In a wide-ranging and deeply personal conversation, Tiffany Yu, CEO and Founder of Diversability, explores the transformational potential of disability advocacy, the importance of representation, and the expansive reach of community-building. As the architect of Diversability—a global community now numbering more than 80,000 individuals—Tiffany has created a platform that empowers disabled individuals and their allies to elevate their voices, dismantle ableist systems, and build collective influence. What began in 2009 as a student-led initiative has grown into a dynamic, multi-sector movement. Inspired by her corporate experiences at Goldman Sachs and Bloomberg, where she first encountered disability employee resource groups, Tiffany saw firsthand how visibility and solidarity within institutions could alter perceptions and influence systems. Diversability not only fosters peer connection but also positions disability identity as a source of pride, resilience, and leadership. Much of the conversation centers on her newly released book, The Anti-Ableist Manifesto, a call to action for disabled and non-disabled readers alike. Through a structured “Me-We-Us” framework, Tiffany makes disability advocacy accessible to all. The manifesto is not simply about compliance with existing legislation—it's about shifting societal mindsets to affirm the inherent value of disabled lives. It's a deeply human appeal that complements legal protections like the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the UK's Equality Act by focusing on hearts and minds, not just policy. Tiffany underscores the economic imperative of inclusion. With over 1.6 billion people globally identifying as disabled and a collective market power exceeding $18 trillion, disability inclusion is not only a moral obligation but a competitive advantage. She cites examples of innovations originally designed for disabled users—such as electric toothbrushes, audiobooks, and ergonomic seating—that have gone on to benefit the broader public. These “curb-cut effects” demonstrate how designing with accessibility in mind fosters universal benefit. The conversation also delves into the structural challenges facing the disability community: fragmentation across geographies, underrepresentation in leadership, and political headwinds threatening essential services. Yet, Tiffany resists despair. She points to disabled entrepreneurs as economic contributors and changemakers, and notes that small businesses led by disabled founders are significantly more likely to hire other disabled people—illustrating how grassroots action can lead to systemic transformation. Brooke holds an empowering conversation with Tiffany Yu, author of the "Anti-Ableism Manifesto" exploring the evolving language around disability, the personal journeys of disabled individuals, and the importance of community and representation. Tiffany shares her experiences of navigating life with both apparent and non-apparent disabilities, reflecting on her childhood before and after her accident. They also delve into the significance of access intimacy, the challenges of identifying as disabled, and the systemic issues surrounding ableism. KEY TAKEAWAYS The experiences of disabled individuals vary widely, influenced by factors such as whether they were born with a disability or acquired it later in life. This diversity emphasises that the disabled community is not a monolith and that each person's relationship with their disability is unique. Language surrounding disability is evolving, and it's important to use terms that accurately reflect individuals' experiences. For example, "non-apparent" disabilities are preferred over "hidden" or "invisible" to avoid implying that individuals are trying to hide their disabilities. The concept of access intimacy refers to the comfort and understanding that comes from being in spaces designed with disabled individuals in mind. This fosters a sense of belonging and allows for more authentic interactions without the need for individuals to justify their access needs. The book "Anti-Ableism Manifesto" is structured around the framework of "Me, We, Us," which encourages individuals to first reflect on their own beliefs about disability (Me), then engage with their community (We), and finally advocate for broader societal change (Us). This approach emphasises the importance of both personal and collective action in combating ableism. BEST MOMENTS "I identify as having both apparent and non-apparent disabilities." "I think we are on the cusp of a cultural shift around disability." "Ableism is a system of oppression that devalues someone based on the way their body and or mind works." "Just because you've met one disabled person doesn't mean that you've met the entire disabled community." "I wanted the book to read as though a friend was talking to you." Show notes: https://www.tamihackbarth.com/blog/episode-253 In this week's podcast episode I am sharing my interview with Tiffany Yu. Tiffany Yu is the CEO & Founder of Diversability, a 3x TEDx speaker, and the author of The Anti-Ableist Manifesto: Smashing Stereotypes, Forging Change, and Building a Disability-Inclusive World.  Tiffany started her career at Goldman Sachs before becoming a speaker and writer on disability.  At the age of 9, Tiffany became disabled as a result of a car accident that also took the life of her father.  Inspired by the viral The Anti-Ableism Series on TikTok, The Anti-Ableist Manifesto is Diversability founder Tiffany Yu's revelatory examination of disability for any ally to go beyond mere awareness to be an active anti-ableist and help form a more equitable society for all. Not going to lie, I devoured this book! After spending countless hours advocating for my daughter over the years, especially in the education system, this was a perfect guidebook to helping non disabled people advocate for inclusion, access and belonging for all students. If you know someone who has had to advocate for themselves or a family member in the health, education or employment systems, definitely share this book. If you'd like to learn how to be an ally to the disabled community, definitely read this book.

There are SO many insightful conversations and incredible stories we've shared on this show, and this one was yet another example of one where we went in thinking one thing, and came out thinking another.  Because we'll be talking with an incredible advocate about ableism and disabilities - a label that, if we aren't already impacted by it, is a label that - statistically speaking - we may all one day live long enough to be impacted by. We all want to be paying attention.   And maybe, just maybe, if you learn through this episode that the way you thought about ability and disability is different than what you previously assumed, maybe, just maybe, you'll also be open to learning more about race and racism, age and ageism, sex and sexism, anti LGBTQIA+ sentiment, and more.  All of these systems of oppression are linked. And we're so glad that we were able to be in community with someone that we personally know is such a powerful woman in this space for this discussion. What to listen for:  Tiffany's personal journey, and the importance of disability inclusion Some significant stats and perspective - including that 61 million Americans, or one in four adults, have disabilities, making it the largest minority group The "me, we, us" framework to address personal unlearning and systemic change Practical shifts from ableist language – such as "suffering from" to "living with" disabilities The importance of supporting disabled individuals' livelihoods, including the need for inclusive hiring practices, the impact of accessibility on product design, and advocating for a culture that values vulnerability and support About our guest: Tiffany Yu is the CEO & Founder of Diversability, an award-winning social enterprise to elevate disability pride, the Founder of the Awesome Foundation Disability Chapter, and the author of The Anti-Ableist Manifesto: Smashing Stereotypes, Forging Change, and Building a Disability-Inclusive World. Send us a textTiffany Yu (@iamtiffanyyu) speaker/leader and author of THE ANTI-ABLEIST MANIFESTO, did not find her voice to claim and honor her own disabilities until age 21. In this slightly-off subject interview with THE SOULFAM PODCAST, Tiffany relates her struggle and commitment to raise awareness, respect and equity for those challenged with physical disabilities as well as those whose disabilities are often invisible to a caustic, busy world (ie. neurodivergence, anxiety, depression, medical conditions, autism.) At age 9, Yu became disabled in a car accident that also took the life of her father. For 12 years afterward, influenced by her cultural background as the daughter of Asian immigrants, Yu did not talk publicly about the car accident, told everyone her father was away on a trip, and attempted to “hide” her disabled arm. Not until she was in college and began dating did she openly share the truth of her experience and the loss of her father. Yu was a “top bucket” (based on performance reviews) investment banking analyst at Goldman Sachs, and she cofounded Bloomberg's disability employee resource group. Since the founding of Diversability in 2009, Yu has been on a mission to increase access and opportunity in the disability community, investing over $300,000 in the disability community through her work at Diversability, the Awesome Foundation Disability Chapter, and the Disability Empowerment Endowed Fund at Georgetown University. Tiffany talks further about recognizing and honoring the grief of her disability and encourages her community to do the same. Understanding her own trauma and evolution is ongoing process and one Tiffany willingly shares on THE SOULFAM PODCAST. Hello Brave Friends! On this Thriving Disabled Adults episode, #193, we are speaking to Thriving Disabled Adult, Tiffany Yu, who at age nine, was in a car accident that left her right arm permanently paralyzed, and also took the life of her father.I think you're going to love this interview. Tiffany is so open about her courageous journey from the accident to finding her voice and community as a disabled person. She also has a lot to say about what it felt like to be in therapies and treatments for her brachial plexus injury. And in contrast to all those therapies, what it felt like when the initial support went away, and she was left, without an IEP, trying her best to fit in as a newly disabled person, in an ableist school system and world. She is now an incredible disability advocate who started a disability centered community called Diversability. She is also a content creator (check out her Anti-Ableist series on TikTok) and she has a book coming out on disability inclusion called The Anti-Ableist Manifesto. I promise after this interview you are going to be clamoring to check out all of her world-changing content. Thank you to everyone who showed up in person or participated virtually in our 5k fundraiser! This episode of “B The Way Forward” brings the ideas of intersectional inclusivity and visibility to the forefront. Host Brenda Darden Wilkerson speaks with disability rights advocate, Tiffany Yu, about moving disability inclusion forward and why finding community is so important. Did you know that there are an estimated one billion people with disabilities worldwide? This statistic drives Tiffany's important work, particularly as the CEO and Founder of her company, Diversability. In this episode, you'll hear some of Tiffany's own personal experiences, including where her story began at the age of 9 when she became disabled as a result of a car accident that took her father's life. Now, she's become a powerful voice and trailblazer for the disability community and is author of her new book, “The Anti-Ableist Manifesto: Smashing Stereotypes, Forging Change, and Building a Disability-Inclusive World.” Brenda and Tiffany discuss why inclusion needs to be intentional and how representation in books and movies is a powerful tool for change – they even talk about Barbie! Tiffany's powerful message will leave our listeners feeling inspired and confident to challenge the norms and make a change.  "One of the things we talk about in the disability community is we don't like being seen as inspiring just because we exist as disabled people. But, if I can inspire you to take action and change the trajectory of your career to fight for disability equity, I'm all about that type of inspiration." Join me and journalist Stacey Lindsay on today's show to talk about how women can second guess themselves when it comes to asking questions and being curious. It's not entirely the fault of the female race! The patriarchy has kept women from asking challenging and different questions for ages. Women have been afraid of what will happen when they act outside the box, and that has fed into a universal lack of self-trust. Stacey Lindsay has written for many popular outlets as a journalist and reporter, including holding the position of Senior Editor for Maria Shriver's Sunday Paper and editorial director of September Letters, a mental health advocacy platform (https://septemberletters.com/) created by Jaspre Guest and Brittany Snow. Over the course of her career, she has learned how to ask the questions she feels most curious about in her stories and discovered a new level of intimacy with her subjects. At a press junket, she deviates from the standard questioning of a celebrity and discovers they have a shared narrative about grief. Women writers and journalists that have inspired her include Anna Quinn and Sharyn Alfonsi. Knowing she wants to write a book, we explore what makes someone a writer, and how unknown it can be just how hard writing is. But if you have that longing and desire to put a voice to the page, you can push through and write a book that has an impact out into the world. You can read more about Stacey at staceyannlindsay.com. If you enjoyed this show, may we suggest other similar episodes you may like?
