POPULARITY
Some of the most outrageous stories about President Biden are originating from a single, unverified source. On this week's On the Media, hear about the shadowy organization that's influencing election narratives. Plus, factual errors are at the heart of a recent Supreme Court decision. Learn how we can reform the system.[01:00] Host Brooke Gladstone interviews Judd Legum, author of Popular Information, about how a rightwing outlet is presenting itself as a neutral news source, all the while pushing coordinated messaging about President Biden.[18:04] Host Micah Loewinger speaks to Mark Joseph Stern, senior writer at Slate, about the factual errors in a recent Supreme Court ruling concerning guns.[35:48] Micah interviews Allison Orr Larsen, professor of law at William and Mary, about how so many contested facts reach the highest court via amicus briefs. Plus, how to reform the so-called “amicus machine.”Further reading:“Sinclair floods local news websites with hundreds of deceptive articles about Biden's mental fitness,” by Judd Legum“Clarence Thomas' Opinion Legalizing Bump Stocks Is Indefensible,” by Mark Joseph Stern“The Supreme Court Decisions on Guns and Abortion Relied Heavily on History. On today's program, we have news from ACSI – the Association of Christian Schools International. They're growing and changing, and not all of those changes are for the better. I'll explain later in the program. We also have the latest news from Asbury University, where a revival started that is now sweeping the country. And we take a look at The John Ankerberg Show. The popular apologetics teacher is under fire for his use of private jets and lavish travel. We begin today with the latest from the United Methodist Church. Bishop Scott Jones isn't the first United Methodist bishop to join the Global Methodist Church since the theologically conservative denomination launched in May, but his exit from the UMC has arguably caused the greatest stir. FINAL THOUGHTS: I want our listeners to know that if they give to MinistryWatch during the month of March, they'll receive a copy of my book “Faith Based Fraud: Learning From the Great Religious Scandals of our Time.” We've offered this book in the past, but it's been more than a year since the last time we offered it, and we have literally tens of thousands of new people on our email list, so we're making it available again. It's our thank you gift for a donation of any size to MinistryWatch this month. Just go to the MinistryWatch website and hit the donate button at the top of the page. The producers for today's program are Rich Roszel and Jeff McIntosh. We get database and other technical support from Stephen DuBarry, Emily Kern, Rod Pitzer, and Casey Sudduth. Writers who contributed to today's program include Ryan Gabrielson, J. David McSwane, Jessica Eturralde, Dale Chamberlain, Kim Roberts, Phil Cooke, Fiona Morgan, Bob Smietana, Steve Rabey, Emily McFarlan Miller, Christina Darnell, Rod Pitzer—and you, Warren. Special thanks to churchleaders.com and ProPublica for contributing material for this week's podcast. Until next time, may God bless you.
Sam hosts Meron Rapoport, editor of Local Call, to discuss his recent reporting on the conflict in Israel & Palestine for +972 Magazine. Then, they're joined by ProPublica reporters J. David McSwane & Ryan Gabrielson to discuss their recent piece "A Christian Health Nonprofit Saddled Thousands With Debt as It Built a Family Empire Including a Pot Farm, a Bank and an Airline". First Sam kicks off with President Biden's remarks in Virginia Beach yesterday, where he (smartly) reminded everyone that every single Republican during his State of the Union address stood up to protect social programs...and were on camera doing so. He pairs this with former President Trump, who seemingly has gotten his groove back, continuing to piledrive Ron DeSantis over his support for cutting so-called "entitlements." Then, Sam's joined by Meron as they dive into the recent demonstrations in Israel over the judicial "reforms" that President Netanyahu and his far-right coalition want to implement, as well as the tremendous violence that has occurred over the last few days in Israeli settlements. Meron goes so far as to consider this one of, if not the most combustible time in history internally within Israel. Then, David and Ryan join Sam to break down their new bombshell reporting in ProPublica about Liberty HealthShare, a healthcare sharing ministry that, under the auspices of providing health services as a religiously affiliated non-profit, avoided almost all regulatory scrutiny while committing massive amounts of fraud. And in the Fun Half, Sam and the gang touch on poor "Meatball" Ron DeSanctimonious trying to hit back (weakly) at Trump on Fox while Trump runs wild on Seb Gorka's program, the new China hysteria on Capitol Hill coming from FBI Director Wray on the lab leak and Rep. Matt Gaetz...spouting Chinese propaganda in a congressional hearing? And let's not forget Greg Gutfeld saying COVID didn't allow anyone to be racist! Also, Lindsey Graham gets hysterical about immigrants crossing the border and never leaving (a claim a NYTimes report directly refutes *this morning*). Paul Ryan and Charlie Sykes sit down for some reputation laundering about his membership on Fox's board, plus your IM's! We'd like to welcome you to the MinistryWatch podcast. Each week, MinistryWatch brings you news about Christian ministries, as well as the latest in charity and philanthropy, news that we examine from a Christian worldview perspective. Our goal is to help us become better stewards of the resources God has entrusted to us. On today's program, we look at St. Jude Children's Hospital. It's not a Christian ministry, but a lot of evangelicals donate to the organization, and the money is not always going to help children. We also look at a shake-up at WORLD Magazine. Finally, I offer a few thoughts about the podcast “The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill.” We begin today with news from San Antonio, Texas, where a rally at a church has drawn criticism for its use of the controversial “Let's Go Brandon” chant, and for other reasons. We'll be taking next week off from the podcast so we can enjoy Thanksgiving with our families. And, at the risk of shameless self-promotion, I'd like to mention that we are rapidly coming up on the year-end. Just six weeks to 2022. And, without belaboring the point too much, we need your financial support before year-end. MinistryWatch is different from many other news sites in that we take no money from the organizations we cover, we have no advertising on our site, and no paywall. All of our content is completely free. But we do depend on the generosity of people who believe in what we do. And, I've got to say, that if you're listening to this podcast, you're either a glutton for punishment, or you're a hard-core MinistryWatch fan. If the latter, I hope you'll consider a year-end gift so we can keep doing what we do. Just go to MinistryWatch.com and it the donate button at the top of the page. The producers for today's program are Rich Roszel and Steve Gandy. We get database and other technical support from Cathy Goddard, Stephen DuBarry, and Casey Sudduth. Writers who contributed to today's program include Nidhi Upadhyaya (?), Kim Roberts, Anne Stych, David Armstrong, Ryan Gabrielson, Mark Tooley, Bob Smietana, and Steve Rabey. Until next time, may God bless you.

This week we welcome Alexandra Natapoff to discuss the various problems with how misdemeanors are handled. Eighty percent of criminal cases filed in our countries are misdemeanors. There are so many places in the misdemeanor system where wrongful convictions are definitely taking place. The system lacks rigor and continues to be sloppy because of it. How powerful is the misdemeanor phenomenon? In the state system, do people think they get a fair trial for a misdemeanor? Is it a big deal to get a misdemeanor? Are misdemeanor fines a source of revenue? Who is profiting off of the state misdemeanor systems? What are the main ways to get a misdemeanor? What is probable cause?Further Reading:Punishment Without Crime: How Our Massive Misdemeanor System Traps the Innocent and Makes America More Unequal, written by Alexandra NatapoffBusted, by Ryan Gabrielson and Topher Sanders at ProPublicaMisdemeanors Matter #2: Alexandra Natapoff on a Legacy of Injustice, Center For Court InnovationRelated Content:Thin Blue Lies: How Pretextual Stops Undermine Police Legitimacy, Free Thoughts PodcastThe Problem of Police Misconduct, Free Thoughts PodcastCruel Alternatives: Respect for Law or Respect for Justice, written by Aeon Skoble See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

For months, Jason Pohl and Ryan Gabrielson have been investigating inmate deaths in county jails. This McClatchy/ProPublica collaboration found that in-custody deaths have risen substantially since California began shifting responsibility for thousands of offenders from state prisons to county jails. For a local sheriff, Joe Arpaio can’t seem to stay out of the national news. The longtime Maricopa County Sheriff made headlines again this summer when, in the wake of a criminal conviction, he was was pardoned by President Trump. But Arpaio’s story goes back nearly two decades. On this episode we’re turning back the clock to the late 2000s, when reporter Ryan Gabrielson and Paul Giblin of the East Valley Tribunethe launched an investigation into some of the questionable things happening in Arpaio’s office. Their investigation would go on to win a Pulitzer Prize and change the conversation around "America’s toughest sheriff." EPISODE NOTES: bit.ly/2gDyO8S
