Inflatable tanks. Phony uniforms. Fake radio traffic. In early 1944, the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, known as the “Ghost Army,” was founded, and its ragtag collection of artists, Soldiers and engineers oversaw almost two-dozen “deception missions” that saved the lives of an estimated 30,000 Soldiers. In March of this year, their work was recognized with the Congressional Gold Medal. Hosts LTG (Ret.) Leslie C. Smith and SMA (Ret.) Dan Dailey sit down with author and historian Rick Beyer to discuss the story and exploits of the Ghost Army and his decade-long journey to see that the unit received the Gold Medal—and then they are joined by a surviving Ghost Army Soldier, PVT (Ret.) Seymour Nussenbaum. Sadly, Mr. Nussenbaum passed away shortly after our recording. He died on October 5, 2024, at the age of 101. OPERATION BODYGUARD AND DECEPTION IN WORLD WAR II Your field operatives, Dan and Tom, talk with author and historian Rick Beyer about the deception techniques used in the war. Operation Bodyguard and its sub-operation, Operation Fortitude, which helped win the war, are highlighted. Operation Bodyguard was an overall deception operation to assist the Allied Forces in World War II. It is one example of how deception was an important part of the Allied success. Operation Fortitude was designed to deceive Adolph Hitler as to the location of the Allied invasion of Europe. You know the landing came at Normandy. Listen to find out the ruses and locations the Allied Forces used to keep Hitler believing that Normandy was not going to be the landing location. We also talk with Rick about a deception unit called Ghost Army of which Rick co-authored the excellent book, “The Ghost Army of World War II”. Ghost Army deployed just after D-Day, so they weren't directly involved in D-Day. But they are the source of the inflatable tank. Listen to find out what that means Finally, we look at some of the spies who were involved in the deceptions, highlighting double agents who Hitler thought was working for him. Without real spies, we have no spy movies or spy fiction! Tell us what you think So, prior to listening to this episode, did you know about these deceptions? Would you like more episodes like this that talk about real-world spies and their techniques? Let us know your thoughts, ideas for future episodes, and your thoughts on this episode. Just drop us a note at info@spymovienavigator.com. The more we hear from you, the better the show will surely be! We'll give you a shout-out in a future episode! At the height of World War II, American military commanders created a unit dedicated to deception to give Allied forces an advantage on the battlefield. The artists, sound technicians, and radio operators of the so-called Ghost Army remained hidden for decades, but filmmaker Rick Beyer made sure their stories were told. Beyer is a New York Times best-selling author, an award-winning documentary producer, and a long-time history enthusiast. His independent documentary, “The Ghost Army,” premiered on PBS in 2013. It tells the story of an extraordinary WWII unit that used creativity and illusion to fool the Germans. He also co-authored a bestselling book on the unit, and is president of the Ghost Army Legacy Project, a non-profit dedicated to preserving and honoring the legacy of the unit. He spearheaded the lobbying effort that convinced Congress to award the unit a Congressional Gold Medal. Beyer has produced numerous other documentaries and is the author of the popular “Greatest Stories Never Told” series of history books. He has written for Politico, The Hill, the History Channel Magazine, America in WWII and other publications. Beyer also co-hosts the “History Happy Hour” livestream with Chris Anderson, which can be seen live every Sunday at 4:00 p.m. ET on the “History Happy Hour” Facebook and YouTube pages and is now available as a podcast.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In the summer of 1944, a handpicked group of young GIs—including such future luminaries such as Bill Blass, Ellsworth Kelly, Arthur Singer, Victor Dowd, Art Kane, and Jack Masey—landed in France to conduct a secret mission. From Normandy to the Rhine, the 1,100 men of the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, known as the Ghost Army, conjured up phony convoys, phantom divisions, and make-believe headquarters to fool the enemy about the strength and location of American units. Every move they made was top secret and their story was hushed up for decades after the war's end.The unit's official US Army history noted that “its complement was more theatri¬cal than military,” and “It was like a traveling road show that went up and down the front lines imperson¬ating the real fighting outfits.” They pulled off twenty-one differ¬ent deceptions and are credited with saving thousands of lives through stagecraft and sleight of hand. They threw themselves into their impersonations, sometimes setting up phony command posts and masquerading as generals. They frequently put themselves in danger, suffering casualties as a consequence. After holding Patton's line along the Moselle, they barely escaped capture by the Germans in the Battle of the Bulge, and in March 1945 they performed their most dazzling deception, misleading the Germans about where two American divi¬sions would cross the Rhine River. To explore the story of this forgotten subterfuge is today's guest, Rick Beyer, author of “The Ghost Army of World War II: How One Top-Secret Unit Deceived the Enemy with Inflatable Tanks, Sound Effects, and Other Audacious Fakery.” We look at how a traveling road show of artists wielding imagination, paint, and bravado saved thousands of American lives.

In the summer of 1944, a group of artists, visual designers and sound engineers--all of them GIs--began a series of secret operations in occupied France. Their mission: to deceive German forces about the location and size of U.S. military units, using a combination of inflatable vehicles, sound recordings, and “actors” posing as officers. The ranks of the “Ghost Army” included future stars of the worlds of art and design, including Ellsworth Kelly, Bill Blass, Arthur Singer, Victor Dowd, Art Kane, and Jack Masey. Journalist Rick Beyer has chronicled their ingenious exploits in a book and a documentary. December marks the 80th anniversary of the order that created the unit, which remained secret for decades. Dr. Drumm McNaughton interviews Rick Beyer, Executive Chairman at Core Education Services, PBC, about new and innovative ways that smaller colleges and universities can leverage shared services and affiliations to survive and prosper in the future. Podcast Highlights The COVID-19 pandemic has compounded previously existing and systemic problems in higher education, which will require transformational changes. While large universities' economies of scale offer protections against declining enrollments and other issues – at least for now – smaller institutions that are already struggling to survive must act now. As the higher education industry enters what Beyer calls the “consolidation era,” there will be more mergers of necessity and strategic mergers among colleges, as well as the emergence of new affiliations with shared services organizations. GHOST ARMY OF WWII AWARDED CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL Host Dale Throneberry and guest: Rick Beyer, author and filmmaker The existence of the Ghost Army was top secret for more than 50 years until it was declassified in 1996. That's when the public first learned of the creative, daring techniques the Ghost Army employed to fool and distract the enemy about the strength and location of American troops, including the use of inflatable tanks, sound effects, radio trickery and impersonation. The Congressional Gold Medal is Congress's utmost expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions by individuals or institutions. Dating back to the American Revolution, The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest distinction Congress can bestow. There are just nine surviving Ghost Army veterans scattered throughout the U.S. https://www.ghostarmy.org/

In this BONUS EdUp Embedded episode of The EdUp Experience, Dr. Joe Sallustio talks one-on-one with Rick Beyer, Senior Fellow and Practice Area Leader for Mergers & Affiliations with the Association of Governing Boards (AGB). Rick details how the financial model within higher education is in crisis - we are in the consolidation era which includes closures, mergers, affiliations, and the establishment of private systems. If a Board is interested in exploring alternatives to closure, waiting too long could lead to a teachout since the regulatory process for change takes 12-24 months. Rick then details the first three steps to take to future proof against closure - which includes planning simultaneous initiatives to explore partnerships, mergers, and affiliations where a change of control may be necessary. Rick Beyer has a unique combination of experience in higher education and business. I had the pleasure of welcoming author and documentary film maker Rick Beyer to the WRKO studios. Rick has written a series of books that political and history buffs will love, the Greatest Stories Never Told series includes books about Music, War, Science and Presidential history. History isn’t always made by great armies colliding or by great civilizations rising or falling. Sometimes it’s made when a chauffeur takes a wrong turn, a scientist forgets to clean up his lab, or a drunken soldier gets a bit rowdy. That’s the kind of history you’ll find in The Greatest Stories Never Told. This is history candy — the good stuff. Here are 100 tales to astonish, bewilder, and stupefy: more than two thousand years of history filled with courage, cowardice, hope, triumph, sex, intrigue, folly, humor, and ambition. It’s a historical delight and a visual feast with hundreds of photographs, drawings, and maps that bring each story to life. A new discovery waits on every page: stories that changed the course of history and stories that affected what you had for breakfast this morning. In addition to these great books, Rick is currently working on a documentary on an amazing WWII unit that practiced in the art of deception. The story sounds amazing and we’ll have Rick back in when it is complete. To help make that happen, Rick is raising money so he can complete the project, you can learn more and support this fascinating project at Ghost Army. President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, a southern sympathizer and a self-proclaimed modern-day Brutus, on April 14th, 1865 (five days after the end of the Civil War). Booth snuck into Lincoln's viewing Booth at the Ford's Theater while Lincoln was watching "Our American Cousin" and shot him in the back of the head. Booth then jumped down onto the stage and ran out the back door. The ensuing manhunt eventually caught up with him in the swamps of the Potomac River. He was shot, and his co-conspirators were hanged. The event has many interesting stories associated with it:Lincoln had a dream in which he walked into the East Room of the White House and saw a casket. He asked the soldiers why there was a casket and the soldiers told him that the President had been assassinated. He had the dream three days before being assassinated.Robert Todd Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln's son, stood by his father's body as he passed away. Strangely, Robert Todd Lincoln would also stand by the sides of Presidents Garfield and McKinley (both shot by assassins) as they lay dying.Robert Todd Lincoln once fell onto the train tracks but was saved by Edwin Booth, John's brother.Boston Corbett, the soldier who fatally wounded Booth, shot him in the exact same spot that Booth shot Lincoln. There are also several conspiracy theories about the Lincoln Assassination:Vice President Johnson indirectly communicated with Booth on the day of the assassination. He stood to gain the most from the death of Lincoln.Confederate Secretary of State Judah Benjamin might have ordered the assassination of the opposing head of state for tactical reasons. Benjamin destroyed all of his records after the surrender, and then fled to England and never returned.Secretary of War Edwin Stanton disliked Lincoln for his moderate stance on many issues. Stanton prevented Ulysses Grant (and his military escort) from attending "Our American Cousin" with Lincoln (and potentially saving his life). He also lowered security on the bridge that Booth used to flee into Maryland. He also destroyed a few pages of Booth's diary before it was used as evidence in court.
