The Learning Leader Show with Ryan Hawk Go to www.LearningLeader.com for full show notes This is brought to you by Insight Global. If you need to hire 1 person, hire a team of people, or transform your business through Talent or Technical Services, Insight Global's team of 30,000 people around the world have the hustle and grit to deliver. www.InsightGlobal.com/LearningLeader Tom Ryan is the head wrestling coach at Ohio State University. In college, he wrestled for perhaps the greatest wrestling coach of all time, Dan Gable, at Iowa, where he was a two-time Big Ten champion and a two-time NCAA All-American. As a coach at Ohio State, he's won numerous national coach of the year honors, has coached more than 75 All-Americans, and led the Buckeyes to a national championship in 2015. We filmed this in his office in Columbus, OH, after spending the morning watching some of his championship wrestlers practice. It was one of the coolest days I've had in a long time. Notes: “My first workout after driving from Syracuse to Iowa was a soul-cleanser. I collapsed in my car outside the arena. I couldn't stop crying.” "It was a line in the sand moment for me. Where are you going or staying? Because I could have turned around, I could have went right back. But it was this sense of knowing that you were in the right place." It's amazing that Tom decided to leave Syracuse with no guarantee of even making the team at Iowa, let alone a scholarship. He shows up on day 1, and Coach Gable didn't even know who he was! Crazy. And then he goes on to earn his spot and become an All-American. Competitive Spirit from Early Age: "There's certainly an element of competitive spirit... even in second grade, we were on the playground... if you lose, you're fighting somebody. You just wanna win, you wanna win everything you do." Why go to Iowa? The Will to Be Great – "I wanted to be elite at something. And by trial and error, it was almost trial and error... I wasn't gonna end my career with not knowing how high I could climb." Key Learnings from Dan Gable: Emotional Control – "He wasn't a yeller. He wasn't a screamer... The reason why he didn't need to yell was his competence." Focus on Situation, Not Person – "It was never personal... He would focus on the situation and not you as a person. You never felt attacked. It was just bluntly, your single leg needs improvement." Balance of Freedom and Accountability – "Too much freedom. Not good... You can drive someone crazy with discipline and rituals and rules... It's just this happy medium." One of the most emotional moments in my 10+ years of recording this podcast, Tom shared the story of the day his 5-year-old son, Teague, had a heart attack and tragically passed away. The room went silent. And Tom went deep into the impact that it has had on him and his family. This is something I cannot imagine happening. I am grateful that Tom was willing to share and be so vulnerable. I love Tom Ryan, and I am lucky to have been in Columbus with him. The interview with Ohio State: "I wasn't their first choice... But ultimately, I was a leader that had learned. I learned under the best." He prepared extensively, attacked his weaknesses proactively, and wasn't afraid to discuss his faith. Chosen vs. Unchosen Suffering – The concept of "chosen suffering" came after experiencing unchosen suffering (losing Teague). "Wrestling has never brought me to my knees... I never got there in wrestling... but when I lost Teague in 2004, that I referred to as unchosen suffering." Chosen Suffering = Deep Love – "Chosen suffering is a fancy word for love because you will suffer the most for the things you love the most." The willingness to endure difficulty stems from profound love for what you're pursuing. Traits of Elite Performers: Ungodly Effort – "In all studies ever performed on elite behavior... one is an ungodly effort. And I think effort stems from... effort over time is a byproduct of deep love." High Capacity to Learn – Elite athletes have exceptional skill development abilities Living in Truth – "The capacity to live in truth. To really be honest with yourself and be okay with it... really strong self-assessment." Daily Discipline – "The discipline to do it daily... to work on your shortcomings and really be good enough to look in the mirror and say, I love you, but you got some problems." Being Coachable – "Most people wanna be coached until they're getting coached." Great performers actively seek feedback, while good ones want to be left alone. Three-Pronged Leadership Philosophy: Example – Walk the walk and display the behaviors you want to see Truth in Love – "Too much truth can demoralize someone... too much love, you're patronizing me. Stop it. Gimme the truth." Embracing Pain and Suffering – "We're gonna make decisions that weren't right... and we're gonna accept them and we're gonna grow from them." The 3 Success Pillars: Your Mind - Internal you. Where your thoughts originate. Your Relationships - Who you allow to influence your decisions. Your Environment - The setting that will build you or break you. The world doesn't care what we're after, nor does it care about our principles. It doesn't care about you or me, nor will it change for us. It doesn't owe us anything. The world is heading in a direction, spinning on its axis, and there's little we can do to change that. What we can change, however, is what we do. We can control our direction. We must continuously develop our core and worldview to help us navigate the temptations of the world. What happened on the morning of April 23, 2024? Coach Ryan had been on his way to OSU for an early morning workout with colleagues when his SUV, traveling at about 65 miles per hour, struck the semitrailer. Physical Trauma vs. Emotional Trauma – "When we lost Teague, I was healthy, I was physically healthy, I was mentally healthy... when I hit this tractor trailer at full speed... the physical trauma that occurred was surreal. And I wasn't ready." "I went into a terrible depression... I was sad when I lost my son, but I wasn't depressed... But in this, I was suicidal for a little bit." Coach Ryan openly shared his mental health struggles with family and got help. The #1 indicator of sustained success is emotional control. Two-word mantra — keep working. Physical Suffering as Mental Training – "Every single time I bike, there comes a moment in the bike ride where I realize I'm a sissy... there's a humbling, there's humility piece that you get from suffering." Choose the Hard Thing - "I can always come up with an excuse why I'm not gonna do squats... And then I have to pause and say, dude. Get under the bar... getting under the bar... builds confidence for everything else in life." (that was from me) Discipline as a Superpower – "Discipline is a superpower. It's available to everybody." The transferable skill of choosing difficulty when you don't want to.

He had a self-checkout long before Walmart and Target and he still updates his telephone hotline with garden patch conditions and produce availability. Just call 605-693-4871. Meet Sanderson Gardens owner Jan Sanderson, the Rhubarb King and developer of the Sanderson Red rhubarb variety. A visit to Sanderson Gardens on the I-29 corridor just four miles east of Brookings, South Dakota, can mean a quick stop for a pail of strawberries, or hours long in the pumpkin patch letting the kids find the perfect jack-o-lantern and play on the playgrounds, taking fall family photos and enjoying a picnic in the cool fall air. For nearly five decades, generations of families have come to Sanderson Gardens for asparagus, strawberries, rhubarb, raspberries, aronia berries, pumpkins and more. It's a mostly U-pick commercial garden, but they try to make some pre-picked produce available in the mornings. We talk about how technology has changed the way he gets the word out about what's available and how you can best pick/harvest strawberries, rhubarb, asparagus, raspberries, pumpkins, and aronia berries. Sanderson Gardens supplies fruit to a handful of local wineries and rhubarb roots and horseradish to most seed catalog companies in the country, like Gurney's Seed and Nursery. You'll learn what Jan's dad and an experimental rhubarb patch being plowed up at South Dakota State University had to do with the beginning of Sanderson Gardens. He also shares an interesting story about how he expanded his rhubarb crop in a way that people in a 3-state area had a hand in—in what is now one of the largest rhubarb patches (5-6 acres) in the Midwest. Jan is a three-time state champion high school wrestler who earned a full-ride scholarship to University of Iowa. He was coached by NCAA national champion, world gold medalist and Olympic gold medalist, Dan Gable. Jan was a team co-captain and a two-time all-American and two-time Big Ten individual champion. After graduating, he went on to coach wrestling and teach special education in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. So why did Mr. Sanderson trade the wrestling mat and his classroom to run his own South Dakota, mostly U-pick, commercial gardens 47 years ago? You're about to find out. Learn more about Sanderson Gardens on their website and follow them on Facebook. I also posted a rhubarb custard pie recipe from Jan and photos on randomsweets.com. Danny is from New Lenox, Illinois and attended Providence Catholic High School, which is also Kevin's alma mater. He actually helped coach special teams for PC Kevin's senior year. Danny found his way on to the team by attending the Iowa Special teams summer camp, and having a self confidence like no other. He tells the story of his naïve assumptions about how easy it would be for him to play and start for the Hawks. In the line of Long Snappers, it was him, then Andy Schultz, the Kreiter, then Kluver. He discusses learning to snap, and eventually making his way on to the field, as well as his philosophy within the specialist meeting room and carrying on the tradition that Baker and Kaeding set before him. We talk about his favorite memories from wearing the black and gold, talking crap to punt returners, going back and forth with Coach Doyle, and more. Then on the back end we talk about his unique position in the Hawkeye community as he is married to Dan Gable's daughter. We talk about his time around Gable, the time he asked Dan to train him for a wrestling tournament, legendary Gable Tales, and more!If you love the show and want to show support, tell your friends! One of this week's opponent in basketball is Iowa State, so Brion summarized the games played from 1910 through 1935. Iowa is 48-28 (63% win) all-time. Fran McCaffery is 6-7 (46%) all-time vs the Cyclones. For comparison, Tom Davis was 8-5 (61.5%) all-time. The first game wasn't played until 1910. They played frequently (sometimes twice a year) through 1921, then restarted in 1933. They played again in 1935, then took a 35-year gap between games. They restarted the series in 1970, and have played almost every year since then. Iowa won the first 12 games, then Iowa State won in 1917, but Iowa won 7 more straight. The series became more competitive after the initial Iowa dominance. No team had won more than 3 straight except for Lute Olson winning 5 straight from 1978-1983. He also discussed the different venues where they played in Iowa City and Ames. Iowa State played at Margaret Hall Gymnasium from 1907-1913, State gymnasium from 1913-1946, the Iowa State Armory from 1946 to 1971, then Hilton Coliseum starting in December 1971. Iowa played in the Old Armory (Armory #1) from 1905 to 1922, where the current Communications Building resides near the Old Capitol. They moved to another Armory (#2) from 1922 to 1926 while the Field House was being built. It was located just west of the Field House in the current UI Hospital near Kinnick Stadium. They moved into the Field House in 1927 and stayed until Jan 1983 when Carver-Hawkeye Arena opened. Adam Haluska started his basketball career at Iowa State before transferring to play at Iowa for his final 3 seasons. He earned 1st Team All-Big Ten in 2007, and was an academic All-American. He was drafted in the 2nd round by the Charlotte Hornets in 2007. Dan Gable needs no introduction. He was a national champion wrestler at Iowa State, and won a gold medal in the 1972 Olympics. He took over as head coach at Iowa in 1976, and won 15 national titles and 21 Big Ten Champions before retiring in 1997. Music: Soothsayer by BucketheadPart two of Lee Kemp Podcast. Leroy (Lee) P. Kemp, Jr. (born Darnell Freeman; December 24, 1956) is a former American freestyle and folkstyle wrestler. Kemp would achieve success at the high school, collegiate, and international levels.Kemp started wrestling in only the 9th grade at Chardon High School, in Chardon, Ohio and by the end of his high school career had compiled two undefeated seasons, while winning two Ohio state titles. His first state title included wins over the defending state champion and the previous years' state runnerup. Shortly after graduating from high school, Kemp was one of only four American Junior wrestlers that recorded a dual meet win against a tough Junior Soviet team on their Ohio stop of an eight city United States tour, which resulted in 80 total matches being contested. Lee also won the prestigious Junior National Freestyle Tournament in July of that same year defeating a future 3-time NCAA Champion in the finals. While competing for the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Kemp was a four-time NCAA Division I National finalist, winning the championship three times and placing 2nd, on a split referee's decision, as a true freshman at 18 years old. Lee recorded losses to only three wrestlers in his collegiate career. His last college loss was in the NCAA finals as a freshman, posting 110 wins and no losses against collegiate competition during his last three years, which included the historic win over the legendary Dan Gable in November of Lee's sophomore year.[1]Kemp was America's first three-time World Champion, winning his first title in 1978 at age 21, establishing him as the youngest American world champion ever, a distinction he held for 30 years. Lee was a four-time World Cup Champion, 7-time United States Freestyle National Champion and was a heavy favorite for gold earning a berth on the 1980 United States Olympic Freestyle Wrestling Team, but was unable to compete because of the U.S. boycott of the Olympics.Kemp was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum in 1990. While at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, where he was one of the freestyle coaches for the U.S., he became just the fifth American to be inducted into the United World Wrestling (formerly known as FILA) Hall of Fame.[2][3]Kemp is the subject of a film documentary, entitled Wrestled Away: The Lee Kemp Story, on his life scheduled for theatrical release Summer 2019, and is the co-founder and President of LKNutrition (formerly FORZA Technologies), a nutritional supplement company. LKNutrition (formerly FORZA) was the official corporate sponsor of USA Wrestling and its national teams.

In episode 32 of the Athletor Podcast, we are honored to host the luminary Jim Gibbons, a figure who has profoundly marked the wrestling world with his achievements both as an NCAA Champion wrestler and a coach. Now, as one of the most distinguished voices in broadcasting, he continues to cast a significant influence over the sport. In this enlightening conversation, we unpack the magic behind Jim's docuseries "The Dual," which transports viewers back to the adrenaline-charged atmosphere of the 1986 Iowa vs. Iowa State dual meet. A historic event where an incredible lineup of athletes clashed, culminating in 16 National Championships that were eventually won by the 20 competitors featured. Jim graciously takes us on a walk down memory lane, sharing vibrant snapshots of the personalities that graced the mat during this iconic dual. But it doesn't end there, as we delve deep into the veins of the fierce Iowa vs. Iowa State rivalry, a competition steeped in tradition, passion, and unyielding spirit. We also navigate through the evolving tapestry of the sport of wrestling, witnessing the myriad of changes that have occurred over the years, through Jim's experienced eyes. As a coach with a proven track record, Jim opens up about his strategy for instilling a kind of irrational confidence in his wrestlers. And of course, no discussion with Jim would be complete without tapping into the well of wisdom he acquired from the legendary figure in the wrestling world, coach Dan Gable.
Mitch Peyton emulated the wrestlers from West Delaware High School from a very early age, and he knew exactly who he wanted to be when he grew up. The ferocious type of wrestler Mitch wanted to become was only matched by a chivalrous attitude off of the mat and away from the intense competition. Hear how Mitch's wrestling legacy almost ended after high school, until a simple question from legendary two-time NCAA national champion, world gold medalist, and Olympic gold medalist, Dan Gable persuaded Mitch to attend the University of Iowa to pursue a career in a black and gold singlet. Life in the sport of wrestling didn't close with a picture-perfect fairytale ending, but the lessons learned and growth received from his journey propelled Mitch, giving him the confidence to chase any dream. Find out how Mitch used that confidence and turned his experience into a new venture wherein children not raised on a farm can have the experience of owning and showing cattle via his Legacy Cattle Company. Peyton, who is now an assistant wrestling coach at West Delaware, suggests there are analogies between the sport of wrestling and showing cattle; moreover, he suggests that these similarities have tremendous value for young people.

Every listener to this podcast knows that a game of catch is rarely just a game of catch. Playing catch is an opportunity to connect with someone, whether you spend that time in conversation or just listening to the pop of the ball hitting the leather. Few understand this more than this week's guest, Kevin Negaard. Negaard's journey is nearing his goal of 365 consecutive days of catch. This endeavor has connected him with hundreds of partners, has spanned two continents, and led to two injections in his shoulder. Kevin Negaard was inspired by our guest Ethan Bryan's book A Year of Playing Catch. Once he had the idea, he started building a list of who he'd like to play with and even connected with Ethan Bryan. Some of his highlights included “turning 2” with Ozzie Smith, playing catcher for Dan Gable, introducing baseball to members of the Maasai Tribe in Africa, and having a toss alongside over a hundred people at the city park in Dyersville during the Field of Dreams game. The most challenging issue for Negaard has actually been the social media posts each day. Playing catch, even throwing a ball off a wall by himself, has always been a pastime for Kevin Negaard. This project, though, has created opportunities to connect with neighbor kids, his wife, and the ability to reconnect with his youth. As important as that process has been for him, he has also raised thousands of dollars for The Miracle League. This organization believes “Every Child Deserves A Chance to Play Baseball," and we couldn't agree more. The Moonlight Graham Show knows that a game of catch is always more than a game.

starting Sept 15 all podcasts will be exclusively on Rokfin.com/timgaither. Lee Kemp is a 3x NCAA champion and 4x finalist. He lost on referees decision as a true freshmen. Perhaps even more amazing is that three years prior he was 11-8 as a HS sophomore. He closed out his NCAA career with 101 straight wins and he beat the legend Dan Gable as an 18 yr old. He went on to win 3 World titles, winning his first at 21, which made him the youngest World champ in U.S history, a distinction he held for 38 years. He was a member of the 1980 Olympic team that boycotted when he was heavily favored to win Gold. We talk about that travesty and much more. It was an honor to talk to him, he's a wealth of knowledge about wrestling and life.
This week we talk with Phil Merrill. Phil was a high school rival of Tommy's, in just about every sport. We discuss some of the coaching experiences he's had, some impactful things he's seen as a fan and coach, and we talk about chopping wood for Dan Gable.
One thing that we love about sports is the way that no matter how old we get, sports stay the same. Depending on where we are in our lives, we can be the athlete, the fan, the coach, or even the dad. This week's Moonlighter has a perspective on wrestling from every angle. The former high school and D1 wrestler now wears the hats of coach and dad. Adam Fellers has seen it all and has a take on just about everything. Adam Fellers grew up in Fort Dodge and made a name for himself as part of a proud Dodger wrestling tradition. During his junior year, he started to really stand out in the varsity lineup. After a 3rd place finish at the 2000 state wrestling tournament, Fellers was one of the top dogs in the class of 2001. He was recruited by the Hawkeyes while on his way to a 36-1 senior campaign that ended with another bronze medal in Des Moines. Adam Fellers joined the Hawkeyes at a tumultuous time though. Jim Zalesky had just taken over for Dan Gable and though the Hawkeyes were still bringing in top recruits, like Fellers's roommate Steve Mocco, the program wasn't living up to expectations. Fellers had to adjust to the level of competition and intensity of a D1 program but was regularly making his way into the lineup during his junior and senior campaigns. While his career on the mat may have wrapped up a while ago, Fellers might spend more time in the sport now than ever before. As a coach, Fellers is a part of the staff at Sebolt Wrestling Academy in Jefferson, IA which includes another former Fort Dodger, Justin McClintock, head coach TJ Sebolt, and several top-notch coaches, Fellers gets to work with the most talented wrestlers in and around Iowa. Sebolt is currently turning out champions at the high school and youth levels like no one else. When he isn't in the room with some of the top athletes in the state, he is serving the sport as a super fan and promoter through outlets like IA Wrestle and Hagar's Happy Hour with Tony Hagar. You can find Adam Fellers on several podcasts and YouTube channels talking about the world of wrestling and a host of other topics. His most important role in the sport though is as a fan and supporter of his own sons. When it comes to them, he sets aside his coach's whistle and focuses on just being a dad. Spending a lifetime on and around the mat has given Adam Fellers a lot of life lessons and close friendships that he is more than happy to talk about.
Carl Adams was a 2x NCAA champion for Iowa State, where his teammates included the great Dan Gable and Chris Taylor. Carl went on to coach at the division one level for over 30 years. Carl is also the inventor of the ADAM Takedown Machine and has authored several books. Carl is also a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Dan Gable is the most well known name in the wrestling world. He won an incredible 181 matches in a row in high school and college, with his only defeat coming in his very last match in the NCAA finals his senior year... "And then I got good." Gable says... At the 1972 Munich Olympics, the then Soviet Union announced one goal: We will find a wrestler who will defeat Dan Gable. They were unsuccessful. He went on to win the '72 Olympic Games without surrendering a single point. Astonishingly, these accolades are trumped by Gable's coaching accomplishments. As the University of Iowa's all-time winningest coach from '76 to '97, Gable won 15 NCAA Team Titles (9 of which were consecutive), 21 Big Ten Team Titles (Every single year he was head coach) and produced 152 All-Americans, 45 National Champions, 106 Big Ten Champions , and 12 Olympians including 3 Bronze Medalists, 1 Silver Medalist, and 4 Gold Medalists. Dan's philosophies and coaching methods have helped create and even save many great men. His legacy is titanic, bur as you will see, his heart is even bigger. In this episode we will discuss everything from receiving The Presidential Medal of Freedom, Donald Trump wrestling in High School, and making wrestlers run 15 miles weekly in the winter in Iowa, to Dan's time on The Joe Rogan Experience, the importance of having Faith in God, and how to Dan got the most out of his athletes. It was an immense pleasure to speak with one of my heroes. I hope you enjoy this episode.❤️ Thank you to this show's sponsors!
