We review the racing from Challenge Wanaka last weekend and what the acquisition of Challenge by the PTO might mean for racing going forward. Regan Hollioake, the defending IRONMAN New Zealand champion, reflects on her journey as a professional triathlete. We chat about her season last year and the financial realities of being a professional athlete, plus the unique challenges of travel and race selection, particularly for athletes based in Australia and New Zealand. Regan shares with us the issues she's faced managing hydration levels in hot races like Kona and her thoughts on the upcoming race at IMNZ and the excitement of returning as a defending champion. 00:00 – Challenge Wanaka and the acquisition of Challenge by the PTO 18:34 – IRONMAN Cairns free race entry competition 20:42 – Regan Hollioake 53:54 – The triathlon calendar 2026 LINKS: IRONMAN New Zealand at https://www.ironman.com/races/im-new-zealand Follow Regan Hollioake on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/rlhollioake/ Challenge Wanaka at https://challengefamily.com/ IRONMAN Cairns at https://www.ironman.com/races/im-cairns
This week we start with a big result for Maya Kingma, who has won her first professional cycling race. After previously talking about triathletes trying to make the jump into cycling, it's a result that feels genuinely significant. We then move to Lucy Charles-Barclay, who has undergone surgery, and where that leaves her as she looks ahead to the rest of the season. From there, the conversation turns to Lionel Sanders. Lionel has suggested this might be his final Kona, which has led many to wonder whether retirement could be closer than expected. As always, even a small comment from Lionel quickly becomes a talking point. We then shift focus to racing in the southern hemisphere, starting with Challenge Wanaka. With both the pro series and T100 kicking off in the south this year, Wanaka is well placed to benefit from that early-season momentum. Next up is the Ironman New Zealand start list, where names like Kristian Blummenfelt, Kat Matthews, and Kyle Smith give the race real weight. We finish the episode by looking ahead to the T100 Gold Coast, and what this season could have in store as the series continues to take shape. Mike shares his thinking behind his decision to protest at the recent Loan Market Tauranga Half. We discuss the implications of the newly announced Pro Series, the importance of course familiarity and the evolving dynamics of drafting rules in triathlon. He also reflects on his past races, the impact of technology on race fairness and his plans for upcoming competitions including IRONMAN New Zealand in March After four pros inadvertently rode a shortened section of the bike course at the Loan Market Tauranga Half, protests were lodged, an appeal was heard and the final outcome saw a 2:26 time penalty added to their results. We break down exactly what happened on course and behind the scenes and discuss why we believe the final ruling reflects the proper application of the rules once the facts were established. 00:00 – Kathmandu Coast to Coast 12:24 – Loan Market Tauranga Half Protest 25:29 – Mike Phillips LINKS: Follow Mike Phillips on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/mikephillipsnz/ Loan Market Tauranga Half at https://mountfestival.kiwi/events/tauranga-half/ Kathmandu Coast to Coast at https://www.coasttocoast.co.nz/ IRONMAN New Zealand at https://www.ironman.com/races/im-new-zealand
We chat about the impact of the new 20m draft ruling and how it might affect racing going forward. The Loan Market Half results hang in the balance as we await a decision from race officials regarding 4 pro athletes having gone off course at the start of the bike and re-entered further up the road - effectively missing at least a kilometre of the course. In this episode of the IRONMAN Insider Podcast, host Matt Lieto sits down with two-time IRONMAN champion Hannah Berry, one of the sport's most consistent and quietly respected competitors. Hannah reflects on her fourth-place finish at the 2025 IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, a performance that showcased her strength, patience, and ability to execute on triathlon's biggest stage. She breaks down her Kona race in detail, sharing how smart pacing, disciplined nutrition, and heat management helped her move steadily through the field as others faltered. Hannah also discusses racing as an underdog, the value of consistency across all three disciplines, and why Kona rewards athletes who stay composed when conditions turn brutal. The conversation looks ahead to racing IRONMAN New Zealand on home soil, the evolving dynamics of elite women's racing, and adapting to the new 20-meter drafting rules. In this episode, we hear from Matt Forman.Matt shares his background, how he got introduced to triathlon and his experience at Ironman New Zealand.
Regan Hollioake, Professional Triathlete from Australia, talks to us about her journey from competitive open water swimming to triathlon. Regan discovered cycling as a strength after a standout performance at Busselton where she set the fastest ever age group female time. Living in a small town three hours north of Melbourne, she often trained alone but has more recently benefited from joining a training squad in Ballarat. We discuss her progression in running, from a 3:15 marathon to a 3:03 at IRONMAN Australia, despite not having a formal running background, and how she maintains a mindful approach to training volume to avoid injuries. Regan's debut as a professional athlete was at IRONMAN New Zealand, where she raced against notable competitors like Chelsea Sodaro and Els Visser. Despite initial doubts, she excelled and secured a fourth-place finish, validating her decision to go pro. We discuss her challenging lead-up to IRONMAN Australia, where she competed and won the race despite suffering a broken rib from an accident in the pool and an ulcerated cornea. Most recently Regan raced and won the full distance at Challenge Gunsan in Korea. Her next stop? Lake Placid and then the IRONMAN World Champs in Nice. She'll definitely be one to watch out for. Rachael Cunningham won the free race entry to IRONMAN New Zealand. We find out more about her. We explore the crucial role of mental fitness in endurance sport and its significance for both performance and recovery. We discuss how athletes handle pre-race anxiety and stress differently and the mental resilience required in elite adventure racing where cognitive stamina and decision-making under duress are as crucial as physical ability. We share insights from an episode of That Triathlon podcast with certified psychologist Stuart Holliday, who specializes in working with endurance athletes. Stuart discusses the o of self-talk and the need for athletes to conduct a robust self-assessment, examining their psychological approach before, during and after races. We introduce Matt Fitzgerald's book "How Bad Do You Want It?" as a resource for understanding and improving mental toughness in the face of adversity. We examine key concepts such as the central governor theory by Tim Noakes, discussing the role of the brain and mind in athletic performance. We also explore the notion that athletes don't encounter their true physical limits due to a maximum tolerance for perception of effort. While some individuals possess an innate ability to push past their perceived limits, for most, this is a skill that can be developed. We touch on cases where athletes perform significantly better on race day compared to their training sessions, suggesting a psychological component that unlocks higher intensity and effort levels. Lastly, we consider the role of psychology in recovery, discussing practices like yoga nidra and meditation, which can aid in activating the parasympathetic nervous system for improved rest and digestion. This week we interview Ian Smith, who recently completed Ironman New Zealand - knocking over an hour off his previous Ironman best, despite now being, in his words, ‘the other side of 50.' Ian has dedicated himself to his training over the last two years with Team Oxygenaddict, but has also paid a lot of attention to his family-work-training-life balance. Having moved to Australia for a more outdoor life, he's embraced early morning training to beat the heat of the day, and has learned to love open water swimming, despite his encounters with sharks! Mike has done announcing and television for Running and Triathlon events worldwide since the late 70's. He's had a microphone in his hands for 1000's endurance events. Mike Reilly is best known as the Voice of Ironman and has announced 100s of Ironman events around the world, including 33 Kona Ironman World Championships. 100's of thousands of triathletes worldwide have heard his famous phrase “You are an Ironman!” and he has called millions of athletes across a finish line. An IRONMAN Hall of Fame, USA Triathlon Hall of Fame member and Running USA Hall of Champions. He's a a world-renowned race announcer, commentator, podcast host “Find your finish line podcast” and author to his inspirational book “Finding my voice.” Mike called his final race, Dec 10, 2022 at Ironman New Zealand. Over 40 years of calling events… this man is truly an Ironman! Timestamps 3:40 - Interview with Mike Reilly begins 6:49 - Mike explains how he came to the decision to retire and the thought process involved. People identify me for what I've done ... but I identify myself by my family 10:37 - Walking away from his last race call in Kona was incredibly special and emotional. Mike explains how he felt and how it played out. It's not just you saying goodbye to the sport, it's the sport saying goodbye to you 15:11 - Are athletes still gonna hear the phrase "YOU are an Ironman"? 17:25 - It all started for Mike Reilly in San Diego, CA, where Mike found his passion for endurance sports while training and racing local events in Southern California. He ran the first of twelve marathons in 1978 and competed in his first triathlon in 1979. That was the same year he picked up a microphone for the first time. Two years later he announced the first ever professional triathlon in Solana Beach, CA. He also called the first ten years of the Rock ‘n' Roll Marathon, the most popular marathon series in the world. At the end I just said to myself ... it's just time! 22:00 - Mike explains the story on how he called his first race. It's about much more than standing with a microphone calling out finishers' names. Mike's 19-hour day typically starts before 5:00 am, where he presides over the swim-to-bike transition area as athletes rack their cycles and make last-minute adjustments. He provides critical information about late-breaking changes, course conditions, and the minute-by-minute schedule necessary to get the swim off to a smooth start. He's then responsible for guiding the athletes into the water and providing instructions about the particulars of the starting protocol, including “gentle guidance” about their positioning. After the swim gets underway, Mike keeps spectators informed about the relative positions of the leaders, and then announces the names of athletes as they complete the swim and head out on the bike portion. During the day, Mike positions himself in a variety of locations to watch the athletes as they come in on the bike and hit various spots on the run course, constantly updating the spectators as to the leaderboard as well as conditions out on the course. Then it's over to the finish line, where Mike will spend over nine hours bringing in every athlete in the race, providing nuggets of personal information about as many of them as it's possible to squeeze in. During the last hour or so of the race, as the clock winds down to the 17-hour cutoff mark, Mike will come down from the announcing booth and move right next to the finish line. At that point he'll do whatever it takes to keep the crowd energized and the last, struggling finishers motivated to make the cutoff: He'll shout, dance, wave a towel, and even run into the finishing chute to run alongside exhausted athletes and shout encouragement. When they step across the line, they're treated to the sweetest sound in the sport: Mike yelling “You are an IRONMAN!” at the top of his lungs, as he's already done as many as 2,500 times that day. 27:45 - Mike tells the story about how the phrase "You are an Ironman" came about. 33:29 - Mike's Instagram message announcing his retirement. Don't worry, you'll be an Ironman tomorrow ... 33:29 - Mike's Instagram message announcing his retirement. 35:59 - Mike has written a phenomenal book; Finding My Voice with stories from his career. He shares a few of the most memorable stories with us. 40:31 - The finish line at an Ironman is one of the most 'alive' places you can every experience. Mike and Greg discuss the stories and metaphors for life that exist around completing an Ironman race. 43:03 - Mike describes some of the low moments where he may have said things on mic that he now feels was not appropriate. You can't do that kind of stuff when you are publicly on a microphone 50:23 - Mike and Greg discuss the process of writing the book - Book: Finding My Voice 54:57 - Be sure to subscribe and listen to Mik'e podcast - Find Your Finish Line 58:30 - Mike and Greg discuss the sport of triathlon ... where it is now, where it's come from, and where they see it going in the future.
