We go back to the 1960s, when Black and Asian migrants in Britain were refused service at pubs displaying signs that read “No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs.”In the West Midlands, Punjabi foundry workers created their own spaces, places that offered safety, solidarity, and, later, a new cultural identity. These early “desi pubs” weren't restaurants; they were hubs of resistance. Activists organised inside them, and Bhangra musicians played in makeshift back rooms. In 1965, Malcolm X even walked into Smethwick to see Britain's colour bar for himself, experiencing refusal of service in a local pub that now stands at the centre of this history.Over time, these spaces evolved. Once Punjabis felt safe inside them, food emerged as a defining feature, a fusion of working-class Britain and diasporic Punjab. What began as a refuge became a cultural invention: the mixed grill. This dish, found almost nowhere else in the world, remains tied to the industrial heart of Birmingham, the rhythms of the Bhangra scene, and a community rebuilding itself far from home.Today, as the UK faces rising tensions once again, the story of the desi pub is more relevant than ever. It reminds us how communities resist exclusion and how culture is born in the spaces where people fight simply to belong.

Lindsay Clancy, 34, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, is standing trial for the murders of her three children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 7 months — allegedly strangled with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. She faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation, has pleaded not guilty, and her defense, led by Kevin Reddington, is built around an insanity claim: severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.Cross-examination is where the prosecution's expert stopped having it easy. Dr. Gregory Saathoff, the FBI-affiliated forensic psychiatrist who diagnosed Clancy with bipolar II and testified she was criminally responsible, admitted under Reddington's questioning that he wasn't brought onto this case until January or February of 2026 — well after the killings — and that he didn't even know how much his own university employer got paid for his testimony. Reddington didn't let that sit quietly, either, pressing the point that Saathoff's expert work runs almost exclusively for prosecutors, prisons, and the institutions that write his paychecks.It got more pointed from there. Saathoff confirmed Clancy did tell her husband and mother about homicidal ideation — but when Reddington asked whether she'd complained to doctors, friends, and family about dark, intrusive thoughts of suicide and homicidal ideation more broadly, Saathoff wouldn't concede the homicidal piece. He did admit she kept reaching out for help, and that she told her doctors about dark thoughts and suicidal ideation. What never got asked, notably: whether those thoughts were just thoughts, or whether she experienced them as voices.Saathoff also testified he treated women with postpartum depression back in the 1980s and '90s, background the defense clearly wants jurors weighing against his conclusions today.Clancy is now paralyzed from the waist down after allegedly jumping from a second-story window. Husband Patrick Clancy has relocated to Manhattan. Clancy, 34, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, is accused of strangling her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. She faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation, has pleaded not guilty, and her attorneys are pursuing an insanity defense centered on severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.Reddington didn't ease in. He started with prior cases where courts had ruled Mack unqualified to testify, then moved to money — Mack testified he pulls in several hundred thousand dollars a year doing expert witness work. Asked to define confirmatory bias and then asked point-blank if he'd shown it evaluating Clancy, Mack said no. He testified he met with Clancy in 2026, three years removed from the killings, having already reviewed defense records, DCF documentation, and medical history — the evaluation itself ran roughly eight hours across two doctors and multiple days, including a full day of testing. He also acknowledged the diagnostic split in the case: Drs. Heilbrun, Resnick, and Zeizel diagnosed bipolar 2, another doctor diagnosed bipolar 1, and postpartum psychosis, he noted, isn't a recognized DSM diagnosis at all.Despite the rough cross, prosecutors are still expected to argue Clancy understood what she was doing regardless of her mental state. After the killings, Clancy allegedly attempted suicide by jumping from a second-story window and is now paralyzed from the waist down. Original Air Date: April 2nd, 2026 The Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the case of Trump v. Barbara regarding President Trump's executive order issued on his first day in office, which seeks to limit birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment by denying automatic U.S. citizenship to children born in the United States if their parents are undocumented or present on a temporary basis. Justices from across the ideological spectrum asked pointed questions about the order's interpretation of the phrase "subject to the jurisdiction thereof" in the 14th Amendment and whether the executive branch can unilaterally alter long-standing practice and precedent on citizenship. President Trump attended the arguments in person, the first time a sitting president has done so. Lower courts previously blocked the order as unconstitutional. Today we have an Ask Me Anything episode that focuses on artificial intelligence. For the past year, AI has dominated the headlines. Perhaps because there's so much media and public interest, as well as paranoia, about AI, listeners have been flooding our mailbox with AI-related questions. So, today's AMA is an exclusive focused on artificial intelligence. [00:36:53] A listener asks Ken about repeated public statements by Anthropic's CEO that their AI models, and those expected in the future, are already powerful and dangerous enough to justify concern, while at the same time Anthropic and other leading AI companies are continuing to employ these systems and cautioning governments against regulation that could slow down innovation. The listener asks Ken how to resolve this contradiction. [00:45:18] A listener writes that in a previous AMA, STEM-Talk episode 184, Ken objected to the use of the word hallucination to describe errors made by large-language models and asks Ken to expound on this. [00:53:28] A listener asks Ken whether current AI models are evolving from being fundamentally prediction engines to being able to truly understand and reason, or if they are just becoming better and more convincing prediction engines. [00:59:37] A listener writes to Ken, mentioning that a few years ago, a thousand technology experts and researchers signed a letter urging AI labs and executives to pause the development of highly advanced AI systems and tools. This letter, drafted through the not-for-profit Future of Life Institute, warned that AI developers were locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one, not even their creators, can understand, predict or reliably control. The listener also states that they learned recently that ChatGPT 5 was programmed using an earlier version of ChatGPT. If the concerns of tech leaders are to be taken seriously, the listener wonders if it is a good idea to have earlier versions of ChatGPT programing later versions of ChatGPT? [01:07:45] A listener asks Ken about the process of training smaller AI models from larger models, a process called distillation. The listener asks how this process works and if this is a way for the cost of training large models to benefit everyone. [01:14:56] A listener asks Ken what it means for China's Open Weight GLM 5.2 to be reported to have achieved near parity with Anthropic's Mythos. On several cyber security and vulnerability discovery benchmarks, it seems alarming that GLM 5.2 is operating at roughly 1/6th the cost and remaining openly available for download and deployment. [01:22:34] A listener writes that they recently heard a story about someone who asked an AI whether they should walk or drive to a car wash in order to get their car washed when the car wash was close by their starting location. The AI in this condition recommended that they walk instead of drive. The listener asks why the AI was unable to give the obviously correct answer to a simple common-sense question. [01:29:05] For our final question in this AMA, a listener writes that, recently, nearly 200 researchers and economists signed a statement warning that as AI becomes more powerful it could take over a large share of human work and lead to widespread joblessness. The listener wants to know if Ken would have signed the statement and what he thinks of the statement's three points: One: AI may become radically more powerful over the next 10 years. Two: This could drive an unprecedented transformation of our economy larger than the industrial revolution and over a vastly shorter timeframe, with large scale job displacement. Three: Economists, policy makers, and tech leaders must act now in order to understand the economic impacts of transformative AI and to build the incentives guardrails and institutions need to steer AI in a direction that compliments humans and benefits society.
