What if you could fly right now to Ukraine? Or Iraq? If the thoughts make you pale, take a breath and listen to Rollie Peterkin, a great friend of Spanny and of this show (this is his fourth episode!). Rollie is recording from Ukraine's capital Kyiv, and he supplies first-person nuances missing from the news. He does the same in praising the hospitality in Iraq … while noting that the overseas perception of the U.S. as a whole is also sadly skewed toward danger and menace. Enjoy this truly global perspective. ... Rollie Peterkin is a former Penn wrestler and MMA fighter in Peru.
Here's a classic friend-of-a-friend episode. The Spaniard's previous guest, Rollie Peterkin, urged a talk with his fellow Penn wrestler and graduate Ben Reiter, and it's a great one. Ben tells Spanny how his family's strong wrestling tradition helped them all through tragedy and how his drive to help others led him to humanitarian work in Peru. While there he also fought professionally, persevered to learn Spanish and ultimately formed a family that now lives in Philadelphia, where Ben works with the organization Beat the Streets to aid at-risk youth. ... If the name Rollie Peterkin sounds familiar, that might be because he's the first FOUR-TIME podcast guest of The Spaniard. With one more appearance, he wins a trip around the world! We can safely offer that because it's one prize that he doesn't need, since he travels internationally all the time. Case in point: He recorded this episode from a bunk in a hostel in Kosovo. He tells Spanny about trusting locals everywhere … learning languages … eating on a haphazard schedule … paying bills with a combination of mobile jobs … and much more. … Support this podcast > Become a member of Spaniard School.

One good thing that the COVID quarantine brought us is Rollie Peterkin's new podcast ”The Divergent Path.” The name comes from Rollie's twisty-turny background (covered during his first appearance on Episode #146) of Ivy League D1 wrestling, Wall Street, pro MMA fighting in Peru and world travel. This time, Rollie and Spanny trade thoughts on podcasting … evolving a personal style … placing limits on emulating role models … not being held back by perfectionism … and more. ... In SSS8, we go all in Spanish. Former podcast guest Rollie Peterkin (#146) returns for another interview, except this time, it's done in Spanish. We talk his journey of learning Spanish and his international travels. We touch on grammar, culture and even get technical on how Spanish differs in Spain and Peru. Whether you're a Spanish newbie or fluent, you'll enjoy this interview. I offer several different strategies for listening (and learning) in the intro. Want me to teach something specific? Rollie Peterkin was a wrestler through college, and took a cushy job on Wall St to start his career. But a chance encounter led him to Peru, where he became a professional MMA fighter.
Today’s guest is Rollie Peterkin, and he has one of the most interesting, insane and inspiring life stories of anyone I’ve ever talked with. I don’t want to give anything away because his story is that good but know that Rollie was an Ivy League wrestler who graduated and started trading bonds on Wall Street. Rollie was doing very well and making good money, but his life completely changed when he took a trip to Peru to visit a college friend… He is now an author and has a YouTube Channel about travel, living abroad and meeting new people. On Today’s Episode, Rollie and I Discuss: Telling coworkers, friends, and family, he was quitting his job on Wall Street to fight in Peru Rollie’s first professional fight The story of Rollie getting stuck in a swamp in the Amazon What Rollie has learned from taking a crazy route in life And much more… Subscribe: iTunes | Stitcher Visit https://www.ubpath.com/ for a full breakdown and my 3 Big Takeaways Rollie’s Book: https://www.amazon.com/Cage-Escaping-American-Dream/dp/1514294206 Rollie’s Website: http://www.rolliepeterkin.com/ You can find Rollie at: YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/Rolliepeterkin Twitter: @RolliePeterkin Instagram: rolliepeterkin
Say that you're hiking in the Ukraine and come across a young American YouTuber. You fall into conversation and learn that he's taking time off from teaching English in Spain. Before that, he was a professional fighter. Before that, a Wall Street bond trader. Before that, the Ivy League, where he was nearly an All-American wrestler. Would you not leave that hike with your head spinning? Well, you're in luck: You don't have to buy boots and a ticket to the Ukraine. Just listen to this conversation between overlapping-life-story buds Rollie Peterkin and The Spaniard.

What began as an interview request talking about a book morphed into a two-part series with former Penn wrestler Rollie Peterkin. A world traveler, Peterkin gave up his dream of working on Wall Street to turn to the world of Mixed Martial Arts. But Peterkin didn't just drop his suit and tie off at the cleaners and run down to the local boxing club. He packed up and moved South -- like South America South, landing with a friend in Peru. A few amateur fights later, Peterkin turned pro and the story of "Escaping the American Dream" became a reality. Peterkin now has a book called "The Cage: Escaping the American Dream" which is available on Amazon. Part 1 of this series breaks down the journey and the drive to write the book and explains how Peterkin ended up an English teacher in the Canary Islands. Part 2, coming out following this episode, will feature some of Peterkin's stories from the road and the past, including explaining his time at Blair Academy.
