All he wanted in this unprecedented, unheard of, crazy cruel spiritual journey is for someone to give him a break! The tumultuous pharmacy career finally catches up with louie, and no one is willing to give him another chance or a break. Louie ends up a washed-up pharmacist, and he's ready to give up his fight, until something crazy happens in the final round.I grew up in Burlington, Wisconsin, and I have a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and took prepharmacy courses at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. In How the News Feels: The Empathic Power of Literary Journalists (University of Massachusetts Press, 2023), Jonathan D. Fitzgerald examines a mode of journalistic storytelling dating back nearly two centuries. Literary journalism arose in the decades before the U.S. Civil War alongside the era's sentimental literature. Combining fact-based reporting with the sentimentality of popular fiction, literary journalism encouraged readers to empathize with subjects by presenting more nuanced and engaging stories than typical news coverage. While women writers were central to the formation and ongoing significance of the genre, literary journalism scholarship has largely ignored their contributions. How the News Feels re-centers the work of a range of writers who were active from the 1830s until today, including Catharine Williams, Margaret Fuller, Nellie Bly, Winifred Black, Zora Neale Hurston, Joan Didion, Adrian Nicole LeBlanc, and Alexis Okeowo. Offering intimate access to their subjects' thoughts, motivations, and yearnings, these journalists encouraged readers to empathize with society's outcasts, from asylum inmates and murder suspects to "fallen women" and the working poor. As this carefully researched study shows, these writers succeeded in defining and developing the genre of literary journalism, with stories that inspire action, engender empathy, and narrow the gap between writer, subject, and audience. In this book, Paul A. Thomas—a seasoned Wikipedia contributor who has accrued about 60,000 edits since he started editing in 2007—breaks down the history of the free encyclopedia and explains the process of becoming an editor. Now a newly minted Ph.D. and a library specialist at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, he outlines the many roles a Wikipedia editor can fill. Some editors fix typographical errors, add facts and citations, or clean up the prose on existing articles; others create new articles on topics they find interesting. In Inside Wikipedia: How It Works and How You Can Be an Editor (Rowman & Littlefield, 2022), Thomas goes behind the familiar Wikipedia article page and looks at the unique brand of collaboration that is constantly at work to expand and improve this global resource. James Kates is a professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Not all talent buyers are nice guys. To be honest, it's a profession that seems to attract more than its fair share of bastards. But that's not the case with our good buddy Marc Solheim — who went from being a welcome fixture on the Milwaukee concert scene to being a big-cheese booker for Chicago's own Riot Fest without ever losing an ounce of his good humored charm (not to mention a single strand of his famously perfect hair). In fact, the guy's filled with so much goodwill that he actually attended Local H's very first show (at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1990) and years later he was STILL willing to book the band. Anyway — on this episode we talk to Marc about serving food to Mark Slaughter at Alpine Valley, Stevie Ray Vaughan's last show, flyering for “Jesus Christ Superstar”, working at The Rave, shows at The Unicorn, Corey Feldman's bodyguard, Wesley Willis and The Frogs, Walter Schreifels' three-peat weekend, vegan chimichangas, what goes into organizing a world class music festival, and a WHAT'S THE BEST?!? with Riot Fest headliners The Cure.

On February 21, 1943, Pan American Airways' celebrated seaplane—the Yankee Clipper—took off from New York and island-hopped its way across the Atlantic Ocean. Arriving at Lisbon the following evening, it crashed in the Tagus River, killing twenty-four of its thirty-nine passengers and crew.  In her new book, Americans in a World at War: Intimate Histories from the Crash of Pan Am's Yankee Clipper (Oxford UP, 2023), author Brooke L. Blower traces the backstories of seven worldly Americans aboard that plane, their personal histories, their politics, and the paths that led them toward war. This vivid narrative captures the dramatic stories of these seven people and, through them, the impact of Americans' global connections before and during World War II. Long before GIs began storming beaches and liberating towns, Americans had forged extensive political, economic, and personal ties to other parts of the world. These deep and sometimes contradictory engagements, which preceded the bombing of Pearl Harbor, would shape and in turn be transformed by the U.S. war effort. The intriguing biographies of the Yankee Clipper's passengers—among them an Olympic-athlete-turned-export-salesman, a Broadway star, and two entrepreneurs accused of trading with the enemy—upend conventional American narratives about World War II. Americans in a World at War offers fresh perspectives on a transformative period of U.S. history and global connections during the “American Century.” Brooke L.
