This book is one that I know I will be recommending to many people. As I continue to read Jon Gordon's latest book, “The 7 Commitments of a Great Team”, the lessons that are available for all of us remind me that I need to simply just work on getting better every single day. I hope, since you are listening to this podcast and probably others, that you want to keep improving too. In this final part 5 of 5 Ways to Stay Positive, this one is titled “Talk to yourself. Don't listen to yourself.” Remember there is the acronym of LIGHT for these 5 steps and this is the final one, the “T”. This is one of my favorites because I need this reminder every single day! Instead of letting my own negative & self-defeating voice direct my day, I need to talk to myself and be my own biggest encourager & cheerleader!! Since we are the thoughts that we think & believe, we might as well be thinking and believing our best!! I can't believe the negative ones, I need to connect with & live out the positive ones. Nobody is going to do this for me, I need to speak these into existence into my own life. Love these reminders of these 5 lessons. Thanks for listening. Leadership has evolved. It's no longer about titles or hierarchy—it's about trust, influence, and connection. That's why The Seven Commitments of a Great Team by Jon Gordon stands out. This book doesn't just inspire—it equips. It gives you a practical framework for leading people in a way that builds trust, clarity, and shared purpose, especially when teams feel stretched, disconnected, or uncertain about their direction. Leadership isn't confined to boardrooms or org charts. It's about how you treat people, how you handle pressure, and how you create an environment where others can thrive. Whether you're leading in business, your home, or your community—people deserve leadership rooted in character. That's what this book offers: usable, real-world insights for becoming the kind of leader others want to follow. Gordon starts with what matters most: trust. Without it, a group of people is just that—a group. Not a team. He lays out practical trust-building habits like weekly check-ins where team members share wins and challenges. These small moments become the foundation for deeper connection and accountability. Another critical takeaway is clarity. Misunderstandings, especially in hybrid or decentralized teams, can derail momentum fast. Gordon emphasizes that it's not just about having a vision—it's about repeating it, refining it, and helping people see how they fit into it. Clarity creates ownership. Then there's accountability, reframed in a way that's not about micromanagement—it's about commitment. He offers a tool I particularly like: personal commitment contracts. Simple, powerful, and effective. People don't just say what they're going to do—they put it in writing and own it. This book is short, sharp, and full of takeaways you can use immediately. Each chapter ends with actionable steps, making it easy to translate principles into behavior. That said, if your team is dealing with deep dysfunction or serious cultural issues, this book may feel like a starting point rather than a full solution. Still, it's a book I'd recommend to any leader—new or experienced—who wants to build a team that performs with purpose. The Seven Commitments of a Great Team gives you a language, a structure, and a mindset that's built for real life—not just the classroom. If leadership matters to you, this is one to keep close. This book is a good one. As I continue to read Jon Gordon's latest book, “The 7 Commitments of a Great Team”, the lessons that are available for all of us are powerful and life-changing. In part 4 of 5 Ways to Stay Positive, this one is titled “Have Faith.” Remember there is the acronym of LIGHT for these 5 steps and this one is the “H”. When it comes down to it, Faith helps us to connect with the idea that things are going to get better. Of course we need to understand that challenges will come along in life.. Many of them of course… but we also need to understand (and believe) that we will overcome them. Love this line from the book - “Trust that struggle leads to strength and setbacks lead to comebacks.” This is something that I need to work on for sure. John O'Leary (https://johnolearyinspires.com/) says it all the time, that we should believe that “the best is yet to come.” Thanks for listening. As I gladly continue to read Jon Gordon's latest book, “The 7 Commitments of a Great Team”, I am fired up about continuing to gather so many life lessons. In part 3 of 5 Ways to Stay Positive, this one is titled “Get To.” Remember there is the acronym of LIGHT for these 5 steps and this one is the “G”. This one is right to my heart as Jon reminds us about when we find ourselves complaining - which I still need to work on - we need to remind ourselves that we “get to” do things in our miracle of life, instead of “having to do” them. When we are able to focus on Gratitude, we can move from being selfish, frustrated, and stressed to more of an attitude of gratitude, appreciation and abundance. I love this reminder: “Research shows that you can't be stressed and thankful at the same time. If you are feeling grateful, you won't feel stressed.” He is 100% on target. I just need to do it a bit more often, every day!! I am working on it so it becomes more of a habit. Thanks for listening. As I continue to read Jon Gordon's new book, “The 7 Commitments of a Great Team”, I continue to pick up so many life lessons. In part 2 of 5 Ways to Stay Positive, this one is titled “Inside Out.” Remember there is the acronym of LIGHT for these 5 steps and this one is the “I”. Jon reminds us that the real truth and power of our lives comes from inside us, not from the outside world. I love this point that he brings up that as we create our life from the inside out, it's all about our spirit, our soul, our passion, and our power from within us. This is why it's always so important to keep working on ourselves, all throughout life! Keep improving, it's the way to go!! Thanks for listening. I just got started reading Jon Gordon's new book, “The 7 Commitments of a Great Team”, and it's got some powerful lessons in it. Since teams are always a part of life, and it's not just sports, I wanted to share these 5 parts of Staying Positive. Over the next five days I'll be sharing some of my thoughts from his book. He's all talking about “living LIGHT.” I'll explain what that means throughout this coming week. To start us off, part 1 is all about “Love instead of Fear”. He brings up a couple of great points. Jon reminds us that Love puts a shadow on fear and helps to get rid of it. Fears are out to weaken us, put limits on us and strikes doubt all around us. Remember, Love is a choice! Contrary to what some people think - love is a big-time strength, not a weakness like some people think. I feel bad for those people that think it's a weakness. Thanks for listening. At Redeemer, our pathway is how we seek to embody our vision and mission, or in other words, put it into practice. We desire every person to enter into intentional apprenticeship to Jesus, to be in a diverse, loving community, and to live in Wichita as witnesses. “The Church exists for nothing else but to draw men and women into Christ, to make them little Christs. If they are not doing that, all the cathedrals, clergy, missions, sermons, even the Bible itself, are simply a waste of time. God became man for no other purpose.” – CS Lewis At Redeemer, we take seriously Jesus' call to “Go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Apprenticeship to Jesus is not a one time decision, but a lifelong journey of following Jesus as our master-teacher. Since the goal of the Christian life is maturity in Jesus, apprenticeship must be deep and holistic, transforming the spiritual, physical, emotional, social, and vocational parts of men and women. Apprenticeship to Jesus is learning to practice the way of Jesus in our homes, relationships, neighborhoods, and jobs. We believe Christlikeness is cultivated as we implement spiritual practices, live in community with other believers, and submit to the Word and the Spirit. We agree with Dallas Willard who said, “that the gospel is opposed to earning, not effort.” As we move towards cultivating a life of loving God and people, we trust Christ will mature us into his likeness. https://redeemerwichita.church/
There’s no question that loneliness has become a global epidemic and is now being recognized as the invisible illness of our day and age. And the sad reality is that it’s always the undiagnosed illnesses that are the most dangerous and deadly. Dr. Mark Mayfield defines loneliness as: “The state of being unseen or unnoticed—relationally, emotionally, mentally, physically, or spiritually. It’s marked by a deep sense of hopelessness.” And loneliness is more than just a feeling. It’s a disease pathway, meaning as loneliness increases, so do levels of anxiety, depression, substance use, and even suicide risk. According to a Cigna survey of over 20,000 adults: 54% felt no one truly knew them, 43% said their relationships didn’t feel meaningful, and 36% said they didn’t feel like they had anyone to turn to. Again, that’s not just concerning—it’s a crisis. Because no matter who you are, where you're from, or what you've been through, you were designed to be connected. For this reason as we are nearing the end of Mental Health Awareness Month, we are bringing on a very special guest who is an expert in human connection and leadership - Jordan Montgomery. Jordan is a USA Today bestselling author, renowned performance coach, and keynote speaker, trusted by elite business executives, sales teams, professional athletes, and entrepreneurs. Known for his dynamic presence and transformative insights, Jordan has shared the stage with countless luminaries such as Jon Gordon, John Maxwell, Angela Duckworth, and many others. Additionally, he and his wife, Ashley, lead Montgomery Companies, a powerhouse team of nationally recognized speakers and coaches. Whether in the boardroom or on the sports field, their team excels at helping leaders and teams reach peak performance. Their impressive client roster includes Fortune 500 companies like John Deere, Northwestern Mutual, and Principal Financial, as well as elite athletes, Olympians, and Super Bowl champions. Welcome to The Jon Gordon Podcast! I'm Jon Gordon, and in today's episode, I want to have a real conversation with you about commitment—what it truly looks like, and why it changes everything. I've seen firsthand, through my own life and in the lives of those I love, what happens when we show up fully versus when we hold back. Today, I share a personal story about my mom's unwavering commitment and my own journey toward being a more committed husband, father, and leader. We often talk about how others fall short, but rarely do we turn the spotlight inward. The challenge I have for you is simple: focus on being the most committed person in the room—at work, at home, on your team. Commitment isn't easy. It comes at a cost, whether it's time, energy, or putting others before ourselves. But when we commit, we not only better ourselves, we uplift those around us. Is Your Team Truly Committed—Or Just Chasing Goals? What separates teams that succeed from those that just survive? It's not talent. It's not resources. It's commitment. This week, I sit down with my great friend Jon Gordon, and we got real about what it takes to build a team that doesn't just perform, but thrives under pressure. Jon's new book, The Seven Commitments of a Great Team, is more than theory—it's the roadmap every leader, entrepreneur, and family builder needs. We talked about why goals aren't enough. Everybody's got goals. But not everybody is committed. Jon broke it down beautifully—commitment is about action. It's about the daily disciplines that align with your vision. Want to make a million dollars this year? That won't happen without commitments to how you show up, how you serve, and how you lead your team. “Commitment is going to cost you something,” Jon said. “You have to ask yourself—what are you willing to give, and what are you willing to give up?” One of the biggest takeaways? The power of connection and love on a team. That might sound soft, but it's not. Love is what makes great teams fight for each other. It's what transforms a locker room, a boardroom, or a household. “You'll never have commitment without connection,” Jon said—and he's right. If your team's not committed to each other, they won't be committed to the mission. And when adversity hits, that's when the cracks show. We also touched on something every leader needs to hear: emotional fatigue. Carrying the weight of your business, your team, your family—it gets heavy. If you lose your why, you lose your fire. “The crime isn't that the passion ran out—it's that you stayed around after it did,” Jon shared. That line stopped me in my tracks. Leaders, you've got to reignite your mission or risk slowly fading out. Key Takeaways: The difference between having goals and living with commitment Why devotion—not discipline—creates lasting change How prayer and purposeful rituals can unlock creative breakthroughs The role of connection and love in high-performance teams How to lead through adversity without losing your energy or edge This one hit home for me on a personal level, and I know it will for you too. Go grab The Seven Commitments of a Great Team. It's a game-changer. MAX OUT.

I have to do what feels right.” “There's magic and transformation when you bring like-minded, passionate people together.” “When you try to appeal to everybody, you actually end up appealing to nobody.” “All those no's I got—some people say rejected—I just say redirected. I always thought, ‘Well, that's okay, that's one more no to get me closer to that yes.'” “What's meant for us will always come to us.” “Why would I get a job making minimum wage like my friends, when I can literally make $600 in a day doing my own business?” “Create a life that you don't want to escape from.” “No is actually one of the best things you can hear—and that is counterintuitive. The more no's you get, the closer you get to the right yeses—the people you need to be investing in and spending time with. What you don't want is that kind of half-hearted ‘Yeah, okay' from someone, and you end up investing a lot of time, and it ends up being a waste for you.” “Being resilient is definitely not bouncing back. It's choosing to move forward with courage so you can have a life filled with laughter and love and joy. And it's getting up again and being unstoppable.” “When you shift your mindset with gratitude, it is alchemy. It really gets you focused on what you can do instead of what you can't do. And it allows you to be in acceptance of where you are, who you are, and where you are on your journey.” “Grit when you're working hard is good, but grit without connection is resistance. It's clawing your way to the top. It's hitting roadblocks, or it's burnout. But grit with connection—that's where we really find resilience.” “When you have a why, you can get through any how.” “I focused on the fact that they said I had a chance. There's a 1% chance to save my leg. And so that's what I'm going to focus on.” “A good leader is a good listener. They have compassion. They're willing to share their struggles. They're willing to walk alongside their team.” BOOKS MENTIONED: The One Truth: Elevate Your Mind, Unlock Your Power, Heal Your Soul by Jon Gordon (https://a.co/d/5twkXz7) The Happy Hustle Version 2.0 by Cary Jack (https://a.co/d/3wgkRcw) The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Don Miguel Ruiz & Janet Mills (https://a.co/d/3fk3uHM) USEFUL RESOURCES: https://amberlylago.com/ https://amberlylago.com/podcast/ https://www.instagram.com/amberlylagomotivation https://www.linkedin.com/in/amberlylago/ https://www.facebook.com/amberly.lago/ https://x.com/AmberlyLago https://www.youtube.com/@AmberlyLagoMotivation The Pace of Pain - TEDxBerkeley (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3gEfdAcO_8) True Grit and Grace: Turning Tragedy into Triumph (https://a.co/d/gKdsjVp) Joy Through the Journey: Shift Your Mindset, Embrace the Present Moment, and Cultivate Resilience Through Life's Ups and Downs (https://a.co/d/gOiq4Sj) CONNECT WITH JOHN Website - https://iamjohnhulen.com Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/johnhulen Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/johnhulen X - https://x.com/johnhulen LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnhulen YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLX_NchE8lisC4NL2GciIWA EPISODE CREDITS Intro and Outro music provided by Jeff Scheetz - https://jeffscheetz.com/

In this episode of Recruiting Conversations, I'm breaking down one of the biggest pain points in recruiting: what do you say when a recruit isn't ready to move, and you're stuck between disappearing or sounding like “just checking in”? The answer: show up with value. Here's how to pivot from awkward follow-up calls to intentional touchpoints that build real trust—and how to do it without creating content from scratch. You'll learn how to become “the journalist,” how to lead with curiosity, and how to stand out in a sea of recruiters who are all saying the same thing. Episode Breakdown [00:00] Introduction – The core recruiting challenge: how to follow up without sounding like you're chasing. [01:00] The Mindset Shift – You're not a recruiter. You're a leader, mentor, and value-bringer. [01:30] Be the Journalist, Not the Story – Don't create content. Curate it and deliver it in a way that matters. [02:30] Tactical Delivery – Hooks matter: subject lines like “Today is my last day” grab attention. [03:00] Follow-Up Frequency – Every six months is a great checkpoint if you've made deposits of value. [03:30] Real-Life Example – Using AI and a recruit's actual data to build a 12-month roadmap in 15 minutes. [04:00] Physical Touchpoints – Send books, handwritten notes, and PDFs that matter (ex: One Word by Jon Gordon). [04:30] Passive Pursuit – Keep showing up with value, even when they're not ready. You'll be remembered when they are. [05:00] Final Challenge – Stop “checking in.” Start standing out. Use varied channels and intentional messaging to lead with value. Key Takeaways Be the Journalist – You don't need to create new content. Curate what's already out there and add your unique insight. Lead with a Hook – Use curiosity and tension to cut through the noise. Make them want to engage. Bring Real Value – A personalized roadmap or thoughtful book is more impactful than a generic check-in. Stay Consistent – Use varied channels (email, text, social, mail) and keep making deposits over time. Be Remembered, Not Forgotten – When you follow up the right way, you won't feel like an interruption—you'll feel like the obvious choice. Recruiting isn't about nudging people until they cave. It's about building a follow-up system that brings value, stands out, and creates connection over time. Want to elevate your follow-up strategy? Subscribe to my weekly email at 4crecruiting.com or book a coaching session at bookrichardnow.com. Let's build a recruiting experience worth remembering.

Saw a great post from yesterday that really fits every day! I need to keep things like this on my radar every day as many of the things that are out there on a daily basis are things that I don't want any part of. From Jon Gordon (@JonGordon11) - “#MindsetMonday Don't worry about tomorrow. Just win today. Then win the next day and the day after that. That's how you win the future. Day by day.” Some things happening all the time, every day are so many negative posts, attitudes, actions; full of anger, hate, looking to destroy rather than build up, etc. So for me, part of my having more “wins” each day, is first of all not letting all of this “crud” get in my way and that takes some work each and every day. Are you a carrot, egg, or a coffee bean? In this episode, we explore how adopting the right mindset can transform life's most daunting challenges into opportunities for growth, inspired by the engaging tale of the coffee bean by Jon Gordon and Damon West. The story shines a light on how we, like a coffee bean when immersed in boiling water, can change the environment around us rather than being changed by it.

This came about from a podcast I was listening to from Jon Gordon (@JonGordon11) where he interviewed Major League baseball player and manager, Clint Hurdle (@ClintHurdle13) and they had some great discussions that really connect to life and not just baseball. Listen to the podcast HERE. Powerful reminders about how our past can really help with our future, if we pay attention to it. This connects to something I really believe in and share all the time throughout my teaching, coaching and podcasting careers… “our past is our best mentor.” I'm fired up about this episode and I hope you check out these two great difference makers along with the podcast link too. We agree with Dallas Willard who said, “that the gospel is opposed to earning, not effort.” As we move towards cultivating a life of loving God and people, we trust Christ will mature us into his likeness. https://redeemerwichita.church/
I saw a recent post from Jon Gordon (@JonGordon11) where he reminds us about this important point we all need to connect with. It comes from his book “The Carpenter” where he shares this: “Invest in relationships not because you want something but because you want to build something!” This is something for all of us to go through life being focused on. Life is all about relationships and with those relationships that we invest in, doors open up to so many possibilities. Thanks for listening. How Your Greatest Challenges Can Shape Your Legacy What if the very messes you've faced in life—your mistakes, setbacks, and darkest moments—are actually your greatest qualifications to create impact and help others? In this episode, I reflect on this transformative idea with stories from some incredible guests: Jon Gordon, Jamie Kern Lima, Ryan Hawk, and Lewis Howes. Together, we explore what it truly means to harness the “power of one more” and use it to transform not only your life but the lives of those around you. I share intimate stories about my father's journey from addiction to becoming a quiet force of redemption for others. Jon opens up about being an imperfect parent and finding forgiveness in change. Jamie dives into how staying connected to your dreams fuels creativity, and Ryan and Lewis reveal how intention and belief shape real leadership. These conversations remind us that leadership isn't about being perfect; it's about showing up fully, embracing your story, and helping others see the greatness in themselves. You'll leave this episode with not just inspiration but actionable tools to live with deeper intention, break free from limiting beliefs, and understand how the ripple effect of your actions could create a legacy you'd be proud of. Key Takeaways: - Why your most difficult experiences might be your greatest tools for impact. - The “power of one more” mindset: how it creates momentum and transforms lives. - How to operate from imagination and dreams rather than memory and history. - The essence of leadership: crafting a vision big enough for others to find their dreams within it. - The importance of forgiving yourself and others to unlock deeper growth. No matter where you are in your journey, this episode will challenge you to embrace your imperfections and use them to create something extraordinary. For the first episode in our New Year's series, I asked one of the most positive people I know, Jon Gordon, to join us and talk about his “one word” concept.Jon is a best-selling author and keynote speaker who changed his life through changing his perspective (along with having a strong faith in Jesus). It turns out Jon isn't naturally positive at all!Not feeling super positive this New Year? Not great with setting (let alone keeping) your resolutions? Consider choosing a single word to focus on instead. Why? Jon says, “it provides clarity and focus. It gives meaning, mission, passion and purpose.”Protip: Be sure to listen to the end when Jon shares advice he wished he had gotten earlier in life (it's not what you think).Grab a copy of Jon's book: One Word Will Change Your LifeDownload the YouVersion app here.Purchase my FAVORITE book about goals here. Thanks to our amazing partners on this episode: International Justice Mission & Vern EideInternational Justice Mission is a global nonprofit working to end slavery and violence around the world, taking special care of survivors from the moment they're rescued all the way through their healing and restoration.
