This is a treat and such a privilege to have Emma Frodeno (formerly Snowsill), Nicola Spirig, Gwen Jorgensen, and Flora Duffy. . It's taken several months... but we are finally here. I'm so excited about this episode. You see, I've always wondered what it takes to win on that special day, that one day that every Olympic athlete aspires to. I've wondered what it must feel like crossing that finish line knowing that you are the Olympic champion, and how does that heavy medal affect the rest of your life? Well, today we'll get some answers to those questions... today I have the past four-woman Olympic Triathlon gold medalists on the show. Four Gold and one Silver between the four of them. These are women that I have trained and been at races with. They have all conquered the world and have been heroes to their respective countries. All of them I truly admire and would call good friends. All but one have been on the show and you can find their past episodes on your podcast app of choice. But never have they all been together on the one show. I'm feeling very honored that they have all agreed to come on, and amazed that we were able to coordinate times from all corners of the world. In this episode, they all discuss their mindset 2 weeks leading into the Games and how it changed leading into the race. When did they feel like they had it won. And, What was the first initial feeling you felt crossing the line, and finally How did the Gold medal affect each of their lives. Truly incredible to have them all on the one show... I can't thank them enough for making this happen. This is a great chat with triathlete Lisa Norden, a 3x Olympian from Sweden. She famously finished 2nd to Nicola Spirig in a sprint finish at London 2012. She's also a multiple National Time Trial Champion. She has battled years of injuries but has slowly built back up and came 5th on her debut at the Ironman World Championships in Kona in 2022. After two decades in triathlon, she believes there's still plenty to come over the long distance. You'll hear:10:30 Lisa talks about some of the wonderful women she has trained with over the two decades she has spent in the sport. 13:30 Lisa talks about her mum who has played a huge role in Lisa's life and did an Ironman back in 2004 and why she has spent so much time travelling and living in different places during her career. 19:30 Lisa talks about her coach Philipp Seipp, Laura Phillip's husband and his 90% fit, 110% fresh approach going into Kona. And why moving to his training method has saved her career. 23:30 On the horrible injuries she sustained and why it was a constant battle. 26:30 Patron Kay asks about how Lisa has dealt with her injuries. 30:30 Did Lisa ever think she would have to walk away from triathlon because of her injuries?32:30 That finish from London 2012 - what was it like for her? Does she have any recurring dreams?37:30 The impact Lisa has had on triathlon in Sweden.40:30 The Kona experience! Both in 2012 when she went for the first time on a training camp, and going back in 2022 to race. 44:30 Mid-life crisis and what lisa might do for her 40th birthday... her Mum took a 15/16 year old Lisa bike packing from Sweden to Italy!48:30 Does Lisa still do horseriding? That was the background she came from. 51:30 How is Lisa's cross country skiing? Especially now that her coach is Philipp Seipp. 53:30 Lisa's hopes for future Konas and she explains about the massive water bottle she picked up and threw over herself at one of the Aid Stations. After almost 30 years in the sport of Triathlon, Nicola Spirig completed her final rae this past weekend and we wanted to celebrate the incredible career of Nicola Spirig. In today's episode (recorded in November 2021), Greg is joined by his wife Laura, and they talk with Nicola about her career and pull apart specific races and moments. Nicola Spirig is a Swiss professional triathlete. She is a five-time Olympian, the 2012 Olympic, and six times European champion in women's triathlon. Nicola is married to fellow retired athlete Reto Hug, has three children, and during her athletic career completed a law degree. As the conversation kicks off, Greg asks Nicola to reflect on this past year in the sport. She has been training and her next large goal is to complete an IronMan race in under eight hours. Even if a goal sounds impossible, she says it's important to try, especially when the intention is to inspire others to follow their dreams. Nicola isn't an extrovert who loves being in front of others, but she does love working with young people and is glad her status as an Olympian has given her this platform. Going into the Tokyo Olympics, Nicola was ready. She was able to prepare without injury, compete in and win other good races like the European Championships, and beat some of her own personal best times. On race day, even though everyone had prepared for a hot day, it was raining, which for Nicola wasn't a problem and she placed sixth. Today, she says she's happy with her performance and wouldn't change anything even though she didn't get the medal she was aiming for. Nicola grew up with parents who were sports teachers and had the luxury of trying many different sports. For a long time, she didn't think of triathlon as a career, but rather as something she loved to do. She only considered herself a professional athlete for about two years, despite being involved in the sport for much longer. Her preparation around the London 2012 Olympics was nearly perfect and her at a professional level. She won the Olympic Gold medal just ahead of Lisa Norden, with their times being the same, and only a photograph was able to be used to separate their crossing the finish line. For the Rio Olympics, things were different. She was injured, the defending Olympic champion, and she'd had a baby in the years since her Olympic win. She took home the silver from that race and says the experience was much different than the London Olympics, but she was still very happy with her performance. She reminds listeners that while yes it takes a lot to get a medal in the Olympic games, it also takes a lot to finish fourth, sixth, or tenth. Laura and Greg then ask Nicola rapid-fire questions covering everything from TV and movies to household chores, to her taste in music. They wrap up the episode with Nicola sharing what her day-to-day life is like these days. Endurance News: TEAM EUROPE DEFEND COLLINS CUP WITH DOMINANT SHOWING IN BRATISLAVA, WINNING EIGHT OF 12 MATCHES Team Europe are once again Collins Cup winners. Normann Stadler and Natascha Badmann's team won eight of the 12 matches in an astonishing show of dominance to defend the title they won in 2021, when they won six of the 12 matches. Team Europe finished on 53 points, with Team Internationals second on 38 and Team USA coming third, having collected 22.5 points. Team Europe produced a dominant performance to defend the Collins Cup in Samorin, Bratislava. Normann Stadler and Natascha Badmann's team posted 53 points, as they won eight of the 12 matches. Team Internationals' four wins were enough for second on 38 points, while Team USA – who failed to win a match – finished third on 22.5 points. Inspired by golf's Ryder Cup, the Collins Cup sees three teams of 12 (six men and six women) racing for their team in a bid to win points. There were 12 match races which featured a 2km swim, 80km bike ride and 18km run. Collins Cup match-ups announced: Olympic medallists Blummenfelt and Wilde drawn togetherCollins Cup match-ups announced: Olympic medallists Blummenfelt and Wilde drawn together The three teams earned points depending on where their athlete finished in the race. Athletes could earn an extra half-point for their team for every two minutes they won by, up to a six-minute victory, which equates to 1.5 points. Amd Daniela Ryf set the tone early for Team Europe, with the reigning Ironman world champion dominating on the bike for Stadler and Badmann's team to begin the defence of their crown in emphatic fashion. Wins for Ashleigh Gentle and Paula Findlay for Team Internationals would keep Team Europe on their toes in matches 2 and 3, but captain's pick Nicola Spirig – gold medal-winner at London 2012 – showed her prowess on the bike to win match 4. Holly Lawrence and Anne Haug rounded off a consummate performance from Team Europe in the women's races, winning four matches to Team Internationals' two. Team USA failed to register a win. Kristian Blummenfelt continued European dominance in match seven. The reigning Olympic champion emerged from the swim third, but showed his mettle on the bike to beat Team Internationals' Hayden Wilde into second. The Team USA competitor Ben Kanute took third. Sam Laidlow broke Europe's run of finishing in either first or second spot in match eight, with Team Internationals' Lionel Sanders beating Sam Long to the line. Laidlow would finish alongside match 11 winner Gustav Iden. However, Team Europe picked up wins in matches 9 (Magnus Ditlev), 11 (Gustav Iden) and 12 (Daniel Baekkegard) to ensure that Team Europe defended the crown they won last year. Match 10 was won by Team Internationals' Aaron Royle, meaning Team USA finished the event with no wins. What's New in the 303: Familiar faces take home wins at Leadville Trail 100 Previous champions Clare Gallagher and Adrian Macdonald take home their second wins at The Race Across the Sky. On Saturday morning, the most famous 100-mile trail race, The Leadville Trail 100 (The Race Across the Sky), kicked off in Leadville, Colo., as runners made their way through 4,800m of elevation gain in the Rocky Mountains. Previous champions Clare Gallagher (2016) and Adrian Macdonald (2021) both earned their second Leadville titles, taking the win by a margin of two hours. Adrian Macdonald of Fort Collins, Colo., wins the back-to-back titles at the Leadville 100. Photo: Leadville Race Series This race has been a staple of the ultrarunning community since its inception in 1983. The extreme elevation and high altitude are the biggest challenges athletes face as they make their way through the Rocky Mountains. The women's race When Gallagher won in 2016, she flirted with the course record of 18:06:24 (1994) for the first 50 miles. This year, Gallagher went out more conservatively, racing with Addie Bracy until the 50-mile mark. Bracy, a three-time USATF Trail National Champion, created a six-minute gap on a Gallagher, but she managed to gain back time on Bracy in the second half. By the 60-mile mark, Gallagher managed to fight her way back to the front, while Bracy dropped out of the race, leaving Gallagher with a considerable lead over the field, which she held until the end. Gallagher, from Boulder, Colo., was the first woman to cross the finish line in 19:37:57, only 37 minutes slower than her winning time in 2016. Alisyn Hummelberg of Corona del Mar, Calif. and Lindsey Herman of Albuquerque, N.M., came across the line for second and third, two hours after Gallagher finished. Macdonald remained composed early on, mixing things up with a pack of 10 runners until the mile 25 mark. A small gap at the front began to emerge over the next few miles as Macdonald set the pace. By the halfway mark, he established a 15-minute lead over the second-place runner. Heading into this year's race, Macdonald was destined to repeat as the men's champion. Last year, he won dominantly in only his first 100-mile race. The Fort Collins, Colo., native continued to extend his lead over the final 50 miles, coming to the finish line in 16:05:44, beating his 2021 winning time by 13 minutes. Macdonald crossed the finish line more than two hours before JP Giblin of Scotland and Ryan Kaiser of Bend, Ore., came across for second and third, respectively. Dean and Paula discuss the format and the results of the Pho3nix Sub 7/Sub 8 triathlon between Kristian Blummenfelt, Joe Skipper, Nicola Spirig, and Kat Matthews. In this episode, they also discuss: The Jack and Jill marathon Run for Foxy Roxie 5K The Prefontaine Classic Garmin's Forerunner 955 Solar Giro d'Italia Fantasy Tour de France Hospital Hill Half Marathon RyR is a team of runners and triathletes who receive comprehensive and customized coaching. The team name has dual meanings. The first is based in Hebrews 12:1 in which Christians are instructed to run the race set before us. In this context, RyR stands for Run your Race, with an emphasis on meeting you (the athlete) where you are and coming alongside you to help you reach your goals. The verse emphasizes patience, endurance, and perseverance. These qualities are essential for success as both athletes and coaches. The second meaning is based on the enduring friendship and marriage between the founding coaches, Dean and Paula Roberts. In this context, RyR stands for Roberts and Roberts. While our primary mission is to help athletes set and reach fitness and performance goals, we understand that this must occur within the context of each athlete's daily life. We strive to form an individual relationship with each athlete and make sure weekly training fits seamlessly into family life and work schedules.

Endurance News: Alistair Brownlee is out of the Pho3nix Sub7 Attempt due to injury! Joe Skipper joins Kristian Blummenfelt, Katrina Matthews and Nicola Spirig who will attempt to defy the impossible and break 7 hours and 8 hours for men and women respectively over the full distance. Joe's mentality is that no one, not even the dominant Norwegians and Kristian Blummenfelt is unbeatable. Dual Olympic champion and Sub7 aspirant Alistair Brownlee has been ruled out of the Pho3nix Sub7Sub8 Project, powered by Zwift due to a stress response in his hip that requires immediate treatment. Brownlee will be replaced by fellow Brit and PTO world number six Joe Skipper who takes his shot at making history against reigning Olympic and World Champion Kristian Blummenfelt on Sunday at the DEKRA Lausitzring in Senftenberg, Germany. It is a cruel blow for Brownlee, who along with MANA Group CEO and Pho3nix Foundation board member Chris McCormack was part of the initial team that developed the concept of delivering the first sub-7 hour full distance triathlon in late 2019. “We are extremely disappointed with the announcement, but when you are pushing your body to the limit like Alistair has been, it's a fine line,” said McCormack. ‘Alistair is a true professional and will be there to support Joe, who has been preparing for Ironman Nice at the end of June, so in good shape to take on the challenge.'' ‘It's not going to get easier with Joe', said Blummenfelt. ‘He has a better full distance resume and a higher world ranking than Alistair. I'm looking forward to the challenge.' “Honestly, I'm devastated, said Brownlee. ‘I was frustrated to miss St George, and now this. I'm gutted. I was so invested in the process and loved working with my team. This was the goal that stimulated me again in the sport, on par with the Olympics. I'll do what I can to support Joe.” Brownlee, who also missed the recent Ironman World Championships in Utah, will support Skipper by pacing him in the swim, and will also join the commentary team for the live broadcast on Sub7Sub8.com. Brownlee replaces Richard Varga on Skipper's team, with Jonny Brownlee also dropping out to be replaced by German national marathon champion Frank Schauer. Skipper retains the support of the bike pacemaking team led by Alex Dowsett, who is fresh off riding in the Giro d'Italia. Ironman Des Moines Course Swim This unique 2-loop swim course will take athletes counterclockwise in popular Grays Lake. Starting at the boat ramp, athletes will make their way to the bridge where spectators can get an up-close look at their athlete. Before starting lap 2, athletes will get out of the water, cross the peninsula and head back in the water. This 2-loop, spectator friendly swim course is a great way to kick off your race day. Bike The rolling hills of this 1-loop bike course will take athletes through some of Iowa's best sights. Athletes will head west through beautiful West Des Moines before hitting the rolling hills of Dallas County and famous bridges of Madison County. In the heart of the course, athletes will ride through Winterset, the birthplace of John Wayne, before heading back north to Des Moines. May the wind be at your back and sun on your face. 4079 ft of elevation gain. Run Athletes can expect an entertainment packed; 3-loop run course. After exiting T2, athletes will run around Grays Lake before heading downtown to the spectator packed Locust St where local restaurants, bars and parks will give the athletes tons of energy for their final leg of the race. Finish line will once again be in the heart of the entertainment district of downtown Des Moines: Court Ave. Music, lights, and the cheers of the crowd will give the athletes that final burst of adrenaline they crave. Be sure to soak in the beautiful Iowa summer night. Kat Matthews Rises to the SUB8 Challenge Sydney, Australia – 13th April, 2022 /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ –European champion Kat Matthews has signed on to the Pho3nix Sub8 Project, Powered by Zwift. The third-fastest British female long-distance triathlete and national time trial cycling champion is the newest contender for the audacious attempt to race the full distance of triathlon in under eight hours. After Ironman 70.3 world champion Lucy Charles-Barclay was ruled out of Sub8 due to a hip bone fracture, Matthews was quick to rise to the occasion and take on the challenge of swimming 3.8 kilometers, cycling 180 kilometers, and running 42 kilometers faster than anyone ever before. Though the attempt will be aided by a team of pacemakers and cutting-edge technology and logistics, in the end it will still be a triumph of physiological preparedness and mental acuity for any athlete to go under the mark. “I'm a relative newbie to the sport and the iron distance is certainly one where experience is of high benefit. Most would assume I would not be a contender and that achieving this would be impossible,” Matthews admits. “However, as soon as I heard of the attempt, I wanted to be involved. It sparked my interest intellectually as well as physically. I see my sporting endeavours as a case study for constant learning and improvement. I have yet to find a plateau in my physical improvement in any area, and this evolution keeps me right at the edge of passion and motivation for absolute excellence.” As an Army physiotherapist, Matthews pursued a longtime interest in the human body and health helping injured soldiers get back to fighting fitness. It was in that environment she began exploring triathlon, going from grassroots sprints to winning middle distance races outright as an amateur to earn her pro card. With a slew of wins and notable performances in the past three years including winning Ironman Florida to set the third-fastest full distance time set by a British female, topping Ironman UK, and dominating this year's Ironman 70.3 Lanzarote, Matthews has put the world on notice. Now only seven years after she first began doing triathlons, she puts herself on an even steeper trajectory to sporting greatness lining up to race against dual Olympic medallist Nicola Spirig. Matthews says, “Nicola's accolades in the sport over the last 25 years puts her as a legitimate candidate as the sport's Greatest Of All Time across both male and female athletes. To race against Nicola here is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I hope to be a worthy contender.” Pho3nix Foundation board member and MANA Global CEO Chris McCormack says, “Kat is a world-class athlete I've watched with much interest over the past few years. Getting herself and her ‘tribe' of pacemakers together in such a short time frame is no mean feat, but she came ready and prepared. Kat has had a long-term alignment with the Sub8 Project: she was in early discussions with Lucy as part of her team and has also been engaged in a heavy training block with many of the pacemakers over the past six months. This made for a perfect transition into the lead racing role. By Brian Weiss, Bike Law Colorado Finally, the much sought after common sense traffic law for bicyclists is coming to Colorado in 2022, likely July 1st. After the Governor Polis signs the law and the Safety Stop becomes effective, anyone who rides a bicycle or scooter on public roads will not have to lose momentum due to stop signs or wait as long at red lights. So what difference will the Colorado Safety Stop make? Soon riders will “legally” not have to completely stop at stop signs when there is no traffic present. Red lights that would not change for a bike rider who followed the law and as a result the rider waited and waited – will be a past memory. People who were pulled over by police and ticketed for what they may have thought was a legal activity on a bicycle, can now breathe a sigh of relief. Jack Todd (Bicycle Colorado) Andy Kerr, Senator Kevin Priola, Piep van Heuven (Bicycle Colorado), Brian Weiss After about seven years of trying, Colorado's House and Senate finally passed the State-wide Safety Stop bill (HB22-1028), which is based on the Idaho Stop Law, in 2022. The bill actually had true bipartisan support this year. In fact, it passed the Colorado House 44-20 and passed the Colorado Senate 25-8. The effective date of this law taking effect will be after the Governor signs it and the required waiting period because the new law is needed for our “immediate safety.” An explanation of the practical changes of the Colorado Safety Stop for a bike rider are as follows: When approaching a stop sign, if it is safe to proceed only after slowing to a reasonable speed of 10 miles per hour or less, yielding the right-of-way to any traffic or pedestrian in or approaching the intersection, and after yielding, then the bike riders can continue through the intersection without stopping; and When approaching an illuminated red traffic control signal or “red light,” the person on a bicycle must first stop completely at the intersection and yield to all other traffic and pedestrians and only when traffic clears and it is safe, may the rider proceed straight or make a right turn through the intersection or, subject to specified conditions, make a left turn onto a one-way street only. It should be noted that the bill evolved into the current version in several steps. This law will not only apply to people who ride bicycles but is now flexible enough to cover current and future forms of transportation called “Low Speed Conveyances” which would include electric scooters, one-wheels, e-bikes, and electric skateboards. Also there were several parts added to the text of the bill. One critical revision is that the new law will only apply to bicyclists age 15 and over. However, for bicyclists, or low speed conveyance riders, under age 15 who are with a parent or legal guardian they can also keep their momentum and benefit from this new law. This is a change from the current law which was basically an opt-in decision by the city or county to make a Safety Stop the rule of that area. As expected, when rules for bike riders changed from town to town there was confusion. When both bike riders and drivers of motor vehicles understand the laws, they are easier to follow and there is less conflict between road users. I say that this law was a long time coming from a personal note, as I have advocated for the Idaho Stop for over 8 years for Bike Law, Team Evergreen Cycling and myself as a person who bikes all over Colorado. While I knew that some mountain towns, like Breckenridge, Aspen, and Summit County, had a successful safety stop local ordinance in place for years before the Colorado Legislature considered changing the Traffic Code to make this a statewide law, I also was aware of the Denver Mayor's Bicycle Advisory Committee in 2013 which shared a white paper explaining how traffic flows and bicycle commuters would benefit from a safety stop ordinance in Denver. I testified at the Senate Committee hearings for two years, but the bill did not leave the Transportation Committee. However, there was a glimmer of hope in 2018 for passing a version of the Idaho Stop Law. In 2018 there were enough votes in the Colorado Legislature to pass a watered-down model of the bill which allowed the bike-friendly cities and counties to “opt-in” to a regulatory framework to allow bicycles more freedom at intersections, but I saw this as a weak compromise law. Fortunately, it did serve as a step toward the larger objective, and it energized the bicycling community to keep trying. In the meantime, Colorado was bypassed by other states. Arkansas, Delaware, Oregon Washington, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Utah all passed statewide safety stop laws. Those other states provided data that was helpful in ultimately passing Colorado's safety stop bill. For example, I explained to the Colorado Senate transportation Committee that crashes between bicycle riders and motor vehicles dropped 23% at intersections with stop signs over a 30-month period in Delaware. I find that statistics like this resonate well with both legislators and jurors alike. The lack of relevant statistics from other states may have been a reason that the law passing in Colorado was previously unsuccessful. While working to pass the Colorado Safety Stop, there were a lot of different people involved with varying viewpoints. Of course, Bicycle Colorado was a driving force behind this law as it benefits bicycle riders across the State. Andy Kerr, current Jefferson County Commissioner, former Colorado State Senator, and former Colorado State House of Representatives stewarded this bill for about 8 years and made it his personal mission when he was a Colorado legislator. Note, Andy commuted by bicycle when he was the Colorado State Senator and House Member for my district. After I gave my own testimony about statistics, safety, and legal issues, I was moved by the testimony from fellow cyclists. In particular, I recall Marcus Robinson's testimony who explained that he, as a black man riding an expensive road bicycle, was emotionally devasted after he was pulled over by the police who claimed he failed to come to a complete stop at a stop sign and the police accused him of stealing the bicycle that he was riding. Marcus explained that no minority should be targeted by law enforcement, and he advocated for equality in cycling. I learned that after the stressful police accusation and racial unrest in 2020, Marcus Robinson and Neal Henderson started Ride for Racial Justice, a non-profit in Denver which advocates for Diversity, Education, Leadership & Community: https://www.rideforracialjustice.org/our-vision. This Safety Stop bill will unify bike laws across Colorado, and make the roads safer for people of color at the same time. With Kat's cerebral and disciplined approach to the sport I'm excited to see how she will tackle the puzzle that is Sub8 and the new race strategy she will bring in her pursuit to be the first to Defy the Impossible.” Regarding Charles-Barclay's further role, McCormack clarifies, “Lucy is still very much part of the team and having her still on board within our global commentary team and on the ground on race day brings a new lens to this groundbreaking attempt. Her journey in preparation and the insights she can offer on her fellow athletes racing will take our coverage to the next level. Podcast: The Greg Bennett Show Episode: Nicola Spirig Welcome to The Greg Bennett show, a Bennett Endurance podcast hosted by Former Professional Olympic Athlete Greg Bennett. Greg chats with the world's greatest athletes and high performers to find out how they got to the top of the world and how they are able to sustain it. In today's episode, he is joined by his wife Laura, and they hear from Nicola Spirig. Going into this year's Tokyo Olympics, Nicola was ready. She won that triathlon just ahead of Lisa Norden, with their times being the same, and only a photograph was able to be used to separate their crossing the finish line. Then they wrap up the episode with Nicola sharing what her day-to-day life is like these days. Find show notes, discount codes, and more here. In this episode of the Podcast Gain³, I talk to Belinda Granger, who is the Liaison for all the professionals at Challenge Family and former pro-triathlete herself, about her path as a professional and what she learned from it. After being a P.E.-Teacher, she decided to fully focus on the sport after winning Challenge Roth. She then trained under Brett Sutton in Switzerland, with the likes of Nicola Spirig. In the process she won many international 70.3 races and Ironmans. After retirement, she stayed true to the sport and is now the Pro-Liaison at Challenge Family. In the podcast, we talked about her career, what she learned from it when the right time is to make the switch to full-time professional and which challenges she faced after committing that step. 2016 Olympic triathlon champion Gwen Jorgensen joins us this week. Gwen was happy working as an accountant when USA Triathlon persuaded her to join their set up in 2010. A year on and she had qualified for the London Olympics. By 2014 she was dominant and she stormed to gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Then she walked away from the sport to have a family and then announced her new goals, to win gold at the Tokyo Olympics in the marathon. You'll hear 07:46 we talk about motivation. One of the biggest talents is having internal drive and motivation. "The easy runs are sometimes the hard ones" 13:25 Her main goal this year is the Olympic trials "I'm excited and I'm in a good place. Since doing running and switching from marathon to track, I've been extremely inconsistent, but I feel I had that in triathlon too it's not easy to deal with inconsistencies, but I can see improvements" 18:26 Have the last 5 years been the hardest as an elite sports person? "In triathlon, everyone thinks that I won everything, but at the beginning of my career I lost a lot. It's always enjoyable when you win and when you are struggling, it's hard, but I am loving running" 20.30 Shifting goals 24:20 Does she see her Tokyo marathon goal as a failure? "The marathon is still the end goal and I want to come back to it after track." 26:35 Her time as a swimmer and why she has learned not to get wrapped up in her results. "At the end of the day, if I perform bad, it doesn't mean I'm worth anything less." 31:35 What was the conversation she had with Nicola Spirig on the run at the Rio Olympics? What were they saying to each other? 34:50 On motherhood and balance. 40:03 We talk periods 47:03 Have you ever regretted retiring from triathlon? I miss winning, everyone likes winning 53:15 What did she make of Beth Potter's performance 59:50 The art of eatcations Find out more about this week's guests Gwen Jorgensen https://www.instagram.com/gwenjorgensen/ (Instagram) Gwen Jorgensen https://direct.me/gwenjorgensen (useful links) Like what you heard? Jeder Mensch braucht unterschiedlich viel Schlaf. Welche Faktoren aber immer eine Rolle für eine erholsame Nacht spielen, erzählt Nicola Spirig in dieser Folge.

Endurance News: Chris Leiferman Wins IM Florida, Coloradans Hanson and Long 2nd and 3rd Colorado was well represented at IRONMAN Florida on Saturday. As the world was learning who our next President was going to be, quite a race in Panama City was unfolding. In the end, it was close, but Boulder’s Chris Leiferman out dueled Matt Hanson (who recently moved to Castle Rock) and Sam Long. Long led about 2/3 of the way through but fell back and Leiferman came off the bike in the lead a minute ahead of Germany’s Andreas Dietz and six minutes ahead of Long and 10 minutes in front of Hanson. Leiferman then led the rest of the race but both Hanson and Long significantly closed the gap on the run. Hanson cut nearly 8 minutes into the lead with Long just 29 seconds behind Hanson. Said Leiferman, “yeah, they were catching up to me, but I’m glad it wasn’t a run race and I had the swim and bike to keep the lead. I have had the worse run build up this year, so knowing where I can go for future races.” Leiferman finished in 7:52:44, Hanson in 7:55:02 and Long came in third with a 7:55:33. Long became the youngest American to ever finish under eight hours in an IRONMAN. Chris Nikic - First Down Syndrome Athlete to Complete an Ironman A lot of people needed a really good story this year, and 21-year-old Chris Nikic delivered just that on Saturday, when he became the first person with Down syndrome to finish an Ironman. Racing alongside his coach and guide, Dan Grieb (a 16-time Ironman finisher), Nikic overcame high surf, a crash on the bike, and muggy conditions on the run to finish with just 14 minutes left to spare before the 17-hour cutoff. “The run was really awesome because of all the people cheering for me,” Nikic said. “And when I got to the end, I just started running faster because of all the people cheering. I was so excited to hear them say, ‘You are an Ironman.’” According to Grieb, Nikic had a spill on the bike while going downhill at about 19 mph. His knees were pretty scuffed up, but the thought of not getting back on the bike never crossed his mind. “We engage in a lot of banter on the course to keep him going,” Grieb said. “At one point he said the S-word, and that turned into a four-hour conversation. That back and forth banter is how we get through the tough spots, like riding up a hill or a crash.” Like most first-time Ironman finishers, Nikic is left with some blisters on his ankles and feet, but said he otherwise felt pretty good when he woke up the following morning. Don’t expect him to be the one-and-done Ironman type, either. He already has his sights set on the Ironman World Championship next October, as well as continuing his work as a public speaker. It’s a story people are clearly eager to follow. Over the course of the weekend, 30,000 people tuned in live to watch Ironman’s Facebook coverage of his finish—and Nikic went from 20,000 to 74,000 followers on Instagram. You can continue to follow Nikic’s journey at @chrisnikic. World Cup Valencia Women's Results and Men's Results. I watched the race on TriathlonLIVE.tv. Olympic Gold medalist Nicola Spirig comes in close second behind Beth Potter from Great Britain. After winning Olympic gold at London 2012 in a thrilling finale, Spirig then came second to Gwen Jorgensen at Rio 2016, making her the most successful female Olympic triathlete. Vincent Luis (French) bested Alistair Brownlee by 3 seconds. Brownlee is Olympic champion in both London 2012 and Rio 2016. Gustav Iden came in 7th. Kristian Blummenfelt was having calf issues prior to the race. Kristian posted - After struggling with a bad lower left leg for the last three weeks, I wasn’t really sure what I could expect yesterday. Was in a solid form on the swim and bike, but the leg snapped again early on the run and ended up with a DNF. With only a month left until the big day in @challengedaytona I need recover quickly to have a chance over there What's New in the 303: Cyclocross Race in Castle Rock, Another All-Star Showing. Castle Rock—Once again the women open featured an all star cast with Katie Compton leading the way at the US Open cyclocross race in Castle Rock. Strong community that had a nice day to remember why we love this sport, place and most importantly each other.” The race this Saturday originally scheduled for Westminster may be moved to Parker due to increased COVID restrictions. Lance Panigutti from Without Limits is still waiting for the official word from Tri-County health about moving the race. Tom Miller, Endurance Cyclist Extraordinaire, Lucky to be Alive–His Story Throughout the summer of 2020, Tom Miller had noticed something wasn’t right with riding. He rides bikes–a lot, like over 10,000 miles per year. As a member of the Rocky Mountain Cycling Club (RMCC) he participates in their triple crown quest–three major rides such as Denver to Aspen in one day. He rides a lot indoors and tracks every pedal stroke and every heart beat. He knows his body and expected performance well. He is in shape. He played college football. He understands fatigue and training so what was happening these past couple of months was bizarre. Endurance News: Ironman Florida Valencia gears up for final World Cup of 2020 The unpredictable 2020 World Triathlon season comes to a close on Saturday in the city of Valencia when the final sprint-distance World Cup of the year takes to Spain’s east coast. This may only be the fourth World Cup able to be held in the past ten months, but the standard of racing has been incredible with world number ones, Olympic Champions and legends of the sport taking the precious opportunities to gather on the blue carpet. This weekend promises to follow suit, with World Champion Vincent Luis wearing the number one in a men’s race that includes the likes of Alistair Brownlee, Henri Schoeman and Gustav Iden. Switzerland’s double Olympic medallist Nicola Spirig will be one to watch in a wide-open women’s race and on a pan-flat course where Lisa Tertsch and Verena Steinhauser could challenge. The race starts with a 750m, one lap swim of Valencia Marina, transitioning into a 4-lap, 20km bike around the edge of the harbour. The 5km run follows exactly the same route for just one circuit and you can watch all the action as it unfolds on TriathlonLIVE.tv. Women’s Race Saturday 7 November, 2.15pm CET First to line up will be the elite women, led by Verena Steinhauser. The Italian has been in sparkling form with a top 10 in Karlovy Vary followed by bronze in Arzachena thanks to a lightening bike segment. Despite several third places at this level the top two podium places have eluded Steinhauser to now. This could be the race to change that. Germany’s Lisa Tertsch again proved she is one of the fastest out there over 5km, scoring comfortably the fastest splits in the last two races in Sardinia and Karlovy Vary. A good swim here could see a first return to the World Cup podium since her brilliant gold in Antwerp last year. Olympic Champion in 2012, silver medallist in 2016, Nicola Spirig picks up the path towards a possible fifth Games in Tokyo with only a first World Cup appearance of the year to test where her race-readiness is before what should be a huge 2021 of racing for the Swiss star. Two Brazilians with solid races in Karlovy Vary, Luisa Baptista and Djenyfer Arnold, will be looking to close out 2020 in positive fashion, while Britain’s Beth Potter was in sizzling form on both bike and run in Arzachena to seal a silver that will leave her full of confidence in Valencia. A predictably strong Spanish contingent will be spearheaded by Anna Godoy Contreras, Xisca Tous and Sara Perez Sala, with a host of local talent taking the opportunity of some World Cup start experience on home turf. Mexico’s Michelle Flipo scored European Cup bronze up the coast in Barcelona at the end of October and will be raring to go, Australia’s Natalie van Coevorden continues to fly the flag for Oceania and also just needs a good position off the bike to mount a serious challenge for the medals. Full women’s start list here. Men’s Race Saturday 7 November, 4.45pm CET It is hard to look beyond France’s Vincent Luis as the favourite to land a fourth successive 2020 gold in Valencia, but the men’s start list continues to pack in big names that will be ready to pounce if the Frenchman shows any - however unlikely - signs of end-of-year weariness. Luis has been able to hit the front from the first strokes of the swim since the return to racing and whether flat or hilly, sprint or standard distance, nothing has stood in his way. It was Kristian Blummenfelt who pushed him closest in Italy a month ago, where a tough bike climb played to the Norwegians strengths. Teammate Gustav Iden would also be more at home in the hills but will be looking for an explosive showing on the flat roads of Valencia. South Africa’s Henri Schoeman made his return to the blue carpet in Sardinia, and continues to gradually test his early Olympic preparations, while Jelle Geens will have his eye on another trademark rapid 5km finale to put himself into contention and could be one of the few who can stretch Luis over the closing stages of the run if still in touch. Alistair Brownlee’s continues along the path to a second defence of his Olympic title and knows that more displays like October’s in Arzachena will put him in prime contention for a spot on the GB team alongside his brother. Antonio Serrat Seoane and Genis Grau will be looking to put together big races in their native Spain, USA’s Tony Smoragiewicz and Brazilian Manoel Messias among the talents who could be pushing for a podium spot at the pointy end of the race. Full men’s start list here. Ironman triathlete Lionel Sanders sets Canadian record for distance cycled in an hour Lionel Sanders struck a blow for triathletes in the elite cycling ranks by breaking the Canadian hour record. The Ironman triathlete from Windsor, Ont., rode 51.304 kilometres in 60 minutes Friday at the Mattamy National Cycling Centre velodrome in Milton, Ont. Track cyclist Ed Veal held the previous record of 48.587 km set in the same velodrome in 2017. "My glutes are fried," Sanders told The Canadian Press from his car en route back to Windsor. "They don't work anymore." Despite horrific bike crash, Para-cyclist Kate O'Brien refuses to quit chasing her dreams The world record of 55.089 km was set in 2019 by Belgian pro cyclist Victor Campenaerts, who is currently competing in the Giro d'Italia stage race. "I know my position in the hierarchy, but I hope that the cyclists appreciate that triathlon cycling has come a long way," Sanders said. "We're not completely at the level that the single-sport athletes are, but we're not that far off." The 32-year-old averaged 17.194 seconds per lap over 205 on a solo ride in a nearly empty building. The event was streamed live on YouTube. What's New in the 303: New Broomfield Cyclocross Venue Rousing Success Colorado has more racing per capita than most any other state and the quality of the racing here is hard to beat. There is top talent like national champions Katie Compton and Eric Brunner who won the women’s and mens open respectfully. Carlos Casali made the trip from Wisconsin and took the men’s 40+ open victory. (check out this podcast 303 recorded with Carlos this week to learn about his life, his training regiment—he has ridden over 20,000 miles this year). When Lance Panigutti found out the Sienna Lake venue was not going to be available in 2020, the city of Broomfield presented another option tucked in a business park just north of highway 36 and east of Highway 287. “I like this area, it has good parking and amenities and room to expand. Its in an industrial park area with little impact on the city or public recreation areas. I’m quite pleased with how this turned out, I only wish the big run up challenge was a little closer,” said Lance. “The city was great to work with and I’m excited for this venue in the future.” Why You Might Love Zwifting Too Winter’s coming. Which means it’s time to pull out the cold riding gear and put away summer gear. Or is it? Well, if you race on Zwift or ride indoors, you don’t have to switch out your riding clothes. And that’s one of the many reasons why I’m a proponent of Zwift. Why I Like Riding Indoors Let me first start off by saying I love riding outside and I like riding indoors. I also wouldn’t propose riding inside if I didn’t use an app like Zwift. Here’s why I enjoy riding indoors on Zwift: I get to work on my weaknesses My two biggest weaknesses are climbing and sprinting. And you need to do both if you want to do well in a Zwift race. You also need to be a good time trialist to win on Zwift too if we’re being honest. All three weaknesses put me mid-pack in an A category Zwift race. With Zwift, I can pick a climbing course and focus on climbing up Alpe du Zwift. My smart trainer responds to the increase in gradient and adjusts accordingly. It feels like I’m climbing up an 8% grade for 60 minutes. It’s more efficient than trying to hunt down a 60-minute climb outdoors. For sprinting, I can either build a workout that focuses on sprints or I can join a race where I must sprint to attack, catch up, or win. Because of the racing, I’ve increased by FTP by 7% this year. I still haven’t mastered climbing or sprinting against other Zwifters, but it’s coming slowly….. The Mitchelton-Scott team withdrew after four staff members tested positive for the coronavirus following top rider Simon Yates pulling out last week. A Team Sunweb rider, one staff member from Ineos-Grenadiers and AG2R-La Mondiale also returned positive tests, organisers RCS said. RCS, in a joint statement with the International Cycling Union (UCI), said the teams’ doctors had ordered “isolation measures”. Nominated by the Colorado League community members, the winners will receive a 2019 Colorado Classic Young Rider Jersey signed by the world famous track and time trial superstar, Chloe Dygert. “The Colorado Classic is a trailblazer in it’s high profile support of female professional athletes. All youth are inspired by the visibility of exceptional female role models. Thank you for acknowledging 2020 exceptional student athletes,” said Kate Rau, Executive Director of the Colorado High School Cycling League. The winners will be announced on November 1 on social media. Those not part of the League, are encouraged to vie for a Chloe Dygert – signed jersey in the QOM Jersey competition. Taking place between October 15th and October 21st, participants are asked to join the Colorado Classic Strava Group, hop on their bikes and get climbing! The first cyclist to ride 13,668 feet in elevation (the total amount of feet climbed during the 2019 event) during that week-long climbing window wins. A second signed jersey will be awarded to the cyclist who records the most elevation gain during the Climbing Window. The #InspiredWeRide Jersey Campaign is the latest initiative in a series of ways the organizers behind the Colorado Classic have kept the cycling world engaged during this unusual and trying year; while furthering their mission be more than a race, and act as a movement to inspire and empower women of all ages to break the mold, and fight for their goals. Levels Health Tests and Results: For a given carbohydrate (eg, a banana), what is my blood glucose at different times of the day? Same carbohydrate paired with protein/fat different times of the day Same carbohydrate with no post exercise Same carbohydrate followed by aerobic exercise Pre/during/post aerobic exercise fasted Pre/during/post aerobic exercise fueled (Skratch vs. UCAN) Sunday 2 Hour Brick (90 minute ride/30-40 minute run) Before the test I had a cup of coffee and a high protein and fat breakfast of bacon, eggs and sourdough toast. I had a swig of UCAN Lemon, and a bottle of UCAN Lemon and another of UCAN Hydrate. The brick workout was a 90 minute ride followed by a 30-40 minute run. The protocol was to take a BGL measurement and fuel with UCAN every 15 minutes. The following were tests just prior to starting the ride and every 15 minutes, and a final post ride measurement. The lack of an initial spike in BG illustrates that my muscles are getting adequate glycogen from muscle stores or UCAN, or both. Starting with a high protein breakfast may have had an influence by starting me out with a steady BGL. On the ride, the effort was variable as measured by heart rate and perceived exertion. I was fueling consistently every 15 minutes with UCAN bar and energy drink. Just prior to the 60 minute measurement, a had an encounter with rider who honked off at me for riding their wheel. It actually got me a little honked off and got my adrenaline going (see 10:36 measurement; 101 and rising). It continued to rise to 122 fifteen minutes later. This increase could have been from one or more of the following. A) an increase in effort sending a demand for more glycogen; B) an increase in carbohydrate from UCAN; C) adrenalin rush from the encounter with the rude rider. 15 minutes into the run there was a 12 point drop, which would suggest a sufficient supply of fuel for the muscles and insulin was packing glycogen into the muscles. Fifteen minutes later the BG increased back to 95 suggesting a surge into the blood stream either from UCAN or the liver. The post run measurement was 97. I had a UCAN protein shake with milk after the run and then took a measurement at lunch. There was a big post run spike which I can only attribute to the UCAN protein shake. Why does exercise sometimes raise blood sugar? Exercise can trigger the body to release stress hormones, like adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline can stimulate the liver and the adrenal glands to release glucose and cortisol which makes you more resistant to insulin. Cycling: Giro d'Italia on brink of cancellation amid COVID-19 cases (Reuters) - The Giro d’Italia was on the brink of cancellation on Tuesday after five teams were hit by COVID-19 cases on the first rest day, with two of them pulling out of the three-week grand tour 12 days before the finish in Milan. The Mitchelton-Scott team withdrew after four staff members tested positive for the coronavirus following top rider Simon Yates pulling out last week. Jumbo-Visma, whose leader Steven Kruisjwijk tested positive, said they would not start the 10th stage on Tuesday. Sunweb’s Michael Matthews had tested positive and sports director Luke Roberts said the Australian was asymptomatic. ‘If This Works It’s Going To Change Everything’: Cycling’s BMC And F1’s Red Bull Advanced Technologies Hint At Cycling Revolution Red Bull Advanced Technologies’ Vehicle Science team has been helping BMC technicians with simulations of bike behavior based on data from Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models. World-class sportswomen combining motherhood with incredible athletic achievement. Kim Chakanetsa asks how they do it, what support they have behind the scenes, and what it means to them to be both a mother and a top athlete. Jasmin Paris is a record-breaking British ultrarunner and the first woman to win the infamous Spine Race, a winter marathon along the UK's Pennine Way which is widely regarded as one of the world's toughest endurance races. At the time Jasmin was still breastfeeding her baby daughter, and she had to express milk along the way. And that's not the only demand on her time - she also works full-time as a vet at the University of Edinburgh. Nicola Spirig is a 37-year-old professional Swiss triathlete, who gave birth to her third child in April this year, and was back competing just a few weeks later. Nicola won the gold medal in triathlon at the London 2012 Olympics, and came back after having her first child to win silver in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Now she's aiming for Tokyo 2020. Today we speak with Coach Matt Koorey about all things swim and triathlon coaching, starting with a deep-dive into the anxieties and phobias many of us have around swimming in the open water but are often too embarrassed to admit to and talk about. Recorded on Australia Day, this is the perfect discussion with the perfect Australian coach who was inspired by his own father, John Koorey - the first Australian male to swim across the English Channel in 1969 in a brilliant time of 10h32m - to follow his passion for sport. And let me tell you, there is no one more passionate about this sport of triathlon than Matt (please excuse the odd expletive - it's the passion bubbling to the surface!). Matt has completed both the 3-day Swim Smooth Coach Education Course (2013) and also spent 2 weeks in Perth with Head Coach, Paul Newsome (2015) completing our Certified Coaches program. Whilst not currently operating a swim squad or 1-2-1 sessions, Matt's philosophies and experience very much echo Paul's and the rest of the Swim Smooth coaching team, and to that end, they are very good mates. Matt spent several years being mentored by coach Brett Sutton (arguably the most decorated coach in triathlon history with athletes such as Chrissie Wellington, Nicola Spirig and Daniela Ryf to his coaching credentials). Matt's first for knowledge and improving himself as a coach, athlete, Dad and husband come pouring out of this interview, so we really hope you enjoy! From Matt's website: "Matt Koorey has thirty-five years’ experience as an elite level triathlete. Nineteen years as a professional triathlon coach. Dozens of IRONMAN 70.3 and IRONMAN age group victories to his name. Coach to pro triathlete’s Michael Fox (8h11m IRONMAN) and Alex Polizzi, plus multiple age-group Kona qualifiers. After multiple failed attempts to fulfill her Olympic dream, Claire Michel found herself on the starting line at Copacabana Beach in 2016. She earned her spot in the sport of triathlon to represent her country on the world's stage in Rio de Janeiro. She had every intention to shine. Shortly into the swim, Claire knew that she was expending precious energy that could prove costly as her competitors swam in packs on either side of her. They were moving faster and using less energy while she swam by herself doing all the work. She stayed present with what was unfolding, Claire is not one to panic. She gave it everything she had on the day. She came out of the water four minutes down from the leader. She got on her bike and got to work. The race was not over yet. As she approached the transition area to begin the 2nd lap of the bike she saw the media frenzy pass her by. She knew that the cameras were not there to capture her performance. They were there to broadcast the action of the lead pack which included 2016 medalists Gwen Jorgenson, Nicola Spirig and Vicky Holland. For the first time in her triathlon career, Claire was being lapped on the bike. She knew immediately this meant that her day was over. Everything she dreamed of, ended in an instant. She was in a state of shock and emotional disruption but what ensued next gave her the fuel to pick herself up and set her sights on Tokyo 2020. Claire is no stranger to failure and she knows that one of the greatest gifts in failure is the opportunity to rise up again. This is exactly what she has shown herself and the world since that day in Rio. Claire now trains under the guidance of Paulo Sousa and is a member of the coveted Triathlon Squad. She is thriving in her environment and there is no doubt in our minds that she will be shining on the world's stage again. This is a great conversation that covers so much about what it takes to be a top-level athlete and human. Thank you for tuning in and sharing this show with your community.
