Back in February 2022 I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Peter McCleave, founder of 10,000 Donors, a campaign to raise public awareness and promote sign up to the stem cell register. The more registered donors there are, the higher the likelihood is of a life-saving stem cell match being found for someone like Pete, who desperately needs it. Having absolutely smashed the 10,000 target (the benchmark has now been set at 100,000!) I wanted to catch up with Pete, to find out how he's been doing and to get the lowdown on Gob For Good. This is Pete's newest initiative building on all the great work of 10,000 Donors to date and focused specifically on boosting the numbers of black and ethnic minority stem cell donors, to ensure there is equitable access to stem cell technology and in finding a possible match. Pete and discussed: · What's been happening since we last spoke in 2022 · Publicity and promotion, including celebrity endorsements, NHS ConfedExpo, and zombies (!) · Living with blood cancer and how Pete has been feeling and coping, and also celebrating success · Newcastle University Centre for Cancer's research, and establishment of a CAR T-cell therapy programme – why donations are so urgently needed So, once again, please take a small amount of time out of your day to listen to this episode, SHARE this podcast and check out the 10,000 Donors and Gob For Good websites, to help raise awareness and support Pete in his mission. Welcome back to The Business of Healthcare Podcast. This week I have the pleasure of speaking with the inspirational Peter McCleave. For those of you who listen to the podcast regulary, you will have heard a segment in the episodes where I talk about an organisation called DKMS. DKMS are dedicated to getting as many people as possible on the blood stem cell registry. Today we hear about Pete's mission to help as many people as possible to find their genetic twin. Back in 2016 Pete was told that he had Myeloma and was given 7 years to live. Pete started https://www.10000donors.com/ to be doing something proactive not just to help himself but to help other people who are in a similar situation. "I believe every single one of us has a genetic twin somewhere in the world, if you can find your genetic twin and you happen to need a stem cell transplant, they can be donated to someone in need like myself and grow into healthy cells" If you can do one thing today it would be to listen to this this podcast, SHARE this podcast and check out www.10000donors.com to help support Pete McCleave in his quest to find his Blood Stem Cell Match. True stories told live across the UK. We’ve seen and heard a lot at Spark - stories that have made us laugh, cringe, cry, gasp, pause for thought, rethink everything. I’d thought we’d seen it all to be honest but in January this year, Peter McCleave took to the stage and asked us to save his life. That was a first. In 2016 Peter, a thirty nine year old triathlete and father of two, was diagnosed with a blood cancer called Myeloma and given seven years to live. Two years in, he now has five. But that doesn’t have to be the case. All Peter needs is someone who is a genetic match to donate their stem cells. In fact, that’s all most people in Peter’s situation need in order to survive. Trouble is around only two percent of the UK’s population is on the stem cell donation register. So Peter is on a mission to get that number up. Getting on the register is simple, pain free and could save someone’s life, so why not register today? To find out more visit: www.10000donors.comCan’t register but still want to help? Terenzo Bozzone was in the form of his life in early 2018, winning back to back 70.3's and breaking the course record at Ironman New Zealand, and was building his training towards Kona with the podium in his sights. Tragically, he was hit by a logging truck in July while out bike training, and thoughts of racing were put on hold while he tried to heal his body.Left with severe concussion, ongoing headaches, a broken cheek bone, facial plastic surgery, a broken hand and numerous other injuries, Terenzo focused on doing what he could each day, feeling grateful for the fact he was still alive, his kids and his family. What followed was one of the most remarkable stories of coming back from life threatening injuries ever told. Entering 70.3 Western Sydney on less than two weeks of run training, just with the aim of finishing the race, he surprised everyone - himself included - by taking the win! Inspired by that, he eight days later he entered Ironman Western Australia - and took the win after an epic battle with Cam Wurf on the run. This is a fantastic story of how a positive attitude, and gratitude for what we have each day, can transform the darkest of situations.Show Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. Our guest this week is Alex Yee who has been making a name for himself in triathlon, and athletics. Alex is frighteningly quick on the track and ran a PB of 27.51 to become British 10,000m Champion in May. What's even more remarkable is the fact that he focuses more on triathlon then running, and was recovering from a dreadful crash in 2017! He also hasn't yet turned 21!You'll hear:*Whether he is aiming for the 10,000m or triathlon or both at the Olympics in Tokyo in 2020*How he combines training for triathlon and running at the highest level*What Mo Farah said to him after his bike crash in 2017*What happened when he got a message from Macca to invite him to take part in Super LeagueShow Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. Simon Wegerif is a World leading expert on Heart Rate Variability, and how we can use HRV to make our training more effective. Rob saw Simon speak the TrainingPeaks Endurance Coaching Summit 2018, and took the opportunity to get him on the show to see what we can all learn about this relatively new science. In short, HRV gives us an insight into the TOTAL overall stress on our system in an easy to understand metric. As we’ve suspected for years, the science backs up the theory that training stress isn’t the only (or even, the main) source of stress on our bodies - and we find out how, by monitoring HRV, we can get more out of our limited training time. Most importantly, it may well give us information on how we can help avoid illness and injury!Show Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. Linsey Corbin went sub 9 hours (8.58:57) to finish 10th at the 2018 Ironman World Championships where she says conditions were "crazy fast." Remarkably it was her 12th time racing there! Linsey comes from a running background and her first Pro race in triathlon was in 2006. Two years later she came 5th at Kona and in 2011 she was 3rd at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships. She spent most of 2015 on the sidelines with a fractured femur and questioned if she would ever get back to the top. This is a fun interview, with some really good advice from Linsey. You'll hear:*The importance of racing your own race.*Why you don't have to "feel good to go good."*About the mental tactics she uses to get through a marathon when her legs are "battered" from mile one.*Why you WILL come back stronger mentally and physically from an injury*Linsey's views on periods and why having a regular one is a sign of good health*All about Bend, Oregon and why it is THE place to be!Helen also has a catch up with Laura Siddall after her recent guest appearance leading a strength and conditioning session at Knutsford Tri Club!Show Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. Mikael Eriksson recently won the M25 age group at 70.3 Portugal - in his first 70.3! He has made rapid improvements since completing his first sprint triathlon in early 2015. We hear about his progression in the sport, and learn about the kind of training that has taken him from swimming 2.20 per 100m when he started, to a sub 28 minute swim at 70.3 Portugal. We also learn about his bike training that took him to a 2.21 bike split (on a road bike!) when the winning pro did a 2.15. As well as being a competitive triathlete, Mikael is also a podcaster and triathlon coach. You find out more about him, and can hear his show That Triathlon Podcast, at his website www.scientifictriathlon.com.Show Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. On September 2nd 2013 Camilla Pedersen was in the form of her life. She had won the Ironman and Ironman 70.3 European titles earlier that summer and was preparing for the World Championships in Hawaii. The following day she was in an induced coma in hospital, following a crash during her final training ride in Denmark. She remained in a coma for 19 days. Doctors told her she would never walk again, let alone do a triathlon. Remarkably, just a year later, Camilla was crowned ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Champion. This interview goes way beyond swim-bike-run.!In this interview you’ll hear:The meaning of mental toughness taken to a whole new level.More about Camilla’s on-going recovery from a fractured skull in two places, a broken hip, collarbone and ribs.An important lesson in making sure YOU spend time doing what YOU loveWhy you should regularly train with people who will “kick your ass”About the time Camilla thought Rasmus Henning was a salesman!And...why Camilla’s English can sometimes be better than her DanishWe also have a short but inspiring interview with age grouper Peter McCleave, who was diagnosed with Myeloma just after completing Ironman Wales in 2016.
