Jake and Carl talk about the differences between pricing projects hourly and pricing projects on a per project basis. This is a very popular topic of debate and we came to an interesting conclusion. Listen to find out how we each price things ourselves and what our thoughts are. We also test out Blab.im for the first time and create our first video cast of the podcast for Rookie Designer. It was a fairly good experience and the we got a lot of help from the great community there. Both Carl and I are thinking this may be an avenue that we continue to try out. You can find the Blab.im stream here: Rookie Designer Eps 147 on Blab.im We have also launched a Rookie Designer YouTube Channel which will have our more formal video cast based on the Blab. Its see you later... not goodbye. Rookie Designer will be taking a 3 month hiatus. In that time I will be assessing my situation and making the final decision about whether this podcast will continue on after the break. This is a real episode though. One of the new trends out there is to make a simplified One Page Portfolio. We'll talk about what it takes to make one and why you might want to. We'll also touch upon strategies for collecting your files for output and working with the printer. What is Quality training? I got a dose of it recently at my full time job, and it wasn't half bad. Basically its a set of rules or guidelines that help facilitate a productive work environment. There are several things you probably do on a daily basis that are not exactly necessary, or perhaps could be done in a more efficient way to improve your workflow, and as a result, make you more productive. It also sets the stage for working and communicating with others in a way that benefits each party and the end result of your work. Keys to the Game: Fill an object in InDesign: Fill object with gradient: period (.) Fill object with last solid color: comma (,) Fill object with none: slash (/) Rookie Mistake Tip: When going for an interview we most times focus squarely on the skills we have and promoting those to no end. What we must remember though is that there is much more that goes into the selection of a candidate for a job. Companies are also very focused on your personal traits and how you will get along with the rest of the team or people you will be working closely with. This many times is just as important as how well you can use photoshop or dreamweaver, because it can spell the success or failure of a new employee. There are publications that just teach you how to make a website, and those are great too, but this book gives you history of the web, how it actually works, and why we design in a certain way. Best of all, once you have learned how to build a site, it also tells you how to get it up on the web live! The applications you use should be thought of as tools that aid you in bringing your brilliant design ideas to fruition. In the Bullpen: Kelby Training Try GoToMeeting for 45 days! Things have come a long way since the inception of the set top box, or TV. It used to be that you were forced to watch advertising in commercial breaks, but with the surge of TiVO and DVR users, advertisers must find new ways to get commercials in front of viewers. Today we'll take a look at this topic and how it may impact your career, or simply your TV viewing life.
