Former Major League Baseball pitcher, Steve Trachsel and Chef Jason Morse with help from pitmaster, Doug Scheiding, sling a heaping helping of baseball and barbecue talk on episode 323 Steve Trachsel was a Major League pitcher for 16 years.  Known primarily for his time with the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets, he also played for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Baltimore Orioles.  He first joined us on episode 127 and then again on episode 143 during which he discussed a masterful gem he threw against the Boston Red Sox as he outdueled Pedro Martinez.  In this appearance we discuss the game he pitched on August 26, 2005 as he returned to the rotation after an injury and beat the San Francisco Giants 1-0.  The one run was supplied by David Wright's solo home run in the second inning.  Steve is a huge fan of barbecue and we are joined by Pitmaster, Doug Scheiding as all of us talk baseball and barbecue.  Chef Jason Morse aka Chef J had his first experience grilling and smoking meats when he was a Boy Scout.  His passion was further stoked during childhood visits to the Hawaiian island of Kauai, where his grandfather served in the U.S. Army, exposing him to a culture that honors fire-smoked cuisine.  As a teenager, Jason was frying up tortillas at a Mexican restaurant and honing his knife skills at a steakhouse in the suburbs of Minnesota.  Jason then pursued a culinary degree at Johnson & Wales University.  Chef J serves as Ace Hardware's national chef spokesperson and BBQ expert.  He also runs a culinary consulting business, 5280 Culinary.  He has led Colorado Proud campaign initiatives to promote the quality of locally produced meats and agriculture.  Chef J led a healthy cooking education program for nearly 70,000 Denver, Colorado kids. Yael Potjer spreekt met Tom van Lamoen, lijsttrekker van de Libertaire Partij, over de vraag hoe Nederland eruit zou zien met een radicaal kleinere overheid.Tom pleit voor een samenleving waarin de overheid zich beperkt tot politie, justitie en defensie – de zogeheten nachtwakersstaat. Volgens hem kunnen meer dan de helft van de ministeries worden afgeschaft. Maar is dat wel een goed idee?De Libertaire Partij kijkt anders naar de migratiecrisis dan andere partijen op rechts. Zij willen een asielstop bereiken door de perverse prikkels van de verzorgingsstaat weg te nemen. De grenzen willen ze niet sluiten. Van Lamoen waarschuwt juist voor maatregelen als gezichtsherkennende camera's, die volgens hem kunnen leiden tot een controlestaat.Tom wil een scheiding tussen staat en geld. Dat betekent volgens hem ook dat Nederland uit de euro moet stappen. Aflevering 5/6 Na een scheiding kun je snel in een nieuwe relatie stappen om de pijn te verzachten. Maar experts raden aan: ga eerst met jezelf aan de slag. Wat is jouw rol geweest in het mislukken van je huwelijk? En hoe voorkom je dat patronen zich herhalen? Te gast zijn Aline de Lange, gescheiden na dertien jaar huwelijk, en Helmout Frijns, gescheiden na 25 jaar. Anderhalve week nadat haar man zei te willen scheiden, bleek Aline zwanger. ‘Dat maakte de hele situatie nog veel lastiger.' Helmout beschrijft zijn toestand voor de scheiding als 'een uitgelubberd elastiek'. 'Ik kon voor mijn gevoel maar één kant op en dat was de handdoek in de ring gooien.' Beiden gingen na de scheiding bewust met zichzelf aan de slag. Zo werd voor Helmout duidelijk dat zijn problemen dieper lagen, bij zijn eigen vader. 'Drie jaar geleden heb ik hem echt kunnen vergeven. Op de begraafplaats hardop gezegd dat ik hem vergaf. Toen ging mijn hart meedoen.' Aline besloot om een coach te bezoeken. ‘Wat kan ik doen om ervoor te zorgen dat ik dit in een volgende relatie niet meer ga doen?' Beide gasten benadrukken het gevaar van de schuldvraag. Helmoet: 'Het is heel makkelijk om de schuld bij de ander te leggen. Maar je kunt de ander niet veranderen.' Volgens scheidingsexpert Anje Slootweg is het goed om na scheiding met een professional terug te blikken. ‘Beantwoord die heel belangrijke vraag: wat kan ik hiervan leren over mezelf?' Aflevering 4/6 Een scheiding is niet alleen een breuk tussen twee partners. Er gaat zoveel meer kapot in de kring om je heen. Hoe ga je om met schoonfamilie die je decennia hebt gekend? Welke vrienden kun je behouden en welke raak je kwijt? En hoe kunnen familie en vrienden het beste steunen? Te gast zijn Wijnand, gescheiden na twintig jaar huwelijk, en Anneke, gescheiden van tafel en bed na 43 jaar huwelijk. Anneke's verhaal is best uitzonderlijk. Na haar huwelijk heeft ze nog veel contact met haar voormalige schoonfamilie. Ze gebruikt zelfs nog steeds haar gehuwde naam Van der Griendt. Die kan ze na zo'n lange tijd niet meer los zien van zichzelf. ‘De naam geeft ook aan hoe ik ben vergroeid met mijn schoonfamilie.' Voor Wijnand ligt dat anders: 'In principe was er niet heel veel contact met mijn schoonfamilie. Dus nu heb ik dat ook niet.' Beide gasten benadrukken het belang van echte vriendschap. Wijnand: 'Ik typeer vrienden als een soort vangrail. Met God hebben ze mij eigenlijk op de weg gehouden.' Maar hij verloor ook vrienden, voornamelijk gezamenlijke. ‘Dat was heel verdrietig in een periode waarin je juist mensen om je heen wilt hebben die je er doorheen helpen.' Volgens scheidingsexpert Anje Slootweg is de mooiste steun een neutrale positie. 'Dus niet waarin je aan de kant van een van de twee gaat staan, maar echt onvoorwaardelijk naar iemand luistert.' Wijnand en Anneke vertellen in deze aflevering onder meer over de steun die ze van vrienden hebben ervaren, wat je wel en niet moet doen voor een vriend die in een scheiding zit en hoe je contact onderhoudt met je voormalige schoonfamilie. Aflevering 2/6 Hoe een kerk omgaat met scheiding verschilt sterk. Sommige kerken bieden persoonlijke pastorale zorg, andere zoeken vooral naar een schuldige of proberen de scheiding te voorkomen. Wat heb je nodig van de kerk als je in scheiding ligt?  Te gast zijn Matthea Damsteeg die tijdens haar scheiding lid was van een Gereformeerde Gemeente en Karin van der Valk, lid van een Nederlandse Gereformeerde Kerk. Beiden zijn gescheiden na een huwelijk van 23 jaar. De zorg voor kerkleden die besluiten te scheiden, is voor kerken een uitdaging, zagen beiden. Waar Karin veel steun en begrip ervaarde vanuit haar kerk, had Matthea een tegenovergestelde ervaring. ‘Altijd kwam toch wel weer dat vingertje omhoog van je mag niet scheiden.'  Ze herkennen het patroon dat scheidingsexpert Anje Slootweg in deze aflevering beschrijft: kerken hebben de neiging om te denken in ‘dader' en ‘slachtoffer'. Karin was duidelijk het 'slachtoffer' omdat haar man wegging voor een ander, wat voor haar prettig voelde maar ook ongemakkelijk. ‘Zo zwart-wit is het natuurlijk nooit.'  Daarnaast worden kerken vaak pas ingeschakeld als de beslissing al gevallen is, ziet Anje. Dan valt er weinig meer te redden. Hoe betrek je de kerk wel op tijd? Of is dat de plek van de kerk niet? Matthea en Karin delen in deze aflevering hun ervaringen met de kerk tijdens hun scheiding. Birdnesting klinkt liefdevol: de kinderen blijven in hun vertrouwde huis wonen, terwijl de ouders afwisselen wie er aanwezig is. In theorie lijkt dit de ideale oplossing. Maar hoe werkt het in de praktijk? Marieke mailde ons haar verhaal. Ze schrijft dat het soms voelt alsof ze nergens echt landt: geen relatie meer, maar ook nog geen nieuw leven. Jan Willem (43) heeft sinds zijn scheiding een omgangsregeling om zijn 9-jarige dochter te zien. Dat loopt op z'n zachtst gezegd stroef. Zijn dochter is vaak onverklaarbaar boos op hem en zijn ex voorkomt dat er direct contact is tussen hem en zijn dochter, vooral sinds de dwangsom door de rechter is opgeheven. Hij is ten einde raad.

Episode 287 features the author of A Baseball Gaijin:  Chasing a Dream to Japan and Back, Aaron Fischman and Champion Pitmaster Fred Robles, With Guest Co-host, Doug Scheiding   Aaron Fischman is a sports writer, author, editor and multimedia journalist, who currently hosts the On the NBA Beat podcast, a weekly interview show he helped co-found with Loren Lee Chen and his brother, Joshua Fischman.  His first book, A Baseball Gaijin: Chasing a Dream to Japan and Back is a very entertaining and informative look at the life and baseball career of Tony Barnette, who took a nontraditional route to the Major Leagues.  Barnette started in the MLB's minor leagues, spent six years pitching in Japan for Tokyo's Yakult Swallows, and then at the age of 32 had his first cup of coffee with the Major League's, Texas Rangers.  The book was nominated for the prestigious CASEY Award for best baseball book of 2024. Fred Robles of Rio Valley Meats has been cooking on the competitive barbecue circuit since 2013. Fred is the owner of a butcher shop in Weslaco, Texas.
