As we celebrate Pride Month and approach summer, one thing is on our minds: queer pop icons. From the fast fame of Chappell Roan and Reneé Rapp to praise for hitmakers like Billie Eilish and Victoria Monét, it feels like we're in a moment for unapologetically queer music in the mainstream. This is especially true for queer femme artists, who are reaching pop stardom. To dive into this moment and see if others are noticing it too, we called up some fellow music-lovers who have been tuned in. In this episode, you'll hear from the ACLU's Stefan Smith, head of digital engagement, and Gillian Branstetter, communications strategist for the LGBTQ Project. Later, we're joined by music journalist Sasha Geffen, author of the book "Glitter Up the Dark: How Pop Music Broke the Binary." Together, we discuss what we're noticing in the world of queer music, our favorite artists, and the rich history that led us to where we are today. The things Adeem the Artist hasn't directly experienced, the Knoxville musician has delicately observed in the struggles of strangers and friends in their 34 years, culminating in 11 sung stories of "White Trash Revelry" released on Dec. 2.  Perhaps, you have seen the album on "best-of" lists by Rolling Stone and Billboard or heard their music praised by Brandi Carlile, a queer country artist in her own right − and a Grammy-winning one, at that. Conversations surrounding Southern music and culture are changing, and Adeem the Artist is a newfound flagbearer for that movement. But if you ask them, they're just calling it how they see it. When it comes to sweeping romance, earnest lyrics and – let's face it, songs that last six minutes MINIMUM – there really is no topping Ms. Céline Marie Claudette Dion. From humble beginnings in Charlemagne, Quebec (which is queer) to becoming the best-selling Canadian recording artist in history, Queen Céline has dominated the music industry for over three decades. This week I'm joined by Casper - founder of the queer music podcast Homoground, and the virtual co-working space Focus/Time. They're also a new-ish employee at AIR media (Association of Independent Artists in Radio). I discovered Casper on Instagram through a sponsored ad they placed promoting homoground, and learning about a podcast dedicated explicitly to queer musicians made my heart happy. We discuss what it takes to fundraise for a creative project, the idea of kicking perfectionism out the door as soon as possible to get your project started and build some momentum, some of the best ways to sustain a project over time, and we also learn a bit about Casper's more recent choice to align their neutral pronouns with their identity as non-binary. I'm particularly excited to have this chat merging my lifelong passion of music with a more recent passion of podcasting. I hope you get as much out of this episode as I did! What stood out to me most after speaking with casper was their ability to always look for the opportunity in the set back. Living a meaningful life takes courage to stand by your values, to put the work in to see your vision through, and to be willing to honor the creative voice inside you that sometimes is hard to hear. Sometimes its a simple as just showing up again and again asking the question “how can I be of service to my creative voice today”. When it's hard to hear that voice maybe it's knowing when to step away, create some stillness, and attune yourself to what's happening internally. Casper found themself drawn to music at an early age, and over the years has built a life to support that passion. What a privilege it is to wake up and ask the creator inside “how can I be of service to you today” — I hope that's how I can start all my days - co-creating a life I am inspired to live.Homoground podcast Airmedia New Voices Fellowship Focus/Time Instagram Support the show

In the pop pantheon of stars taken from us too soon, few tales are as tragic – or as gruesome – as the tale of Selena. The lead singer in a family band created by her ambitious father, Selena spent most of her young life on the road playing in restaurants and state fairs. Despite being a first-language English speaker, most of Selena’s music was recorded and performed in Spanish, and Latin crowds swiftly became enamoured by the singer’s voice and charm. In early 1995, with four Spanish albums and a Grammy under her belt, Selena began to record Dreaming of You. The album was her long-anticipated cross-over into the English language music market. It was slated to be a career-defining moment for Selena, introducing her to new audiences and solidifying her as a global star. However on March 31, less than a month before her 24th birthday, Selena was shot dead by Yolanda Saldívar, an employee of Selena’s and the head of her fan club. In this episode, Andy and Drew are joined by Selena stan and deep trans-Pacific friend of the pod Rícardo Garcia to discuss the life and legacy of the Madonna of Tejano music. This week we’ve got TWO playlists for your nerve – check out both the official episode playlist and Rícardo’s playlist, a love-letter to Selena’s range entitled “Selena, con Amor”. Hey, so glad you could make it! This episode we talk Celebrity Skin, the 1998 crack-at-the-mainstream album by Courtney Love and her band, Hole. Firmly planted in the mystique and fallacy of Hollywood and California, Celebrity Skin serves as a worthy counterpart to the mystique and fallacy of Courtney Love. A hotbed of raw talent, yes… a problematic fave, no doubt, but more than anything else, Love’s defining attribute remains being deeply misunderstood. From there, Bush parlayed her subsequent albums to firmly establish herself as British pop music’s sacred moonchild, before releasing her fifth studio album Hounds of Love in 1985.Split into two sections; the first five tracks of Hounds of Love act as standalone tracks, with the remainder subtitled “The Ninth Wave” telling the story of… well, you’ll just have to wait and hear. Our accompanying playlist to this episode tells the tale of Kate Bush and her many descendants from Imogen Heap and Tori Amos, to ANOHNI and Goldfrapp (all coming soon to the pod, we prom).Follow the pod on Instagram at @auralfixationpodcast, or the boys on @with.all.drew.respect and @andrewdoyouthinkyouare. The term “iconic” is bandied about on this podcast far too often, but when it comes to describing Madonna’s Vogue, there’s really no better adjective. At the intersection of old Hollywood glamour and the New York ballroom scene, Vogue was responsible for introducing queer POCs and their art to the mainstream on its release in 1990. Accompanied by David Fincher’s chill-inducing black and white video and *that* performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, the song immediately became required reading on the Queer Culture 101 syllabus and that position in the canon holds strong thirty years later. It is for all these reasons and more that we bring you an entire, full-length episode dedicated purely to Vogue. The subject is too big to tackle alone. As such, we begged deep biological sis of the pod – and Aural Fixation’s answer to Merle Ginsberg – Char to return to the airwaves and give her hot takes. At the intersections of Black, female and queer excellence in 2020 sits a Baptist-raised sci-fi nerd who can act, dance, rap, write, and of course, sing. Not remotely intimidating to tackle in fifty-seven minutes at all, but Janelle Monáe’s Dirty Computer is worth it. From her first EP in 2007, Monáe has put her money where her mouth is. High concept and intricate imagery are complimented with top tier songwriting, production and bangers, with each piece of the puzzle held to the highest standard. Features from Brian Wilson, Zoë Kravitz and Grimes litter an equally eclectic tapestry of genres on Dirty Computer filtered through Monäe’s own perception of what America is today, and what it has the potential to be. There really is no one like Cher. A towering goddess of this stature couldn't be tackled by Drew and Andy alone, so we roped in long-time listener and huge friend of the pod, Matthew Harden – aka @slaydydiana. Slaydy dialled in from Melbourne to offer up a deeper understanding of Cher's place in the pop pantheon through the lens of her Believe album, possibly the most commercially successful comeback in music herstory. Does the album (Cher's 22nd!) stand the test of time? Are the sporadic jumps from dance to disco to Latin to world music a result of Cher's legendary mind, or simply too many cooks in the kitchen? And what is it about the album's title track, specifically created for and marketed towards gay men, that resonated with our three hosts as queer pre-teens in 1998? She's Cher, bitch. Snap into it. Speaking of getting political, Taylor Swift’s documentary may have James walking back some of his ‘basic’ comments thrown in her direction in past episodes. The Super Bowl commercials catered, once again, to rainbow capitalism- but isn’t it nice just to be included? And were these commercials directed by M. Night Shaymalan because they were: WEIRD. We unpack the problematic nature of the NFL (and there’s a lot to unpack here between the Colin Kaepernick, the PSA with mothers who lost kids to police violence, Jay-Z’s involvement,  but then again he and Bey sat out the national anthem. His debut album Faith heralded the death of Day-Glo George and the birth of George 2.0. This George was everything a male pop star in the 80’s should have been – a worldwide phenomenon, a master of his craft, a beacon of male sexuality. But wait – what’s that we can hear in the distance? It’s a girl with a sugary voice. And it sounds like she’s... imploring a boy to... pick up the phone and... give her a call? Oh happy day mama, it’s Carly Rae Jepsen! Come to remind us all that there *is* joy in the world, through the twinned arts of addictive melody and sassy flippance! And so after that, 2011 felt better for a spell. But as quickly as she swooped in, Carly seemed to disappear, destined to be banished forever to the dusty catacombs of early teenies one-hit-wonderdom. Right? Wrong. Flashforward to 2015 and Carly was back with E•MO•TION, a juggernaut of solid-platinum pop. Except this time – she was here, she was queer, and she weren’t goin’ nowheer. From the blaring trumpets of 'Run Away With Me' reminding you of the one that got away, to the rhythm of 'Warm Blood' made to match your throbbing heartbeat, to the multi-layered intricacies of 'Boy Problems', it’s no wonder the album has been so revered by the queer community since its release. Jen Cloher tells us about Adelaide in the 1980’s. This was not a place where you discovered gender as "a journey rather than a destination". It was a place you survived. Jen is an ARIA nominated artist and spent almost a decade as one of the country’s best folk leaning singer-songwriters. In 2013, the release of In Blood Memory marked a new era; backed by an all time trio of Courtney Barnett, Bones Sloane and Jen Sholakis, post 2013 Cloher is grittier, groovier and more devastatingly honest than ever before. Jen is an outspoken advocate for artist rights, a label boss and band-leader. In 2011 Jen launched a series of workshops called I Manage My Music, specifically tailored to assist the self-managed musician. She now manages Milk! Records the label started by Courtney Barnett in 2012, which won Best Label at the 2015 AIR Awards. Jen will be featured in the new Queerstories book which can be pre-ordered on Booktopia. Pay no mind to what they say, Episode 3 of Kick the Jukebox is here! Our album of the month is the game-changing Beauty and the Beat by The Go-Go's. Kyle and Louie heap a lot of love on this album by the pioneering all-girl punk/new wave band. They also delve into Jane Wiedlin's solo career, a notable Gravediggaz track, and a song so threateningly queer it was banned from the radio when it was released. Plus! Kyle & Louie found a rare recording that fans of the 70's LA punk band The Germs cannot dare to miss!
