Classical music is rooted in rich history, formality, and tradition - but does the musicians' concert attire still have to be? Blackstrad founder and professional flutist Mercedes Smith thinks it is time for a change of pace in performance wardrobes. In episode 110, hear how she is designing new concert black attire that resonates with the individuality of modern musicians while keeping the harmony of a unified ensemble. Mercedes Smith has served as the Principal Flutist of the Utah Symphony since 2012, having previously held the same position with the Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet Orchestras. She has performed in Carnegie Hall, throughout Europe and Asia, and at renowned music festivals including the Grand Teton Music Festival, Tanglewood, Music Academy of the West, Verbier Festival Orchestra, and Marlboro. Top-tier flutist talks her career as a studio musician in Hollywood and her many collaborations with John Williams on such legendary scores as Hook, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, The BFG, and many others Hosted by Maurizio Caschetto Geraldine Rotella is unquestionably one of the most heard flutists in the world. In a career now spanning five decades, she performed as a freelance on many studio recordings in Los Angeles, thus becoming one of the first-call studio musicians working in the area. She's also Principal Flutist for the Los Angeles Master Chorale and the Assistant Principal/Piccolo for the Pasadena Symphony. Geri Rotella performed on thousands of session dates for film and television soundtracks, playing for some of Hollywood's most acclaimed composers including John Williams, for whom he's the piccolo player since 1990 and performed on such legendary scores as Hook, Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, The Lost World, Amistad, The Patriot, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Minority Report, Catch Me If You Can, Memoirs of a Geisha, War of the Worlds, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Adventures of Tintin, War Horse, The Book Thief, The BFG and the Star Wars sequel trilogy. She can be often heard playing high-pitched notes in the piccolo during the action scenes of those films (the Velociraptor sequences in the Jurassic Park movies being some of the trickiest she ever performed), but also performed a lot beautiful lyrical alto flute parts. In this conversation, Geri Rotella talks her illustrious career as a studio musician in Hollywood, highlighting her family heritage and unique musical upbringing, the mentorship she received from Sheridon Stokes and Louise Di Tullio, and her many collaborations with John Williams throughout the years. Geri recollects the unforgettable experiences playing on such scores as Hook, Jurassic Park, The BFG and Indiana Jones among others, reflecting on Williams' flute writing and also at his skills as a communicator on the podium. If you want to live a life of unlimited joy, follow these simple Atonement steps based on teachings from A Course in Miracles. (Do try this at home!) Learn how to surrender to your Higher Power and live to laugh about it. Through application, discover that healing and forgiveness are identical. When repressed fears rise to the surface, recognize that “problems” are really forgiveness opportunities. Give them to the Light. Only your willingness is necessary.  Our forgiveness is our healing. Our forgiveness is sent forth to bless people whose current circumstances resemble those we formerly judged. We get to see our old storylines from the Christ point of view. That's how we know we are healed. It is a miracle. It's a testimony to the Love of God. There are Miracle workers blessing you every day. You will be given as much help as you are willing to receive. Your part will unfold in miraculous ways that you can't plan because you can't see the Whole. By allowing your mind to return to the wholeness of love, you will be available to serve the whole. You will be an instrument of blessing for the world. Wait, listen, and follow. You are on a Mission from God. You cannot fail because of Who is in Charge. Only your willingness is necessary and only what Unlimited Love would have you do is possible. – writes Pamela Valeria interviews Pamela Whitman.
