It sort of became a prerequisite to functioning normally and being productive. Otherwise there is no other way to achieve whatever level of success unless you have that built into your psyche. Also your ability to focus on the task at hand. Some people just do it intuitively. They don't need Yoga or Tai Chi; they just have mindfulness set in their brains. As a result, when they are in stressful situations or they anticipate stressful situations, their mind just sticks to the task at hand. I'm not one of those people. I need those tools we've been talking about. Music is also one of those tools. Thoughts On Breathing Deep breathing is very challenging for me because I get lightheaded very easily. That's something that takes a lot of practice. I'm on a very specific high-calorie nutritional diet that works in tandem with deep breathing exercises. Bullying Story So sadly I think way more people than we even know worry about bullying. Thankfully I've managed to probably wipe out of my memory any scenarios where I may have been bullied and I've just sort of moved on in life.   I do distinctly remember a couple of situations where there were individuals that bullied me in Middle School a couple of different situations.   I was pushed up against the locker actually. It was in fourth grade and I just kind of pretended it was nothing. I just sort of brushed it off and they laughed. I walked away, I went to the bathroom, went into the stall, and I just started crying. Obviously, it took a major toll on me because I remember it so many years later. I got over it, and I just had to move on and go to class. Those types of scenarios are very harmful and very hurtful. How many of us have played an instrument at one time or another? As a school kid, as a high schooler, cover band, original band? Most of us have had some sort of experience musically good or bad. So all of you should be able to relate to this episode's guest who has been classically trained around the world and found, pound for pound, one of the best orchestras in the US right here in Buffalo. That's why he's worked with the Grammy award winning and one of the most recorded philharmonics in the world, the BPO, since 1998. He's been in every kind of band including yes, marching. Walking and chewing gum are hard for some. How about marching in a choreographed maneuver while playing a difficult song. we discuss it. His stories are awesome as we explore the inside workings of a professional orchestra. We even talk about band camp. :) He played at my wedding as my bride walked down the aisle and is one of the most accomplished musicians in Buffalo. So, parents of kids who play, listen. He's got suggestions for you. Laugh and learn lots! Thanks for watching, enjoy, like, subscribe, and share. As always thank you!

In this episode, I discuss with solo violinist Arnaud Sussmann.  He elaborates on the mindsets and strategies to adopt when working on sound quality, the importance of having a strong concept of phrasing and of bow distribution in musicality, the importance of creating fluency in his playing and how he achieves it, the importance of purpose in our practice, warming up during busy periods, the value of recording ourselves when we practice, and why he believes it's important to work hard. MORE ABOUT ARNAUD SUSSMAN: Website: http://arnaudsussmann.com/ YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/violinice Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/arnaudsussmannviolin/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/arnaudsussmann/ Boris Garlitsky: http://www.talentmusicmasters.it/boris-garlitsky   Winner of a 2009 Avery Fisher Career Grant, Arnaud Sussmann has distinguished himself with his unique sound, bravura and profound musicianship. JoAnn Falletta is celebrating her 20th anniversary as Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, so we've gotta give her a shout out with this old gold from the Classroom vault! By the way, did you know that a 2014 survey found that in a list of the 150 top conductors in the world, only five were women? New episode topic? --------- Who was Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and why does he have two last names? And why would a 19th century Russian composer write a symphonic poem based on a collection of West and South Asian folk tales written in Arabic in the 16th century? What does it all mean?? Most* of these questions and more are all answered within by Buffalo Philharmonic/Virginia Symphony Orchestra conductor, guitarist, music advocate, and all around amazing lady, JoAnn Falletta. Music in this episode from the Buffalo Philharmonic’s recording of Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Sheherazade,” conducted by JoAnn Falletta. I'm very excited to have the talented, brilliant, funny, and (as you'll see) engaging Tessa Lark to the show to talk to us about joy in practice and music-making!  In this episode, we discuss her views about tackling work with the right mindset, the ways she sparks joy in her practice, and how getting in that joyful headspace not only makes it more gratifying for her, but also helps increase her productivity! I've been thinking a lot about Joy, self-compassion, and using positive self-talk in practicing and performing for the past few years and I ended up researching that topic in the context of my doctoral studies: the idea that high quality work can flow more easily when we are in the right mindset, the right disposition.  High-level results stem out of high-level thinking and solutions to problems come more easily when we're in a positive and open state of mind.  It is absolutely possible to have rigor without rigidity in the practice room! I had a wonderful time talking with Tessa about this topic that's really close to my heart! I feel like it's a way to approach practicing that can be very impactful and I hope this episode affects your next practice session in a positive way! We elaborate on: Her childhood in the foothills of Kentucky, starting with the Suzuki Method and enjoying attending Marc O'Connor's fiddle camps How she was introduced to fiddle music and blue grass and how it stays with her to this day Her experience with the The Cincinnati Starling Project in Cincinnati, studying with Kurt Sassmannshaus How she met and went on to study with Miriam Fried in Boston, and how Ms Fried helped her develop artistic integrity How the Naumburg Competition helped launch her career Practicing in ways that spark joy – searching for “things in your practice that bring you joy, as opposed to looking for all the things you're doing “horribly” wrong” The “talent” misunderstanding The misconception that “hard work” should feel “hard” Why we need to aim for “focused” and “efficient” work and, YES, that can feel good! Getting into the “joyful headspace” How struggle can be part of the process but its' not “necessary” How emotional depth can also be reached from a positive headspace and mindset Increased productivity How while joy is not a neutral feeling, the process to get there can be neutral The importance of knowing yourself and knowing what can get you to this joyful headspace The importance of setting goals, a positive mindset, reduce distractions, and find a physical space that feels inspiring and is conducive to efficient work How the language we use with ourselves is so important How mental discipline is important and can help us negotiate the variables that can affect performance How she uses a timer in her practice to improve her productivity   More about Tessa: Website: https://www.tessalark.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tessalark/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tessa.lark/ YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/HBOfosho YouTube videos featuring Tessa: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=tessa+lark More articles about Tessa: click here   The Cincinnati Starling Project: http://www.starling.org/cincinnati-starling-project Kurt Sassmannshaus / Violin Masterclass: http://violinmasterclass.com/en Kenny Werner Effortless Mastery: Liberating the Master Musician: https://kennywerner.com/effortless-mastery   Biography   Violinist Tessa Lark, recipient of a 2018 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship and a 2016 Avery Fisher Career Grant, Silver Medalist in the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, and winner of the 2012 Naumburg International Violin Competition, is one of the most captivating artistic voices of our time. A budding superstar in the classical realm, she is also a highly acclaimed fiddler in the tradition of her native Kentucky. Since making her concerto debut with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra at sixteen, Ms. Lark has appeared with dozens of orchestras, festivals, and recital venues including Carnegie Hall, Ravinia, San Francisco Performances, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw, the Buffalo Philharmonic, and Marlboro Music. Highlights of her 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons included multiple performances of two works for violin and orchestra written for her: Love Letter by bassist-composer Michael Thurber, and Sky, a bluegrass-inspired concerto by Michael Torke premiered and recorded with the Albany (NY) Symphony Orchestra. Additional recording projects include a fantasia-themed album including Ms. Lark's own Appalachian Fantasy and works by Telemann, Ravel, Kreisler, and Schubert; Invention, a debut album of the violin-bass duo Tessa Lark & Michael Thurber that comprises music of J.S. Bach along with non-classical original compositions; and a genre-bending disc in collaboration with such artists as multi-instrumentalist/composer Jon Batiste and American fiddling legend Michael Cleveland. Recent and upcoming activities include Australia's Musica Viva festival—a four-concert engagement highlighted by a duo collaboration with bassist/composer Edgar Meyer—and debuts with the Seattle and Indianapolis symphonies. Scheduled for May 2020 is a Lincoln Center recital debut on its prestigious Great Performers Series. Ms. Lark is a graduate of New England Conservatory with an Artist Diploma from The Juilliard School. She plays a ca. 1600 G.P. Listen now as Roger Nierenberg explains how The Music Paradigm helps you see your organization with fresh eyes!   We are delighted to have with us today Roger Nierenberg, an exceptional conductor and innovator who has taken his musical passion and skills and become a “go-to” inspiration for businesses. Through the metaphor of music, Maestro Nierenberg helps organizations “see, feel and think” about themselves with fresh eyes. Quite amazing. Very anthropological, which as you know, is right up our alley! Wait til you hear—and I mean hear—this pioneering musical genius.   A Unique Learning Experience for Any Type of Organization  What Roger Nierenberg and I discuss in this podcast is the way in which music, and the performance of music, can often be seen as a foreign culture but can also be a powerful metaphor for the organizations in which we work, or work with. As Roger describes his experiences conducting orchestras all over the world, he shares with us how during each performance, the musicians are listening, understanding, sharing, visualizing and changing their performances, not so much in response to him but to each other. Through Roger's descriptions, we too can see our own methods of interacting with others more clearly by watching performers collaborate in a musical experience. It isn’t because they are just talented performers. Rather, they have learned how to work together to bring out each one's skills and create an amazing performance. Might this apply to your organization? The Music Paradigm Through Roger's experiences engaging with community businesses and civic leaders, he became curious about the challenges and opportunities faced by organizations in times of rapid change. Again, right up our alley—at SAMC we're all about change. He realized how crucial issues of organizational development could be powerfully brought to life within an orchestra. Thus was born The Music Paradigm, a highly effective learning experience that uses symphonic music to illuminate compelling insights about people at work. Participants are seated directly among the orchestra musicians, observing them as they perform. Up close, they see fascinating and unexpected organizational dynamics taking place within the group. It soon becomes clear that this is not a demonstration but a powerful forum where observers gain fresh understanding about the opportunities and challenges faced by their own organization. Over the past 20 years, Roger has presented The Music Paradigm to hundreds of different organizations, from civic groups to Fortune 500 companies, in 23 different countries. He explains many of the lessons learned in his book, "Maestro: A Surprising Story About Leading by Listening," which was honored in 2009 as the Best Leadership Book from 800-CEO-READ.  Andy and I are both fans of philharmonic concerts and we find The Music Paradigm to be really quite amazing. It allows you to bring something that often is not well attended (symphony orchestra performances) into your workplace as a magical method for improving your team, your organization, your relationships with clients, and your culture.  Who is Roger Nierenberg?  Maestro Roger Nierenberg made his New York conducting debut at Avery Fisher Hall with the Pro Arte Chorale and Orchestra, and soon thereafter was invited to conduct operas in two successive seasons at the Mostly Mozart Festival at New York’s Lincoln Center. Numerous guest conducting engagements followed with many of the great American symphony orchestras, including those of Austin, Baltimore, Charleston, Columbus, Detroit, Indianapolis, Kansas City, New Jersey, San Diego, St. Louis and Utah, as well as New York’s American Symphony Orchestra, Washington D.C.’s National Symphony Orchestra, the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Abroad, Roger has recorded with the London Philharmonic and conducted at both the Prague Spring Festival with the Czech Radio Orchestra and the Beijing  Festival with the Shanghai Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra. Other performances include engagements with the London Mozart Players, Mexico’s National Symphony Orchestra, the Nova Scotia Symphony and the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra.  Roger has appeared at numerous summer festivals, including the Tanglewood Institute, the Grand Teton Music Festival, the Colorado Festival, the National Repertory Orchestra and the Madeira Bach Festival. He has also collaborated with many of the most renowned solo artists and composers of our time. Conductor JoAnn Falletta talks with radio host Peter Hall about her recording of Respighi’s Roman Trilogy, her 24th release for Naxos with the Buffalo Philharmonic. Respighi’s tone poems employ a large symphony orchestra and use a myriad of effects to take the listener through time, space and musical styles. The resultant portraits of Roman festivals, fountains and pine trees are both brilliant and unprecedented. Colour and imagination are central to the cinematic vibrancy that underpins Respighi’s magnificent orchestral kaleidoscope of aspects of Rome, both ancient and modern.

Zoltán Kodály wrote major orchestral scores that were deeply enriched by his researches into Hungarian folk music, not least the heritage of gypsy music. The recording’s programme comprises Dances of Galánta and Dances of Marosszék, both full of swagger and vitality; the lush and sparkling Concerto for Orchestra, commissioned by the Chicago Symphony for its 50th anniversary; and Variations on a Hungarian Folk Song ‘The Peacock’, a virtuoso showcase of sizzling effects.

Meet Dale Henderson (described by Yo-Yo Ma as “a very gifted musician, a natural cellist”) on Sept. 4th when he and distinguished pianist William Chapman Nyaho will be performing the three Bach da Gamba Sonatas at Bloedel Reserve. Weather permitting, the concert will be outside at the Visitor's Center. This is the grand finale of the Bloedel summer concert series. Admission will be at 6 pm (not earlier). Picnicking will be allowed, and alcoholic beverages may be purchased at Bloedel only (please do not bring your own). In 2010, acclaimed cellist Dale Henderson took his passion for Bach's music to the masses by playing Bach's cello suites in the New York City subways, believing that this might re-energize widespread love for Bach and classical music. He did this again, year after year, just for the love of Bach. For Bach's 326th birthday on March 21, 2011, Dale invited other musicians to join him - and the “Bach in the Subways movement” was born. “In 2015 thousands of musicians in 150 cities in 40 countries offered Bach's music freely to the public in subway stations, train stations, on moving trains, on street corners, in cafés, malls, restaurants, zoos, and concerts open to all. More Bach was played and heard in a single day than ever before in history.” In this podcast, Dale tells BCB about what compelled him to play the Bach cello suites in the subway, and how he continues to be fueled by his passion for bringing Bach to the public. The da Gamba Sonatas, while less well known than the cello suites, inspire him with the nuanced and sensitive interplay between cello and piano. Dale has performed as a chamber musician, soloist, and orchestra cellist, and made his professional solo debut at the age of 13 with the Buffalo Philharmonic. He is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, and attended the International Menuhin Music Academy in Gstaad, Switzerland. Nyaho is a Ghanaian American who has studied music at Oxford University (UK), Conservatoire de Musique de Geneve, Switzerland, the Eastman School of Music, and University of Texas where he received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree. He performs as soloist with various orchestras, including the Moscow Chamber Orchestra and the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra. Dale and Nyaho began collaborating last year, sharing their passion for performing Bach. Also joining us for this BCB podcast is Bloedel's Programs and Events Manager, Shayla Miles, who chose this Bach program for the culmination of the summer concert series. Tickets can be purchased at the Bloedel Reserve website. BCB apologizes for some background noise on this skype recording. We are featuring double bassist Gaelen McCormick on today’s episode. Gaelen is a member of the Rochester Philharmonic, teaches at Nazareth College and the Eastman Community Music School and is the author of Mastering the Bow, a two-part series for bass. Part one is based on the violin studies of Franz Wohlfahrt, and part two features off-the-strings strokes. We had a wonderful conversation about her early years in music, studying with Jeff Turner for graduate school (and you can listen to Jeff on the podcast—he was a guest back on episode 26), structuring practice time, the George Vance Progressive Repertoire series, and many other topics. Before and after the interview, we feature Gaelen and Ed Paulsen performing a couple of Dave Anderson’s wonderful duets, and you can check out our interview with Dave on episode 75 of the podcast. About Gaelen: Ms. McCormick has been a member of the Rochester Philharmonic’s bass section since 1995. Before joining the RPO, she held positions with regional orchestras such as the Erie (PA) Philharmonic, the Binghamton Philharmonic and the Albany Symphony. Ms. McCormick has performed regularly with other major orchestras, including the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Syracuse Symphony. She holds degrees in performance from the Eastman School and Carnegie Mellon University. Teaching the double bass to students of all ages has become a significant part of Gaelen’s life. She joined the faculty of Nazareth College in 2010, and has been the bass instructor for the Eastman Community Music School since 2001. She enjoys working with talented high school aged string players in the summer at Eastman’s Music Horizons program where she teaches chamber music and gives bass lessons. In 2003, she was invited to teach for the year at Duquesne University’s City Music Center, a program for talented, pre-college students. Gaelen has given masterclasses and recitals at Ithaca College, Williams College, the College of St. Rose, and Roberts Wesleyan College. In 2013, she gave classes on double bass technique at both the International Society of Bassists convention in Rochester and the NYSSMA Winter Conference. “Mastering the Bow”, the first of three books on double bass bow technique, was published by Carl Fischer in 2013, and the second will be published during the 2014 season. Playing chamber music has been a passion for Ms. McCormick. Before moving to Rochester, she often performed with the St. Cecilia Chamber Orchestra (Albany, NY) as their sole bassist. During her tenure in Pittsburgh, she became the founding bassist of the Pittsburgh Live Music Chamber Orchestra. She was the founding member of the innovative string quintet “Gibbs and Main”, and recorded a cd of tango standards with them, and commissioned a new work for the ensemble by Judd Greenstein. In recent summers, she has been performing with the Music in the Mountains chamber orchestra, a festival based in Durango, Colorado. She is frequently invited to play chamber music with musicians from around the country in festivals such as the Roycroft Chamber Music Festival and the Syracuse New Music Ensemble. This summer, Ms. McCormick will make her debut appearance at the Canandaigua Lake Chamber Music Festival. Gaelen has been involved in volunteering and arts advocacy, and is proud to be the representative for the RPO in the International Conference of Symphony and Opera Musicians. She is honored to be a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Kappa Lambda, groups recognizing and supporting excellence in the humanities and in music specifically. In her spare time, Gaelen enjoys kayaking, Argentine tango and West Coast swing dancing, and spending time with her toddler Clara.
