I used to think something was wrong with me. I'd sit there knowing a task mattered — knowing it mattered yesterday, last week, last month — and still couldn't get myself to move on it. For years I asked myself the wrong question: why isn't this getting done? The better question, it turns out, is what does my brain actually need to get started? That question changed everything, and it's where SPARK came from.Story. I'm a story person. I don't care that a bird exists — I care about the three hours I spent finding it. When I'm stuck on a task, I ask what's interesting about it, not what needs to get done. Curiosity creates momentum that obligation never will.Purpose. Abstract tasks mean nothing until there's a real person on the other side of them. Whether it's an IT ticket or a podcast episode that isn't coming together, I think about who actually needs this and why — and the task shifts even though the work doesn't.Adventure. Not everything can be an adventure (folding laundry is still folding laundry), but a lot of tasks can become small experiments instead of obligations. Possibility is motivating in a way duty never is.Reality. This one needs care, because it's easy to slide from reality into fear. Fear says you'll end up broken and miss out on life. Reality says every choice is a small vote for the future you're building. I'd rather feed the tiger that's still hiking at 80 than the one that isn't.Kickstart. Some days none of the above works. On those days, the only question that matters is: what's the smallest next possible step? Mow the front yard, not the whole lawn. Put on your shoes, not your whole workout. Starting is the hard part — once you start, momentum tends to take over. You don't need all five letters every time. Pick whichever one fits the moment, and let it do its job. Most of us aren't waking up already disciplined and on fire — and that's not a flaw, that's just being human. If you've been stuck on something, I'd love to know which letter of SPARK actually got you moving. Okay.. our top story this week: XX The FDA approved Tzield for use in stage 3 T1D – that's what we used to just call type 1. It's the stage where the body can no longer produce enough insulin on its own to manage blood sugars you need to start insulin. This approval is for kids ages 8-17 within 8 weeks of a stage 3 T1D diagnosis. It comes after the PROTECT trial and it's the first approval of a disease-modifying therapy for stage 3 T1D. https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/breakthrough-t1d-celebrates-approval-of-tzield-for-use-in-stage-3-type-1-diabetes-in-the-us-302799532.html XX Encouraging results from a small study of islet cell transplantation in people with type 1 where now all 12 participants in the trial are currently living without external insulin after receiving transplanted insulin-producing islet cells. The study, led by researchers at the University of Chicago, tested an experimental immune therapy called tegoprubart Te-GO-Proo-Bart. The drug is designed to prevent the body from rejecting transplanted cells while avoiding some of the side effects associated with standard anti-rejection medications. You've probably heard about this as the Eledon study – many of the participants have been very active on social media. It was presented at ADA. transplants.https://www.breakthrought1d.org/news-and-updates/tegoprubart-islet-transplant-all-participants-off-external-insulin/ XX New data suggest that acmopatide (ack-MOW-puh-tyd) (CT-868), an experimental once-daily dual GLP-1/GIP receptor agonist, may help people with type 1 diabetes improve blood sugar control, lose weight, and reduce insulin use. Across all doses, participants lost up to 7% of their body weight and reduced insulin use by as much as 15%. The study lasted just 16 weeks, so researchers say longer-term data will be needed to determine whether the benefits can be maintained and whether lower insulin requirements can be achieved without increasing the risk of hypoglycemia. XX A new combination therapy that pairs an amylin analog with semaglutide improved both blood sugar levels and weight loss in several groups of people with type 2 diabetes. The once-weekly injectable, known as CagriSema (KAG-ruh-SEM-uh), was evaluated in three Phase 3 REIMAGINE studies. In people early in the course of type 2 diabetes, researchers reported A1C reductions of up to 1.8 percentage points and significant weight loss compared to placebo after 40 weeks of treatment. Investigators also noted improvements in several cardiometabolic risk factors, including blood pressure. https://www.medpagetoday.com/meetingcoverage/ada/121658 XX Stelo for kids is now FDA cleared.. the over the counter Glucose Biosensor System is now approved for children as young as 2 years old who do not use insulin. The FDA identified pediatric prediabetes as a growing public health concern motivating the expanded indication, noting OTC CGMs can help younger users and their caregivers build glycemic awareness, track patterns in response to me https://www.hcplive.com/view/fda-clears-first-otc-glucose-monitor-for-children XX Insulet presented new data from its STRIVE and EVOLUTION 3 studies showing improved glucose control with its next-generation Omnipod 6. That's , the company's upcoming hybrid closed-loop system for people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The main difference between the Omnipod 6 and Insulet's current Omnipod 5 patch pumps is that the new system has a lower glucose target of 100 mg/dL and better Bluetooth connectivity Insulet also shared progress on a fully closed-loop system designed specifically for type 2 diabetes. It does not require carb-counting or insulin bolusing ahead of meals. Physicians also don't need to program the starting settings. XX Abbott shared new research highlighting challenges in identifying and managing diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). The studies coincide with the company's development of Libre Duo, a dual glucose-ketone sensor that continuously tracks both measurements. Abbott reported that DKA can be difficult to recognize when patients first arrive at the hospital, based on data from more than 100,000 people. The company has submitted the dual sensor to the FDA and recently received CE Mark approval in Europe. More news from ADA including info from Dexcom, Sequel, Sensonics and the world loses a tireless T1D advocate.. that's all to come right after this. -- Back to the news.. XX Dexcom announced its acquisition of Nutrisense, a company that combines continuous glucose monitoring with nutrition coaching and behavioral support. At ADA, the company also presented results from the CONNECT study showing significant A1C reductions and improved glucose control in people with type 2 diabetes not using insulin. The findings add to growing evidence supporting CGM use beyond intensive insulin therapy. We did an episode with CEO Jake Leach at ADA about these announcements as well as updates on G8, their hospital product and much more. XX Sequel Med Tech reported positive clinical results evaluating its twiist automated insulin delivery system in people with type 2 diabetes. The study showed improvements in A1C and time in range over 13 weeks XX Senseonics presented new real-world data supporting the performance of its Eversense 365 implantable CGM. The analysis included more than 12,000 sensors and demonstrated sustained accuracy and effectiveness in both open-loop and automated insulin delivery settings. Researchers also evaluated Eversense use with Sequel Med Tech's twiist system. The findings support broader use of long-term implantable CGM technology. -- MiniMed used ADA 2026 to spotlight two recently cleared diabetes management systems. The MiniMed Flex pump offers a smaller, smartphone-controlled insulin pump option, while MiniMed Go combines the InPen smart insulin pen with Abbott's Instinct sensor. The products received FDA clearance earlier this year. XX Tandem Diabetes Care highlighted data supporting the use of its Control-IQ automated insulin delivery technology during pregnancy. Results from the CIRCUIT trial showed users spent approximately three additional hours per day in the recommended pregnancy glucose range compared with standard therapy. The findings helped support recent regulatory approvals for pregnancy use in both Europe and the United States. Tandem also expanded indications for adults with type 2 diabetes. XX Beta Bionics presented real-world data from the first three years of iLet Bionic Pancreas use. The company reported a 25% improvement in time in range among users, along with positive feedback from clinicians about simplified diabetes management. The iLet system requires only a user's weight to begin therapy and eliminates carbohydrate counting. Beta Bionics also highlighted growing access to near-real-time outcomes through its public data dashboard. XX MannKind presented new findings supporting its Afrezza inhaled insulin at ADA 2026. A post-hoc analysis of the INHALE-1 study found that pediatric users reported greater treatment satisfaction compared with those using rapid-acting injected insulin. The results come shortly after FDA approval expanded Afrezza's indication to include children. We did a bonus episode with one of the lead investigators of the study that lead to that approval. XX Adaptyx presented early clinical data supporting a wearable sensor that continuously measures cortisol levels. The device successfully tracked cortisol changes during both controlled testing and overnight monitoring in first-in-human studies. Company leaders say cortisol plays a major role in conditions including diabetes, hypertension, and depression. The technology uses synthetic DNA-based molecular switches to generate real-time readings. XX Biolinq shared new clinical findings for its Shine continuous glucose monitoring system. The needle-free device combines glucose monitoring with activity and sleep tracking .The system received FDA clearance in 2025. They're also looking at measuring lactate through the sensor. XX Long-time T1D advocate Kent Schnakenberg died last week. Schnakenberg was known in his community for using his love of bicycling to raise awareness of Type 1 diabetes. He also advocated for improving the lives of those living with the disease. Inspired by his niece, Michelle, who was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes when she was 13 years old, since 2014 he has traveled around the country cycling thousands of miles, speaking to hundreds and hundreds of kids and raising Money. According to Schnakenberg's family, he suffered a head trauma incident in his home on Wednesday. I spoke to Kent years ago – I believe the first year of the podcast. A sad loss but wonderful to see so many tributes and memories posted on social media in the last few days. https://diabetes-connections.com/john-costik-co-creator-of-nightscout-team-schnak/ https://www.wibw.com/2026/06/12/team-schnak-founder-kent-schnakenberg-passes-away/ XX And finally. Alexander Zverev (ts-ver-uhv) won the French Open, his first Grand Slam title. He lives with type 1, he paused a couple of time to check his blood sugar. He was diagnosed at age 4 and partners with Medtronic. "Becoming a professional tennis player was always my dream," Zverev shared in an article posted by Medtronic. "Early on, I was told that competing at the highest level with diabetes was impossible — but my family and I refused to accept that. That's why I'm partnering with Medtronic Diabetes: I want every person with diabetes to feel empowered to live the life they want." He also has a foundation committed to children with type 1 diabetes. Among other things, the life-saving insulin and other essential drugs are provided – also in developing countries." https://www.mensjournal.com/news/alexander-zverev-diabetes-wins-french-open-2026-medical-condition

BONUS: Why Your Organization Is Still a Factory — And What an Octopus Can Teach You About Transformation Phil Le-Brun and Dr. Jana Werner both work inside Amazon, advising Fortune 500 leaders on transformation. But before Amazon, they spent decades in the trenches — Phil as International CIO of McDonald's, Jana leading change in banking and logistics. Together they wrote The Octopus Organization (HBR Press) to explain why most companies are still running on a hundred-year-old factory model, and what the alternative looks like. "We Want to Help You Make Your Own New Interesting Mistakes" "We keep saying, as Phil likes to say, can we help you make your own new interesting mistakes and avoid the mistakes that we see again and again." Jana and Phil are both practitioners who have led large-scale changes — and made mistakes they're now happy to share. Jana describes working with incredible, smart, thoughtful people inside large organizations who weren't trusted, weren't allowed to do the work they could do, and couldn't be their best selves. She managed to turn teams considered underperforming into rock stars simply by listening and giving them space. Phil saw the same pattern at McDonald's — incredible people who knew the answers but weren't allowed to act on them. A disastrous standardization push from 2002 to 2004 taught him that top-down efficiency mandates don't work. The CEO left, and Phil got the opportunity to tap into people lower in the organization, define a common mission, and start building from there. The Factory Model Nobody Questions "There was no upside for her people taking ownership because you could have career-limiting effects if you made a mistake, if you were seen to be making a mistake or overstepping." Jana shared two sides of the same problem. A CEO of a large investment company told her he has to sign off on every small decision — and his people assume he wants to. Neither side wants this, but nobody questions the processes in place. On the other side, a COO told Jana "my people don't want ownership." After half an hour of coaching, the COO realized there was no upside for her people to take ownership — mistakes meant career-limiting consequences. Jana is honest about her own experience too: a team member told her she was micromanaging, and she denied it. They created a secret signal — scratching an ear in meetings whenever she micromanaged. He was scratching a lot. Phil adds that what he calls "yoga babble" — abstractions like "we're going to become an agile platform-based culture" — lets leaders avoid saying what they actually mean. Nobody challenges it because the boss said it, and it sounds sort of right. The result: completely meaningless direction. The Octopus — Distributed Intelligence in Practice "It has two thirds of its intelligence, its neurons, in its arms. The arms connect independently — they don't always need a central brain, but they also have one, so they can stay aligned but also work independently." The octopus has distributed neural clusters in each arm. It can adapt, shape-shift, change the texture of its skin, and even alter its RNA to switch between cold and hot water within hours. For Jana and Phil, this is the organizational metaphor: teams that can think locally and act without waiting for permission from the center, while staying aligned on mission. Phil translates this for team leaders of 8-10 people inside traditional enterprises: Put together teams with cognitive diversity and encourage constructive conflict — what Linda Hill at Harvard Business School calls "creative abrasion" Invest in the storming, norming, performing cycle instead of cutting through it Leave the "how" to the team — the leader's job is the "why" and the "what" Don't jump to the answer — Einstein said if you have an hour to solve a problem, spend 55 minutes understanding the problem Start executing quickly through rapid experimentation; you can't plan your way to success in novel situations Don't Build the Pedestal — The Monkey Comes First "Get to the most tricky problems first, and try and solve them. If you can't, figure out fast — and if you can't, just stop, because your whole project is useless." Astro Teller, CEO of Alphabet X's Moonshot Labs, says: "If you want to teach a monkey on a pedestal to recite Shakespeare, don't start by building the pedestal." Jana explains that organizations, once they get a project through the gauntlet of approvals and business cases, start working on the easy, visible things to show progress — the pedestal. But if you can't get the monkey to speak, the pedestal is useless. The counterintuitive move: when passionate people dispassionately tell you the hard problem isn't solvable, give them hugs, put them on a pedestal themselves, give them bonuses — because they just freed up resources for something better. Phil reinforces that this isn't a money problem. At McDonald's, before building a handheld order-taking device, they built a block of wood to test how comfortable it was to hold. Organizations waste far more money trying to plan for things they can't possibly plan for than they would by running quick experiments. Single-Threaded Leaders — The Pig at Breakfast "Who's that person waking up every morning saying, are we actually putting the focus on the things that are going to get us to the finish line of delivering value — not within my function, but across the organization?" Phil tells the classic joke: a pig and chicken are walking down the road. The chicken says "let's open a restaurant." The pig asks what they'll sell. "Ham and eggs, of course," says the chicken. The pig stops: "I need to be far more committed than you." Organizations are full of chickens — people who lay their half-baked decisions, want to sign off, want to say no. What's needed are pigs. Amazon calls them single-threaded leaders. Apple calls them directly responsible individuals. The key: one person owns an initiative end to end, waking up every morning focused on delivering value across the organization, not just within their function. Mow the Lawn — Bureaucracy Grows While You Sleep "Your bureaucracy grows while you sleep. Think about your bureaucracy like mowing a lawn. You can't mow a lawn once." Jana references Parkinson's Law — a senior Royal Navy leader found that even as the fleet shrank, the number of administrators grew by 5-10% annually. This applies to every organization. Middle managers fill their time by adding processes. One person's mistake becomes a process that penalizes 10,000 people. The solution is continuous gardening. At Google, a senior leader added positive friction: if you want more than 5 interviews in the hiring process, you need my approval. At Amazon, the principle "invent and simplify" asks everyone every year: what are we simplifying? The simplification work has to come from those closest to the problems — most leaders don't know half of what people are actually doing. Innovation Belongs to Everyone — Not a Lab "Psychological safety — it's not even a prefrontal cortex thing, it's not a conscious thought, it's that fight-or-flight reaction you have in the moment." Phil makes the case that innovation starts with psychological safety at the team level, not an organization-wide mandate. It's the team leader asking questions, being humble, responding to disagreement with "tell me more" instead of "I don't agree." It means celebrating intelligent failures — someone who tested a hypothesis, found it didn't work, and stopped. At Amazon town halls, executives open by making fun of Amazon's failures, like the Fire Phone. The message: if you're thinking big, you'll also fail. The Fire Phone didn't work, but it informed future hardware investments. The only true failure is not learning from experimentation. Phil and Jana both emphasize that once leaders experience what happens when people are truly freed to do their best work, they get addicted to it. About Phil Le-Brun and Dr. Jana Werner Phil Le-Brun is the former International CIO of McDonald's and now leads the AWS Executives in Residence team, advising Fortune 500 leaders on transformation. Dr. Jana Werner is an Executive in Residence at AWS who built their EMEA transformation practice after leading digital change in financial services. The secret to staying consistent might be hiding in your backyard. Most people quit their fitness routines not because they lack discipline, but because progress is invisible in the short term. We live in a world wired for instant gratification, and when weeks of hard work in the gym produce no visible results, that invisibility is defeating. Yard work offers a useful contrast. Pull a weed, see the bare ground. Mow a strip of lawn, see exactly what you've covered. The feedback is immediate, and that immediacy does something powerful for motivation. Dr. Andrew Fix uses that observation as a jumping-off point for a bigger question: how do you stay motivated when the progress you're working toward won't show up for weeks or months? His answer has less to do with willpower than with learning to notice smaller signals along the way. What went right today, even if the day itself felt like a loss? What did you learn from the thing that didn't work out? The people who eventually reach their goals tend to be the ones who get good at asking those questions rather than waiting for a big win to validate the effort. The episode is a good reminder that consistency isn't a personality trait. It's a practice, and part of that practice is training yourself to find evidence that the work is worth continuing, even when the scoreboard doesn't show it yet. Quotes "It takes a lot of time, weeks, months of consistency to really be able to sometimes see with your own eyes the progress that's happening. That can be very defeating sometimes." (04:35 | Dr. Andrew Fix) "What happens is they keep hopping from thing to thing, fad to fad, diet to diet, new workout plan to new workout plan. And you never stick with something long enough to actually see the results take shape." (05:02 | Dr. Andrew Fix) "Even on days that are not going according to plan, are there little things that worked out?" (07:10| Dr. Andrew Fix) "The people who are going to succeed and the people who are going to be in a farther place at the end of the day are going to have failed more times than the people who never got to that place." (07:55 | Dr. Andrew Fix) "Just keep falling and failing forward, and we'll eventually make it to where we want to go." Mow much do you understand the depth of your own sin?
On a rugged island called Patmos, John had an encounter that completely overwhelmed him. John was no ordinary man—he had been one of Jesus' closest disciples. He had seen the miracles, heard the teachings, stood near the cross, and witnessed the resurrection. He had helped lead the early church and remained faithful even as others were persecuted and killed. Mow, in exile, near the end of his life, he encounters Jesus again—but this time not as the suffering servant, but as the risen, glorified King.Revelation 1:17–18 says:“When I saw Him, I fell at His feet as though dead. Then He placed His right hand on me and said, ‘Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.'”In these words, we find three powerful truths that have changed the world—and still change lives today.1. JESUS DIEDJesus says, “I was dead.” These simple words carry incredible weight. Jesus truly died. His death was not symbolic or exaggerated—it was real, physical, and brutal. The Gospel accounts make this very clear.Mark 15:37 tells us, “With a loud cry, Jesus breathed His last.”John 19:34 describes how a soldier pierced His side, and blood and water flowed out.Luke 23:46 records His final words, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.”These are eyewitness accounts. Jesus really died. But the deeper question is: Why did He die?The Bible tells us that Jesus came as a sacrifice for sin. From the beginning, this was His purpose—to take upon Himself the punishment that we deserved.Isaiah 53:4–5 says: “He was pierced for our transgressions… the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed.”His death was not an accident. It was an act of love.1 John 3:16 says: “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us.”Romans 5:8 adds: “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”The cross is the greatest demonstration of God's love. Jesus went through suffering and death so that we could be forgiven, restored, and brought back into relationship with God.2. JESUS IS ALIVEBut the story does not end with death. Jesus goes on to say, “I am the Living One… I am alive forever and ever!”This is the foundation of the Christian faith—Jesus did not stay in the grave. There is a powerful story of a young man working in a newspaper archive. The files were divided into “living” and “dead” people. One day he found a file labeled “Jesus Christ” in the dead section. Looking around carefully, he moved it into the living section—because he knew it was in the wrong place. And he was right.Luke 24:5–6 declares: “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; He has risen!”The resurrection is not a side message—it is central.1 Corinthians 15:14 says: “If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.”But Jesus appeared to many after His resurrection. 1 Corinthians 15:5–7 tells us He appeared to Peter, the disciples, and over 500 people at one time. There were too many witnesses for this to be dismissed as myth or legend. Even in modern times, people have investigated the evidence. Journalist Lee Strobel set out to disprove Christianity, but instead became convinced that the resurrection is true.Today, millions of people across the world still testify to the same reality: Jesus is alive. He is not just a figure in history—He is present, active, and real.3. JESUS HAS THE ULTIMATE AUTHORITYJesus declares, “I hold the keys of death and Hades,” revealing His ultimate authority over life, death, and eternity. Just as keys represent ownership and control, Jesus is showing that He alone determines what happens beyond this life. Through His death and resurrection, the power of death—once the greatest weapon of darkness—has been completely broken. As Acts 2:24 says, “it was impossible for death to keep its hold on Him,” and Colossians 2:15 reminds us that Christ has “disarmed the powers and authorities… triumphing over them by the cross.” What looked like defeat became the greatest victory—death itself was defeated.Because of this, fear no longer has the final word. Hebrews 2:14–15 tells us that Jesus has freed us from the fear of death, and His promises in John 11:25–26 and John 14:19 assure us that those who believe in Him will live, even after death. While loss is still painful, for a Christian it is not the end but the beginning of eternal life with Christ. The resurrection gives us hope not only for eternity but also for today—we can experience freedom, healing, restoration, and purpose because Jesus is alive and reigning.Today is an opportunity to respond—to open our lives to Christ, receive His forgiveness, and step into the new life He offers. This is what it means to become one of God's “Easter people”—living in the reality that Jesus has conquered death and offers life forever.

Last summer, the State Library of Louisiana introduced the Check Out Louisiana Museums program. It grants free admission to a selection of museums in the state for library cardholders. Six months later, the program has 24 participating library systems and 17 participating museums. And it's passed a landmark — $100,000 worth in museum passes handed out to library cardholders for free.Kevin Calbert, communications director for the State Library of Louisiana, joins us for more on the success of the program.Last month, a video circulated on Instagram that purported to show crumbling pilings under the Atchafalaya Basin bridge– the bridge that carries Interstate 10 between Baton Rouge and Lafayette. But there was one problem — the bridge that was depicted was actually a bridge in Florida and had nothing to do with Louisiana. As it made its social media rounds, it got plenty of interaction. Most people took the narrator at their word and bemoaned the state's disintegrating infrastructure. Others — including Governor Jeff Landry — fact-checked it.Faimon Roberts, columnist for The Times-Picayune/The Advocate, joins us for more on the importance of fact-checking news that spreads through social media. Over the weekend, dozens of lawnmowers in Abita Springs lined up for the Krewe of Push of Mow, the town's annual lawnmower Mardi Gras parade. The parade generally includes about 55 participants pushing their decorated mowers, and has been parading for more than 20 years.Tayler Migues, Abita Springs' town events coordinator, tells us more.—Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Adam Vos. I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Thursday morning, the 25th of September, 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We go to the Gospel of John 21:9: “Then as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it and bread.”Faith has got feet, faith is a doing word, not a noun. A noun is a table or a chair. It can't move, it can't do anything, but faith is active. Don't tell people that you love them, show them that you love them. Now, the Master taught us very well. Remember, after He had been resurrected He was at a place called Peter's Landing on the Sea of Galilee. It's actually a big lake. It is 21 km long and 13 km wide, and very, very deep and full of fish. The disciples had been fishing all night. Now they were coming to land, and there was the Master, but He wasn't just standing there. He had already taken time to take flour to make bread, to catch fish, to prepare them on the fire, and He was waiting for them. That is what I love about our beloved Jesus. He is not just a talker, He is actually a doer. Now, what about you and I, today. Why don't we do something and especially for someone who can't repay us, then we know that our motive is pure. I want to say to the men, why don't you cook supper tonight? You say, “I don't cook!” Well you better learn. If Jesus can cook, you can cook too! Why don't you wash the dishes? Get up a bit earlier and do something for your family. Mow the grass! Now ladies, I am not letting you off the hook either. Why don't you sit down and watch that rugby match with your husband? “I don't like rugby.” No, he knows you don't like rugby and that is why I am saying, why don't you do it? Then he knows you are doing it because you love him and do it joyfully, and don't forget to shout for the correct team! But jokes aside, let's start to put our faith into practice, let's start doing what Jesus would have done. Let's start helping people physically, not just with a word of encouragement but following up by action.Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day,Goodbye.
Although September marks the end of summer and the gradual change to fall, it doesn't have to signify the end of the gardening season. In this episode, Joanne offers some practical tips and advice for making the most of your September garden. Topics covered in this week's episode: September Reset Reality check: Hot, dry summer stressed many plants. Use September's cooler nights/rain to reassess. Goal: Keep what thrived, replace what struggled with drought-tolerant options. Evaluate & Document Walk-through: List plants that thrived, survived, and failed Take photos now: Capture beds to guide spring moves and timing of blooms. New gardens: Observe 1–2 seasons before big changes. Disease: Powdery Mildew Look for: White, talc-like film on peony, lilac, ninebark, and perennials. Fix: Improve airflow, remove affected leaves, or cut peonies down. Don't: Cut everything back—September still has interest. Divide & Relocate Peonies: Divide/move now; eyes at original depth (shallow). Hostas: Move sun-stressed clumps to cooler/shadier spots; fall divisions avoid leggy spring growth. Rescue Stressed or New Plants Priority: Root establishment, not top growth. Steps: Trim crispy foliage, keep plant tags, and water consistently through September–October. Clearance Rack Buying Inspect roots, not leaves: Healthy = firm, white/tan roots with soil; avoid slimy/sour/rotting roots. Perennials: “Sleep, creep, leap," cosmetic top damage is fine if roots are good. Soil Care Add: Compost, composted mulch, or manure (not more “garden soil”). Why: Better nutrients + moisture retention for next year. Lawn Strategy (Early Fall) Dormant does not mean dead: Expect rebound with dew + cooler nights. Mow high: Especially before/through heat. Weeds: Pull crabgrass before seed set; clear curb/edge weeds to limit spread. Overseed/top-dress: Mostly an October task; focus on moisture now. Japanese Beetles Apply nematodes (late Sept): Only if you can water deeply and consistently; they're swimmers. Deterrence: Avoid their favourite plants; instead, place annual geraniums in your garden as they act as a mild repellent. Tropicals & Houseplants Temperature trigger: Start bringing in when nights drop below 16 °C. Prep: Inspect, rinse, insecticidal soap, flush soil; stage in garage if needed. Figs in pots: Can overwinter in unheated garage; prune in fall to encourage fruiting. Late-Season Colour (Pollinator-Friendly) Shade structure: Sun King aralia (chartreuse), bugbane (burgundy foliage + white spikes). Perennials: Japanese anemone, toad lily, native asters (choose over mums; better for insects). Compact shrubs: Panicle hydrangeas—‘Bobo', ‘Fire Light Tidbit', ‘Little Lime Punch' Evergreens: Critical Watering Need: Deep, infrequent soakings going into winter (cedars, conifers). Why: Prevents winter burn; burlap/windscreens are last resort—moisture is key. I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Thursday morning, the 7th of August, 2025, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We go to the Book of Isaiah 42:1: ”Behold! My Servant whom I uphold…” Then we go to the Gospel of Matthew 12:18. Again, our Heavenly Father says: “Behold! My Servant whom I have chosen, My Beloved in whom My soul is well pleased!” Our Heavenly Father is talking about His only Son, Jesus Christ, and He refers to Him as His Servant. You and I are called to be servants. Our Saviour is a foot washer. He's a washer of people's dirty feet. The greatest thing He ever did was to die for us and that very night that He was betrayed, you can imagine what was waiting for Him, and He knew it, what did He do? He washed His disciples' feet first, before He went out to be crucified. Paul, in my humble opinion, probably the greatest of all the apostles, says, “Imitate me as I imitate Christ.”I want to tell you a little story. Early this morning, like I do every morning, I got up and made my wife, Jill, a cup of tea. As I was going through to my prayer room to start to prepare and seek the Lord for this very message that I am delivering to you today, I happened to walk past the kitchen, and last night we went to bed early and some dishes were in the sink that hadn't been washed. And I thought, “Well, Jill will get up just now and then she will wash them,” and I felt the Holy Spirit say to me, “What would Jesus do?” And I had to stand still. I said, “I am sure He would wash the dishes first.” So I turned around, washed the dishes, dried them, and put them in their rightful place. Then I came through to my prayer room, and I am now delivering to you the message which the Lord gave to me today.Today, wash the dishes, make that favourite meal for your husband. Ja, but you know I am also holding down a job, and it is much easier just to go in and get something ready-made from the shops. No, make something for him. It doesn't matter if you are not the best cook. It will mean so much to him. Mow the lawn for your mom and dad. No, but we have a contractor that does that. You do that. It will make such a difference. Let's be like Jesus today! Remember, charity, which is another word for love, charity begins at home. God bless you as you wash the dishes,Goodbye.

On the week's episode of Three Ravens we're mining out the black gold of history and folklore of Staffordshire - a county with some pretty dark parts, and some very silly ones, too.We start off discussing the tradition of Rogationtide, a week-long celebration that would have started today, which basically involved smacking the ghosts out of your village, all before we sally forth to Staffordshire! We begin with some pretty cool bits of history, including the Black Country industry of chain-making and its relation to the Chained Oak of Alton, the mythical slaughter that gave Lichfield its name, and the rather lofty 'Old Man of Mow,' all before Martin tries to excite us with pretty meagre fare, before pulling out a military-themed pudding for this week's County Dish.Next, we get elbow-deep in folklore, from the doings of Jacobean giant 'Big Wally' Parsons and the church-eating Dragon of Wednesbury to boggarts including Rawhead and Bloody Bones and Dumb Baw to so much else besides, all enhanced by some excerpts from Saturday's upcoming Local Legends interview with Jack Raven, the canny corvid behind the Staffordshire Folklore YouTube channel. Then it's on to the main event: Martin's telling of "The Mermaid of the Black Mere of Morridge" - a slightly murky legend about love, murder, and a mysterious pool that might just lead down the fairyland...We really hope you enjoy the episode, and will be back on Thursday with both a new Forgotten Melodies bonus episode about Villain Songs and a Patreon-exclusive episode of Three Ravens Film Club about 2001's Session 9, all before the full interview with Jack Raven comes out on Saturday! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Hosted on Acast.
