We bring you a double interview this week!Simon GeorgeSimon George hit the headlines last weekend when he won the half distance Outlaw X event at Thoresby Hall. As a previous multiple winner and podium-placer at numerous Outlaw events, this might have been seen as 'business as usual' by many observers. What most people don't know though, is that the event marked a return to racing for Simon after a year of hell. Crashing on his bike and landing heavily on his head during early summer 2018, Simon was diagnosed with Post Concussion Syndrome. This had a huge impact on his life, his family and his work life, and he questioned whether he'd ever be able to train again, let alone compete. His story is one of courage and perseverance, and we're really happy we can share it with you. Michelle VesterbyMichelle Vesterby is well known for her bubbly personality and positive attitude towards not just racing, but life too - she's the one who usually out-smiles all of her competitors during a race! The Dane, who was 4th at Kona in 2015, found out that she was pregnant at the Ironman World Championships in 2018 and raced in Hawaii when she was 11 weeks pregnant. She gave birth to her son Markus in May 2019 and remarkably she was back racing long distance just three months later, at Ironman Copenhagen in August. Five weeks later she finished just off the podium in a shade over 9 hours at Ironman Italy. She was on fine form when we caught up with her the following morning. You'll hear:*All about the training she did during her pregnancy*The importance of listening to your body*Why she decided to race at Ironman Copenhagen, so soon after giving birth*How to get find extra energy when you're flagging on the run (hint. smile!)*A lot of laughter when she explains why she's on the look out for a babysitter in Kona! You can follow Michelle on Instagram @vesterbytri and find out more about her at her website www.michellevesterby.comShow Sponsors:http://team.oxygenaddict.com - You can download a free copy of the Team Oxygenaddict Race Review Document here: http://bit.ly/racereviewdocument If you feel you’ve not had the race you deserved or expected this weekend- Coach Rob has a couple of free skype consultation slots available this week, where you can talk through your results with him. Denmark’s Mathias Petersen went 7.52.31 to finish 3rd at Ironman Sweden in Kalmar - in his first attempt at the Iron distance! At only 24, Mathias had no expectations as he stepped up to the Ironman distance. Already twice Danish champion at 70.3 distance, all he really wanted to do was reach the finish line. We hear how his day played out, from a mind blowing 45 minute swim through a 4.16 on the bike, to his 2.47 marathon to round things out. He’s an amazing young talent that clearly has an incredible potential at the distance - if he can secure funding and sponsorship to help him keep racing after he finishes university. Imagine - the only sponsorship this record breaker has, is free shoes from Saucony !Show Sponsors:http://team.oxygenaddict.com - You can download a free copy of the Team Oxygenaddict Race Review Document here: http://bit.ly/racereviewdocument If you feel you’ve not had the race you deserved or expected this weekend- Coach Rob has a couple of free skype consultation slots available this week, where you can talk through your results with him. Simone Mitchell recently made a comeback from injury to win the British Middle Distance championships at Aberfeldy. A winner and course record breaker at the Outlaw in 2018 (finishing 4th overall, in 9.15) and having previously finished 2nd female at IM Lanzarote despite racing as an age grouper, she is stepping up to race Pro at Ironman Wales 2019. She talks to us about her long and rocky path back from injury, the importance of her relationship with her coach, how that has informed her own coaching, and what she's learned about herself and what inspires her on a day to day basis.Show Sponsors:http://team.oxygenaddict.com - You can download a free copy of the Team Oxygenaddict Race Review Document here: http://bit.ly/racereviewdocument If you feel you’ve not had the race you deserved or expected this weekend- Coach Rob has a couple of free skype consultation slots available this week, where you can talk through your results with him. This is his comeback season after a 3 year lay off from racing following the end of his ITU career, where he represented Slovakia. Anne Haug ran 2.55 - the fastest marathon of the day - to finish 3rd on her Kona debut in 2018. She also recorded a 1.14 half marathon to take the win at Dubai 70.3 in 2018, following her switch to 70.3 and Ironman racing after the Rio Olympics. You might already know Haug won won the WTS Grand Final in 2012 and has the same coach as Jan Frodeno... but you might not know that she taught herself to swim by watching You Tube videos, or that she was World Champion in a sport few people have heard of. Hydration SpecialThis week we have a special edition focusing on learning all about the importance of hydration, and especially the important role that electrolyte balance plays in staying hydrated. As we're going to find out, there's MUCH more to it than 'just drinking more water' when it's hot. We also learn why, in some hot conditions, drinking JUST water can actually be detrimental to our performance. We're joined by Andy Blow, ex-pro triathlete and founder of Precision Hydration. Andy suffered terribly with hydration related problems during his pro career, and it was only when he figured out the importance of balancing his electrolyte intake that he was able to have the same kind of success in hot races that he was having in cooler ones - that hydration / electrolyte balance was the key to his performances. With the weather across Europe this season being so unpredictable, we've seen LOTS of reports of athletes having their race ruined because of lack of knowledge of how to stay hydrated and in electrolyte balance when it's very hot. As we'll find out, it's a very individual challenge, and even our individual needs change depending on the conditions on the day.Andy has a wealth of knowledge, and by the end of this show, you'll have a much better understanding of what problems can be caused by dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, how you can learn about your own needs, and some 'hydration guardrails' that you can use in training and racing in differing temperatures.Show Sponsors:http://team.oxygenaddict.com - You can download a free copy of the Team Oxygenaddict Race Review Document here: http://bit.ly/racereviewdocument If you feel you’ve not had the race you deserved or expected this weekend- Coach Rob has a couple of free skype consultation slots available this week, where you can talk through your results with him. Sarah Piampiano just finished 2nd at Ironman Hamburg with another amazing run - a 2.56 on a really hot day, which was only a couple of minutes down on the fastest male run times. We got this interview in the can just before the race. She set Ironman Brazil on fire with her win in 2019, when she delivered a 4.43 bike backed by a 2.53 marathon. To put this in context, her marathon was faster than the men's winner, and only 2 male pro's ran faster! We hear all about her background - from an overworked banker putting in 100 hour weeks, sleeping under her desk and smoking 2 packs of cigarettes a day who entered her first triathlon as a bet! She talks honestly about the changes she's made over the last year to regain her love of the sport after feeling really burned out - we get some great insight into the nutritional changes she's made to stop 'restricting calories' and to start 'maximising nutritional value' from her food.As she says at the end of the interview - 'We only live once.' :)Show Sponsors:http://team.oxygenaddict.com - You can download a free copy of the Team Oxygenaddict Race Review Document here: http://bit.ly/racereviewdocument If you feel you’ve not had the race you deserved or expected this weekend- Coach Rob has a couple of free skype consultation slots available this week, where you can talk through your results with him. Katrina Rye has had a breakthrough year in 2019. She comfortably took the overall Age Group win by 15 minutes at Challenge Gran Canaria in April, finishing only 5 minutes behind Emma Pallant. She then decided to turn Pro and less two months later finished third at Staffordshire 70.3, qualifying for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in the process. Katrina talks about how she combines her training and racing while working as a physio for the British Army, she explains why she swapped hockey for triathlon and gives us a valuable insight into the value of strength and conditioning.Show Sponsors:http://team.oxygenaddict.com - You can download a free copy of the Team Oxygenaddict Race Review Document here: http://bit.ly/racereviewdocument If you feel you’ve not had the race you deserved or expected this weekend- Coach Rob has a couple of free skype consultation slots available this week, where you can talk through your results with him. Sam Laidlow won the Lakesman Iron-distance race in 8.21 - at 20 years old, in his first Ironman race! Or so we thought .... :) It turns out that he'd already won the Bearman Xtreme Iron distance race, when he was 18 years old - and he'd only entered that the day before! We catch up with this amazingly talented young athlete and hear about his upbringing, with his parents running a triathlon coaching camp and business in France. 'Ever since I was a young kid, all I've wanted was to win Kona,' he tells us. And with a 2.42 run in this event, who would bet against that happening sooner, rather than later?!You can read more about his family training camp business at www.sancture-sportifs.comShow Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. This week we bring you a bike fit special, with Matt Bottrill - British uber time trial legend turned bike coach to triathlon superstars.Matt has worked wonders with the bike position and speed of triathletes like Lucy Charles, Will Clarke, Susie Cheetham, Matt Hanson, and Tim Don. He also positioned Lotto Soudal cyclist Victor Campenaerts for his successful attempt on the hour record.Ever wonder - ‘How on earth do people go so fast on the bike? Is it all down to fitness, or is there more to it?’ We talk about all the things that you can do to go faster - other than training. Clothing. Body position. Helmet choice. Head position. Hand position. Specific drills to help you hold that new bike position. As we’ll find out, all these things have a MASSIVE effect on how fast your power will let you go - much more so than most athletes realise. It'll take time to adjust to a new position- 6-8 weeks in Matt's experience. But once you get there, you're going faster simply because of your equipment choices and body position, rather than 'just' the training you're doing. You can find out more about Matt and his services at https://www.mattbottrillperformancecoaching.com/Show Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. We've got an in-depth interview with an incredible athlete for you this week. Barkley Marathons finisher and two times Kona Qualifier John Kelly is on the show! John talks about becoming only the 15th person ever to finish the insanely tough Barkley Marathons, when he completed it on his third attempt in 2017. (As if that wasn't enough, the same year, he went on to finish 7th in his age group in Kona.) He also tells us about his Grand Round attempt - not only tackling the three classic British fell running challenges back to back...but cycling between them. This guy pushes limits to a whole new level.Show Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. We keep quiet and let young British professionals Sam Pictor and Sam Proctor do the talking and interview each other. The pair raced in the pro ranks for the first time in 2018, they each won an Outlaw Half and they both secured their first Ironman 70.3 podium finish, getting 2nd and 3rd at Weymouth 70.3. Proctor just made his debut at IM distance, finishing 8th in a stacked field at IM Texas in 8.14! If you've ever dreamt of racing pro then you'll love this interview as both Sams talk openly about the realities of trying to make a living from the sport.Show Sponsors:https://Thriva.co - Take health tracking to a new level with your personalised at-home finger-prick blood test. Holly Lawrence was the 2016 Ironman 70.3 World Champion, who continued her winning streak in 2017 with 6 more back to back wins over the 70.3 distance. A sore foot during the 2018 Oceanside race turned out to be a broken bone , which put her out for the whole rest of the year. She recently made her comeback, winning 70.3 in Dubai and Bahrain - the latter race being the first piece of the $1 million trifecta, if she can win the World Champs and Dubai again this year. She talks honestly about the mental challenges of dealing with 16 weeks in a cast while her foot healed, and reveals some of the lengths she went to to try to keep training - including swimming with her cast wrapped in plastic! She reveals how injury has been a great teacher for her, and how she’s prioritising more than ever the importance of down time, rest and recovery. Moreover, the time spent reflecting and worrying that her career might even be over has led her to approach this ‘second chance’ with a much lighter heart, and a focus on enjoying every minute. This conversation is really fun, and Holly’s love of training, and life in general, really come through!Show Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. Mike Phillips recently won Ironman New Zealand, a breathtaking race where he came off the bike 18 minutes down on Starky - but continued to push all the way to the line, making the pass with only a couple of miles left to go. We hear about his epic battle, how it feels to chase a rival for the whole day, and the changes he’s made to his training that helped him to run an amazing 2.40.05 marathon. We also hear how the race can be a lesson to all of us in never giving up - Mike had a mechanical on the bike that required him to stop at the roadside for several minutes, and crashed at high speed at the half way point on the bike, breaking his hand!Show Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. Jocelyn McCauley recently won Ironman New Zealand in 8.53, breaking the course record and closing out with a 2.58 marathon - pushing herself to the line despite having a 12 minute buffer at that point. In this interview, she explains why she kept pushing so hard - as an athlete and a person, she's on a constant quest for self-mastery.A former college track running star, Jocelyn got into triathlon after being a 'sherpa' for her sister at several events and loving the atmosphere there. She completed her first 70.3 only 11 weeks after giving birth to her daughter! In this interview, she also talks about her deep religious faith - explaining how she keeps Sundays as a total day of rest, free free both training and racing. This is a great conversation and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did!Show Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. Terenzo Bozzone was in the form of his life in early 2018, winning back to back 70.3's and breaking the course record at Ironman New Zealand, and was building his training towards Kona with the podium in his sights. Tragically, he was hit by a logging truck in July while out bike training, and thoughts of racing were put on hold while he tried to heal his body.Left with severe concussion, ongoing headaches, a broken cheek bone, facial plastic surgery, a broken hand and numerous other injuries, Terenzo focused on doing what he could each day, feeling grateful for the fact he was still alive, his kids and his family. What followed was one of the most remarkable stories of coming back from life threatening injuries ever told. Entering 70.3 Western Sydney on less than two weeks of run training, just with the aim of finishing the race, he surprised everyone - himself included - by taking the win! Inspired by that, he eight days later he entered Ironman Western Australia - and took the win after an epic battle with Cam Wurf on the run. This is a fantastic story of how a positive attitude, and gratitude for what we have each day, can transform the darkest of situations.Show Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. Simon Wegerif is a World leading expert on Heart Rate Variability, and how we can use HRV to make our training more effective. Rob saw Simon speak the TrainingPeaks Endurance Coaching Summit 2018, and took the opportunity to get him on the show to see what we can all learn about this relatively new science. In short, HRV gives us an insight into the TOTAL overall stress on our system in an easy to understand metric. As we’ve suspected for years, the science backs up the theory that training stress isn’t the only (or even, the main) source of stress on our bodies - and we find out how, by monitoring HRV, we can get more out of our limited training time. Most importantly, it may well give us information on how we can help avoid illness and injury!Show Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. Linsey Corbin went sub 9 hours (8.58:57) to finish 10th at the 2018 Ironman World Championships where she says conditions were "crazy fast." Remarkably it was her 12th time racing there! Linsey comes from a running background and her first Pro race in triathlon was in 2006. Two years later she came 5th at Kona and in 2011 she was 3rd at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships. She spent most of 2015 on the sidelines with a fractured femur and questioned if she would ever get back to the top. This is a fun interview, with some really good advice from Linsey. You'll hear:*The importance of racing your own race.*Why you don't have to "feel good to go good."*About the mental tactics she uses to get through a marathon when her legs are "battered" from mile one.*Why you WILL come back stronger mentally and physically from an injury*Linsey's views on periods and why having a regular one is a sign of good health*All about Bend, Oregon and why it is THE place to be!Helen also has a catch up with Laura Siddall after her recent guest appearance leading a strength and conditioning session at Knutsford Tri Club!Show Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. We also learn about his bike training that took him to a 2.21 bike split (on a road bike!) when the winning pro did a 2.15. As well as being a competitive triathlete, Mikael is also a podcaster and triathlon coach. You find out more about him, and can hear his show That Triathlon Podcast, at his website www.scientifictriathlon.com.Show Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. On September 2nd 2013 Camilla Pedersen was in the form of her life. She had won the Ironman and Ironman 70.3 European titles earlier that summer and was preparing for the World Championships in Hawaii. The following day she was in an induced coma in hospital, following a crash during her final training ride in Denmark. She remained in a coma for 19 days. Doctors told her she would never walk again, let alone do a triathlon. Remarkably, just a year later, Camilla was crowned ITU Long Distance Triathlon World Champion. This interview goes way beyond swim-bike-run.!In this interview you’ll hear:The meaning of mental toughness taken to a whole new level.More about Camilla’s on-going recovery from a fractured skull in two places, a broken hip, collarbone and ribs.An important lesson in making sure YOU spend time doing what YOU loveWhy you should regularly train with people who will “kick your ass”About the time Camilla thought Rasmus Henning was a salesman!And...why Camilla’s English can sometimes be better than her DanishWe also have a short but inspiring interview with age grouper Peter McCleave, who was diagnosed with Myeloma just after completing Ironman Wales in 2016. Liz Blatchford joins us on the podcast this week as she prepares to make her final appearance at the Ironman World Championships before she retires later this year. Liz has been competing in triathlons for 24 years having done her first race at the age of 14! She was born in the UK, grew up in Australia and raced for Australia as a junior, but switched to representing Great Britain when she was 21, with the hope of making the Olympics. Liz missed out on Beijing 2008 and London 2012, but says that helped her make the jump to long-course racing and on towards two podiums at Kona.In this episode, you'll hear first hand:*The harsh reality of missing out on two Olympics*Juggling being a mum and a full-time Ironman athlete.*The challenge of returning to racing after pregnancy. "When I was pregnant, I didn't run past 20 weeks and I questioned if I would be able to come back." Blatchford tells us.*Why she nearly quit the sport earlier this year "I couldn't walk without pain, I couldn't pick up my daughter and it really wasn't fun. I just thought I didn't need to do this," she says.*How she achieved what she thought was impossible - qualifying for Kona 2018. She tells us "In February I had no points and a sacral (lower back) stress fracture and I thought Kona qualification was "just impossible."*Her incredible achievement of winning Ironman Philippines on 7 or 8 weeks run training. "The first week of running was 1 minute on, 1 minute off for ten minutes and then 8 weeks on I was meant to be running an Ironman. That was a very daunting task!"*Her thoughts on the exciting women's field at Kona this year and why she thinks Lucy Charles is a future World Champion. In Coaches Couch this week, you’ll hear Rob talk about why an essential foundation of your training - and one of the pillars of the TIME Training System - is to be honest with yourself when EVALUATING your available training time. Sounds simple. Elliot Smales has dominated 70.3 racing in the UK this year, winning 70.3 Staffordshire, 70.3 Dun Laoghaire in Dublin (beating American Superstar Andy Potts) , and 70.3 Weymouth, and finishing a solid 4th in Edinburgh. We talk about his background, his success this year, and his experience racing at the World 70.3 Championships. He’s also refreshingly honest about his mindset to racing - we think you’ll be amazed to hear how even a triple 70.3 winning pro suffers from the same self doubt that we all experience!Elliot is sponsored by REAP bikes, HED wheels, HUUB wetsuits and Rotor powermeters (distributed by velotech. )Show Sponsors:Join the new Oxygenaddict Triathlon Community page on facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/666558563716897/https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. What if triathlons (or 70.3’s) weren’t as intimidating as they may appear? What if, as a successful long distance runner, you already possessed a unique advantage over athletes in the other disciplines? And what if, you could become a successful triathlete, or even just improve your running, without a significant increase in training hours by training more efficiently? Rob Wilby is a professional triathlon coach based in England, where he is head coach at both Team Oxygenaddict and Knutsford Triathlon Club. He specialises in helping age group triathletes rapidly improve, by focussing on maximising the effectiveness of training time and addressing their biggest performance limiters. Over the last 20 years, he has helped hundreds of athletes exceed their expectations, from completing their first triathlon through to qualifying for the World Championships. Rob provides great insight on the world of triathlons and 70.3’s and breaks down some perceived resistances that may prevent runners from entering these events. He’s a fellow podcaster and has wonderful tips on training, coaching and having a successful mindset to enjoy what may be a new experience for runners. If you’ve ever wanted to pursue a triathlon, but felt intimidated, Rob has great advice to help you get started. If you have never even considered triathlons, Rob’s training perspective can help you increase your running performance by leveraging cross-discipline training. So, almost I wondered how little training I could do and still be fit for racing.” “You need to build your ability to train before you can train.” “(Runners are) already aerobically very fit, and the reason they can’t swim quickly is because of a skill-based problem not because of a fitness based problem.” “The key to swimming better is to improve your technique. Practice good technique and get fit as a byproduct of simply practicing good technique rather than trying to get fit and thinking that your technique will improve.”
