah speaks across the country inspiring people to make a difference while providing leadership for Vapor Ministries. Money movement services are provided by Intuit Payments Inc., licensed as a Money Transmitter by the New York State Department of Financial Services What if the biggest thing holding you back right now isn't failure… but the quiet ways you're letting yourself play small? In this mashup episode, I brought together some incredibly powerful voices to challenge the way you think about your mindset, your habits, and ultimately your life. You're going to hear from Stephen Scoggins, Jon Gordon, Titus O'Neil, Rich Diviney, and Scott Galloway, and every one of them delivers a different angle on what it really takes to break through and become the person you were meant to be. This is not surface-level motivation. This is about confronting the truth of where you are and deciding to rise anyway. Stephen Scoggins shares how your past does not disqualify you, but it can trap you if you let it define your identity. Jon Gordon brings the energy and reminds you that positivity is not naive, it is a competitive advantage. Titus O'Neil opens up about pain, adversity, and choosing to turn your struggles into purpose. Rich Diviney breaks down the idea that elite performance is built through preparation and discipline long before the moment arrives. And Scott Galloway gives you a real-world perspective on discipline, choices, and the trade-offs required to build a meaningful life. Every conversation points back to one thing. You have more control than you think, but you have to take it. I also get real with you in this episode about the internal battles that most people never talk about. The comparison game, the need for approval, and the subtle ways we sabotage our own happiness and progress. If you are constantly measuring yourself against others, you are draining your energy and robbing yourself of fulfillment. That is one of the most dangerous weapons you can use against yourself, and most people don't even realize they are doing it. We also dig into the truth about what actually kills dreams. It is not a lack of talent. It is not even failure. It is discouragement, distraction, and the slow drift away from your purpose. When you become aware of those forces, they begin to lose their power over you. That awareness is where your breakthrough starts. That is where you take your life back. This episode is a wake-up call. You were not born to live average. You were not meant to play small or sit on the sidelines of your own life. You are in a race to become the best version of yourself, and every decision you make is either moving you closer or further away. It is time to get intentional. It is time to raise your standard. It is time to max out. Key Takeaways: Why your past only has power if you attach your identity to it How positivity and energy can become your greatest competitive edge The hidden danger of comparison and how it steals your happiness The real reason most people fall short of their potential How elite performers build confidence through preparation and discipline Why awareness is the first step to breaking negative patterns The importance of taking control of your life instead of drifting through it

“Send Coach John a message”As someone who loves coffee, the “Coffee Bean” book is near and dear to my heart. Found this post from Damon West (@damonwest7) “Integrity isn't proven in public, it's revealed in private when no one is around. Be the same person either way. That's how you change the environment.” He's right on target with this for sure. The picture post that he shared said this: “Anyone can do the right thing when people are looking. Being a Coffee Bean means you do it when no one's watching. That's integrity and that's what transforms the water.” Remember the story about the coffee bean transforming the pot of boiling water. The carrot doesn't do it, it gets too soft. The egg doesn't do it either, it gets too hard. Wonderful lessons for all of us. “Send Coach John a message”This one came from someone that I've been connecting with for a long time and yet, this message is as fresh and powerful as seeing it for the first time. Jon Gordon (@JonGordon11) shared this gem: “The word ‘encourage' means to ‘put courage' into someone. Encourage someone today and give them some courage to take on the day.” Jon Gordon is right on target with this message. The world needs this now more than ever. You know something… every time I say that “the world needs it now more than ever”, I really mean it!! Also remember, it's the little things done all around us that add up to BIG things that help so many people around the world. I love this message and I think we can all do exactly what it says!! Chris Malleo is a former Northwestern University and professional football player. After retiring from paying, he became head coach at The Peddie School in New Jersey, and led a perennial underachieving team to a #1 national ranking through a system of culture, belief, and standards. While at Peddie, Chris hired an incredible coach named Frankie Kineavy. Frankie was non verbal, and had suffered from cerebral palsy since birth, yet soon Chris, his staff and his players realized that while Frankie was not your typical football coach, he was one of the best leaders any of them had ever met. Chris tells that story in his new book The ChairLeader, a best selling book on leadership, connection, and courage, featuring a foreword by Hall of Fame coach Jay Wright and endorsements from bestselling author Jon Gordon, Clemson Head Coach Dabo Swinney, and Jersey Mike's Founder and CEO Peter Cancro. In our discussion, John and Chris discuss his journey to becoming a coach, the incredible impact Frankie had on the Peddie program, and the leadership lessons that he retells in his book. “Send Coach John a message”Today being the day that we are honoring Martin Luther King, Jr., I found a post from Jon Gordon (@JonGordon11) and his #MindsetMonday thoughts shared this quote: “If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” What a powerful reminder for every single day, but especially today! I found this catching my eye for many reasons - one for sure is that I need to keep moving forward in my attempt to not let negativity, anger, hatred, etc., enter into my heart and mind. Too much of the BS out there that I unfortunately let into my life and I can't let it go. This morning was no exception. People I know, like and thought I respected, keep putting stuff out there that simply sets to tear apart and cause trouble. I will keep moving forward, however I have to, so that I can keep encouraging others, putting out things that help people on their life's journey, along with trying to balance out the “crud” that people put out there. One of the things that I remind myself of is that the people that put out the “crud”, are really sharing what they are all about, the problems they have in life, the hurt they are going through, etc. It's worth my efforts every day for sure! “Send Coach John a message”I was reading a passage from Brian Johnson's book “Arete” and it's all about having “Rebound Days”. It's all about bouncing back from tough days. Great quote from George Leonard, where he reminds us to have a “willingness to take one step back for every two forward, sometimes vice-versa.” It's a key to simply understand that this happens to everyone and at times, it's taking 4 or 5 steps backwards then going sideways and then eventually going in a forward direction. I was connecting with Jon Gordon too (@JonGordon11) and he had a leadership training session the past two days - free too! Those things are out there my friends. We need to keep investing in ourselves so that when we do get knocked backwards and down in life (which we will), we will have the sense, confidence and the tools to get back up and get going again. Great stuff is out there. Find it. Keep connecting with it - it's worth it!! Thanks for listening. Built Not Born 2025 Wrap-Up | 100% Audience Growth, Lessons from My Dad & What's Coming in 2026
“Send Coach John a message”Sitting here with my co-producer on my lap (our dog), I'm thinking about it being the end of another year and what is coming in the next year. So many thoughts going through my mind, but everyone's mind. For me this is tying into my “one word” for 2026. It's not the only word I will focus in on, but it will be one that will be connected to me more. It's really two words, but I'll call it one. “Focus” is the one word - and the second one that is connected to it - “Intentional”. This one word idea comes from Jon Gordon (@jongordon11) and his book “One Word” (@GetOneWord) and Getoneword.com This has to be a day by day choice. Moment by moment, and I know I need to put the work in on this more than simply talking about it. The first connection to this episode comes from Essential Mastery (@EssentialMastry) where this thought was shared and got my attention: “The most valuable asset you own isn't money. It's the ability to think clearly in a world designed to confuse you. Mental clarity is wealth.” This is spot on for me as I've struggled with it throughout my life. A second connection to this episode comes from Dear Self (@Dearme2_) where this very simple post got my attention - “2026 will be different. No more repeated cycles. It's time to grow.” Again, my “focus” should be on the moment to moment, day to day, growth that I need to connect with; not just the entire new year. There is actually a third connection that I reposted just before this one from “Dear Self”. It comes from Your Best Version (@YourPrimePath) where this is shared: “Stick to the plan. Not your mood.” Way too often I let my mood dictate my thoughts and actions in particular moments. Even as I write this out and prepare to record, I'm catching my mind wanting to take me in other directions. It's awesome to be able to catch those moments and change the direction of my thoughts. Well, all I can say is it's great to connect with this as I look ahead to the new year. The year that I'll be turning 60. Thanks for listening. I found an awesome post from Jon Gordon (@JonGordon11) and it's a powerful and much needed reminder that all of us have the ability to be a leader in life. Find his site HERE. In case you have not noticed, the world needs us more than ever! He reminds us: “You are a leader!” You may not have a title. You may not have people report to you. Maybe you never thought of yourself as a leader. But I'm here to tell you that if you live a life of integrity… If you show others what discipline, consistency and devotion look like… If you encourage someone today… If people know you believe in them… If you lend someone a helping hand… If you lift someone up with your words… If you coach a friend through a challenging situation… If you solve a client's problem… If you guide a customer in the right direction… If you hold your friends accountable… If you get a child to eat their vegetables… If you love, serve and care…If you impact the life of another human being… You are a leader! Lead well! Lead Positive!” Such a powerful post with powerful examples for all of us. I shared this post with this thought: “Amazing truth here … many so-called / self-described “leaders” are out there needing to take lessons from real leaders, real people… integrity / character shine so brightly for those that “… love, serve and care…”! We need more of this!” It astounds me that we have so many people with titles that think they are leaders, yet they simply make things worse for others and certainly don't look to serve others. Once again, that's why we all have the ability to make a difference in this world. The funeral service I went to this past weekend… a 19 year old girl… was a difference maker on so many levels! Classic post from Jon Gordon (@JonGordon11) where he shared a “Mindset Monday” thought. “Replace “Have to” with “Get to.” Jon shares with us: “Shift your perspective and realize it's not about having to do anything. Life is not an obligation. It's a gift. Focus on gratitude and you'll find yourself feeling blessed instead of stressed.” This was something that I needed to connect with and remind myself how important my mindset is. Thanks for listening. I came across this post from Jon Gordon (@JonGordon11) where he shared this thought: “You won't always feel confident. But you can always be courageous and take action anyway.” This fit in exactly with a podcast from Sam Crowley - you can find this episode HERE. Sam was talking about going through a rough time a year ago when he was stuck and he pushed through so that he could clear things up and pivot into a new direction for his life. So much to pick up from others like Jon and Sam. Everyone goes through “stuff” and we can get though our “stuff” with the help of others and the reminders to be courageous. Thanks for listening. I found a great reminder for all of us when it comes to creating something special in our life and the fact that there are tons of distractions out there that we need to filter through. From Jon Gordon (@JonGordon11) he shares this thought from his book “The Carpenter” - “To create something special you have to care more about what you are creating than the distractions vying for your attention.” Well, seeing that there are tons of distractions for all of us in our world today - I wanted to get this out there so we can start to maybe find ways to focus on what we want more than we focus on those distractions. For me, it's always challenging, but I'm working toward getting better with this. How about you? Thanks for listening. In today's episode, Dr. Killeen shares a powerful lesson from The Coffee Bean by Jon Gordon and Damon West. Life—and dentistry—can feel like a pot of boiling water, full of stress and pressure. You can let it soften you like a carrot, harden you like an egg, or transform it like a coffee bean. Learn how to bring positive energy, leadership, and kindness into even the toughest situations, and discover how small choices can change the environment around you.
In this episode, we talk honestly about something so many of us feel but almost never say out loud: loneliness. It's crazy how life can look so full from the outside… so many people, so much activity… and yet on the inside, we feel completely empty. We've gotten really good at giving the illusion that everything's great, even when it's not. But that gap between what we show and what's actually real? It's exhausting! And it's taking a toll on so many of us. Loneliness can affect us mentally, spiritually, and even physically. But hear this: God never intended for you to walk through life by yourself. From the very beginning, He hardwired us for close friendships. Deep, honest, life-giving friendships. In this conversation, we talk about how to move past the surface, how to admit when we're lonely, and how to start pursuing the kind of real connection our souls are craving. 21 MUST FOLLOWS: Pastors Noah Herrin - @noahherrin Megan Fate Marshman - @meganfate Jonathon Pokluda - @jpokluda World Events Carlos Whittaker - @loswhit Sharon McMahon - @sharonsaysso Rich Villodas - @richvillodas Sharon Hodde Miller - @sharonhmiller Therapy/Knowing Yourself Jason VanRuler - @jason.vanruler Mike Foster - @mikefoster2000 Carl Lentz - @carllentz Goals and Outlook Carey Nieuwhof - @careynieuwhof Jon Acuff - @jonacuff Jon Gordon - @jongordon11 Ethan Bernard - @ethanbenard Nonprofits I love God behind bars - @godbehindbars IJM - @ijm Convoy of Hope - @convoyofhope Joy Jimmy Darts - @jimmydarts Cam Bynum - @cambeezy_24 Gabe Dannenbring - @gabedannenbring Style/Fashion Joe Burrow - @joeyb_9 Thanks to our amazing partners on this episode: International Justice Mission is a global nonprofit working to end slavery and violence around the world, taking special care of survivors from the moment they're rescued all the way through their healing and restoration. Is Your Team Truly Committed—Or Just Chasing Goals? What separates teams that succeed from those that just survive? It's not talent. It's not resources. It's commitment. This week, I sit down with my great friend Jon Gordon, and we got real about what it takes to build a team that doesn't just perform, but thrives under pressure. Jon's new book, The Seven Commitments of a Great Team, is more than theory—it's the roadmap every leader, entrepreneur, and family builder needs. We talked about why goals aren't enough. Everybody's got goals. But not everybody is committed. Jon broke it down beautifully—commitment is about action. It's about the daily disciplines that align with your vision. Want to make a million dollars this year? That won't happen without commitments to how you show up, how you serve, and how you lead your team. “Commitment is going to cost you something,” Jon said. “You have to ask yourself—what are you willing to give, and what are you willing to give up?” One of the biggest takeaways? The power of connection and love on a team. That might sound soft, but it's not. Love is what makes great teams fight for each other. It's what transforms a locker room, a boardroom, or a household. “You'll never have commitment without connection,” Jon said—and he's right. If your team's not committed to each other, they won't be committed to the mission. And when adversity hits, that's when the cracks show. We also touched on something every leader needs to hear: emotional fatigue. Carrying the weight of your business, your team, your family—it gets heavy. If you lose your why, you lose your fire. “The crime isn't that the passion ran out—it's that you stayed around after it did,” Jon shared. That line stopped me in my tracks. Leaders, you've got to reignite your mission or risk slowly fading out. Key Takeaways: The difference between having goals and living with commitment Why devotion—not discipline—creates lasting change How prayer and purposeful rituals can unlock creative breakthroughs The role of connection and love in high-performance teams How to lead through adversity without losing your energy or edge This one hit home for me on a personal level, and I know it will for you too. Go grab The Seven Commitments of a Great Team. It's a game-changer. MAX OUT.
