610. Join us this week as David Snow tells us about English traveler David Ingram. "In The Extraordinary Journey of David Ingram, author Dean Snow rights the record on a shipwrecked sailor who traversed the length of the North American continent only to be maligned as deceitful storyteller. In the autumn of 1569, a French ship rescued David Ingram and two other English sailors from the shore of the Gulf of Maine. The men had walked over 3000 miles in less than a year after being marooned near Tampico, Mexico. They were the only three men to escape alive and uncaptured, out of a hundred put ashore at the close of John Hawkins's disastrous third slaving expedition. Today we celebrate the first edition of The Picayune on Wednesday, January 25, 1837. It contained 4 pages, few graphics, and was distributed by two carriers who sold 800 of the 1000 copies that had been printed from the office at No. 38 Gravier Street. The following day, January 26, 1837, 2,000 copies were printed and sold. It was the first New Orleans newspaper to sell for less than a dime. A picayune (a Spanish coin) equaled about 6 1/4 cents. When the Krewe of Clones (founded in 1978) decided to become more respectable, Craig "Spoons" Johnson and Don Marshall decided to keep the parade's original raucous, art-inspired spirit alive by starting Krewe du Vieux Carré. At first, the ragtag krewe had 16 subkrewes, and a collection of mule-drawn or hand-pulled handmade floats. But by 2001, KdV had its first title float, and its membership was growing. Its numerous subkrewes with names like Krewe of C.R.U.D.E., Krewe of L.E.W.D. and Mystic Krewe of Spermes meet in the "Den of Muses," a warehouse space, to bring together their costumes and floats. In 2006, KdV was the first parade to march post-Katrina, and garnered national attention for its tenacity and lightheartedness in the face of tragedy. That year's theme was "C'est Levee." Other themes over the years have included "Habitat for Insanity" and "Where the Vile Things Are." Their after party is called "The Krewe du Vieux Doo." Today Krewe du Vieux is loved for its wild satire, adult themes, and political comedy, as well as for showcasing some of the best brass and jazz bands in New Orleans. Postcards from Louisiana. Today we're just coming to grips with the horror levied on dozens of revelers on Bourbon Street in the early hours of New Year's Day, and I found it notable that Ken Suguira, a sports writer with the Atlanta Journal Constitution penned - in my mind - one of the more poingant pieces of journalism from the scene. There to cover the University of Georgai's football game, he was, instead, thrust into action reporting on a terror attack. In Georgia's Cobb County - a decidedly (now) "blue" county has a deadlocked 2-2 commission split after the state's GOP-heavy general assembly redrew the county's commission district map - which drew an elected commissioner out of her district barely a year into elected office. A judge Tuesday affirmed that - let's call it what it is - partisan tactic. The unseated commissioner - Jerica Richardson - called it what it is: "precedent that the General Assembly has the blanket permission to remove a sitting elected official, at any time, and for any reason. " Meanwhile, outside Augusta, a similar bedroom community county had toyed with incorporating all of its unincorporated areas to surround the only two incorporated cities in that county in what's a naked attempt to "freeze" a purported rise in the number of (ahem) "radical activists" in the growing hamlet of Grovetown (my hometown). Local conservative talk radio host Austin Rhodes fears "public housing" and "public transit" there and eventually creeping into the hoity-toity gated community area of the county some 7-10 miles away. Knowing that town's history, as I do, it's incumbent on me to remind Austin that Groetown's history is rife with "low income" housing and "public transit" back when frontier folks took the PIcayune train "to town," but I digress. Conservatives fear democracy; seek to smother it to sleep whenever possible in Georgia it would seem.

In the 1970s, momentum grew to restore the area's natural hydrologic flow and environmental integrity. Now the ambitious Picayune Strand Restoration project is nearly complete. FGCU Professor in the Department of Ecology & Environmental Studies Win Everham, Ph.D. has been monitoring the site's restoration progress by studying the status of several indicator species. He joins us to talk about the project ahead of his lecture later this month titled “Picayune Strand Restoration Project: It could have been Cape Coral South.”

You can download June's Journey here! --- https://woo.ga/p2v43o On the evening of August 21, 1989, Norman Ladner, a 17 year-old high school student, went hunting on his family's property in Picayune, Mississippi. When Norman didn't return by 7:00 pm, his parents grew concerned and went looking for him. Ultimately, Norman was found in the woods, dead from a single gunshot wound to the temple. A coroner and a medical examiner ultimately ruled that Norman had committed suicide. However, his parents have adamantly denied this possibility, and maintain that he was murdered. It's been over 34 years since Norman died, and his loved ones are still searching for answers...
