Excited to have Lesley Paterson on the Anthony Walsh Podcast!
It's hard to keep going without knowing where the finish line is. But you can persevere more easily with some techniques like segmentation (“Two miles to the top.”) Simon Marshall, my former mentor and coach, who passed away from pancreatic cancer on June 1, 2024, taught me this on a fateful day in 2017. Hear a touching story of how he impacted my life and inspired me to attempt to ride 100k in the upcoming Tour De Cure 2024 in his memory. He and his wife Lesley Paterson offer many other valuable lessons in enduring suffering in their book, The Brave Athlete. While most of us are focusing on making one career work, this weeks episode is with someone who has totally dominated two completely different industries. When Lesley Paterson, 5x World Champion professional triathlete retired from sports, she was asked “What's next?” She replied she was moving around the world from Scotland to Los Angeles to write a screenplay and win an Oscar. If anyone doubted her, they might have felt justified as the years went by. It took 16 years for Lesley's screenplay, an adaptation of “All Quiet on the Western Front"; to get made - it was eventually picked up by Netflix. Lesley not only succeeded in her goal to win an Oscar, she won four. And seven Bafta's too. What an extraordinary story of the power of perseverance and believing in yourself.Lesley also has an amazing technique to overcome self doubt - which I'll defiantly be trying!_____Social media:@pippa.woodheadTigerhall@lesleydoestri Hosted on Acast. In this captivating podcast episode, we take a thrilling journey into the life and achievements of Lesley Paterson, a Scottish triathlete, author, screenwriter, and film producer. From conquering numerous triathlon world championships to establishing herself in Hollywood, Paterson's talent knows no bounds. Together with her writing-producing partner, Ian Stokell, Paterson embarked on a monumental endeavor - bringing Erich Maria Remarque's anti-war masterpiece, "All Quiet on the Western Front," back to life on the silver screen. Delving into their shared passion for the novel, they realized the potential for an adaptation using modern cinematic technology. Stripping the film of typical war genre clichés, she and Stokell crafted a screenplay that showcased the true essence of human struggle, hopelessness, and apathy during the war. Amidst financial challenges, including personal sacrifices and overcoming Lyme disease, Paterson's unwavering determination prevailed. The journey to bring this cinematic gem to life was a rollercoaster of ups and downs, with Daniel Radcliffe eager to act in the film, but the lack of funding posing obstacles. Fast forward to the present, the landscape of the film industry has changed, with streaming services gaining prominence. The success of story-driven films like "Parasite" and WWI-themed films like "1917" has opened doors for authentic storytelling. Through grit and determination, the project started to gain traction when German director Edward Berger and producer Malte Grunert approached Paterson and Stokell with a desire to create the film in the German language. With Netflix winning the bid, the stars aligned, and the film took flight. "All Quite on the Western Front" credited to Berger, Paterson, and Stokell, received accolades beyond measure, receiving nine Oscar nominations, and taking home 4 Academy Awards for best international feature, production design, score and Cinematography and an impressive fourteen BAFTA Award nominations with 7 wins in total, including the coveted Best Adapted Screenplay. Prepare to be inspired by Lesley Paterson as we unravel the story behind the Oscar-winning "All Quiet on the Western Front." Join us as we celebrate her triumphs, challenges, and unwavering passion that brought this film to life and into the homes of audiences worldwide.
With over 400 triathlons to her name, today's guest Lesley Paterson is a 3x XTERRA Triathlon World Champion and 2x World Triathlon Cross Champion. But if you asked about her greatest test of endurance, it wouldn't be a race. It would be chasing an Oscar. For 16 years during her professional triathlon career, Lesley fought to secure and maintain the film rights to All Quiet on the Western Front out of her own pocket from race winnings. She wrote and rewrote the script, and despite the odds stacked heavily against her, never gave up on her dream of getting the movie made. After many years of starts and stops the film was finally released and took home four Oscars and seven BAFTAs—including one for best-adapted screenplay (this was Lesley's first screenplay might I add). All of which is a testament to her patience, discipline, and hard work. Lesley's relentless persistence is the focus of today's conversation, along with the importance of self-belief, playing the long game, and the ‘never quit' drive required to crush audacious goals. Delightful, engaging, and strong, I adore Lesley. There's a lot to learn from this fiery Scottish lassie. Note: If you like this exchange, be sure to check out her book The Brave Athlete, which is packed with actionable practices to build an endurance mindset. Ladies n' Genminminmin (er, min) buckle-up for Lesley Paterson's extraordinary story of 'Triathletic Ascension' from being 3 times World Champion ExTerra Triathlete to BAFTA + 4 x OSCAR Award Winning glory!A story of grit, determination, tenacity and courage in how she overcome against all the odds, a bike crash, a broken shoulder, an injured leg AND Lime Disease to win & raise the ‘last push' £10,000 to re-secure the rights for her film, which then went on to secure all of the Awards for "All Quiet On The Western Front", including the OSCAR for Best International Feature. The stuff of Hollywood right there!Lesley Paterson earned the nickname ‘The Scottish Rocket' after wining no fewer than 5 world titles in athletics. More recently, she has picked up a new clutch of world-class awards in a completely different field, as the screenwriter of the Oscar-winning new version of "All Quiet On The Western Front".The youngest of 4, Lesley had older brothers to compete with. She played rugby with the boys and earned their respect. She enjoyed running for its spiritual values as well as its fitness benefits. Lesley also spent time training as a ballet dancer and later studying theatre and film in San Diego. A genuinely liberated renaissance woman, when it came to competitive swimming, Lesley said she had ‘the heart but not the numbers.' This didn't stop her winning her first world medal, in Maui, in a triathlon, in 2011. And that was after giving her competitors a 10 minute start while she dealt with a flat tyre in that section of the competition. Lesley is by her own confession a totally driven character with a strong focus on forward-momentum. Lesley and her husband Simon, a Performance Psychologist, co-wrote a book called ‘The Brave Athlete', designed to help competitors deal with a range of issues, which could compromise their performance on the track or in their social relationships. At a personal level, Lesley is inspired by the unconditional love shown by her parents and the inspirational versatility of the South African runner, Zola Budd. One of Lesley's favourite quotes is this: “Everyone is fighting a battle that you know nothing about.”Today Lesley Paterson has more than half a dozen screenwriter/film production projects on the go. She describes herself unashamedly as a ‘hustler' - but a very hard working hustler. Someone who always wants to be compassionate as well as passionate, inspirational as well as inspired, joyful as well as driven. Here is a multitalented, articulate woman with a unique story to tell. All Quiet on the Western Front is the 2022 film adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's famous anti-war novel. Told from the German perspective, it presents a gruelling depiction of life and death in the First World War, emphasising the despair and disillusionment of the soldiers who fought in it. The film has enjoyed great success, having already won seven BAFTA Awards and been nominated in nine categories at the upcoming 95th Academy Awards. But what does it take to transform a film like this from a passion project into a blockbuster hit? And how should filmmakers handle stories rooted in conflict? On today's episode, we are joined by Lesley Paterson, the film's executive producer and co-writer, and a world champion triathlete. She tells us about the trials and tribulations she faced to bring the project to fruition, and how history influenced her writing to bring the story to life.Produced by James Hickmann and edited by Dougal Patmore. If you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad-free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe to History Hit today!Download the History Hit app from the Google Play store.Download the History Hit app from the Apple Store. “I was a rugby player and a ballet dancer,” said Lesley Paterson, triathlete and co-screenwriter of the Oscar nominated All Quiet on the Western Front. Dabbling in acting and producing, it wasn't until she met her eventual writing partner Ian Stokell that she felt like screenwriting could be a path to a career in filmmaking. “To be able to act, you have to be able to write and produce your own films,” Stokell tells her. “Well that makes sense,” she says. “So that's when I got into the writing side of things.” Having read the novel in high school, she was intrigued by the idea of adapting the iconic novel. It's remarkable to think of Paterson writing an Oscar-nominated screenplay and training as a triathlete, but it's because she views both as one and the same. “I get up early. I'm an early person. Not everyone is, but we do know that there is a neuroscience of the brain from training.” Paterson, along with her husband Simon Marshall, PhD, have written extensively about these topics in their book, The Brave Athlete. “You have more motivation in the morning,” she says. “There's a part of your brain that processes emotional and physical pain and that tires out later in the day.” If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts? Lesley Paterson, a 5 times World Champion Triathlete who has become a BAFTA winning script writer for Netflix's wonderful 'All Quiet on the Western Front'. Having bought the rights to the best selling book, over the course of 16 years she relentlessly pitched the idea of the movie but no one was interested in a German language film about World War 1, without a star. She remortgaged her house but in the end she still had to find another $10,000 she didn't have, to keep the rights to the film. Lesley went back into training and entered a triathlon, the prize money was exactly $10,000 but the day before the race she fell from her bike and broke her shoulder. She strapped up, cycled, ran and swam using only one arm and against all odds she won the race. This weekend 'All Quiet on the Western Front' is nominated for 9 Oscars, including Leslie and her two writing partners Ian Stokell and the director Edward Berger for Best Adapted Screenplay. This week Jeff, John, and Dave discuss All Quiet on the Western Front (2022), the WWI anti-war movie that is the exception to the “stop making WWI & WWII movies” rule. From now on, no more. There are plenty out there, and we were stuck discussing Ant-Man and WWI this week. Ant-Man was the fourth most interesting character in his own movie (Boba Fett much?) and there are like 10 current wars going on right now. Come on. At least the film making was brilliant and it was a great “war sucks” movie that reminded us Nazis are fucking idiots, on top of everything else they are, and their minds were rat-fucked by assholes selling propaganda from their servant-adorning mansions. We discuss. John saw it in theaters, which is cool. Dave and Jeff did not. Netflix, amiright? “There's this feeling when you feel like you could fly and when you're that fit, when you're that peaked. For me it was always being out in nature, being out on the trails, being connected with the land. And when you can't do that because you're in continual chronic pain—that was a travesty. That's the piece of me that is my soul and the reason I do this, so when you take away all of that, you're left feeling so desperate.” Some injuries have a clear treatment plan and a defined timeline for recovery. Others are much more difficult to decipher, and leave athletes wondering what to do and when they'll be back training and competing again. In her 15 years as a professional triathlete, Lesley Paterson has encountered essentially every type of setback—often going from, as she puts it, “superhero status” to struggling with daily functions like sitting and driving. In this week's episode, she talks us through how she's coped with all of them, most significantly a chronic high hamstring/lower back/piriformis problem that's affected her for nearly a decade. When she's down for the count, Lesley—who now competes in XTERRA, or off-road triathlon—has learned how to redirect her considerable energy into her rehab and recovery. But that alone isn't enough, the five-time world champion points out. Athletes also need to find a way to connect with another source of joy. Her other passion is filmmaking, but it could be a hobby, relationship, or any other pursuit that keeps you moving forward when times are tough, she says. But here's the longer version… While growing up, my ‘thing' was rugby…yes you heard it right, rugby! I loved to get dirty and I loved to fight boys. Being the only gal outta 250 boys in the squad, I learned pretty quickly how to take care of myself! However, as with most good things in life, it came to an end. I was too old to play with the boys, so I found an equally crazy sport called triathlon. Since the tender age of 14, I've competed all over the world for the British and Scottish triathlon team, developing awesome friendships and seeing some amazing parts of the world.
