Patrick Montgomery, Author of Baseball's Great Expectations and Barbecue Hall of Famer, Ray Lampe AKA Dr. BBQ, Plus Guest Co-host, Doug Scheiding Patrick Montgomery is an award-winning writer. His latest book is Baseball's Great Expectations: Candid Stories of Ballplayers Who Didn't Live Up to the Hype. The book examines nine players who were once poised for greatness, but as the title clearly states, for whatever reason, their playing careers never reached the levels predicted.  Revealed ls an often-overlooked side of professional baseball;  the struggles with injury, mental exhaustion, pressure, temptations, and sometimes just being in the wrong place at the wrong time.  We often read books which extol successes, but Patrick shows how difficult that success can be to achieve. Ray Lampe AKA Dr. BBQ has been a lover of barbecue since entering his first rib contest in 1982.  He quit the family trucking business after 25 years to become a full-time pit-master,but spent 15 years testing different barbequing styles and participating in cookout competitions before making barbecue his full-time career.  Inducted into the Barbecue Hall of Fame in 2014, Ray is the author of numerous cookbooks, a judge on many televised cooking shows, a winner of numerous cooking competitions, and a restaurateur.  He has witnessed and been a part of the surge in barbecue's enormous growth and popularity and shares these many stories.  We are joined by guest co-host, Doug Scheiding. Ed Maurin was a member of the KCBS Board of Directors in the organization's early days, when he battled the likes of Johnny Trigg, Ray Lampe and Jeff Stehney on the competition circuit. Honing his skills as a Kansas City firefighter, “Fast Eddy” would modify Traeger cookers to his liking, often raising eyebrows - and interest - from fellow competitors. By 1997, Maurin had developed his own line of FEC (Fast Eddy Cookers) that would revolutionize the pellet-cooking industry for restaurants and food trucks worldwide.  Ed is still teamed up with Oklahoma-based Cookshack to bring new smokers to the market, with pizza cooking a primary focus these days. Well…IN THE SAME SHOW, and it was referenced at the front of the Ray segment…Dave Bouska from Butcher BBQ was also a guest and I asked him the very same question…and I will tell you this, outside of the answer on the brisket…the story he tells about “killing cows”  both as a professional and as a youth, and then the story about “Cows smelling blood and death in the air”  will blow your mind…I remember having that discussion with Dave 6 years ago, and hearing it again as I was posting it into the queue…maybe one of the all-time segments ever on this show…because I think there is a disconnect for a lot of people still…the meat you are eating is coming from animals that were killed…I know you understand that from a high level…but SEEING IT and DOING IT are much different…and everyone should see that so they know the WHOLE process…I think that would certainly help bridge that disconnect…might encourage some folks to not eat as much meat too!
