The Anchoress, Geoff Lloyd and Sara Gibbs discuss their favourite Paul McCartney moment with Chris Shaw.
Comedy writer Sara Gibbs and actor and writer JJ Green discuss the portrayal of autistic characters on TV and film and call for change. Half a century ago director Mike Bradwell rented a run-down house in Coltman Street, Hull, gathered a few actor-musicians and started work. Hull Truck Theatre was born. It went on to become one of the most successful and influential companies in the country and is now housed in a beautiful purpose-built theatre. Bradwell had strong views about theatre: plays should be about the kind of people you might meet in Hull, not dead kings. He wasn't keen on jokes, and even less on scripts. So it's a bit of an irony that to celebrate their 50 years Hull Truck has commissioned the playwright Richard Bean, who can't resist a gag - he wrote One Man Two Guvnors - and whose work is carefully wrought and written. Bean, who is from Hull, talks about his new play 71 Coltman Street which recreates the genesis of Hull Truck Theatre. Sheila Heti, acclaimed author of Motherhood, talks about the ideas behind her new novel Pure Colour, an experimental story following a woman's life through college, a love affair, and coming to terms with her father's death – whilst God considers creating a second draft of the world. When is a party not a party? As Boris Johnson slobbers out a pitifully insincere apology for No.10's Turbo Garden Rave 2020, has he finally lost the Tory Party as well as most of the country? Plus, Liz Truss: Portrait of a Woman Who's Dire. What makes Cosplay Thatcher run? And who would our panel put in the Lords? Comedy writer of HIGNFY fame Sara Gibbs is our special guest. “I can't pretend I'm not enjoying this absolute lying bastard getting his comeuppance… He is boxed in by his own bullshit.” – Ian Dunt “I've been to some bad parties but none so bad I thought they were work meetings.” – Naomi Smith” “Trying to get a COVID LFT is like trying to get a five star meal.” – Ian Dunt “In Liz Truss's infamous cheese speech you could see her brain going ‘Do a smile now.' I have no idea what's going on in there. She's naked ambition in a skin suit.” – Sara Gibbs “It's a lie within a lie within a lie, tumbling into oblivion.” – Ian Dunt “The mistake with Boris Johnson was treating him like a bumbling buffoon… We made him seem innocuous. I worry about doing the same with Liz Truss.” – Sara Gibbs “I'd rather Boris Johnson stayed there as a dead man walking… But the alternatives do look very, very beatable.” – Ian Dunt Back us at www.patreon.com/ohgodwhatnow Presented by Dorian Lynskey with Naomi Smith and Ian Dunt. Sara Gibbs has built a successful career, but also – like so many of us – experienced the challenges of being in the world as an autistic person. After enduring vicious bullying and social exclusion during her school days, and having some pretty horrendous experiences in the workplace, she decided to become a writer. After taking a comedy writing course she has since written for Dead Ringers, The News Quiz, The Daily Mash, The Now Show, The Mash Report and Have I Got News for You. She is also the co-founder of satirical women's magazine Succubus, the founder of The First Laugh Comedy Writing Competition for new writers and the presenter of The Aut-Hour Podcast. Diagnosed autistic at 30, she published her brilliant – and hugely relatable – memoir of life as an undiagnosed autistic woman, Drama Queen, in 2021. I devoured this book as soon as I got my hands on it, and I was so excited to talk to her for Squarepeg. We talked about all sorts of things, including ➡ Her childhood, bullying and her experience at a Steiner school ➡ Her difficult relationship with her dad, who she suspects may have been autistic too ➡ Dealing with a toxic workplace environment ➡ Finding her place in the world as a writer ➡ and The challenge autistic people in particular can face when trying to change careers Squarepeg is a podcast in which neurodivergent women, and trans and nonbinary people, explore navigating a neurotypical world and share their insights, challenges and successes. I hope that these conversations will be inspiring and thought provoking, open you up to new ways of thinking about being neurodivergent, and help you feel more connected to a worldwide community of people with similar experiences. I'm Amy Richards, and after being diagnosed autistic at the age of 37 I'm now on a mission to learn more about different perspectives and issues around being a neurodivergent adult in a world that feels like it doesn't quite fit. "This book is a message from autistic people to their parents, friends, teachers, coworkers and doctors showing what life is like on the spectrum," writes our guest, author Eric Garcia in We're Not Broken. "It's also my love letter to autistic people. For too long, we have been forced to navigate a world where all the road signs are written in another language.”Garcia, who is autistic, is a senior Washington correspondent for The Independent. He has worked as a writer and reporter covering politics at The Washington Post, The Hill, and the National Journal."My main point is autistic people are fine as they are," Eric tells us in this episode. “The idea that they are fundamentally flawed and failed human beings is simply not true... Instead of trying to cure autistic people, society should help them live fulfilling lives.”For many decades, people with autism have been stigmatized and subjected to harmful myths and wild conspiracy theories— all of them hurtful. We examine how they have been mistreated and ignored, and look at how to fix our misconceptions. Eric's new book has been greeted with positive reviews. The Washington Post calls it "outstanding", and a "call to include autistic people in the conversations that concern them." Recommendations: Jim praises "Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution" on Netflix — a documentary about a groundbreaking summer camp that galvanizes a group of teens with disabilities to help build a movement, forging a new path toward greater equality. As the Government abandons clear rules for “common sense” and “personal responsibility”, even Sajid Javid admits we're entering “uncharted territory”. We find out why Priti Patel's latest immigration regulations amount to one big xenophobic, mendacious grey area. Our special guest is Sara Gibbs, comedy writer for HIGNFY, Dead Ringers and The Mash Report and author of the memoir of her autism diagnosis Drama Queen. And friend of the podcast Gavin Esler risks his status as a Scot by telling us why he's been supporting England in the Euros. “What this means for asylum seekers is a decade of life with no safety at all and the constant threat of being returned to the country you fled from.” – Ian Dunt“OK the George Cross for the NHS is a lovely honour, but you can't pay your bills with honours.” – Sara Gibbs“What the unlocking policy is showing is that the Government are a set of moral delinquents with no capacity for sustained inquiry.” – Ian Dunt“Would any major business decide on a massive move by committing to the date before deciding what it is?” – Gavin Eslerwww.patreon.com/ohgodwhatnowPresented by Naomi Smith with Ian Dunt. As a woman with autism you're likely to receive a diagnosis much later in life than if you are a man with the condition. Why is that and what impact does a late diagnosis have? Kim Chakanetsa is joined by two autistic women who are speaking up about their experience of the condition and seeking to help others. Morénike Giwa Onaiwu is part of the Autism Women's Network in US. She says many of her early symptoms of autism were dismissed or ignored because she is Black and explains how autism can amplify stereotypes around Black women. Sara Gibbs is a British comedy writer and autistic. Labelled as a cry baby, scaredy cat and spoiled brat – she finally got a diagnosis in her thirties. She has written a book, Drama Queen, about trying to fit into a world that has often tried to reject her, and says that being on the spectrum doesn't have to be a barrier to a happy life full of love, laughter and success. 'It has taken me several years of exploration, but I am at a place now where I see autism as neither an affliction nor a superpower. It's just the blueprint for who I am. There is no cure, but that's absolutely fine by me. To cure me of my autism would be to cure me of myself.' During the first thirty years of her life, comedy script writer Sara Gibbs had been labelled a lot of things - a cry baby, a scaredy cat, a spoiled brat, a weirdo, a show off - but more than anything else, she'd been called a Drama Queen. No one understood her behaviour, her meltdowns or her intense emotions. She felt like everyone else knew a social secret that she hadn't been let in on; as if life was a party she hadn't been invited to. Why was everything so damn hard? Little did Sara know that, at the age of thirty, she would be given one more label that would change her life's trajectory forever. That one day, sitting next to her husband in a clinical psychologist's office, she would learn that she had never been a drama queen, or a weirdo, or a cry baby, but she had always been autistic. Drama Queen is both a tour inside one autistic brain and a declaration that a diagnosis on the spectrum, with the right support, accommodations and understanding, doesn't have to be a barrier to life full of love, laughter and success. It is the story of one woman trying to fit into a world that has often tried to reject her and, most importantly, it's about a life of labels, and the joy of ripping them off one by one.
