On a cold March evening in 2023, police in Englewood, Colorado responded to a 911 call from 81-year-old Reginald Maclaren. Inside his upscale apartment, they uncovered a scene so brutal, it would briefly dominate headlines before vanishing just as quickly. The victims were Reginald's wife and daughter. They were two women who lived quietly, knew no one, and left behind almost nothing. It was their bodies, and the way they were found, that told the horrifying story of their deaths.Get instant access to all episodes, including premium unreleased episodes, commercial-free at swordandscale.com

Our guest is Eric Hotchkiss, an interdisciplinary designer, engineer, and educator based in Chicago, and the founder of Made in Englewood — a design-build practice grounded in the belief that communities should shape their own spaces and tell their own stories. In this episode, Eric speaks with host Christian Solorzano about growing up in Englewood, where he and his friends made go-karts from garbage can axles, built clubhouses from construction site scraps, and figured out how to make nearly everything they needed. He reflects on how that upbringing — and a father who taught him to make things with his hands — quietly became the foundation for his entire practice.Eric talks about the origins of Made in Englewood, why he almost didn't name it that, and what it really means to design with a community rather than for one. He shares how artifacts — murals, installations, basketball backboards nailed into alley walls — carry the stories of neighborhoods that history might otherwise overlook, and why that idea drives everything he makes. The conversation covers his work designing a youth-led miniature golf course in North Lawndale, his ongoing community work on Chicago's South Side, and what's coming next — an Afro-diasporic outdoor kitchen and gathering space he's building in Englewood. Eric also opens up about what makes him angry, what inspires him, and why he thinks this moment — as uncertain as it is — might be exactly the right time to be making things.Music by the band Eighties Slang.

Chicago is one of the most influential cultural cities in the United States, known for its distinctive blend of architecture, visual arts, music, theater, and deeply rooted neighborhood culture. Widely recognized as the birthplace of modern architecture, it is also home to one of the nation's strongest museum ecosystems and a vibrant grassroots arts scene that celebrates the city's diverse ethnic communities. Chicago's global cultural impact spans music — from Blues to House— renowned theater and murals, street art, and festivals. The city's cultural ecosystem fuels its identity, community, and economic vitality. This ecosystem plays a critical role in economic development by creating jobs, attracting investment, and supporting local businesses. Arts and culture strengthen communities by ensuring diverse voices and stories are visible and valued, helping neighborhoods thrive both economically and socially. In this episode of Trust Talks, we explore how arts and culture drive and stimulate economic opportunities for a community and elevate the voices and stories of underrepresented communities, while asking what it takes to sustain a thriving, equitable cultural sector. Philanthropy, both institutional and individual, is critical for a thriving arts economy, and we will explore this as one of the essential elements of a thriving city. Hosted by Iona Calhoun-Battiste, the Trust's senior director of collective power, the conversation features Englewood artist and activist Janell Nelson; David Feiner, co-founder of the Albany Park Theater Project; and Nora Daley, board chair of the Illinois Arts Council. Together, they discuss why investing in both legacy institutions and community-based organizations is essential to Chicago's future. This episode was produced by Juneteenth Productions and recorded at The Auburn Gresham Healthy Lifestyle Hub.

Episode 171 DNA ID Replay Helene Pruszynski While Jess is on winter break preparing new episodes of DNA ID for 2026, we are airing some of our favorite one part episodes weekly in what we call 'DNA ID Replay' episodes. These Replay episodes will air every week while on break with the exception of Christmas week. In this episode, we explore the case of Helene Pruszynski which originally aired in episode 12. In 1980, ambitious college student Helene Pruszynski was abducted from Englewood, Colorado. Her body was found in a remote field the next day. She had been raped and stabbed in the back. Police had multiple suspects, and a series of similar attacks, but were never able to gather enough information to arrest anyone. Decades later, a DNA profile from Helene's crime scene would lead them to her killer. He was living thousands of miles away, using another name. A confiscated beer mug would prove to be his downfall, as his DNA linked him to the crime. This episode brings together the science, the medicine, and the lived experience behind BRCA mutations. Emily Goldberg, JScreen's Director of Genetic Counseling Services, breaks down what these mutations are, how they're inherited, and what the actual cancer risks look like. Dr. Melissa Frey, a GYN oncologist at Cornell who works closely with high-risk families, walks us through what happens after someone tests positive — from screening to risk-reducing surgeries to the big conversations around fertility and timing. We also hear from Heather Boussi, who shares her powerful story of living with both BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. She talks about diagnosis, surveillance, surgeries, and how this all shaped her family-building decisions. Lastly, we look at what BRCA means for men, how that journey differs, and why PGT can still be an option. If you or someone you love is navigating this, we close with places to turn for support: JScreen, Sharsheret, I Was Supposed To Have A Baby, and Stardust (links below). The city of Chicago owns thousands of vacant lots, and more than 80 percent of those parcels are in communities where the population is at least 80 percent Black. That's according to a report from the Institute for Housing Studies at DePaul University. Residents and organizations are investing in these lots to improve the community. Last episode, we learned about how complicated it can be for individual homeowners to buy a vacant lot in their neighborhood. Today, we focus on an organization that is acquiring these types of spaces. Anton Seals, Jr. is the co-founder of Grow Greater Englewood, an organization that is doing innovative work on abandoned areas on the South Side. In the name of land sovereignty and building lasting community, he and his colleagues are transforming vacant lots into urban farms, a farmers market and a nature trail.
