Send us a textWelcome along to another episode of AMP, on this episode we speak to Grant Paling, a triathlete of 11 years but relatively new to agegroup. Grant says"When I was a kid I had big dreams, like most kids do.Astronaut, actor, race car driver - the kind of dreams only an uninhibited child can conjure up, free to think of what might be.One of those dreams was to represent my country. Football, maybe athletics? I was inspired through watching my sporting heroes on tv. And thanks to my dad's love of sport, we watched a lot of it!Those days are now long gone, and I thought those dreams were left behind. When I started triathlon in 2013 I never dreamed of reaching any kind of heights, I just knew I loved it from day one.I played football for 26 years (much of which I spent chasing my first touch) and whilst I achieved some success, triathlon was different. Still part of a team, the amazing Tunbridge Wells Triathlon Club, my other “family”, but now ultimately competing on my own - no team around to do it for me if I didn't perform. But I persevered, inspired by those around me doing incredible things and in 2024, at 41 years old, I travelled to Coimbra in Portugal donning the Great Britain tri suit for the very first time and achieving one of those lifelong dreams by racing in the Middle Distance team for British Triathlon in the European Age Group Championships.I followed that up by competing again for GB in the Standard distance at the European Champs in Vichy in September and despite a bike crash, finished 17th overall.I'm known for my epic race reports within Tunbridge Wells Triathlon Club - I'd love to come on and share some of those experiences over the years and also to talk about how I reached new levels using an AI coaching app to prepare for stepping up to Age Group level, especially being time limited with 2 relatively young kids aged 5 and 7. Game changer!"we had a great chat about, how he juggles being a parent and triathlon and how he implements AI coaching in his training.please enjoy.you can find Grant on Instagram @GRANTPALINGYou Can Follow us  onYouTube - AMP GBInstagram @amp_1967Facebook : AMPGBfind all our episodes on our websiteWebsite is : https://agegroupmultisportpodcast.buzzsprout.com/email: agegroupmultisportpodcast@gmail.comIf you are an agegroup athlete and would like to come on the pod, get in touch.

Since starting the podcast in 2017, I've been fortunate to speak with quite a few Olympic Gold medallists. It's even more fun when you have known them since before that victory and observed their progress.   Today's guest is Leeds-based triathlete, Jess Learmonth. I've known Jess for quite sometime, and I'm so pleased to be chatting with her today! About 8 or 9 years ago she started swimming with our Masters group at the Survival Saturday session. 2 hours of pain overseen by our enthusiastic coach, Alan Hutchinson. Jess went right into the top lane and then carried on. As you'll hear in the show she was getting back into the pool after a 6 year absence. She'd started to dabble in triathlon and, because of the huge engine she built as a younger swimmer, she progressed very quickly. It wasn't long before she was selected for British Triathlon funding and a pathway through to the elite squad.   Arguably the strongest swimmer in the sport, Jess often emerged first from the water, and as one of the best cyclists, she then set the tone on the bike, hammering away at the front. As you'll hear, running was a struggle for Jess. The ‘floppy ankles & feet' required to be a good swimmer definitely do not help with running. In the conversation there's a great message from Jess' run coach Malcolm Brown about the value of consistency in training. Please listen out for that one. Jess and I also chat about:   The brutality of swimming squads for young athletes and why it “drained the life" out of Jess Why triathlon swimming seems so easy in comparison Having patience and building resilience Floppy ankles and not being a natural runner The hot, surreal experience of winning gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 Pregnancy, motherhood and why there are more important things in life than triathlon To find out more about Jess you can go to: Website - JessLearmonth.com Instagram - JessLearmonth   Jess recommended the book Scientific Training for Triathletes by Phil Skiba   Jess is a keen Leeds United fan and loves this podcast Square Ball: The Leeds United Podcast   **To get a free copy of my personal daily mobility routine, please click HERE** To contact Beth regarding Life Coaching, please visit her website at BethanyWardLifeCoaching.uk. The first triathlon in the UK was 1983. I did my first event in 1987 and while the sport continued to grow for the next 15 years it didn't really take off until the start of the Brownlee era from 2008.   Having said that, there are a significant number of folks who I consider the legends - the Triathletes, coaches, and administrators who were instrumental in building the foundations of British triathlon. Since I started the podcast in 2017 I have spoken with many of these legends. Great coaches like Steve Trew and some of the top athletes from the 90's and 2000's like Jodie Swallow, Sarah Springman, Robin Brew, and Richard Hobson to name a few.   Today's guest is another Legend of British Triathlon, Annie Emmerson, whose name you might recognise from her work with the BBC at triathlon events. We recently worked at Blenheim Triathlon and we started talking about her career in multi-sport from racing to broadcasting. In today's show we chat about:   How triathlon saved Annie from a life of wine bars and partying Some characters from the good ol' days.  Why racing as a pro isn't quite as glamorous as you think Female participation in triathlon  Who we think should be selected for the Team GB Olympic Triathlon team.   To find out more about Annie please check out her Instagram page   If you really want inspiration, follow David Smith MBE and listen to this podcast.   Facing death taught me how to truly live with David Smith MBE (E215)   Annie also recommended the following books: Stolen Focus by Johann Hari - why you can't pay attention and how to think deeply again The Secret Race by Tyler Hamilton - inside the hidden world of the TdF: Doping, Cover ups, winning at all costs   To contact Beth regarding Life Coaching, please visit her website at BethanyWardLifeCoaching.uk. Jack Buckner is the former two Olympic Games athlete and 5000 metre European Champion who is now CEO of UK Athletics, the governing body for track and field in Britain. Buckner has held the same position at British Triathlon and more recently British Swimming. This followed a career in sports marketing at Adidas, in the UK, Germany and the US.The impetus for our conversation was a recent announcement that UKA was entering a three way partnership with London Marathon Events and the Great North Run, to create a new group, called Athletic Ventures. This new organisation is set against the backdrop of the governing body reporting a record annual loss of £3.7m in 2023. Most of that deficit was due to the staging of major events. UKA was awarded up to £150,000 by UK Sport to help stage the Diamond League meeting last year, after it approached the funding agency for help. Despite it being a sellout, UKA is reported to have lost between £100,000 and £500,000 from the flagship event. In this interview, Buckner talks candidly about the future of track and field, World Athletics recent decision to pay athletes at this summer's Olympic Games and his aspiration to create the Glastonbury of Track and Field. Unofficial Partner is the leading podcast for the business of sport. In the last 6 years I have chatted with many great coaches, and today's guest is right up there with them!   Darren Smith is arguably one of the best triathlon coaches we have seen working with Olympic triathletes. I first met Darren when he was appointed as head coach for Scottish Triathlon, and our paths crossed at regular coaches meeting at British Triathlon. After 4 years at the helm of Scottish Triathlon Darren left and set up his own private nomadic triathlon group which became known as the D Squad. At the 2012 Olympics in London he had 6 triathletes from 6 different countries competing in the triathlon event. He gained a reputation for taking triathletes with an average swim and turning them into world class athletes. In 12 months he guided Annie Haug from a world ranking of around 60 to 2nd.  Some of the many topics we discuss today are: swim technique and why triathlon swimming is very different to the pool and requires a different technique the importance of working on run technique does gym based strength training have any value for triathletes?  total training load, and overtraining markers  how to build athlete consistency over many months/years   To follow Darren, please check out his LinkedIn profile and also follow him on Twitter (X) LinkedIn Twitter - Coachdaz   We also talked about: Alex Popov Swim technique video DISC profile test used by Darren with all of his athletes and mentioned by Sue Reynolds in her podcast.   Darren presented at the Science Triathlon Conference in 2015. You can see his presentation HERE. One attendee said, "I learnt more in a few days with Darren than I had done in years of my triathlon career. An incredibly intuitive coach - not afraid to think and apply outside the box. Back in 2000, I decided to rebrand my coaching business as TheTriathlonCoach.com. I'd been coaching for 4-5 years and built up a good roster of age group athletes. I was having to turn folks away so I asked my friend (also a coach) if he'd like to join me and take on some clients. His name was Jack Maitland, and he's my guest on the podcast this week and next week.   Jack and I started to grow TTC as it was known, but that wasn't all. In 2001 we put our names in the hat to run the Regional Talent ID Programme in the North of England. Having two coaches wasn't quite what British Triathlon had in mind, but we persuaded them and that was the beginning of performance triathlon in Leeds. A few years later the Leeds Performance Centre was born with Jack at the helm. And the rest, as they say, is history.   In this episode we talk about Jack's journey from orienteer to mountain runner to elite triathlete and then into coaching. We talk about our work together, his work in Leeds and then the development work with Alistair & Jonathan Brownlee. Today's episode finishes at the end of 2011 when Alistair was a favourite for Olympic Gold at the London 2012 Triathlon. It was a great trip down memory lane for both of us and I hope you enjoy it too as we discuss:   Competing at the Commonwealth Games demo event in 1990 Starting and developing the Leeds High Performance Centre in 2001 Building squads of athletes and coaching teams Coaching an Olympic medal contender at London 2012 To find out more about Jack please visit the following: Website: thesportsashram.com Instagram: Thesportsashram Twitter: @JackTheTriCoach Facebook: The Sports Ashram   Book Recommendation: Coherence by Dr Alan Watkins   To contact Beth regarding Life Coaching, please email her at Info@BethanyWardLifeCoaching.uk.   To leave a review of the podcast on Apple podcasts CLICK HERE.   Sports Nutrition questions - if you have a sports nutrition question that you would like answered on the podcast, please email it to me via Beth@TheTriathlonCoach.com. 20 years ago Jack Maitland and I were asked by British Triathlon to run one of the Regional Talent ID Programmes in the North of England. The brief was to find talented young boys and girls who were good swimmers and runners and who might turn out to be exceptional triathletes. We didn't do too badly with the two brothers (c'mon, you know who they are!!). Also in that squad was a young lady called Jess Towl. Jess was in the squad for 3-4 years and then left to train in Australia. On returning she joined the performance squad in Loughborough. Things didn't quite work out as planned so she left to teach swimming and turned herself into a very successful CrossFit Games competitor. As a triathlete, Jess didn't have the physique or the strength for CrossFit and, as she explains, it was a long and arduous, but very rewarding, journey. She now works in Dubai as a coach to both CrossFit athletes and Triathletes. We talk about the differences in training between the two sports,  learning to perform olympic lifts, having a performance mindset, owning a CrossFit world record and how she is rebuilding herself after a catastrophic shoulder injury.   Enjoy the show! Some time ago, I made an executive decision that as well as celebrating the current state of the British Triathlon elite performances we should also celebrate those athletes who came before. They are the foundation of the sport in this country and so I decided to have a sub-section of the Podcast called Legends of British Triathlon   One of those legends is this week's guest, Jodie Swallow. Jodie is an Olympian and a former world champion at both ITU Long distance and 70.3. Jodie retired from the sport in 2017 and has since become a full-time coach (you can find details of her coaching business in the show notes). She is also a mother of 3, including twins. It was really nice to catch up and reminisce and I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. As usual, we get into a lot of subjects including: The winning mentality How a stable environment has a positive influence on our performance and life Eating disorders in endurance athletes  The lack of female coaches in any sport and at the highest level To find out more about Jodie, please visit: Website CunnamaCoaching.co.uk Instagram @jodieswallowcoaching  Email cunnamaj@gmail.com for coaching enquiries with Jodie or squad coaches    Jodie is an exceptional swimmer. Friday July 29, 2022 was a day where trans inclusion in sports took two hits in a matter of minutes. England's Rugby Football Union voted to ban transgender women from competition in the contact sport all level, and within minutes, Rugby League revealed similar policy publicly. The reaction at any levels of the game was critical. A number of grassroots clubs across the UK condemned the bans that have been latest to join world governing bodies in swimming and cycling, and British Triathlon in near-draconian restrictions or outright blanket bans. One of those who vocally stood opposed was Bristol Bison head coach Sasha Acheson. Her views echoed many women in the grassroots game who opposed a ban. A key difference: Acheson holds caps. From 2014-2019 she was a part of England's national side, in addition successful career in league play. In prior to the vote she was speaking out, including a 6-minute scholarly Instagram Live teach-in that went viral. Karleigh Webb goes one-on-one with Acheson as they discuss standing up, speaking out and how to step forward as an ally. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
