Hosts Dr. John Gartner and Dr. Harry Segal are joined by psychoanalyst, teacher, and author Dr. Pilar Jennings to dissect Trump's unhinged statements about invading our allies. As Donald prepares to retake power, our hosts are more committed than ever to call out his cognitive decline and extreme narcissism, while providing audiences with tools to cope with it all. We'll talk about how Donald's grandiose expansionist fantasies, which reflect a delusional mind prone to destruction, may impact international relations.  The Dr.'s also highlight broader issues of corporate complicity that we face, as the Press continues to normalize Trump's behavior, and social media outlets like Facebook are bending to his influence. This has shown to be particularly problematic as corporate media fails to challenge Trump's irrational and dangerous military threats against Greenland, and the Panama Canal. Therapist and long-term Buddhist practitioner Dr. Pilar Jennings joins the show to offer insight on maintaining your inner peace amid so much external chaos. She shows how contemplative practices, and a robust mindset can be your anchors during such times. Dr. Jennings also provides our listeners with practical tools we can use every day to strengthen self-awareness and harness our emotions using Buddhist techniques—like meditation and using gratitude as a means to recenter our focus. Dr. Siegel shares his insights into the mounting hysteria surrounding Elon Musk's rise to power, whom he describes as a modern-day enabler of authoritarian regimes. And our hosts urge the audience to remain vigilant, critical, and vocal of such actors. John and Harry equip you with the knowledge and psychological tools needed to navigate this difficult political landscape, and give you the critical thinking and coping strategies required for psychological resilience on the road ahead. Be sure to join us next time, as we continue to provide incisive psychological analysis of current politics, seeking to empower their audience amid the coming storm. Learn more about your ad choices. Early on in her clinical practice, psychoanalyst Pilar Jennings was presented with a particularly difficult case: a six-year-old girl who, traumatized by loss, had stopped speaking. Challenged by the limitations of her training to respond effectively to the isolating effect of childhood trauma, Jennings takes the unconventional path of inviting her friend Lama Pema--a kindly Tibetan Buddhist monk who experienced his own life-shaping trauma at a very young age--into their sessions. In the warm therapeutic space they create, the young girl slowly begins to heal. The result is a fascinating case study of the intersection of Western psychology and Buddhist teachings. On this week’s show, psychotherapist Dr. Pilar Jennings, PhD, joins Amy and Dr. B. to talk about Buddhism, psychotherapy, trauma, and to discuss her book, To Heal A Wounded Heart: The Transformative Power of Buddhism and Psychotherapy in Action. She describes her history with Buddhism, psychotherapy, and meditation, and how this background led her to bring them all together in her career. Pilar discusses how this unconventional version of therapy focused on being with and accepting silence can help children to open up that are not willing to with more conventional therapies. Sometimes, people don’t have the words to express their feelings, and that’s ok. She spends some time talking about trauma. Where can it originate from, what different forms can it take, and why isn’t it as simple to identify as people tend to think? They discuss the common ground between psychoanalysis and Buddhism, namely equality of listening, or fair attention, and how the integration of Buddhism is accepted within the psychotherapy community. They end by talking about how she chose the name for her book, and what she really wanted to call it. You can find Dr. Jenning’s book on amazon.com and wherever books are sold.

December 10: The Ghosts of Childhood: A Buddhist and Psychoanalytic Response In the Buddhist and psychoanalytic healing traditions, there is great respect paid to the impact of suffering and its ripple effects throughout the life cycle. The traditions, however, diverge in their understanding of what causes suffering. This is particularly true of childhood trauma. In this session, Dr. Jennings explores how these respective approaches to early suffering differ and offer areas of complementary treatment. Themes will include the impact of early parent loss, anxiety in family systems, and childhood depression. Together we will examine how these experiences impact both psyche and spirit in the life of individuals and communities.

Once upon a time Therapy and Religion were considered to be separate compartments of the human experience. But now, more and more, we are beginning to see a mixing and blending of religion/spirituality and therapy. Our guest this week has much to share with us about this phenomenon particularly as it relates to two things: 1) the power of relationship and 2) psychoanalysis and Buddhism. Pilar Jennings, PhD is the author of Mixing Minds: The Power of Relationship in Psychoanalysis and Buddhism. Obviously relationship is at the center of both the practice of religion and the practice of therapy. But how do we engage both practices in a therapeutic setting without reducing either to the terms of the other? Can we legitimately explore both in the therapeutic setting trusting that neither will be reduced to the terms of the other? Do you ever wonder if your psychological issues are really spiritual or vice versa? Tune in, you might just walk away with your answer.
