The digital age has made it easier than ever to access health information, but how can we know which sources to trust? Social media is saturated with misinformation. Some of it is inadvertent — many bold pseudoscientific claims seem very convincing, and anyone could be forgiven for sharing it with the best intentions. But, a more deliberate manipulation of scientific information has become commonplace, often used to push certain narratives or turn a profit. Combating this misinformation machine can feel impossible. So, we assembled five experts from different corners of the science communication community to help equip you for the fight: Dr. David L. Katz, MD, MPH, a renowned figure in the field of preventive medicine, public health, and nutrition. (Website: https://davidkatzmd.com/) Steven Novella MD, clinical neurologist and associate professor at Yale University School of Medicine, a host of The Skeptics' Guide to the Universe podcast, and a founder of the New England Skeptical Society. (Website: https://theness.com/neurologicablog/) Dr. Jessica Steier PhD, public health scientist and host of the wildly popular Unbiased Science podcast. (Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/unbiasedscipod) Dr. Jonathan Stea PhD, clinical psychologist and author of the book ‘Mind the Science'. (Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dr_jonathan_stea/ / Website: https://www.jonathanstea.com/) Dr. Idrees Mughal, AKA ‘Dr. Idz', one of the most popular online misinformation-debunking social media icons. (TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@dr_idz / Website: https://www.schoolofdridz.com/) Together, we discuss: • The telltale signs of pseudoscientific messaging. • Where misinformation comes from, and why it often spreads faster than evidence-based facts. • Why we can be so susceptible to believing misinformation. • Who profits by poisoning the science communication space. • How we can improve our scientific literacy and avoid echo chambers. • Ways academics can improve their public health communication. • ‘Your Brain On' is hosted by neurologists, scientists and public health advocates Ayesha and Dean Sherzai. ‘Your Brain On... Misinformation' • SEASON 3 • EPISODE 9

Rob began his popular community beach safety education program ‘The Science of the Surf' in 2001 and gained the nickname ‘Dr Rip' for his habit of releasing harmless purple dye in rip currents to educate people about this important hazard. And I feel completely comfortable with saying that, because if you don't enjoy it, you're not going to dedicate time to it." - 00:04:52-00:05:02 "What good scientists do, they learn from their mistakes, and they admit them, and they say what their motivation was at the time, and then they clarify it and present something better." - 00:12:49-00:13:00 "I wanted to give an example to the research community because I see variation even among professors in their motivations." - 00:13:00-00:13:12 "We're not in the business of trying to say that we've solved all the problems. That's not what good scientists do." - 00:14:51-00:15:01 "I'm not willing to take on a student unless that student is willing to tell me when they think I'm wrong." - 00:29:23-00:29:33 "Mathematicians are always trying to eliminate distractions, get to the essence of something, and make it as simple and transparent as possible." - 00:48:07-00:48:17 "It's trivial to choose to look at something in such detail that it's impossible to predict accurately. Easy to do." - 00:50:07-00:50:18 "If we're doing the same thing we were doing 30 years ago, it means either 30 years ago we were so brilliant that we knew everything, or if we're doing the same thing we were doing 30 years ago, that means we haven't learned anything in 30 years." - 00:55:18-00:55:28 "Learning is not guaranteed. Patrick Montgomery, Author of Baseball's Great Expectations and Barbecue Hall of Famer, Ray Lampe AKA Dr. BBQ, Plus Guest Co-host, Doug Scheiding Patrick Montgomery is an award-winning writer. His latest book is Baseball's Great Expectations: Candid Stories of Ballplayers Who Didn't Live Up to the Hype. The book examines nine players who were once poised for greatness, but as the title clearly states, for whatever reason, their playing careers never reached the levels predicted. Revealed ls an often-overlooked side of professional baseball; the struggles with injury, mental exhaustion, pressure, temptations, and sometimes just being in the wrong place at the wrong time. We often read books which extol successes, but Patrick shows how difficult that success can be to achieve. Ray Lampe AKA Dr. BBQ has been a lover of barbecue since entering his first rib contest in 1982. He quit the family trucking business after 25 years to become a full-time pit-master,but spent 15 years testing different barbequing styles and participating in cookout competitions before making barbecue his full-time career. Inducted into the Barbecue Hall of Fame in 2014, Ray is the author of numerous cookbooks, a judge on many televised cooking shows, a winner of numerous cooking competitions, and a restaurateur. He has witnessed and been a part of the surge in barbecue's enormous growth and popularity and shares these many stories. We are joined by guest co-host, Doug Scheiding. Media Forensics Hub of Clemson University uncovered a Chinese state-sponsored campaign to discredit scientists who say COVID originated from a lab in Wuhan – and escaped virologist Dr. Li-meng Yan is one of their top targets. By churning out thousands of offensive memes and spammy posts, the CCP government aims to discredit its critics and bury conversations under millions of bot accounts and fake profiles on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. The report says China organized “what is sometimes referred to as the 50 Cent Army, a collection of as many as two million social media users which make online comments at the direct behest of the state” and that the operation “has been called by different names by different analysts, including “Spamouflage Dragon“ (by the network analysis firm Graphika) and “Dragonbridge” (by the Google owned cybersecurity firm Mandiant) and has been operating continuously since, at least, April 2017.” Dr. Li-meng Yan (AKA Dr. Yan Limeng, 闫丽梦 or 閆麗夢) is a Chinese virologist known for her publications and interviews alleging that SARS-CoV-2 was made in a Chinese government laboratory.
