A: Starting seeds indoors is based on the your last average frost date so search growing zone with your zip code, 12 weeks before for peppers, onions leeks, tomatoes 8 weeks, brassicas 6 weeks, When to uncover your roses It is simply when the danger of freezing and thawing has passed so not yet it may be mid April or later when you will do this in zone 4. Pruning lilacs n early spring, before the buds open (April), or After the leaves have fallen in autumn (September, October) Lilacs form flower buds at the tips of branches during the previous growing season. This means that it is important to prune just under the panicles a week or two after the plant has finished blooming. If you prune the branch tips heavily or after the flower buds have formed, you will have fewer blooms next year. For the climbing roses time to prune is from autumn and through winter, while the rose is dormant. For your fruit trees early spring before buds break and trees are still dormant. Q:Is it best to germinate seeds before planting or do they work just as well without soaking? Q: Has anybody use coffee grounds as mulch around tomato plants? listen to a podcast yesterday and they were talking about how good this is for tomatoes A: Coffee grounds contain about 2% N and less then 1% of P and K. You need to work them in the ground in order to get they NPK. It is a great food for worms and to build up the organic matter in your garden. Using coffee grounds as mulch is not good as it forms a hard covering over the soil and prevents water from getting to the plant it acts much like a brick on mulch on the soil Q: I just started seeds and now I have tiny flies all around the soil is this normal and what should I do? A: Those are Fungus gnats normal in all soil 2 things that you can do one spray them with soapy water and 2 sprinkle cinnamon over the soil, just a dusting is contains anti fungal properties and will help keep what gates that are not dead away Q: How many pole beans plants can you plant in a 5 gall bucket? How many Bush beans per 5 gallon bucket? Thanks A: you can get 9 bush bean in a 5 gallon bucket and 8 pole beans this if calculated by the square foot gardening method and a buck is approx 1 sq foot. Q: if my potatoes have sprouted from last year harvest but they are small will I still get good sized potatoes this year. A: It is hard to say you really want a seed potato to be no smaller then a medium size chicken egg. Heirloom Seed – an old cultivar that is "still maintained by gardeners and farmers particularly in isolated or ethnic communities". These may have been commonly grown during earlier periods in human history, but are not used in modern large-scale agriculture Organic - have been produced entirely through organic practices by a certified organic operation. In order to be sold as such, they must be produced by such a facility which has been certified by an accredited government agency - Hybrid – the deliberate crossing of two different parent varieties from the same species. A hybrid can be produced organically. This does not mean genetically modified. We recommend heirloom and organic varieties. We find this produces the best vegetables that best adapt to the environment that they are in. F1 and F2 Seeds This will result in the hybrid seeds the breeders are after, and they're known as “F1” seeds, or first generation seeds. F1 seeds will be the most stable of any seeds that follow it in future generations, and those generations will be known as “F2” seeds, “F3” seeds, and so forth as more seeds are made Gmo seeds Genetically modified crops are plants used in agriculture, the DNA of which has been modified using genetic engineering methods. In most cases, the aim is to introduce a new trait to the plant which does not occur naturally in the species Note: You can not buy GMO seeds for you garden In segment two Joey and Holly ask the question how effective is companion plating? https://www.gardenmyths.com/companion-planting-truth-myth/ author Robert Pavlis Here is what the definition is for companion planting Companion planting in gardening and agriculture is the planting of different crops in proximity for any of a number of different reasons, including pest control, pollination, providing habitat for beneficial insects, maximizing use of space, and to otherwise increase crop productivity And that is one of the problems with this topic. There is no single accepted definition. If we can’t agree on what it is, how can we debate its existence? I’ve taken a definition from the North American Permaculture Magazine, and modified it to include the case where only one plant receives a benefit; “a type of polyculture, where two or more plant types are grown together because at least one of them shows improved growth due to the presence of the others.” No scientific proof that companion planting If I plant some corn and climbing beans together, the corn provides structure for the beans to climb up and that is good for the beans. This example is quite clear and it certainly demonstrates that companion planting works. Lettuce likes to grow cool and by mid summer it needs extra shade to stay cool or it bolts. Planting it behind larger tomato plants provides a cooler environment. Again a good example of companion planting that works. It is kind of pointless to have a debate about whether or not companion planting works – I just gave two examples to show it does work. The problem is that just because it works in these two cases does not mean that the hundreds of other examples also work. Planting marigolds to reduce root knot nematodes is a very common suggestion. It does work, provided that you match the right species of marigold with your crop, and you first grow the marigold and then in the same season immediately follow it with the crop, something only possible in warm climates. For this reason it does not work for most gardeners. Most of the examples of companion planting promoted for gardeners have NOT been tested. The reality is that research money is tight and when it is available, it will be used for agricultural situations – not home gardens. Most suggestions have no scientific basis. Many times it is just stuff made up to sell advertising, sell a book or promote an individuals idea. I had a look at one of the books that made this topic very popular; Carrots Love Tomatoes by Louise Riotte. It contains absolutely no scientific evidence for the claims and most combinations don’t even have logical explanations as to why they work – they just do. And yet those claims have been repeated millions of times as if they are fact. Is segment three Joey and Holly talk with their guest Joe Lamp'l https://joegardener.com/ https://www.growingagreenerworld.com/ As one of the country’s most recognized and trusted personalities in gardening and green-living, that passion for living a greener life is evident to a nationwide audience who watches Joe Lampl in his current role as Creator, Executive Producer and Host of the multi-award-winning PBS series, Growing a Greener World. He is also an author, blogger, and more! 1. many people have trees on their property, can tree trimming still be done now? Or when is the best time to trim? B. What is the most common mistake when it come to tree trimming, 2. We talk about killer compost every time you come on the show but it is worth repeating?. What is killer compost and you had to deal with it personally in your raised beds to share what happened. 3.we are getting closer to planting each day. Is there any truth to you can plant things closer than recommended in a raised bed than in the ground because you have really good soil in the raised beds ? 4.we try to start as many of the plants we grow from seed but we do pick up plants from our independent garden center and there is nothing wrong with that. What are a few tips you can share when it comes to pick out and buying plants. 5.. Let talk about your show that is how most know you from, the show Growing A Greener world has been around for 10 seasons now. In those 10 seasons what has been a couple your personal wow moments? People you have met or what they have done with their world or place you have been to? 6. Where can people find more about you ? Band It About - Proudly Supporting Live Music "Podcast Series"
March 8th is International Women's Day, this year's campaign theme is #EachforEqual; An equal world is an enabled world. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality. Collectively, each one of us can help create a gender equal world. We can actively choose to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations, and celebrate women's achievements. This year's theme fits perfectly in to the ongoing struggles that women within the music industry face world wide. I extended a Public invitation to all women involved within any aspect of the music industry, offering flexible times to conduct the interview via phone to make it easier to fit in with everyone who could spare up to 30 mins out of their day, in hope of being able to get as many different views as possible. I researched as much as possible prior to writing the questions asked, as I wanted to make sure that the interview would offer something different to what has already been published in the past. Giving the participants the opportunity to be thoughtful, and honest with their responses, enabling them to provide their personal insight and experiences, to shed as much light as possible onto an issue which for generations has been pushed in to the dark. My eyes were opened to how little meaningful discussions are available publicly whilst researching, and there are so many more discussions that need to be had on this subject. With that being said, I hope that next time an opportunity to discuss issues that impact us all becomes available, that more women will trust that I will conduct the interview thoughtfully, and feel safe in sharing their stories with me. I would like to thank everyone that agreed to be interviewed, I appreciate you all for supporting my podcast, and for making the time to chat with me, I chose to open and close this special episode with "I Am Woman", which was written by Helen Reddy, and Ray Burton. The questions asked: Q: What does this year’s theme for International Woman’s Day “An equal world is an enabled world” mean to you in relation to your role? Q: Do you think that the Australian music industry is inclusive of everyone? Q: Why do think so many female music students do not go on to work within the Music Industry once they have completed their studies? Q: Are the women who teach music failing to support, encourage, and mentor their female students? Could they be giving priority to their male students knowing that they have a better chance of being successful within the industry? Q: Have you ever felt pressured to compromise your own comfort levels in order to look a certain way, or stopped being true to yourself in hope of getting ahead? Q: Have you experienced indecent behaviour either physically, mentally or emotionally while working as a musician? Q: Have you had an experience when you felt that you were not supported or sabotaged by other women in the industry? Q: Has there been a time that you have not been given credit for work that you have done, or someone has taken the credit for your work? Q: Have you witnessed positive changes in the industry in regards to women? Q: Is there anything that you would still like to see change? https://www.facebook.com/allowmetoguideyoutothegig Email: mailto:banditabout17@gmail.com https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/band-it-about-proudly-supporting-live-music-podcast-series/id1493050539 https://anchor.fm/dianne-spillane --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dianne-spillane/message

A new week, a new episode! After almost 15 years of professional career playing in Spain and Portugal, Kristina’s debut as a producer is worldwide introduced in 2015 through the label “Amsafe Records” with TRAXX1 and TRAXX2, the first two Ep's. Her interests and focus during this period was mainly Drum & Bass, Breaks and Electro. Now a days she works in her own vision of the Electronic Music which goes from Techno to US House. The AMSAFE concept and its meaning carries a message: “The need of a spiritual guide that protects us from a material world of hazardous nature and against of the soul development”. Based on different styles and using other formats like CD and vinyls, Kristina exposes and sets up DJ sets built from deconstruction. Break lines or musical concepts are often the pathways of building new ideas to help us understand electronic music. Q&A: Q: So you have been active as a DJ for the last 15 years, what motivated you to take it a step further and start producing? A: The production is something that interested me since I was a teenager, when I became aware of what electronic music was, and in those days it was made basically with machines. I had many imagination, and my head constantly invented sounds and songs, sampling with my mind, but making music was something that felt like an unattainable dream. I used to buy some magazines of music production, (which hardly understand) because I liked watching all these devices, and i wanted to understand how can be created these music that is able to make you fly. But when I started going to parties and clubs, DJs kept all my attention, and when I started to deejing at the end of 1999 ,devoted all my time to this art. 4 years ago I moved to Barcelona, and I thought it was time to make a change, and reach aims postponed. I recieved classes of music production in a school, and later received privates. And that happened until today. So my dream has come true! Q: What inspires you as a producer? A: Now a days what inspires me are positive things. When i feel good and energized, I want to get into the studio and experiment with the music. As I am novice in the field of production and I think that negative emotions stop to me sometimes. I get inspired as well by old electro american records. Also it was really hard to set up my studio and when i wake every day and i look it i feel really inspired. Listening to productions from other artists give me inspiration as well. I like artists such a Kenny Larkin, Boards of Canada, Conforce... Q: Has the launch of your label gained good acceptance? A: Yes. I'm really surprised with the success. Being my first first record i was i bit scared but…the record sells good, and even is sold out in some store like Juno Records. I have received very good feedbacks directly from artists who I respect quite much like Laurent Garnier, Eric Cloutier (Bunker NY) Nina Kraviz, Marcel Dettmann... and support from music lovers worldwide. I really appreciate the warm welcome everybody is giving me. Q: What are your future plans as a DJ and producer? A: Thinking in a close date, as a producer I have just finished The "AMSAFE TRAXX 2", that will be out in a few weeks and include on A side another with a project that I have with a guy called Modellover... So now I can concentrate myself in other requests for other labels. As a DJ I continue with my residence at Macarena club Barcelona, twice a month called "Technologica", focused on the Techno sounds. Q: What else do you enjoy to do when you're not in the studio or behind the decks? A: Listening to many different styles of music, and also many other things: like swimming, practicing yoga with my husband, taking a walk at the beach, sharing time with family and friends, painting… Links: http://www.kristina-amsafe.com/about.html https://www.facebook.com/KristinaAmsafeTraxx https://soundcloud.com/kristina-amsafetraxx Artwork: woof woof! https://www.flickr.com/photos/iandesign/
