Tales from the Prepper Pantry Big thanks to Ryan Steva on the prepper pantry before this deep freeze Homegrown Cooking: Beef Heart - Next month is steak and kidney stew from Dawn and meatballs from me Travelling with a cooler Freezers are reorganized and ready for incoming lambs Weekly Shopping Report Based on some videos from a few prepping channels (eg. Poplar Report, Pinball Preparedness), I'm trying to be more attentive to shortages, but fortunately haven't seen anything remarkable other than the limit of 2 on Aldi eggs. Dollar Tree was first.  Stock is always changing there, but there were no vacant areas and I did not see duplication being used to hide low stock.  The drink selection remains good.  The food coolers are mostly full. We did not go in to Home Depot, but the online price of a 2x4x8 remains at $3.85. Aldi was last.  We found what we wanted.  Staple prices were: bread (20 oz. white): $1.39; eggs: $4.17 (+, limit 2); whole milk: $2.87 (-); heavy cream: $5.39; OJ: $3.69; butter: $3.79 (-); bacon: $3.99; potatoes: no tag; sugar: $2.99 (+); flour: $2.35 (+); and 80% lean ground beef: $3.79.  Untainted regular unleaded at Weigels was still $3.59 per gallon, but the 87 octane (regular) corrupted with ethanol is only $2.79. Frugality Tip from Margo Today is a short and sweet simple tip. Whenever we are out shopping or whatnot I pack a small cooler with drinks and a reusable ice block. I also keep an extra insulated tumbler full of water in the car at all times. Stopping to grab a drink adds up quickly, especially with someone that drinks soda. So stop yourself from grabbing that convenience store overpriced drink and just pack a small cooler. Happy saving y'all. ~Margo Operation Independence Value of four rams on homestead income: $1200 Main Topic of today's Show: Planning Your Kitchen Garden Two ways to plan: Replacing fresh veg in season then buying shipped in “fresh” veg the rest of the year VSr eating seasonally. What is your goal? (Replace most food by growing your own VS supplementing and sourcing locally or regenerative options) I dont care what you say - Unless you are wiling to dramatically adjust what you eat, your goal is to supplement Grain example - it's both regional and dependent on how much land you have in production: Wheat, oats, corn, beans That mid-winter banana, apples, fresh summer squash, etc Sugar Seasonal eating method Use what is here and ripe first (Bone broth story) Preserve what makes sense Then tap stored items when fresh is not available Develop/track a cycle of preservation  power pantry method of storing what you use and using what you store. (Pay attention to what you really use each year and do tap into waves of abundance - cornmageddon)  Assessing Needs: Calculate the amount of food needed per person and how to align this dietary preferences. Typical example - 2 heads of lettuce a week, means succession planting 2 heads a week, 5 lbs of tomatoes a week, means succession planting tomatoes. Also, there is an AI problem The reality of vegetable seasonality -  Tomatoes ripen in waves Lettuce will stop producing in very hot weather Location appropriate alternatives Preserving surplus for “off season” use (Carrots and other “Roots” Integration into the local community and compost  Meals replaced method: in season and out of season - this is how to estimate % food coming from land and local sources Green bean example - 65 jars - 65 meals covered, most of which will happen Fresh chard, squash, etc 99% meat is from here at this point Choosing plants - Dont plant what you dont eat Radishes story Yield per plant BS on seed packets Proioritize 3 things - Green beans, chard, tomatoes at the HH Garden Layout: Talk about zoning, herbs, and succession planting. How much space do you have - will you have and how close is it to your house? What takes the most interaction? Put high maintenance stuff closer (Tomato wall) INTERPLANTING, COVER CROPS and SUCCESSION PLANTING Soil Health: Your are first growing soil - HomeFoodSystems.com Interplanting, guilds, etc Succession planting and seed roulette Rotation - needed or not? Cover crops - again - homefoodsystems.com Sourcing seeds: Ask locally what people have success with - see if they have saved and will sell you some, participate in seed exchanges even if you have no seeds. I like Baker Creek, Mad River Seeds https://www.etsy.com/market/mad_river_seeds Have fun with this! Especially if it is your first year. He is an organic gardener, a life member of Seed Savers Exchange, and for many years served as a Contributing Editor to Gourmet, Mother Earth News, and The Heirloom Gardener.  From 2002 to 2010, he lectured on Food Studies at Drexel University and is presently lecturing on regional American cuisine in connection with a non-profit academic research institute organized under the name The Roughwood Center for Heritage Seedways. Dr. Weaver received his doctorate in food ethnography at University College Dublin, Ireland, the first doctorate awarded by the University in that field of study. In the winter of 2013, Owen had just moved to Philadelphia. A friend introduced him to Dr. Weaver and he hired him to care for his gardens and the Roughwood Seed Collection. During his four years working with him, Owen was fascinated by slow walks through the garden where he could reveal 10,000 years of human history in each plant story. It was here that Owen first learned how to carefully select and midwife the seeds of these countless storied species. We started a seed catalog and grew for a couple other companies. Dr. Weaver's work with seeds often connects and reconnects gardeners and farmers with seeds that help tell their own stories. One of the best examples is making the Horace Pippin peppers available to African American growers in the Mid-Atlantic, as well as Pennsylvania Dutch and Lenni Lenape heirlooms from Southeastern Pennsylvania.   SEED STORIES TOLD IN THIS EPISODE: Hannah Freeman Bean Pippin's Fish Pepper Bowling Pin Paste Tomato Green Striped Maycock Weaver Pole Bean Shipova Mt. Welcome to Decorah, Iowa!  Decorah is the seat of Winneshiek County and is located in Northeast Iowa.  The town is built on top of a nearly four mile wide crater created by a large meteorite about 470 million years ago.   The crater was filled in when an ancient seaway filled the crater with sediment and strange sea creatures that hardened into fossils.  One of the creatures is even named for the city, Pentecopterus Decorahensis.  The town is located in the Driftless Area, an area in the Midwest that was never covered by ice during the last ice age.  Because the area lacks glacial deposits known as drift, the landscape has steep hills, ridges, and river valleys unlike the the remainder of the Midwest and central Plains regions.  Decorah was settled by a large number of Norwegians who were instrumental in founding Luther College, a private Lutheran college in town.  The town also home to the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, the largest Norwegian Museum in the country.  Nordic Fest is held during the last weekend in July each year to celebrate the traditions and culture of Scandinavian cultures.  The town is also home to the Seed Savers Exchange and the Decorah Ice Cave, which is apparently extremely dark, cold, and dangerous.  We hope you enjoy our trip to Decorah!

I am always inspired by her unwavering faith in gardeners, and the belief that we can meet the incredible challenges of our current time with community, care, and an embrace of the interconnectedness of our natural world.    Garden People Podcast from https://www.instagram.com/violetear_studio/ (@violetear_studio) L I S T E N https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/garden-people/id1595934172 (iTunes) https://open.spotify.com/show/7qlYq5yVrLEgfCuZOtrPcn (Spotify) https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/garden-people (Stitcher) S H O W N O T E S https://www.seedsavers.org (Seed Savers Exchange) https://heronswoodgarden.org (Heronswood) https://www.pacifichorticulture.org/articles/the-educational-journey-of-a-plantsman-john-wittlesey-2/ (John Whittlesey) https://amzn.to/3uYom2z (Earth in Her Hands) https://amzn.to/3RSfV2r (Under Western Skies) http://caitlinatkinson.com (Caitlin Atkinson ) https://www.arabellalennoxboyd.com (Arrabella Lennox Boyd) (and her wonderful https://www.arabellalennoxboyd.com (new book)) https://www.bloomsbury.com/us/author/anna-pavord/ (Anna Pavord), https://amzn.to/3ctIAuF (The Tulip) (and her most recent: https://smile.amazon.com/Seasonal-Gardener-Creative-Planting-Combinations/dp/1838663983/ref=sr_1_1?crid=131NLLAZBIFPI&keywords=anna%20pavord&qid=1658342413&sprefix=anna%20pavord%2Caps%2C187&sr=8-1 (The Seasonal Gardener: Creative Planting Combinations)) https://www.instagram.com/rowenwhite/?hl=en (Rowan White), https://sierraseeds.org/rowens-story/ (Sierra Seeds) https://humansandnature.org/vandana-shiva/ (Vandana Shiva) (two favorites: https://smile.amazon.com/Who-Really-Feeds-World-Agribusiness/dp/1623170621/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=vandana%20shiva&qid=1658342614&s=books&sprefix=vandana%20shiva%2Cstripbooks%2C407&sr=1-6 (Who Really Feeds the World?) and https://amzn.to/3ziQkse (Stolen Harvest)) https://www.soulfirefarm.org/meet-the-farmers/leah-penniman/ (Leah Penniman), https://www.instagram.com/soulfirefarm/?hl=en (Soul Fire Farm) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clare_Cooper_Marcus (Claire Cooper Marcus) (a favorite book: https://amzn.to/3zls4WE (Therapeutic Landscapes)) https://www.slowflowerspodcast.com (Debra Prinzing), https://www.instagram.com/slowflowerssociety/?hl=en (Slow Flower Society ) https://awaytogarden.com (Margaret Roach) P L A N T L I S T Salvia Manzanita - Arctostaphylos edmudsii Big Sur Manzanita Nasturtium Iceberg roses Native Eryngium aristulatum Buckwheats - Eriogonum Geum – (local native is Eeum triflorum) Marigold Deer Grass - Muhlenbergia rigens Purple sage - Salvia leucophylla

What a heartfelt conversation with a true pioneer of Israel's heirloom seeds with Harel Weiss from Nativity Seeds. Harel is a true unsung hero of our region. Biggest takeaway : The power of shifting from a place of anger to a place of peace. Putting the hands in the soil. Harel is the founder of Nativity Seeds, Israel. The only dedicated heritage seed company actively regenerating and collecting indigenous and family seeds in Israel. After a scholarship in Seed Savers Exchange in Iowa, Harel took his education and passion and poured it into developing awareness of the critical importance of heritage seeds in Israel. Starting from virtually nothing and with no significant support network, Harel has worked over the last 8+ years developing his knowledge and bank of seeds endemic to this region, with the goal of sharing these incredible lines to a global audience. One of the thigs I really loved about this interview was the down to earth humbleness of Harel, and the quiet courage he displays, as he keeps growing and promoting visceral awareness and knowledge of the seeds f the Holy Land. I felt really honoured to share Harel's growing success story. Biggest takeaway : The power of shifting from a place of anger to a place of peace, and putting the hands in the soil. Hope you enjoy it as much as i did. Don't forget to leave some FEEDBACK I look forward to my next connection with the ever humble, ever vibrant, Harel Weiss. Hope you enjoy it! We release a new episode with INCREDIBLE guests every Tuesday Watch out next week when we drop our amazing conversation with Israel's own Master of fire technology, Kamin Massa's own, Adiel Schneur . As always i look forward to feedback from YOU. the good and the bad. EcoIQ is here to serve YOU.
