So if you were interviewed by me over the weekend then it should be fairly easy to find yourself if you want to skip some parts. In the first section I speak to everyone in the queue for registration on Friday night. So if you were one of the unlucky ones to smile at me and then receive an interview, then it will be in the first 30 mins The middle part from around 30 mins is the pre-race chats at the start on Saturday morning. Then the on course interviews, mainly at Troutbeck (the pizza checkpoint) I also speak to race winners Lucy Gossage, Tom Smith and the previous course record holder, second placed male Joel Jameson. Then we dive back out on course to speak to everyone coming through the final checkpoint at Finsthwaite, just 5.3 miles from the end where we wrap things up.Thanks to everyone who put up with me pointing a GoPro or camera in their face over the weekend. Please feel free to share the episode in either audio or video, to anyone you know who was at the race over the weekend.URSHOME TRAILS

It would be amiss of us as part of our Winter Spine mop up not have a debrief with one of the winners, right? Step forward Lucy Gossage to fulfil that role. The ex pro triathlete and now (accidental) runner took the win after the toughing it out on the famed 268 mile race up the Pennine Way. We're mighty chuffed to hear her tell her tale of triumph through adversity as she nailed the race of her life at her 2nd attempt at the Spine, after all 2024 is so last year. Lucy picks up her tale of finding running during the covid pandemic, at a time when the world was a strange place and, for her personally, the end of a magnificent career in triathlon was drawing to a close. We're astounded to hear how much she's managed to raise for her charity Move Against Cancer and find out more about some of the magnificent work being undertaken to promote physical activity. Of course the 2025 Spine Race is the headline act and Lucy regales her journey through training, to the start line in Edale and on to a victorious conclusion in Kirk Yetholm. She's candid and open of the role personal heartache and betrayal played, on closing that chapter she's already started an exciting new one that she is evidently buzzing about. It's a terrific insight into the mind and motivation of an elite athlete who is so in touch with her own mindset. A story of transferring strength and resilience built through years of triathlon racing and applying it to a new discipline, just so happens that discipline is ultra marathoning. And aren't we the lucky benefactors of welcoming such prowess to the wonderful running community. Now, go get your lugs around this cracker, it does not disappoint.

Lucy Gossage has been around on the long distance triathlon scene for a long time, and she's instantly recognisable with her blue Erdinger kit and infectious smile. If you don't know Lucy, she has 14 Ironman victories to her name including IMUK, IM Wales, IM Lanzarote and Patagonman (basically all the toughest ones). In 2019 she stepped back from IM racing to focus more on her work as an Oncologist in Nottingham. You'll get a sense of how Lucy likes to challenge herself with that race resume, and today's conversation is all about another of those challenges. And they don't really come much bigger than The Winter Spine Challenge - 268 miles on the Pennine Way in the depths of winter.   It's a non-stop event requiring participants to be self sufficient. The temperature barely gets above 0ºC, with knee deep snow and blizzards at times, and as if that's not enough the sleep deprivation can literally be a nightmare. We chat about:   Weekly power strength yoga - "I just knew that I had to get as strong as I could"   The benefits of commuting to work and keeping it fun Walking poles in ultra racing - "As soon as I got them, I was like, oh my god, these are a game changer." Sleep walking - "The most terrifying discombobulating experience I've ever had." Shoe selection - "I went with Hoka Speedgoats, which many say is crazy for that terrain. But they were so comfortable." Sleep deprivation and cognitive function - "I could see the red lines on my Garmin where I'd gone off the course and I was like bloody hell I am actually sleepwalking."   To find out more about Lucy please use these channels: Twitter @lucygoss Insta @lucygossage     Link to topics we covered in the show NHS Blog posts Lucy and I talked for quite a bit at the start about the NHS and she mentioned some blog posts she had written. Lucy Gossage, Nikki Bartlett and Bex Milnes share wonderful insight into Lucy's recent remarkable Montane Spine Race achievement which she conquered in January of this year during one for the worst periods of weather the UK got this winter. Professional triathlete Nikki and her partner Bex Milnes supported Lucy's endeavours with Bex capturing images and updates of Lucy on the Pennine Way, meanwhile, Nikki turned the images and information received into an exciting socials storybook of tales from inside the race, capturing the imagination and hearts of everyone eager to follow Lucy's progress as she embarked and conquered one of the toughest foot races in the world.  Stretching 268 miles or 431km from Edale in Derbyshire, England to the village of Kirk Yetholm on the Scottish Border on the Pennine Way, if you don't know where that is, then get out your map and check it out.  Lucy gives us a glimpse of just what her preparation for an endeavour of this nature entailed as well as great insight into how her race unfolded, although we gloss over some of the intricate and technical aspects of the race, we still get to understand the remarkable journey undertaken by the 14 time IRONMAN Champion as she ventures beyond her comfort zone into uncharted mental and physical territory, pushing her limits to the brink to discover her true capabilities. In this episode, Bex and Nikki share their own version of Lucy's journey with some snippets of what it was like for them to follow the race as they closely and cautiously tracked her progress to the finishline.  As the race proceeded on the Pennine Way for Lucy, another story was unfolding behind the scenes which, when unravelled, would have heartbreaking consequences for Lucy. Resilient and robust as she is, she faced the situation head on and began picking up the broken pieces one bit at a time as she concurrently recovered from what she had put her body and mind through to reach the finishline of the Spine Race.   As you can expect, bringing the four of us together for a chat, resulted in lots of high energy, fun and laughter, the power of sport and friendship between these three incredible women as they share their personal stories of this epic adventure will certainly put a smile on your face and I have no doubt inspire you to step well outside your comfort zone!  If you enjoy this show and want to find out more insight from Lucy about her Spine Race be sure to pop over to her website www.lucygossage.com If you wish to support Move Against Cancer you can click on Lucy's Just giving page  https://www.justgiving.com/page/lucy-gossage-spine-move and while you are here tuning into the podcast, why not check out the chats I had with Lucy (Ep 26) and Nikki (Ep 8) for the podcast in 2020 and 2019 respectively!

Burnout and stress is on the rise. Finding work-life balance is increasingly elusive. What's the answer? The issue isn't necessarily too few hours in the day, it's how we use the hours we have - which comes down to our choices and priorities.Ed Jackson, the former pro rugby player turned walking quadriplegic who is now a charity fundraiser and TV presenter, came up with a superb formula for how to work out how to spend your time that helped save him from burnout. That formula was the adopted by another of my guests Lucy Gossage, the former Ironman Champion turned Oncology Doctor and Charity fundraiser, and it had a huge impact on her life which allowed her to have a hugely positive impact on so many other people's lives. In this episode:How Lucy realised she wasn't fulfilling her potential and was risking burnoutWhen she listened to Ed and the impact his formula hadHer advice for anyone in a similar positionUnderstanding the value of timeEd's formula that helps establish the value of time with extrinsic (money) and intrinsic (joy and purpose) activitiesWhy doing things for other people is so rewardingLucy's charity 5K Your Way: https://5kyourway.org/Lucy's full length episode on 'Self Talk': https://www.simonmundie.com/blog/lucy-gossage-self-talkLucy's Iron Mind coaching website with Helen Davis: https://www.thinkbelieveperform.co.uk/iron-mind/Helen Davis full-length episode on 'Beliefs': https://www.simonmundie.com/blog/helen-davis-beliefsEd's charity Millimeters 2 Mountains: https://www.millimetres2mountains.org/Ed's first full length episode on 'perspective': https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p08b258sEd's second full length episode on 'Hard Conversations': https://www.simonmundie.com/blog/ed-jackson-the-healing-power-of-hard-conversationsEd's book 'Lucky': https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lucky-Ed-Jackson/dp/0008423369Follow me:Instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/Twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from four years and 200 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.com (where you can also drop me an email)Please do share this episode with anyone who struggles to manage their time, or is feeling disillusioned with their career, or is suffering - or has suffered - with any of the symptoms of burnout. This week's guest is Dr Lucy Gossage Lucy is a triathlete and doctor and on underpinning that a phenomenal person. Lucy started her career almost by accident, just trying out in triathlon for fun, then got the bug, entering her first ironman and steadily realising that she could go pro and taking 12 Ironman titles. In between swimming, biking and running, Lucy studied medicine at Cambridge, where she also undertook PhD in kidney cancer and is now a consultant oncologist at Nottingham University Hospital We talk about how it all started for Lucy, her rise to being pro, how she managed the effort of medical and triathlon training. We discuss how she preferred not to overcomplicate her training, keeping things simple and unfussy, in this case not use a scientific approach. We also discuss her career as a cancer doctor, how this gave her perspective through the hard days training and racing, how she copes working with patients suffering each day and how she is campaigning through the charity ‘5k your way' a community based initiative encouraging those living with cancer to stay physically active.   Links Lucy Gossage https://lucygossage.com/ Follow her on Twitter https://twitter.com/lucygoss 5 k your way https://5kyourway.org/   Hi, I'm Steve Ingham Sports and Performance Scientist co-founder at Supporting Champions. "Time is more valuable than money. You can get more money, but you cannot get more time."Most people are super busy and the rates of burnout are soaring. So, something has to give, but the question is what? One person who came up with a brilliant formula for working out how to spend his time is Ed Jackson. Ed was a professional rugby player who broke his neck and was told he would never walk again but has made a remarkable recovery. Ed's formula for how to spend his time changed his life, and also changed the life of one of my other guests who listened to our conversation, and adopted Ed's formula in her own life. She was an awesome age grouper who turned pro about a decade ago, at a similar time to Lucy Gossage. Things unravelled somewhat though and she took time away from triathlon. More recently she’s been national hill climbing champion, she's become a yoga teacher and she raced in the UCI E-Sports World Championships.  It’s a fascinating story about burning out and learning to find balance, with so much stuff that we can all relate to You'll hear: 21:30 Lou talks about trying to combine 20 hours of training with 60-70 hour work weeks "there is only one way that is going to go eventually" 26:50 When Lou decided to step back from triathlon and how she dealt with the emotions and mental struggles that came with the decision. 33.35 We talk about yoga, why it has helped Lou, why it took her time to get into it and why she decided to become a yoga teacher. 45:15 We talk about hill climbing on a bicycle - 'crazy' events that draw big crowds. It's a TT on a short hill and you go up as fast as you can. Lou won the National Hill Climbing Championships after a number of attempts. Lucy Gossage is a 14x Ironman champion, and legend of Ironman UK and Ironman Wales. Helen Davis is a Chartered Sports Psychologist who worked with Lucy over the last 4 years of her career. It's easy to imagine that success and confidence come easily to a 14x Ironman Champion like Lucy Gossage. However, in frank and open interview, Lucy talks about how she suffered from 'imposter syndrome' for almost all her racing career, never feeling like a 'proper' professional, and often struggled with the confidence and self belief that she could do well in races. In this dual interview, Lucy talks about how working with Helen revolutionised both her training/racing performance, and her belief in herself in her wider life.Helen and Lucy have teamed up to produce the 6-video IRON-MIND course, which has been developed for Ironman and other endurance athletes to enhance their psychological approach to training and racing. "IRON-MIND is structured on evidence-based research and experience in sport psychology consultancy," says Helen. In this special edition, Lucy and Helen talk through some very practical, actionable mental training exercises that you can do to improve your mental strength and confidence in your ability. You can learn more about the Iron-Mind program at https://www.thinkbelieveperform.co.uk/iron-mindShow Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. Non Stanford has been involved in and surrounded by sport for her entire life. She was destined for big things on the track and was 3x Welsh Schools 1500m champion, before being mentored by Dame Kelly Holmes. But injuries took their toll and Non made a successful transition into triathlon. She moved to Leeds and in 2012, she was crowned U23 World Champion. Just a year later, she became ITU World Champion. But Non has had her fair share of ups and downs since. 2014 was wiped out by injury, in 2016, she finished 4th behind GB teammate Vicky Holland at the Rio Olympics. At the end of 2018 Non left the Leeds set up to join Joel Filliol’s squad. She won WTS Hamburg in 2019, before having knee surgery at the end of the year which put her hopes of a second Olympics in doubt. You’ll hear: *Non open up about the disappointed after the Rio Olympics and ‘not dealing with it’ at the time *How she considered jacking it all in *The key thing she has learnt from Joel Filliol “You don’t need to push really hard in training to race well” *The downside of pressure and being a perfectionist *Her love for Geraint Thomas (as well as fiancee Aaron Royle, obvs), Taylor Swift doc and her Grandma’s welsh cakes Like what you heard? It’s not quite like walking on the moon, but it’s not far off, but sometimes when you are in the depths of injury and rehab, you think ‘will I ever get back to running?’ but this gives a glimmer of hope that normality will resume.  I’ve been on a bike from about week 3 or 4 of rehab, but I am really restricted on the intensity I am able to do and until week 16 I am not allowed to go over 100 watts. I think I would struggle to get off my drive at 100 watts.  I’m doing a lot on the indoor trainer and I have an altitude generator so even thought I am riding easy, I am getting some cardio vascular benefits. 3.30 What are you like as a patient?... Lucy Gossage finished last in a cross country race when she was 13 or 14. And while she didn’t realise it at the time, she now recognises that a fear of failure held her back from participating in any competitive sport until she was talked into doing her 1st triathlon at the age of 26. Fast forward a few years, she’s now an oncology doctor and former professional triathlete who won 13 x Ironman Championships throughout her career. Lucy has now returned to working as an oncology doctor part-time while using her available time to chase new experiences outside her comfort zone (like her recent race at Patagonman) while using her platform to drive exercise-related initiatives for cancer patients and thrivers. In this conversation, we discuss the fear of failure, how suffering is a choice for athletes and the Imposter Complex.
