Nederland maakte het weer waar als schaatsland afgelopen weekend en Erik en Frank zijn er blijer mee dan ooit: want al die mooie personages, waarvan één met theemuts, dat doet ze wel wat. Verder kan de opening van het Formule 1-seizoen niet onbesproken blijven natuurlijk, gaat het over het grote artikel over de jeugdopleiding van AZ en over de wedstrijd tussen  Ajax en AZ. En, last but not least: we duiken in de bergen tekeningen die zijn ingestuurd!

Vanavond met Sophie: Jenning de Boo schuift aan over zijn WK-titel. We blikken vooruit op hét belletje tussen Trump en Poetin. Oranje staat binnenkort in de kwartfinale van de Nations League tegen Spanje. En we eren Rob de Nijs met Cornald Maas, Frits Spits en een optreden van Frank Boeijen.  

Hij deed ons toch weer verbazen, die Jenning de Boo. Het middenterrein stond even stil toen De Boo z'n eerste wereldtitel behaalde.  Gelukkig zetten wij van de NOS Schaatspodcast precies op tijd de microfoons weer aan om na te praten! De coach van Jenning de Boo, Dennis van der Gun, schuift ook aan. Dat kwam goed uit want met Femke Kok en Antoinette Rijpma-De Jong leverde zijn ploeg Reggeborgh nog twee wereldkampioenen. Het mes stond de schaatsers een weekend lang op de keel. Wie werd er Nederlands Kampioen Afstanden en wie kwalificeerde zich voor het WK? Na een weekend vol adrenaline neemt Marijke Groenewoud plaats achter de NOS Schaatspodcast-microfoon. Ze won drie keer goud in Heerenveen en was op zaterdagavond ook nog precies op tijd in Utrecht om haar 15e marathon van het seizoen te winnen. Groenewoud vertelt over waarom nu wel lukt, wat er de afgelopen maanden minder ging. En we filosoferen over de comeback van (voormalig?) ploeggenoot Irene Schouten. "Heel veel mensen zeggen dat ik dan in dienst moet gaan rijden voor Irene." - Ga je dat doen? "Nou nee. Lijkt me niet." De baanrecords van Jenning de Boo en Femke Kok maakten ook op Groenewoud indruk. En we hebben het over Kjeld Nuis, Jutta Leerdam en Suzanne Schulting. Wat een ontknoping van drie dagen schaatsen in Thialf! In de laatste rit van het EK Allround bij de vrouwen reed Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong tegen Joy Beune. Ze ging als aan een elastiekje achter Beune aan, in de wetenschap dat ze een dikke 5 seconden mocht verliezen. Rijpma-de Jong hield een seconde over en werd zo Europees kampioen. Daarna reed ze een rondje in een koets achter paarden die ze ook nog eens bleek te kennen. En toen schoof ze ook nog eens aan bij ons in de NOS Schaatspodcast. Wat een dag! Afgelopen weekend kwamen onze schaatsers en schaatssters in actie tijdens de tweede World Cup van het seizoen. In Beijing werd het voor Oranje een lucratief weekendje met vier keer goud, acht keer zilver en vijf bronzen medailles. Bij de mannen werd Jenning de Boo de grote held en bij de vrouwen was het vooral de jonge Angel Daleman die onderwerp van gesprek was. Vanavond zit Suse van Kleef aan de rechterhand van Jeroen!  Twintigjarig schaatstalent Jenning de Boo sluit zijn droomseizoen af met zijn eerste individuele WK-medaille: zilver op de sprint. Na een bizar debuutseizoen, waarin De Boo uitgroeide tot de revelatie van het Nederlandse schaatsen, is er eindelijk tijd om terug te blikken! Vanavond schuift hij aan met coach Gerard van Velde.  Minder bezoek, minder bellen en kranten met de advertenties eruit geknipt. Dit soort maatregelen zouden het contact van zware criminelen als Taghi met de buitenwereld moeten gaan beperken, om te voorkomen dat ze vanuit de cel hun organisaties blijven aansturen. VVD-Kamerlid Ulysse Ellian en advocaat Sander Janssen schuiven aan.  Het is officieel: Jacqueline Govaert gaat het stokje van Jan Smit overnemen als commentator van het Eurovisie Songfestival. Aankomende mei zal de frontvrouw van Krezip naast Cornald Maas plaatsnemen achter de microfoon. Vanavond bespreken we met het kersverse duo waar zij zich het meest op verheugen in Malmö.  José James treedt op! Een nieuw jaar, een nieuw seizoen van de Bureau Sport Podcast! We beginnen 2024 met veel vragen van de luisteraar en Frank vertelt over een ontmoeting met een fan. We blikken terug op het WK Darts, waren de Nederlanders echt zo dramatisch slecht of is het niveau gewoon veel hoger? Jenning de Boo is het nieuwe schaatstalent van Nederland, heerlijk lekker hoe onbevangen hij erin gaat. De heren maken zich wel zorgen over de enkel van Jutta Leerdam. Verder alleen maar lof voor Mathieu van der Poel, antwoord op de vraag of Rafael Nadal niet over z'n houdbaarheidsdatum heen is en een mening van de mannen over de corrupte bedoeling bij Ballon d'Or.

Sportjournalist Diana Kuip, Telegraaf-verslaggever Renze Lolkema en schaatsanalist Erben Wennemars kijken terug op de afgelopen sportweek.

Op de bovenste verdieping van Thialf ontvangen Steven Dalebout, Mark Tuitert en Robbert de Rijk de sensatie van de NK afstanden: Jenning de Boo. Hij verbaast alles en iedereen, mede dankzij een Chinese shorttrackcoach. De mannen van Jumbo-Visma stellen op de NK juist teleur. Mark zoekt een verklaring. En wat is de relatie tussen winnaar De Boo en de man die als laatste eindigde op de kilometer?

Tijdens de derde en laatste dag werden de 10.000 meter bij de mannen, 5000 meter voor vrouwen, de beide 1000 meters en beide Mass Starts verreden. Het was de dag van spektakel op de langste sprintafstand. Jutta Leerdam was oppermachtig en pakte haar vijfde NK-goud op rij én Jenning de Boo, de verrassing van de eerste dag, deed het nog eens dunnetjes over op de laatste dag door ook de 1000 meter te winnen. In het derde dagverslag spreekt Robert Denneman met Jorrit Bergsma, die blij was met zijn zilveren plak op de tien kilometer; Joy Beune, die vriend en vijand verrastte op de vijf kilometer; de beide winnaars van de 1000 meter, Jenning de Boo en Jutta Leerdam; Yves Vergeer, die derde werd bij de Mass Start; en Robin Groot, die weliswaar net naast eremetaal greep, maar wel een fantastisch NK heeft gereden.

Tijdens de eerste dag werden de 5000 meter voor mannen, 1500 meter voor vrouwen en de 500 meter voor mannen verreden. Dé verrassing van de donderdag was toch wel Jenning de Boo van Team Reggeborgh. De 19-jarige Groninger, die dit seizoen voor het eerst bij de senioren rijdt, won beide ritten en dus ook het eindklassement. Daarnaast was er ook feest bij Team IKO. Joy Beune, die veel over zich heen kreeg na het 'transponderincident', liet haar benen spreken en pakte op de 1500 meter haar eerste Nederlandse titel. In het eerste dagverslag spreekt Robert Denneman met alle winnaars (Patrick Roest, Joy Beune en Jenning de Boo) en met Team IKO schaatsers Jesse Speijers, Robin Groot en Sebas Diniz.

More than 30 people were arrested or cited after a huge brawl broke out at a Fourth of July celebration at Romare Bearden Park in Uptown, police announced Wednesday. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings confirmed that of the 32 people who were cited or arrested, 17 were minors. The parents or guardians of 15 arrested minors were cited for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, CMPD said. The suspects are facing numerous charges, including disorderly conduct, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting a public officer, assault on a government official, and possession of a firearm on city property. Jennings said it started when a group of teenagers lit illegal fireworks and started fights. He said some of the suspects were running through the crowd wearing masks, causing panic in the park. Dr. Jennings is Associatet Professor of Systematic Theology and Africana Studies at Yale University and has written several books including The Christian Imagination: Theology and the Origins of Race (Yale 2010), which won the American Academy of Religion Award of Excellence in the Study of Religion in the Constructive-Reflective category the year after it appeared and, in 2015 and the Grawemeyer Award in Religion, the largest prize for a theological work in North America. His commentary on the Book of Acts, titled Acts: A Commentary, The Revolution of the Intimate (for the Belief Series, Westminster/John Knox) received the Reference Book of the Year Award from The Academy of Parish Clergy in 2018.In this episode, Dr. Jenning helps us understand how the book of Acts critiques empire and imperial values, and also how the early Christians in the book of Acts were wrestling with ethnic reconciliation and inclusion. Happy Friday! We couldn't end Women's History Month without an episode with a significant woman in sports history. Special Jennings, Head Girls Basketball Coach at Montverde Academy. 2020-2021 was Jenning's inaugural year as head coach, which filled with many accomplishments. Coach Jennings led the Lady Eagles to a 21-2 record while being ranked #1 in the country for 13 weeks, a record her teams broke 13 times during the regular season. Jennings is no stranger to winning. Starting 115 consecutive games at Xavier University. She is currently tied for fourth in all-time assists for the Musketeers with 515. She also still holds the fifth-place spot in Xavier's all-time free throw percentage at .773. Jennings led the Musketeers to an NCAA "Elite 8" appearance in 2010, four Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament titles, and three other NCAA Tournament appearances. One of the great historical Hollywood mysteries, still unsolved, revolves around the death of silver screen comedienne Thelma Todd. She was found dead in her car on December 16th, 1935, killed by carbon monoxide poisoning according to the Los Angeles coroner. But rumors have circulated for decades that she was murdered, with suspects that have included her live-in boyfriend Roland West, ex-husband Pat DiCicco, and even New York mobster Charles "Lucky" Luciano. My guest today is Pat Jenning, who along with co-author Marshall Croddy authored the book, "Testimony of a Death: Thelma Todd: Mystery, Media and Myth in 1935 Los Angeles". In fact, it's the first guest that ever appeared on the show, way back in Episode 2! He is the voice of Insane Championship Wrestling, a radio host, panto star and, crucially, award winning comedian... It's Billy Kirkwood!  The chosen film? Howard The Duck! A film chosen by listener Lauren McIntyre! In her defence, Lauren said:  "There is only one film that I need to suggest you consider... Willard Huyck's 1986 science fiction extravaganza Howard the Duck!  "Why the fuck would we do that?!" you might ask. Well first off, it's mental. A really horrible looking space duck gets sucked out of his living room (while he's reading an issue of Play Duck) and transported to Earth, where he meets wannabee rock star Beverly. Together they manage to save the Earth from intergalactic demons. What's not to like?  Ok, the tone of the film is all over the shop, the anthropomorphic duck looks fucking horrible (what design ideas got rejected if that's what they chose to use??) and the relationship between Howard and Beverly is pretty weird to say the least. The film was a massive flop on its release but I actually don't think it deserves all the negativity. It's entertaining, the special effects look decent for the films age (a la Ghostbusters, early CG effects mixed with animatronics), and I've certainly seen worse from George Lucas, who famously produced the film. The plot is throwaway, take-your-brain-out fun. And Jeffrey Jones is hilarious as the possessed Dr Jenning, and I actually love the space demons. I'd never argue that this is the best film in the world, but it's certainly not as bad as everyone makes out. . Plus it's arguably part of the Marvel franchise, as Howard is a Marvel character (and i think was in Guardians of the Galaxy?).  So, that's my suggestion. If I was on the podcast, this is what I'd choose."  This one will be a slog. Its a famously reviled film but is the hate deserved? FIND OUT INSIDE!
