YouTuber Brad Lynch (aka SadlyItsBradley) has completely replaced all of his computer screens with an Apple Vision Pro, even going as far as getting a headless Mac Book Pro that does not even have a screen. He's been using the Apple Vision Pro for around 8 hours a day since launch, and I wanted to get a sense of how he's been using it. It turns out the he is mostly streaming his gaming PC via Moonlight and using social VR apps like VRChat via ALVR to hang out with friends and ambient hang out virtual spaces. He's also using SteamVR overlays to augment his virtual reality experience with Steam apps like XSOverlay, VRHandsFrame, and OVR Advanced Settings. It's feels like a very niche use case of a hardcore VR enthusiast, but one that mixes and mashes realities in a way that might be a sign of things to come. Some of the most compelling apps for Lynch are open source that enable experiences that are being driven by his high-end Windows machine. https://twitter.com/SadlyItsBradley/status/1783406980192702842 Lynch has been closely following a lot on VR hardware developments over the last number of years, but the Apple Vision Pro has satisfied most of his desires in what he wants within a high-end spatial computing device. The resolution is high enough and the quality good enough so that he can spend more time exploring different screen replacement use cases, augmented VR experiences via overlays, and productivity use cases of XR. Most PCVR enthusiasts are Windows users, and so Lynch's audience has traditionally focused more on the gaming use cases of VR. As a result they have not been as interested in the Apple Vision Pro due to the lack of high-fidelity input controls. But for Lynch, the basic locomotion gestures made available in ALVR are good enough for him to get around within VRChat without needed to hook up or use any external controllers. Because of the perceived or actual gaps between his ideal spatial computing use cases and his VR gaming audience, then Lynch actually scrapped his formal review video and is considering releasing clips or falling back to Q&A livestreams to field many questions about the trajectory of hardware in the XR industry. Lynch also has been enjoying the mashing up of spatial contexts in XR, mostly via the SteamVR overlays and windows but mentions some experiments of bringing in fully spatial objects. It reminds me of the interview that I did with the PlutoVR founders in 2020 when they were experimenting a lot with the idea of multi-app spatial computing paradigms with WebXR and apps like Aardvark by Joe Ludwig. Apple is slowly building out more and more spatial primitives across all of their operating systems, and are slowly becoming more and more game engine-like as new APIs were announced as a part of their WWDC, where visionOS 2.0 was announced as coming out later this Fall. We talk about some of the quality of life features, but also the role of an integrated ecosystem, and what BigScreen Beyond, Valve, and Meta might do to keep up with how Apple is pushing forward these ideas of multi-app integrations within spatial computing. At the moment Lynch's 8 hours of daily usage is likely an extreme outlier, but the types of ways that he's blending realities together feels like there's something deeper that we'll continue to see moving forward. VR typically involves a complete context shift, while AR tends to bring in modular elements of other contexts to shift your existing context. Lynch is on the bleeding edge of fully immersing himself within these virtual contexts, but modulating his experience with these SteamVR overlays in what could best be described as a sort of AR within VR use case. The visionOS 2.0 Beta release (coming this Fall) allows users to overlay their Mac Virtual Display over immersive environments, but SteamVR Overlays already enable this on PCVR experiences and so Lynch's experiences with overlays in VRChat could definitely be a sign of how Apple might e...
Is Sony really going to give us PSVR and Ragnarok on PC? How about the last two Final Fantasy games? Why aren't more games integrating Twitch like Frostpunk 2? What's going on with Star Wars Acolyte. And what does Josh think of his first 20 levels in World of Warcraft? Exciting News for VR Enthusiasts: Sony PSVR2 PC Compatibility on the Horizon Virtual reality (VR) fans have a reason to rejoice! Sony is working towards expanding the reach of its PSVR2 (PlayStation VR2) beyond the confines of the PlayStation 5. Recent reports reveal that Sony is developing an adapter to enable PC compatibility for the PSVR2, slated for release in 2024. This move could significantly enhance the VR gaming landscape, allowing a broader audience to experience the high-quality immersive content PSVR2 promises. Sony's Ambitious Plans for PSVR2 Sony's plans to support PSVR2 on PC were highlighted in an article by Road to VR, which discusses the company's intention to integrate PSVR2 with SteamVR. This integration aims to bring the exceptional capabilities of the PSVR2 to PC gamers, making it compatible with a plethora of VR titles available on SteamVR. This initiative aligns with Sony's broader strategy to embrace cross-platform compatibility and extend the lifecycle and user base of its VR hardware . Technical Steps Towards Integration According to Twisted Voxel, Sony is actively working on an adapter that will facilitate this PC integration. This adapter is expected to bridge the technological gap between the PSVR2 and PCs, ensuring seamless connectivity and performance. The adapter will likely address issues related to tracking, input compatibility, and other technical challenges inherent in adapting console-specific hardware to PC environments . Certification Milestone Achieved Adding to the credibility of these reports, Korea has certified an adapter for PSVR2, marking a significant step towards its global availability. The certification process is a critical hurdle in bringing any new technology to market, ensuring it meets specific regulatory and safety standards. The certification in Korea indicates that Sony is on track with its development timeline and is likely to meet its planned 2024 release . What This Means for VR Gaming The introduction of PSVR2 compatibility on PC is poised to revolutionize the VR gaming experience. PC gamers will gain access to PSVR2's advanced features, such as improved resolution, better tracking, and enhanced haptic feedback, which are currently exclusive to PS5 users. This move could also stimulate the VR content ecosystem, encouraging developers to create more versatile and high-quality VR experiences that cater to both console and PC audiences. Looking Forward As we await more detailed announcements from Sony, the anticipation builds for what 2024 holds for VR enthusiasts. The integration of PSVR2 with PC could democratize access to premium VR experiences, making high-quality virtual reality more accessible than ever before. Stay tuned for further updates as we get closer to the official release. The future of VR looks incredibly promising with these exciting developments from Sony. Sources: Road to VR - Sony Plans PSVR2 PC Support via SteamVR in 2024 Twisted Voxel - Sony is Working on PSVR2 Adapter for PC Reddit - Certification Image Exciting Times for PC Gamers: God of War Ragnarok, Final Fantasy 16, and Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth Coming Soon The gaming industry is buzzing with exciting news for PC gamers. Major console exclusives are making their way to the PC platform, broadening their audience and enhancing the gaming experience for many. Among the most anticipated titles are God of War Ragnarok, Final Fantasy 16, and Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth. Here's a closer look at what's happening with these blockbuster games and when PC gamers can expect to get their hands on them. God of War Ragnarok: The Norse Epic Expands Its Realm Fans of the God of War series have been eagerly awaiting the PC port of God of War Ragnarok. According to a recent article from Tech4Gamers, the critically acclaimed game is set to arrive on PC soon. This follows the successful PC port of its predecessor, which opened the franchise to a wider audience and received rave reviews for its enhanced graphics and performance on PC. The upcoming release promises to deliver the same high-quality experience, with potential improvements to leverage the capabilities of high-end gaming rigs . Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth: Timed Exclusivity Nears Its End Square Enix's flagship series, Final Fantasy, is also gearing up to grace PC screens with two of its latest entries. Final Fantasy 16 has been a PlayStation 5 exclusive, but as noted by GamesHub, the game's exclusivity period is nearing its end. Naoki Yoshida, the game's producer, hinted at a PC release, though no exact date has been confirmed yet. The anticipation is high as fans expect an official announcement soon . Similarly, Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth is another title that has been locked to the PlayStation 5. TheGamer reported that the exclusivity period for this highly anticipated sequel will conclude, making a PC port likely in the near future. The end date of the exclusivity has been revealed, indicating that PC players won't have to wait too long to dive back into the adventures of Cloud and his companions . Square Enix's Strategy: Accelerating PC Releases Additional evidence suggests that Square Enix is expediting the release of their major titles on PC. Rock Paper Shotgun recently highlighted that the Kingdom Hearts series is making its way to Steam in June. This move indicates a broader strategy by Square Enix to bring their popular franchises to a wider PC audience more swiftly than before . The trend of releasing major titles on PC sooner than in the past could mean that both Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth will be available to PC gamers much sooner than initially expected. Conclusion: A New Era for PC Gaming The upcoming PC ports of God of War Ragnarok, Final Fantasy 16, and Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth mark a significant shift in the gaming industry. These releases not only expand the audience for these critically acclaimed titles but also demonstrate a growing recognition of the PC platform's importance. As the lines between console and PC gaming continue to blur, players can look forward to experiencing the best of both worlds. Stay tuned for official release dates and prepare your gaming rigs for these epic adventures! Sources: Tech4Gamers - God of War Ragnarok PC Port Soon GamesHub - Final Fantasy 16 PS5 Exclusive PC Release TheGamer - Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth State of Play PS5 Exclusive End Date Revealed Rock Paper Shotgun - Kingdom Hearts is Coming to Steam in June Frostpunk 2's Innovative Faction Voting Mechanic: A Game-Changer with Twitch Integration The highly anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed survival strategy game, Frostpunk, is set to introduce a groundbreaking new feature that could redefine how players interact with game narratives. Frostpunk 2 will incorporate a faction voting mechanic that leverages Twitch integration, creating a dynamic and interactive experience for both players and viewers. The Power of Faction Voting In a recent article by Rock Paper Shotgun, the developers of Frostpunk 2 revealed that the game's success may hinge on its innovative faction voting system. This mechanic will allow players to influence the game world through collective decision-making. As factions within the game vie for power and resources, players can cast their votes to determine the course of action. This feature promises to add a layer of complexity and engagement, as players must navigate the political landscape and the consequences of their choices. Twitch Integration: A New Era of Interaction One of the most exciting aspects of this new mechanic is its integration with Twitch. Viewers on the popular streaming platform will have the ability to participate in faction voting, effectively becoming part of the game's ecosystem. This integration will enable streamers to engage their audiences in real-time decision-making processes, blurring the lines between players and spectators. Andy, Nick, and Josh have praised this move and questioned why more game development studios haven't embraced Twitch integration. They argue that incorporating Twitch into game mechanics not only promotes the game but also fosters emergent gameplay and enhances interaction between streamers and their audiences. By involving viewers directly in the gameplay, developers can create unique and memorable experiences that drive both engagement and publicity. The Impact on Game Development Twitch integration in Frostpunk 2 could set a precedent for future game development. The ability for viewers to influence game outcomes introduces a new form of emergent gameplay, where the unpredictability of player decisions can lead to varied and unexpected storylines. This level of interactivity not only enriches the gaming experience but also provides valuable insights into player preferences and behaviors. Moreover, the promotional benefits of Twitch integration are significant. As streamers showcase the game and involve their audiences, the game's visibility and reach are exponentially increased. This organic form of marketing can attract a wider audience, generating buzz and interest long after the initial release. Looking Ahead Frostpunk 2's faction voting mechanic and Twitch integration represent a bold step forward in interactive game design. As players and viewers collaboratively shape the game's narrative, the potential for rich and diverse storytelling is immense. If successful, this approach could inspire other studios to explore similar integrations, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in gaming. The gaming community eagerly awaits Frostpunk 2's release, not just for its compelling gameplay and narrative depth, but for the innovative ways it plans to engage and connect players worldwide. As Andy, Nick, and Josh highlight, the future of gaming may very well lie in the hands of its audience, and Frostpunk 2 is poised to lead the way. Source: Rock Paper Shotgun - Frostpunk 2 Will Live or Die by Its Faction Voting Mechanic, and the Biggest Faction of All is Twitch The Reluctant Hero: In the world of Azeroth, a land plagued by ceaseless conflicts and ancient evils, a group of legendary adventurers had risen to stand against the darkness. For many years, this band of heroes battled dragons, demons, old gods, a lich king, and the massive armies of The Alliance. Their deeds were sung in taverns and their names revered across the land. Yet, among them was one holdout—a heroic figure named Josh who refused to join the fight. Josh was a renowned Mage of immense power, known for his mastery over the arcane and his profound wisdom. Despite his talents, he chose a life of solitude, shunning the battlefield and the glory that came with it. His reasons were his own, and no one could persuade him to take up arms, not even his closest friend, Andy. Andy was the heart of the group, a tireless and relentless fighter who never backed down from a challenge. Over the years, he watched as comrades fell and retired, but he remained steadfast. While the other heroes hung up their swords and spells, Andy continued to defend Azeroth with unwavering determination. He never stopped believing in Josh, always hoping that one day, his friend would join the cause. Years turned into decades, and the land saw many victories. Yet, the shadow of evil never truly vanished. Despite the triumphs, a new threat always seemed to emerge, testing the resolve of Azeroth's defenders. Andy, now older and battle-worn, still carried the torch for his fellow heroes. But with each passing year, he felt the weight of his solitary struggle grow heavier. Twenty long years had passed since the first great battle, and Andy found himself standing alone against the rising tide of darkness. One evening, as he sharpened his blade by the fire, a familiar figure approached from the shadows. It was Josh, his old friend, and the sight of him filled Andy with both surprise and hope. "I've seen enough, Andy," Josh said, his voice steady but resolute. "The time has come for me to fight." Andy's heart soared. He had waited for this moment for so long, and now, his patience and persistence had paid off. Without hesitation, he clasped Josh's hand, a silent agreement passing between them. Together, they would face whatever evil threatened their world. The news of Josh joining the fight spread like wildfire. The two heroes, one a stalwart veteran and the other a long-awaited ally, became the beacon of hope for all who fought against the darkness. Their combined strength and unbreakable bond inspired others to take up arms, rekindling the spirit of the old days. In the battles that followed, Andy and Josh proved to be an unstoppable force. They faced dragons whose fiery breath scorched the earth, demons from the deepest pits of the nether, and old gods with powers that could warp reality itself. Each time, they emerged victorious, their synergy and trust in one another shining through. The armies of The Alliance, a constant thorn in their side, fell before their combined might. With every victory, the legend of Andy and Josh grew, their names becoming synonymous with heroism and perseverance. They conquered every foe, their unity unbreakable even in the face of the unknown future. Though the road ahead was uncertain, Andy and Josh were ready to face it together. They knew that as long as they stood side by side, no darkness could overshadow the light they brought to Azeroth. Ian Hamilton and David Heaney discuss the future of Apple's visionOS platform as ALVR brings SteamVR to the headset.
This week's EYE ON NPI is virtually the best chip you could get for VR tracking - it's the TS4631 Light-to-Digital Converter (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/t/triad-semiconductor/ts4631-light-to-digital-converter) a specialized mixed-signal ASIC that is designed especially for folks who want to design accessories for the SteamVR (https://store.steampowered.com/app/250820/SteamVR/) and specifically, HTC Vive hardware (https://www.vive.com/us/). Thankfully, this chip is available without restriction or NDA, which means it's theoretically possible for anyone to design tracking technology without the hard part of making the fixed-base-transmitters. Precision 3D tracking within a room is incredibly hard: Cameras can kinda do depth perception but they require a lot of computation and often make mistakes on object recognition. You can try using UWB but it's very pricey and has precision limitations. HTC Vive solves this by using IR light, which is not-sensitive to room illumination, doesn't have RF interference, and is fairly inexpensive. Each 'lighthouse' acts like a lighthouse: after an initial Infrared burst for sync, it sweeps IR over X & Y directions. Check out Alan Yates' detailed talk for how this design works (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75ZytcYANTA) The object being tracked has an IR photodiode, which catches the sync pulse, then measures the time between that and the X and Y sweeps. It does this for each lighthouse. With some fun matrix math (https://trmm.net/Lighthouse/), it can then calculate it's X Y Z coordinates with respect to the Lighthouses and, given we know the location of those Lighthouses during an initial calibration step, we can localize that IR diode within the fixed coordinates of the room we're in. That means that if you want a device that can detect the IR pulses and sweeps, all you need is an IR photodiode like the OSRAM BPW 34 (https://www.digikey.com/short/b5jn4pnp) and a bunch of analog electronics to filter out ambient noise, detect the carrier frequency, and give you the timing pulses detected. Or, you can save yourself a ton of effort, and just go with the Triad TS4631 (https://www.digikey.com/short/fwr173wh). All you need is the photodiode and a couple simple passives and you can have a configurable sensor analog front end at low cost and low complexity. In fact, that's what nearly all Vive-compatible hardware uses. (https://twitter.com/SadlyItsBradley/status/1634146181755355136) The Triad TS4631 (https://www.digikey.com/short/fwr173wh) comes in a compact 0.4mm-pitch 9-pin BGA package, which thankfully uses the center ball as a second ground so no buried vias are required. Give it 3.3V power, a BPW 34 S (https://www.digikey.com/short/p8j9r7z0) photodiode, and a couple passives for the power supply, and it's ready to go! There's two output pins for the Envelope and Data from the IR signal. Those two pins are also the I2C configuration pins, and you can use any microcontroller to read and write the configuration registers that let you set up the gain, thresholds and sleep modes. There's a library for the TS4231 (https://github.com/TriadSemi/TS4231) available from Triad, and since the TS4631 mostly improves the TS4231's power usage, you can likely start your microcontroller interfacing and development with that code. There's also lots of other folks playing around with the Triad TS4631 (https://www.digikey.com/short/fwr173wh) and TS4231 (https://www.digikey.com/short/fmcj4wft) which means that you can find hobbyist projects for design inspiration. We found some great info from famed hackers CNLohr (https://hackaday.io/project/153224-ts4231-esp8266-lighthouse-tracking) including libsurvive for desktop tracking (https://github.com/cntools/libsurvive/), Trammell Hudson (https://trmm.net/Lighthouse/), and other YouTube makers (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=ts4231). There's also a published project called HiveTracker (https://hivetracker.github.io/) that has hardware and firmware for a fully-designed tracker board with Bluetooth LE as the backchannel. If you want to get started with making 3D-trackable devices for VR or AR applications, it's great to not have to build the whole system from scratch. With the Triad TS4631, (https://www.digikey.com/short/fwr173wh) you can integrate into the existing SteamVR/HTC Vive ecosystem or you can chart your own path with their hardware and your own software. Either way, you'll want to pick up some TS4631's and you're in luck because DigiKey has them in stock right now, for immediate shipment! Order today and you can be tracking in cyberspace by tomorrow afternoon.

On October 10, 2023 Andre Elijah Immersive filed a $353 million dollar lawsuit against Meta Platforms Technologies and Alo LLC (PDF & Exhibits via UploadVR) claiming both a breach of contract for how Meta terminated a fitness application that it was funding, but also for a broader pattern of anti-competitive behaviors and Sherman Act violations. Elijah is claiming that Meta is giving preference to their own first-party fitness application of Supernatural after the FTC failed to block the acquisition of Within in February 2023. Elijah says that Meta was hedging their bets in the fitness space by investing in other XR apps by taking an ownership stake in different XR projects like the yoga and pilates mixed reality fitness app that he was developing in collaboration Alo LLC. But after the Within sale finally went through, then Elijah claims that Meta found a way to kill off his app in way that breached their contract and represented a broader pattern of anti-competitive practices. The US Federal Trade Commissions (FTC) attempted to sue Meta for alleged anti-competitive behaviors of their 2012 Instagram acquisition, but it was 8 years after the fact in 2020. At the time were a number of indie VR developers who were claiming that Meta was still deploying different anti-competitive practices in how the VR ecosystem was developing. This included BigScreenVR's Darshan Shankar claiming that Meta was preventing his business model of movie screenings in VR while at the same time not preventing their own potential aspirations to do the same. Guy Goodin was forced to remove SteamVR streaming features from his Virtual Desktop application when Meta was working on their own competing product, and Cix Liv claimed that Meta was blocking his application from the app store when Meta had a competing first-party application. Then Meta changed their name from Facebook, and then a day later Meta announced they were acquiring popular fitness application Supernatural made by Within. Then the FTC announced on July 27, 2022 that they're seeking to "Block Virtual Reality Giant Meta's Acquisition of Popular App Creator Within." It wasn't until February 1, 2023 that Bloomberg reported that "US District Judge Edward Davila in San Jose, California, denied the FTC's request for a preliminary injunction to block the proposed transaction." This cleared the way for the Within acquisition to finally go through, and this sets the broader context for Elijah's interactions with Meta in the context of the fitness application space. I had a chance to sit down with Elijah to get a bit more context for what happened, why he believes that Meta is at a minimum in breach of their contract, but also why he's invoking the Sherman Act and alleging some deeper patterns of anti-competitive behaviors. This week Tim and Matt discussed Bethesda's mindset while developing Fallout 76, having come off so many game of the year awards from their previous titles, they felt infallible...and then they launched Fallout 76. Our guest on The XR MAG Show for today is Thomas Van Bouwel, The founder and VR Developer at Cubism. Cubism is a deceptively simple puzzle game in VR where you assemble increasingly complex shapes out of colored blocks. Thomas is a Belgian/Brazilian VR developer with a background in architecture. In today's episode you'll learn: Some pointers on how to transition a career to the XR industry How a minimalist design in a game can take it to the next level How the decision was made to take the UI's in a 3D format What considerations were given to sound and how it was designed You can find Thomas Van Bouwel - Cubism on all social media channels( LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Discord. This week, Linux Out Loud chats about what we want to see happen on the show. Welcome to episode 03 of Linux Out Loud. We fired up our mics, connected those headphones as we searched the community for themes to expound upon. We kept the banter friendly, the conversation somewhat on topic, and had fun doing it. 00:00 Introduction 01:33 C64 Imposter 06:00 Game Sphere Live Streams 12:17 Listener Feedback 17:29 LOL Dreams 26:51 Get 3D Printing 31:02 Game of the Week 39:10 VR on Linux 50:43 Close Nate - C64 Imposter Video - https://youtu.be/bQDu_7aDN9M - SNES 6x Cartridge Holder - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4603455 Matt - Vote on the games streamed from Game Sphere - https://www.youtube.com/c/DestinationLinuxNetwork/community - Among Us Poll - https://discourse.destinationlinux.network/t/matts-among-us-poll-game-shpere-live/4893 - Game of the Week' - https://store.steampowered.com/app/378610/Valley/ Wendy - Listerner Feedback - https://discourse.destinationlinux.network/t/my-complaints-and-issues-with-the-new-linux-out-loud-logo/4852/6 - https://mastodon.online/web/@WendyDLN/107825944569961874 - Hardware Addicts 55 - https://youtu.be/cC5hpcD6lCo - Steam VR Note - When I was talking about the versions and betas, it is related to the Steam VR-specific application inside Steam. - https://store.steampowered.com/app/250820/SteamVR/ Contact info Matt (Twitter @MattGameSphere) Wendy (Mastodon @WendyDLN) Nate (Website CubicleNate.com)
Aardvark is an AR platform within the context of virtual reality applications. Here's how Aardvark is described on it's Steam page:Aardvark is a new kind of web browser that allows users to bring multiple interactive, 3D 'gadgets' into any SteamVR app. It extends the open platform of the web into VR and lets anyone build a gadget and share it with the community. Aardvark gadgets are inherently multi-user so it is easy to collaborate at the Aardvark layer with the people you are in a VR experience with.
Pluto VR is a general-purpose VR, telepresence application that hopes to provide the social presence glue for a standards-driven, multiple-application ecosystem using SteamVR on the PC. I had some new conceptual breakthroughs about the potential future of spatial computing after getting a demo of how Pluto VR is works with other applications like Metachromiumor Aardvark. Metachromium can run entire WebXR applications as an overlay on SteamVR applications, and Aardvark is an future-forward framewok that allows for the development of augmented reality 'gadgets' that run on top of virtual reality experiences.
