Continuing the Tom Clark interviews Tom Clark series, we have commissioner of the Pro Bowlers Association (PBA) Tom Clark. He has been the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour Commissioner since 2011, and with the PBA since 2008. He was the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Vice President of Marketing from 2005-2008. Before working in bowling, he was a sportswriter and assignment editor at USA TODAY. Tom is from Syracuse, NY, has resided in Virginia and North Carolina, and lives near Milwaukee with his wife Kelli and two kids. Daughter Quinn is about to start grad school at Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism and son Rory is set to attend and bowl for University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Rory carries a 228 average with a 300 game. The PBA, established in 1958, is the highest level of professional bowling in the world, with the best players and events in the sport, awarding millions of dollars in prize money each year and seen regularly on FOX Sports and CBS Sports Network. This June 15-20, the PBA will be live on FS1 with the "King of the Lanes" series. Visit PBA.com for more information. Coming up on the Inside the OC podcast, one of the sport's do-it-all guys drops by to talk bowling, equipment, preparation and winning. Vernon Peterson is a 2013 Regular Team champion at the #USBCOpen, and he moonlights as ball reviewer for Bowlers Journal International.
Before two-handed bowling was so popular, Jim Cripps had the market cornered on non-traditional deliveries. He turned heads at the #USBCOpen in 2005 and has been an AMAZING ambassador for the sport and OC ever since. His passion for bowling is unmatched. On this episode of the Inside the OC podcast we talk with The Backwards Bowler!
Former Team USA member and 2011 Team All-Events champion (and past USBC President) Andrew Cain joins the show to talk about a variety of OC and non-OC related topics. The talented left-hander has built an incredible legacy on and off the lanes!
On this episode of the Inside the OC podcast we learn about North Carolina's Chris Hans. Hans is a proprietor, pro shop operator and hard-working team captain. He's also preparing for his 20th #USBCOpen appearance.
Rob Glaser is best known as the founder and CEO of RealNetworks, the Seattle-based company that specializes in digital media, games and computer vision technology. But for about two decades, he was also part of the ownership group for the Professional Bowlers Association, along with his former Microsoft colleagues Chris Peters and Mike Slade. That's how Glaser landed in the PBA Hall of Fame earlier this year, despite never having been a pro bowler himself. It also makes Glaser the answer to what turned out to be a real stumper of a trivia question on the latest episode of the GeekWire Podcast. As part of our regular tech trivia contest for listeners, we asked, "Which current CEO of a Seattle tech company has been inducted into the hall of fame of a professional sport?" We received lots of guesses, but only one right answer. So we decided to call Glaser up and get his bowling backstory for this special bonus episode of the podcast. We also talked about RealNetworks' new MaskCheck app, which uses computer vision to detect whether people are wearing masks properly in compliance with public health guidelines. Congrats to our contest winner Isaac Alexander, who will receive a GeekWire mask and mug as his prize. We'll be back this weekend, Saturday, Dec. 26, with a special year-in-review episode of the GeekWire Podcast with guest commentator Ed Lazowska, University of Washington computer science professor. It's a bowling triple feature, and we're thrilled for two reason: firstly, it means we get to check in with our sports desk correspondant Nicole Vettese! And secondly, it means we never have to talk about bowling games again! The games this week run the gamut, from blandly inoffensive to actively awful, but hey, we had a good time talking about it. Wes Newell, Newell Industries Wes Newell was founder of Newell Industries, a company that produced a number of popular hardware upgrades for the Atari 8-bit computers. Products included Fastchip, which sped up floating point routines by 300%; Omniview, which provided 80-column text output; and RAMrod, which provided memory upgrades and enhanced ROMs; and Omnimon, a hardware monitor. Wes was also author of Pro Bowling, which was published by Atari Program Exchange. This interview took place on June 9, 2016. After our interview, Wes sent me his collection of Newell Industries paper: documentation for every product that they released, and a large collection of printed source code for Atari 8-bit and ST products. He generously placed all of the Newell Industries material in the public domain. I've digitized all of it: you can now find it at the Internet Archive (see the links in the show notes at AtariPodcast.com.)
