This episode brings together the science, the medicine, and the lived experience behind BRCA mutations. Emily Goldberg, JScreen's Director of Genetic Counseling Services, breaks down what these mutations are, how they're inherited, and what the actual cancer risks look like. Dr. Melissa Frey, a GYN oncologist at Cornell who works closely with high-risk families, walks us through what happens after someone tests positive — from screening to risk-reducing surgeries to the big conversations around fertility and timing. We also hear from Heather Boussi, who shares her powerful story of living with both BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. She talks about diagnosis, surveillance, surgeries, and how this all shaped her family-building decisions. Lastly, we look at what BRCA means for men, how that journey differs, and why PGT can still be an option. If you or someone you love is navigating this, we close with places to turn for support: JScreen, Sharsheret, I Was Supposed To Have A Baby, and Stardust (links below). It's a mix of expertise, honesty, and heart — the kind of conversation so many people wish they had heard earlier, especially when faced with such difficult decisions. Step inside the chilling world of Dr. H. H. Holmes, the suave con man, medical fraudster, and architect of America's most infamous “Murder Castle.” In this Early Release episode, we peel back the polished veneer Holmes wore so well to expose the predator beneath. Aman who turned charm into a weapon, bodies into profit, and opportunity into terror. From his eerie medical-school schemes and corpse-insurance scams…to the labyrinthine Englewood building designed to confuse, isolate, and kill…to the devastating murder of Benjamin Pitezel and the cross-country hunt for his missing children…this episode follows the full arc of a man who reinvented himself with every handshake and erased those who trusted him.Thank you to Patreon member Tiffany M. for the suggestion!!
The city of Chicago owns thousands of vacant lots, and more than 80 percent of those parcels are in communities where the population is at least 80 percent Black. That's according to a report from the Institute for Housing Studies at DePaul University. Residents and organizations are investing in these lots to improve the community. Last episode, we learned about how complicated it can be for individual homeowners to buy a vacant lot in their neighborhood. Today, we focus on an organization that is acquiring these types of spaces. Anton Seals, Jr. is the co-founder of Grow Greater Englewood, an organization that is doing innovative work on abandoned areas on the South Side. In the name of land sovereignty and building lasting community, he and his colleagues are transforming vacant lots into urban farms, a farmers market and a nature trail.

About Lori Logan:Lori Logan is the president and CEO of NASCO, where she leads with a vision to merge innovation with a strong foundation in healthcare. Based in Englewood, Colorado, she brings over two decades of leadership across healthcare's payer, provider, and technology sectors. Known for her curiosity, analytical mindset, and collaborative leadership, Lori has consistently driven growth, transformation, and measurable impact. Her career includes leading multimillion-dollar projects, overseeing teams of hundreds, and managing large-scale integrations and mergers, and acquisitions (M&A) initiatives. Previously, she held senior roles at athenahealth, Geneia, Paladina Health, TriZetto, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, and McKesson—where she launched groundbreaking products and strategies that improved care coordination and operational efficiency. Recognized for her strategic acumen and results-driven approach, Lori has earned industry accolades, including the TriZetto CEO Pinnacle Award and the Thomson Reuters Healthcare Advantage Award. Her mission remains clear: to reimagine healthcare and create healthier outcomes and lives.Things You'll Learn:Legacy infrastructure hinders scalability; health plans require a modern administrative “chassis” to package benefits, administer payments, and operationalize innovation. This goes well beyond traditional claims systems.Analytics must merge claims, clinical, and engagement data with medical economics precision. Insights then have to reach providers and advocates so care is both effective and reimbursable.A significant amount of value now resides outside of claims in disease management, digital tools, and condition management programs. Members need clear navigation and transparency on what they have, where to go, and what it costs.Provider enablement is essential for value-based care. Success depends on aligned incentives, shared operations, coaching, and trust between plans and providers.Strategic investments should prioritize scalable administration, robust operations, and data pipelines. These foundations let plans attribute value, manage risk, and drive affordability at scale.Resources:Connect with and follow Lori Logan on LinkedIn.Follow NASCO on LinkedIn and explore their website.

Over the course of this conversation, we dive into the journey and leadership philosophy of Pieter Van Ry, who leads both South Platte Renew and the City of Englewood's water utility. Pieter shares how he transitioned from a consultant in stormwater management to a dual-role leader overseeing drinking water and wastewater services for over 300,000 people. His story is one of transformation—both personal and organizational. We explore how he manages the two distinct utilities, which are legally and operationally separate. South Platte Renew serves a regional area through a joint venture between Englewood and Littleton, while the Englewood utility is more localized. Pieter splits his time equally between the two, relying on strong deputy leadership to maintain continuity and operational excellence. One of the main challenges both entities faced was decades of underinvestment. Pieter focused early on building long-term financial models and sustainable funding mechanisms. He emphasizes transparency with policymakers, using clear data to show the long-term consequences of decisions. His team successfully leveraged federal funding like WIFIA and the Drinking Water Revolving Fund to modernize infrastructure while raising rates carefully and with community backing—even during COVID.On the drinking water side, the transformation has been more severe. The utility was decades behind in staffing, technology, and systems. Simple operations like backwashes were still being done with stopwatches. Today, that same utility is removing all 3,000 of its lead service lines and has increased staff by 40%.Leadership is a central theme. Pieter believes in fostering an environment where people love coming to work. That mindset ties directly into performance, innovation, and long-term success. He embraces delegation, transparency, and accountability as leadership cornerstones and promotes a culture that allows for calculated risks and learning through failure.A key outcome of this leadership approach is the development of PARC (Pilot and Research Center), an open innovation platform designed to plug researchers, universities, and technology companies directly into the treatment process. The idea is to invest early in flexible infrastructure—across liquid, solids, and gas systems—so external innovators can rapidly pilot their solutions. PARC enables Pieter's team to stay ahead of looming regulations and drive customer value through smarter, cheaper, and more sustainable treatment technologies. As we wrap up, Pieter reflects on his legacy. He wants his departure to be a “blip”—a sign that he's built resilient systems, not just personal authority. And on public trust, he's clear: acknowledge mistakes, transparently share progress, and always circle back to communicate results. Trust, like infrastructure, is built over time—and it's earned through action.City of Englewood Utilities: https://www.englewoodco.gov/government/city-departments/utilitiesSouth Platte Renew: https://southplatterenewco.gov/ Aquasight Website: https://aquasight.io/

Send us a textOctober isn't just National Pizza Month, it's also National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Brewability is a pizzeria founded by Tiffany Fixter, a former special education teacher. We speak with Fixter and pizzeria marketer and manager Jess Runge about how they are serving up pizza and opportunities in their community of Englewood, Colorado.Brewability proudly employs 26 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including individuals who are blind, deaf and have other impediments to finding employment. Fixter was motivated to start the business after seeing the shocking lack of job opportunities for adults with disabilities. Nine years later, they have a waitlist of over 900 people who want to work there. They've built a supportive and empowering environment where employees and students can shine. They've also developed fantastic training programs with visual aids and clear procedures to ensure consistency and build skills. For example, they use color-coded scoops for portion control and have detailed visual guides for tasks like weighing dough. Brewability has a YouTube channel to share these resources with a wider audience.Commitment to inclusivity doesn't stop with their staff. The entire restaurant is designed to be as accessible as possible. They have Braille on the doors and soda machine, a sensory room for those who need a quiet space, a vibrating dance floor to feel the music and a full range of adaptive dining tools like weighted utensils and plate guards. As they celebrate their ninth anniversary, Fixter is exploring franchising to expand the impact and continuing to advocate for the disabled community.

Host Radell Lewis breaks down every candidate running for Ohio Governor in 2026, cutting through the noise to give you the facts that matter. What You'll Learn: Vivek Ramaswamy (Republican) is proposing to eliminate Ohio's state income tax and lower property taxes to reverse the exodus of young Ohioans. He's pushing for increased energy production through fracking and nuclear plants, K-12 education improvements, tougher penalties for repeat criminal offenders (including psychiatric institutionalization), and promises to restore "open dialogue" in Ohio politics. Philip Funderburg (Republican) is a 10th-generation Ohioan and insurance agent from Englewood running on a deportation-focused platform. He's targeting "anchor babies, Haitians, and illegals" in his campaign messaging and frequently posts about Ramaswamy. While aligned with Trump's agenda, Funderburg wants to release the Epstein files. Jacob Chiara (Democrat) is a former Republican now running as a Democrat because he says the GOP "no longer exists" as he knew it. His platform includes boosting small businesses, fully funding public schools, expanding healthcare access, ending pay-to-play politics, and investing in crime prevention. Chiara criticizes both Ramaswamy and Acton, positioning himself as an outsider tired of "politics as usual." Dr. Amy Acton (Democrat), Ohio's former health director, is prioritizing lowering everyday costs for Ohioans including groceries, gas, healthcare, and energy bills. She's committed to fully funding public schools, strengthening Ohio's economy, improving public safety, and addressing corruption in the Statehouse that she says "caters to billionaires and special interests." “This really is the full motivation for my having written the memoir. I want people to know what the process is like; not only what the process is like but what the feelings are that don't really make you think of psychoanalysis as a way of changing your life. We're just living and hoping that things will change without really taking account of the fact that we could be living better lives and in a better way. I began to think of the ways of the world and the wickedness in it. There's so many things that we do to keep us going - me and my aphrodisiacs, and I think other people doing other things just to divert them from the misery and unhappiness that they feel. I don't know how often that's looked at or discussed, so I hope the book does open that up a little bit.” Episode Description: We begin with Beverly's description of her early years of feeling lost and the consequent self-destructive patterns she replayed. Years of sensation-seeking led her to become "exhausted, limp, tarnished, and each time, more profoundly lost." She "landed on an analyst's couch in Little Venice, a section of London. I was paying for someone to recognize me. She did." Beverly shares her analytic journey with us and how vital her discovery of 'kindness' was, first from the outside and then from within. We discuss the early death of her father, her mother's depression and the devotion of her older brother. She closes with "Like life, psychoanalysis is a continuing process. It doesn't stop...issues crop up, new feelings arise...we better understand what those feelings are telling us, and how to make use of them in an environment we have been able to choose for ourselves. And so it goes…" Our Guest: Beverly Kolsky, MSW has worked as a psychotherapist for more than forty years both in America and in England. She trained as a psychoanalyst with the New York Institute for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology also and received training in London where she worked under the auspices of the Tavistock Clinic and the Institute of Marital Studies. Her work has been published in two journals: Mind Consiliums and Voices: Art and Science of Psychotherapy. She had two psychoanalytic experiences in two countries with analysts of two different orientations. Her motivation for writing the book as a memoir was to let others in the community know the transformative and enduring power of psychoanalysis. She was in private practice in Englewood, N.J. and now lives, mostly retired, in the northern Adirondacks. Recommended Readings: Jung, C.G. 1963. Memories, Dreams, Reflections. A Life of Meaning After a Bad Start in Chicago. Growing up in the South Side of Chicago is no easy path, and for Samia Young, the early chapters of her life were filled with violence, instability, and heartbreak. Born into a family plagued by substance abuse and domestic violence, she witnessed things no child ever should. Samia is the guest on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast, available for free on their website, on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most podcast platforms. “I had what many would describe as a tumultuous, abusive, and traumatic childhood,” Samia recalls. “There were days I truly didn't know if I'd make it out alive.” The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast promoted across their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. Her neighborhood was one of many that frequently made the news, as Chicago's South Side has long carried a reputation for crime, poverty, and struggle. For Samia, the dysfunction inside her home only magnified the challenges outside of it. “I would be lying if I told you that I always knew that I would make it out. That I never felt like throwing in the towel,” she admits. Look for supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . Life on the South Side To understand Samia's story, it helps to know the environment she grew up in. The South Side of Chicago is one of the city's three major sections and is geographically the largest. Rich with cultural history, diverse neighborhoods, and deep community ties, it is also an area marked by stark contrasts, where middle-class and affluent families live only blocks away from neighborhoods struggling with poverty and crime. Areas like Hyde Park, home to the University of Chicago, and Kenwood or Beverly are often considered desirable places to live. But other parts of the South Side, such as Englewood and Grand Crossing, have been hit hard by systemic issues, unemployment, and gang violence. These were the realities shaping Samia's childhood. A Life of Meaning After a Bad Start in Chicago. Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other podcast platforms. “Growing up there, you learn to survive more than you learn to live,” she reflects. Hearing the Gospel for the First Time Amidst the turmoil, a flicker of light appeared when Samia was 14 years old. During one of the darkest seasons of her youth, she first heard the message of Jesus Christ. “The Gospel offered me a glimpse of hope,” she shares. “It was something that felt so far removed from my life, yet it stirred something deep inside me.” The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website , Apple Podcasts , Spotify and most major podcast platforms. That spark, however, was not enough to erase the wounds of her childhood. As she transitioned into her teenage years and early adulthood, the pain she carried pulled her into cycles of instability. Poverty, brushes with the criminal justice system, and feelings of being lost became part of her reality. A Life of Meaning After a Bad Start in Chicago. “The wounds from my childhood made it difficult for me to truly know my identity and build the life I wanted,” Samia explains. A Turning Point at 24 Everything began to change at 24, when Samia had what she describes as a moment of clarity. Instead of letting her past dictate her future, she made a decision: to rebuild her life from the ground up. “It wasn't some overnight transformation,” she admits. “It was slow, painful, and full of setbacks. But it was also the most important decision I ever made.” The full podcast episode is streaming now on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Through perseverance, faith, and a relentless commitment to change, Samia began reshaping her path. She pursued education, steadied her personal life, and slowly replaced destructive habits with constructive ones. From Trauma to Triumph Today, Samia stands as a licensed attorney and business professional in Ohio. After moving from Chicago to Minnesota at 15, and eventually relocating to Cleveland in 2023, she has carved out a life that once seemed impossible. A Life of Meaning After a Bad Start in Chicago. Her transformation is not just about professional success, but about reclaiming her voice, her identity, and her future. Her story resonates across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and beyond. “I want people to know that your beginning does not have to define your ending,” she says. “Yes, I started in trauma. Yes, I lost myself for a time. But I also found my way back.” Samia's Story in Print Her powerful story is captured in her book, Samia, Come Forth!—available through her website samiayoung.com.
