We were all deeply saddened by the news of Darryl's passing in the weeks after we first spoke to him. We all had a great time talking to him and were in reverence of the deep well of his knowledge and dedication to exploring the deepest corners of pop culture. After we had finished recording, we had all discussed speaking again in 2025, after he had finished his latest book, which he believed he would be finished later this year. Our sympathies go out to his friends, family, and his husband, who he repeatedly referenced and clearly adored. We would also like to thank the person who reached out to us in the comments of our last episode to inform us of the tragic news. In this episode we spoke at length about about the history of queerness in popular music, Darryl's books, and some of his other interests. His passion was palpable and we are so grateful to have had this conversation with him. For more information on Darryl and his work, you can follow the links provided in WFMU's obituary, pasted in full below: WFMU sadly lost one of its own this past December 23rd. From 2018 until early 2024, Darryl W. Bullock hosted 250 episodes of The World's Worst Records Show on the Sheena's Jungle Room stream. In addition to having a taste for Mrs. Miller records, Darryl was also a music writer who explored the relationship between pop music and LGBT issues in books like David Bowie Made Me Gay: 100 Years of LGBT Music, The Velvet Mafia: The Gay Men Who Ran the Swinging Sixties, and Pop, Pride and Politics: Music Theatre and LGBT Activism, 1970–2021. You can hear Darryl's shows here, and you can leave a remembrance here. Rest in peace, Darryl, and thanks for sharing your music with us.

Because of its origins in patriarcal warfare and religious traditions, Taiko has been done for centuries only by men. Forty years ago, women musicians around the world became enthralled with the art form and have individually created their own Taiko compositions and disciplines. "Forget being cool, I'm going to be honest," states a defiant Beyoncé in her 2013 documentary Life is But a Dream. "I'm going to be sad, I'm going to be passionate, I'm going to be vulnerable. And I'm going to sing from my heart." It was with this mindset that Bey embarked on her fourth solo album, 4. Fresh from a pretty public separation from her father's management, Bey was determined to prove that she could run things in accordance with her own agenda. The outcome was a reflective and triumphant album that re-introduced R&B to commercial radio, and reminded audiences that the bitch got pipes. It's taken six cycles – and some change – for us to summon the energy required to tackle arguably the most prolific female solo artist of our generation. How homophobic is Russia really? From the perspective of music history, you'd be surprised to see a very different image of Russia. In the European pop music of the last decades, Russia is not only a flourishing space of LGBT music; it's a trendsetter. Does Russia have a more dominant LGBT-scene than the rest of Europe? Or is it about something else? Something that's about Russia's peculiar relation with the rest of Europe? A relation that goes back way back into history? We are talking this episode with Roman Gerasimov, a Russian journalist and the most pop music-obsessed guy I've ever met. With him, we'll get into the story of two very different Russian music acts that shook Europe: T.A.T.u. and Pussy Riot. Speaking of Europe, there is more: Italy is getting ready for new elections, a failed terrorist attack took place in Norway, and Luxembourg legalises cannabis (and no, the Netherlands still doesn't). Let us take you back to 2011. Egypt is in revolt. The people of London are rioting. Earthquakes are wreaking havoc in New Zealand and Japan. Amy Winehouse is dead, for christ sake. Life is bleak. But wait – what’s that we can hear in the distance? It’s a girl with a sugary voice. And it sounds like she’s... imploring a boy to... pick up the phone and... give her a call? Oh happy day mama, it’s Carly Rae Jepsen! Come to remind us all that there *is* joy in the world, through the twinned arts of addictive melody and sassy flippance! And so after that, 2011 felt better for a spell. But as quickly as she swooped in, Carly seemed to disappear, destined to be banished forever to the dusty catacombs of early teenies one-hit-wonderdom. Right? Wrong. Flashforward to 2015 and Carly was back with E•MO•TION, a juggernaut of solid-platinum pop. Except this time – she was here, she was queer, and she weren’t goin’ nowheer. From the blaring trumpets of 'Run Away With Me' reminding you of the one that got away, to the rhythm of 'Warm Blood' made to match your throbbing heartbeat, to the multi-layered intricacies of 'Boy Problems', it’s no wonder the album has been so revered by the queer community since its release. And rightly so. But, girl… did you know about E•MO•TION: Side B? Growing up as an awkward music nerd in New Jersey, Lauren Denitzio never saw themselves fronting a band or playing punk rock. In 2017, they've done it twice - first as part of the crucially-underrated outfit The Measure [SA], whose album Notes was twice as good as most punk albums released in the 2010s and got half the recognition. In their second act, Worriers, Denitzio has further explored the semantics of the genre. With a slew of friends along for the ride, Denitzio has turned Worriers into something fearless, fun and fiery. Three chords and the truth has never sounded better. In September, Denitzio toured Australia for the very first time. Before a show at the Red Rattler in Sydney, they explained the key differences between basement shows and proper gigs, the freedom of a musical collective and being a polite punk. Worriers' third album, Survival Pop, is out now via Sideonedummy/Cooking Vinyl. You can stream, download and purchase the album here: http://worriers.bandcamp.com/album/survival-pop/ Follow Lauren/the band on Twitter and Instagram: @worriersmusicFollow the podcast on Twitter: @BarBandsPodFollow David on Twitter: @DJYwrites

Canada's premier LGBT solo country artists, Drake Jensen & Patrick Masse, talk about their new, upbeat country song, “ Go Your Own Way,” meant to inspire young people who are bombarded with the message that they are “less than.” The bright pop-country track has a liberating, anti-bullying message for young LGBTs in the closet, and also knocks down the damaging imaging in social media that perpetuates the idea of perfection, or that we aren't good enough. “The fact is we can do something about it. We can go our own way,” reads the press release for the single. After just one week, "Go Your Own Way" has landed on the Top 10 Most Active Indies chart. Jensen and Masse have also launched the “Go Your Own Way” Project on Facebook, a positive, interactive space encouraging folks to share photos and videos expressing how they "go their own way.” It's a case of Canadian East meets West as Jensen (from Ottowa) and Masse (from Vancouver) team up for to share a powerful, timely message. I've been a fan of both artists for years, and I'm thrilled to share their new song.
