Back in September, the stock car racing world was turned upside down when the announcement was made that the 2023 NASCAR All-Star race would be held at the recently revived North Wilkesboro Speedway. On this week's episode of The Dale Jr. Download, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and co-host Mike Davis sit down with the man who helped make the decision, CEO and President of Speedway Motorsports Incorporated Marcus Smith. Devotees of The Download will recognize that this marks Smith's fifth appearance on the show, and his yearly check-in usually provides great insight into some of the upcoming projects in the NASCAR world. Much has changed since Marcus' last visit in May 2021, most notably the passing of his father Bruton, who was a major contributor to the racing world and founder of SMI. Marcus reflects on the difficult process of coming to terms with his father's declining health but is thankful that he lived a long life of 95 years. He also explains how his father got his start in car sales by running a used car lot on his mother's front lawn. Though he was eventually shut down by city officials, his knack for the industry eventually led to him forming Sonic Automotive, the fifth-largest automotive retailer in the country. The interview addresses the rumors surrounding the reconfiguration of Texas Motor Speedway. Dale and Marcus unpack the September Cup race held at the Fort Worth-based track and discuss what can be done to help boost attendance while keeping competitors and teams happy. Marcus explains that with the current grandstand set-up, there are limited changes that can be made to the track's actual configuration. However, alterations can be made to the speedway's profile, much like the recent reshaping of Atlanta Motor Speedway. In fact, with the help of iRacing, they've been able to model potential changes and test through simulation to see what effect they'd have on the racing product. The process was essential to the work done in Atlanta, and the results found in the trial runs were comparable to the actual Cup races held this season. In addition to the changes made to the racing surface at Atlanta, there have been talks of bringing a casino resort to the grounds in an effort to build up the area similar to that of Kansas Speedway. Marcus explains that in order for the plans to go through, there needs to be an amendment made to the Georgia state constitution that would allow for sports gambling, and encourages listeners and supporters of the speedway to be vocal to their local representatives. Another huge topic of discussion was the status of the Nashville Fairgrounds project. Those following along will remember that Dale and Marcus have been huge proponents in bringing NASCAR Cup racing back to the famed oval. Marcus makes clear that while they have been seemingly stuck in place for a while, progress is being made on the initiative.  A glimmer of hope in bringing relics of NASCAR's past back to life has been the return of North Wilkesboro Speedway. Dale and Marcus reflect on the huge success of the recent CARS Late Model Stock Car race at the track and fill listeners in on the changes and upgrades being made to the facility in anticipation of next year's All-Star event. Aside from additional seating being brought in, improvements are being made to the facilities, scoring system, retaining walls, and traffic flow.  The conversation also touches on NASCAR's ongoing television contract discussions and what it means for the tracks and the Race Team Alliance. Tune in for insight from one of the great minds and innovators in the motorsports industry regarding what it takes to run a speedway and what all parties can do to help the sport grow as a whole.  Check out northwilkesborospeedway.com for updates/details. It's winner's week on Door Bumper Clear as Freddie Kraft celebrates Bubba Wallace's victory at Kansas Speedway with Brett Griffin, T.J. Majors, and Xfinity Series race winner Noah Gragson joins the show. They discuss Noah's fifth win of the year, a prank war with former crew chief Dave Elenz, working with crew chief Luke Lambert, moving to the Cup Series next year, his not always so serious approach off the track and how he started racing. Freddie talks us through how Wallace came alive late in the race to take a commanding victory and shares what happened at the after party. Plus, hear how TJ nearly messed everything up. To begin Spot On, Spot Off, the Xfinity Series race restarted with two laps to go in Stage 2 despite reports of rain. The guys debate if the track conditions were safe to make it to halfway and talk about a certain spotter and driver that didn't want it to see go green. Next, the guys discuss the 15 points separating 10th through 15th place in the playoff standings heading into the Bristol Motor Speedway cutoff race. Find out if they think another non-playoff driver can win and how aggressively drivers below the cutoff line need to race. Gragson shares his input on how he expects Bristol to race with the new car and how aggressive playoff drivers might be. Kyle Busch reportedly signed with Richard Childress Racing for next season. The crew applauds RCR's signing, questions the future of Kyle Busch Motorsports, and theorizes where Tyler Reddick will race next year. Then, the gang talks about North Wilkesboro Speedway hosting the All-Star race in 2023. They predict how quickly the race will sell out and discuss FOX wanting the race's location to rotate. Plus, Brett shares his insight on when the 2023 schedule will be released and what tracks could be losing races. Kevin Harvick sounded off on drivers safety concerns with the Next Gen car at Kansas. Gragson explains why he applauds Harvick being outspoken, details crashes he's had in the car this season, and talks about how his concerns about wrecking are impacting his performance. In Reaction Theatre, fans call in to congratulate Bubba and Freddie, ask Noah about his run in with Jeb Burton, and one fan plays a song for Bubba's haters.  Thank you to our presenting sponsor Offerpad and partners Xfinity and RacingUSA.com for making this show possible.   To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Phil and Josh worked on Labor Day to provide E133 of the GSP to the fans and cover a busy motorsports weekend while leading into the start of NFL in 2022.  The guys get into "That Jones Boy from Byron, MI" winning his second Southern 500 along with the 200th victory for the No.43 in Cup Series competition.  In contrast, many of the playoff eligible drivers had issues including William Clyde Elliott II and Kevin Harvick along with the points leading into Kansas. In the XFinity race, Gragson gets his 4th victory of 2022 after last lap contact between Sheldon Creed and Kyle Larson.  Even with the action between those three, AJ Allmendinger gets closer to a possible regular season title.  Speaking of titles, the IndyCar Series ran at Portland with Scott McLaughlin winning his third race and pole of the 2022 season, holding off points leader and teammate Will Power.  However, Power still holds a 20-point lead heading into the season finale at Laguna Seca over Scott Dixon and Josef Newgarden.  Phil and Josh discuss all of the happenings and their thoughts on those still in and those who were eliminated. Formula 1 saw the usual with Max Verstappen winning the Dutch GP, but it was not as straightforward as it has been at most races, with Mercedes having pace and a possibility to win.  Multiple yellows affected the strategy and led to the eventual result, leaving some like Lewis Hamilton pretty unhappy.  Ferrari continues to show why they are closer to Mercedes than Red Bull with their strategy calls and constant errors - mostly focused to Carlos Sainz at Zandvoort.  The biggest news was the notion of Colton Herta being the favorite for a seat at AlphaTauri, if he can get a Superlicense.  Phil and Josh talk about his candidacy along with other silly season tidbits leading into Monza. The Roundup has Phil broaching the NHRA US Nationals, Extreme E in Chile, WEC at Fuji Speedway, WSBK at Magny Cours and Supercars at Pukekohe before Josh returns for the NFL season preview for both the Jacksonville Jaguars and San Francisco 49ers along with their picks for the Superbowl.  Previews and Picks come for the F1 Italian Grand Prix, IndyCar at Laguna Seca, and the NASCAR triple-header at Kansas Speedway before Josh's Sim Segment and Show Close.

Let's follow the yellow brick road to a pot of gold this weekend as NASCAR heads to Kansas Speedway for the second time this season. To start the episode, we're taking a quick look back at Erik Jones's HUGE win at the Southern 500, and discuss what that means for NASCAR. The playoff race has changed, and the Championship Odds look a pretty decent for some drivers, so we talk about who looks god at the moment. Then it's all Kansas talk. We break down the different track stats and data points worth looking at this weekend, and start making some picks on outright winners for Sunday. We're looking to go a little bit longer than the chalky picks from a week ago. Then, in Finishing Position bets, there are some drivers we're getting creative with, to throw money down on them for plus money! In the Head to Head section there are two matchups that stand out above the rest, so it's worth diving fully into those conversations. Finally, in Phil's Fired Up, the Truck Seres is BACK for Friday Night Lights!!! We break down some drivers who are worth throwing money down on and a sportsbook who offers solid Truck Series options.

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver and social media star Hailie Deegan joins Brett Griffin, T.J. Majors and Freddie Kraft to debrief the weekend racing at Kansas Speedway. Hailie opens up about her transition from off-road to asphalt racing, her rise through the NASCAR ranks, and the eye-opening reason for switching manufacturer development programs. First up in Spot On, Spot Off, the group discusses Joey Logano's comments further fueling the feud between William Byron and himself. They talk about whether he's transitioning into the villain role in the garage area and how they expect him to react if Byron retaliates. Kurt Busch earned 23XI Racing's second career win on Sunday and the crew discusses his late-race battle with Kyle Larson. Then, they get into the effect Busch has had on the team and Bubba Wallace. Multiple drivers faced tire failures at Kansas and the group explains why teams' aggressive setups caused the issues. Hailie talks about teams having to weigh the risk versus reward when considering the number of backup parts available. Six Toyotas finished inside the top-10 for the first time since Watkins Glen in 2017. Hear why Denny Hamlin's crew chief Chris Gabehart says their team is the most dangerous 22nd-place points team in history. Plus, the guys discuss where manufacturer parity currently stands. ARCA team owner Billy Venturini went after Drew Dollar for wrecking one of his cars in an interview. Hailie shares why she's on her former car owner's side based on racing around Drew. Finally, Door Bumper Clear producer Jason Schultz tries to explain the confusing Texas Motor Speedway All-Star Race format to the group. They question who at NASCAR is making the decision on the format and what they would do instead. Plus, Hailie shares her thoughts on the need to get younger fans interested in NASCAR.
