What's the best word to describe a hard-working freelance copywriter? How about feisty? On the 460th episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast, content strategist and author, Suzanne Bowness, shares the concepts from her new book appropriately called, The Feisty Freelancer. Click the play button below, or scroll down for a full transcript. Stuff to check out: The Feisty Freelancer Website The Feisty Freelancer Book The Copywriter Club Facebook Group The Copywriter Underground Full Transcript: Rob Marsh: What's the best adjective to describe a hardworking, client-pleasing, financially successful copywriter? How about feisty? This is The Copywriter Club Podcast. When it comes to freelancing, this is no one right way to do things. There are thousands of niches to serve. Millions of clients with millions of needs. There are hundreds of ways to find those clients and thousands more ways to solve their problems. But every writer who owns their own business has lots of things in common with others doing the same thing. And if you try to describe them… especially those freelancers who are actually finding clients, doing good work, and earning enough to make a living, well one word that comes to mind is feisty. The feisty freelancer brings energy to their work. They're not afraid to stand up for themselves or the clients they're writing for. And they even might be a little playful. The Feisty Freelancer is also the name of a new book written by content writer and former Think Tank member, Suzanne Bowness. Sue's book is a primer for freelancers of all kinds—not just writers—who want to do more than struggle for scraps. The feisty freelancer has what it takes to succeed. This is Sue's second appearance on the podcast. The first one happened almost three years ago. It's episode #319 if you want to check it out. Given Sue's expertise as a freelancer, it's probably not a coincidence that some of the ideas we talked about then made it into the book. But it's been a while since we had that discussion, so I took the opportunity to ask Sue about the topics she covers in her book. Things like pitching, working with corporate clients, marketing a writing business, strategies for being productive and getting things done. We even talked about whether freelancing is something people should be considering at all today. I think you'll like what she had to share. Before we get to my interview with Sue, this episode is brought to you by The Copywriter Underground. The Underground includes monthly coaching and expert workshops, an accountability group to keep you moving toward your goals, and more than 70 different workshops to help you gain the skills and strategies you need to build your business. Recently I asked a new member why she joined the Underground and she said she did it for the copy reviews. She wanted feedback on her work to help her improve her writing. And where many writing coaches charge as much as $1500 to look at a single sales page, you can get unlimited reviews in The Underground for less than $90 a month. Honestly this just might be the best value in the copywriting world. You can learn more by visiting thecopywriterclub.com/tcu-2. And now, my interview with Sue Bowness… Transcript is underway...

It's never too late to start building a financial plan, but the more time you have to make your money work for you, the better. Developing good financial habits early on increases your chances of achieving financial independence, and starting in your 20s is even more beneficial. Links: Start your savings journey with Triangle's Goal Builder tool Start your investment journey with Triangle's Financial Planning services Check out TCU University for financial education tips and resources! Follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter! Learn more about Triangle Credit Union Transcript: Welcome to Money Tip Tuesday from the Making Money Personal podcast. Many Americans often delay building a financial plan until they're much further along in life, typically waiting for unexpected circumstances to push them into action. This habit of postponing critical decisions can create unnecessary stress and limit our ability to grow wealth. Instead of taking charge, we allow life's pressures to dictate our financial choices, which can hinder long-term success. If you're in your early, mid, or late 20s, now is the perfect time to prioritize your financial future. Don't wait for a life event to motivate you! Starting your financial journey now enables your money to grow and compound over time, giving you a distinct advantage. Take the initiative to outline your financial goals. By working to develop healthy financial habits early on, you'll empower yourself to make informed decisions that will lead to lasting financial security. The actions you take today will pave the way for a brighter future—don't hesitate to seize this opportunity! Here are a few practical things you can do in your 20s to start building wealth early: PAY YOURSELF FIRST – Make it a point to develop good saving habits. Whether you're working part-time while in school or recently graduated and working full-time, whenever you get your paycheck, set aside a portion of your income into a savings account for emergencies or other savings goals. Any percentage is good, but somewhere around 10% is a widely accepted rule of thumb. Use a savings too like Triangle's Goal Builder tool within online and mobile banking to start your savings plan. START INVESTING EARLY – Investing early in your 20s is one of the smartest financial moves you can make. The most significant advantage is compound growth—your money earns returns, and those returns earn returns, snowballing over time. Starting early also gives you more time to recover from market fluctuations, build wealth gradually, and potentially retire earlier or with more financial freedom. Explore financial resources, such as books, or connect with a financial professional to help you set up a solid investment portfolio. If you're ready to an investment journey, get started with Triangle's Financial Planning services. Visit trianglecu.org to learn more and get in touch! AVOID BAD DEBT - Not all debts are created equal. Some are better than others. Bad debts are types of borrowing that do not contribute to building wealth or generating future income. They often come with high interest rates and are used to purchase depreciating items like clothes, electronics, or luxury goods that lose value quickly. Unlike good debt, which can be an investment in your future (like student loans or a mortgage), bad debt can trap you in a cycle of repayment without long-term benefits. Avoiding bad debt is important because it protects your credit score, reduces financial stress, and allows you to focus on saving and investing for your future. LIVE BELOW (OR WITHIN) YOUR MEANS – Find a way to manage your money in a way that keeps you from overspending. Practicing good financial management habits can help reduce excessive spending, which might interfere with savings goals and even lead to increased debt. Understand your income and set up a budget that covers your living expenses, encourages saving, and allocates some money for fun, discretionary spending. Adopting frugal living, such as cooking at home instead of eating out, reducing food delivery services, and avoiding impulse purchases, is a great way to ensure you're living within your means and avoiding lifestyle creep. BUILD MULTIPLE STREAMS OF INCOME – In your 20s, you have a unique opportunity to explore various skills that can lead to extra income streams. As you build your career experience, seize the opportunity to diversify your earnings. If you're training to become a teacher, consider tapping into the lucrative world of online tutoring as a side gig. Additionally, if you possess talents in writing, graphic design, video editing, or social media management, platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, and Freelancer are excellent avenues to generate extra income. With so many exciting options at your fingertips, you can boost your revenue while simultaneously refining your skills and expertise. Let me ask you something. How much frustration are you actually willing to tolerate in your life? Really think about it. Because most people don't set out to live in a state of constant irritation. But over time, without even realizing it, they start treating feeling frustrated like it's just a normal part of their life. Deadlines are constantly being missed. Meetings that should've been emails. Team members who don't provide you with information on time. Kids who won't listen. Partners who "forget" things you've reminded them about 14 times. Does any of this sound familiar? You don't even realize how much of this you're holding onto until it starts to creep into almost every area of your life. Your work, your evenings, your energy, and your ability to breathe at the end of the day. This episode is all about recognizing what frustration is really costing you and how to finally stop losing the control you have over your emotions to everything and everyone around you. If you're a freelancer, creative studio, or small business taking on clients, having a standard contract template isn't just smart—it's essential. In this episode, I break down why every working professional should start with a clear, customizable agreement: it speeds up onboarding, protects your work, and sets the tone for a professional relationship. I also share why it's a red flag when larger companies claim they “do this all the time” but don't have a contract of their own. Plus, I offer tips for what to include in your template and how to respond when a client doesn't have one. Trust me—your future self (and your bank account) will thank you.

What if building a business didn't require burnout, hustle culture, or 80-hour workweeks? In this episode of The Aspiring Solopreneur, we chat with Amanda Bourbonais—copywriter, wellness advocate, and self-proclaimed OG Health-First Freelancer—about how a health crisis reshaped her definition of success and led her to build a thriving six-figure business…with plenty of time for naps.Amanda shares how to manage client expectations with grace, raise your rates with confidence, and why prioritizing your well-being isn't just possible—it's profitable. Whether you're managing chronic illness or just sick of glorifying the grind, this episode is a must-listen for solopreneurs who want to thrive without sacrificing their health. Okay, this might be the craziest offer we've ever made. We're giving away a solopreneur platform that normally costs five hundred dollars a year…For twenty-five bucks. And not for a month, not for a year… forever. All you have to do is pre-order our new book: Solopreneur Business for Dummies. When we first went solo, we thought we could just Google our way through it. But the advice out there? It was built for startups with teams and money, not someone trying to do it all themselves. We kept thinking: “There's gotta be a better way.”So we made one. LifeStarr Premier is the system we wish we had back then: the tools, the strategy, the community, all in one place.Go to book.lifestarr.com to lock it in.This deal goes away when the book drops, October 6, 2025, and it's not coming back.Pre-order the book.

Freelancers are the secret ingredient to scaling your floral business without burning out—but managing them isn't always easy. In this episode, Jen pulls back the curtain on how she's built a thriving freelance team that supports her weddings, events, and installations. From creating a welcoming studio environment to setting clear expectations and having those tough conversations when needed, you'll walk away with actionable strategies to lead with confidence and kindness. If freelancers are part of your business—or you want them to be—this episode will help you hire, train, and retain the right people so you can step fully into your role as the CEO.
Hard to explain. Not specific enough. Too wide an audience. Freelancers kinda suck at crafting offers. Even the good ones. Especially the good ones. If your best-fit clients cannot easily repeat back who you help, the results you promise, and how you deliver it… You're probably doing this wrong. We've worked with hundreds of freelancers at this point, and if WE have no idea what the heck it is you do… How are your clients gonna know? Congratulations, you just killed the sale with confusion. In this week's episode, I bring on our Clients by Design coach Stephen Hutson to break down the five pieces every great offer needs. We show you: Why your Franken-service is repelling clients How to instantly raise your rates without changing your service The one litmus test to see if your offer actually makes sense Crafting a great offer is both an art and a science, and it's one of the first steps to building a Client Acquisition Machine. Get this right, and great clients will instantly know what you do, why you're worth the price, and how to say “hell yes.” Get this wrong, and you'll keep selling the what… while they walk away confused about the why. In this episode, I dive into the fascinating story of Freelancer Magazine's innovative hybrid membership model with founder and editor Sophie Cross. We explore how an independently published print magazine not only survives but thrives by blending traditional publishing with a thriving online membership and community for creative freelancers. From virtual coworking sessions to exclusive member directories and content, I uncover the secrets behind building a sustainable, community-driven membership alongside a premium print product.Whether you're a membership owner, a publisher, or just love creative business ideas, there's a lot to learn from Sophie's journey. In this episode:What does the membership offering at Freelancer Magazine include beyond the print and digital publication, and how are these elements structured for members? How did the transition from a print-only magazine to a hybrid membership model come about, and what evolved along the way?In what ways has the online community and member features impacted retention, member engagement, and the direction of the magazine? How are marketing strategies for Freelancer Magazine adapted to suit both the traditional print side and the dynamic online membership community?Key Quotes & Takeaways:"Virtual just seemed to make more sense. It's really accessible to people. We started doing some virtual co-working and it just took off - it's really popular. We probably get between 15 and 30 people every morning, and when volunteer hosts started running the sessions, it began running itself. Some people join the membership just for that community, while the magazine becomes a nice add-on.""We actually don't have a Facebook group or a circle group - and that's intentional because other communities do that well. The magazine has become the hero product, but it's all about getting the community connected in different ways""Because we're relatively small, with about a thousand paid subscribers and 5,000 in the newsletter community, I can personally reach out and offer solutions - like a complimentary digital copy if someone's struggling financially. That kind of one-to-one feedback is really, really nice, and chasing specific churn percentages isn't of interest to me right now."Related LinksFreelancer MagazineConnect with Sophie Cross on LinkedInThank You For ListeningWe really appreciate you choosing to listen to us and for supporting the podcast. If you're great at what you do… If people look up to you, hire you, refer you… And you're still struggling with client acquisition… You know what you SHOULD be doing. So what's holding you back? Sometimes, after being so good at what you do for so long, the idea of starting something you might not be great at right away can feel uncomfortable. We forget what it's like to be a newbie, making mistakes. And now? That fear of sucking again is keeping you stuck. I get it… “marketing” can feel like a wild west with zero rhyme or reason. Paid ads? I could end up donating money to Zuck for nothing. Building funnels and automations? Seems complicated. So it's easier to stick with what you know. Even if it's not working like it used to. How much is that inaction costing you? How much longer can you afford to NOT fix this? But guess what… The people who grow the fastest are the ones willing to look dumb for a while. Willing to dare to suck. This week's episode is all about that feeling (and why being okay with sucking again is often the first step toward real growth.)
