Podcaster supremo and (importantly for this episode) Beatles obsessive Geoff Lloyd joins Jude for a Songbook deep dive. Getting together to unpick Paul McCartney's recent bestseller The Lyrics, revelations abound. From Geoff telling Jude how his wife uses The Beatles as a carrot to get him to do stuff to whether Macca admits to watching bad films about himself. They discuss how hard it is to get McCartney off-script, the Beatles' skill at legacy-building and whether Geoff will admit to having a favourite Beatle. On June 18, along with four guests, we held a party for Paul McCartney on his 80th in front of a big crowd in the magical tented arena at Opera Holland Park in West London. This was a lot of fun from start to finish, fond memories, forgotten songs, new angles, personal meetings, fresh theories and fascinating unknown tales. In this second part of the show Danny Baker talks about a lost masterpiece, does the McCartney walk, fights the corner for some of his least loved songs, puts him in perspective, sings impressively and tells the Besame Mucho/TFI Friday story. And our last guest is Graham Gouldman who was writing big hits for the Hollies, the Yardbirds and many others in the ‘60s before he co-founded 10cc. How did songwriters react to a new Beatles single? What did he nick from Things We Said Today? What are the McCartney signatures? How is it humanly possible to play those bass parts and sing at the same time? This episode comes rammed with revelations about McCartney's life and songs and what he's meant to us over the years.Part One - https://shows.acast.com/word-in-your-ear-2/episodes/word-podcast-459-word-in-the-park-1 - features the broadcaster Geoff Lloyd and the writer Andy Miller.Subscribe to Word In Your Ear on Patreon and receive every future Word Podcast before the rest of the world - alongside a whole load more!: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On June 18 we laid on a celebration of all things McCartney on his 80th in the magical tented arena at Opera Holland Park in West London. People came from all corners of the globe. It turned out to be a feast of fond memories, forgotten songs, fresh perspectives, personal encounters, original theories and fascinating unknown tales. In this first half, David and Mark talk to the broadcaster Geoff Lloyd – who once had him on his radio show and gave him random instruments to see if he could get a tune out of them and part-written songs to finish off. Geoff was born in ‘73 and pieced together the McCartney story via an interesting route. His account of meeting him is electrifying. Our second guest is the writer, star of the literary world and co-host of the Backlisted podcast Andy Miller, onstage wearing very special McCartney-related clothes for a very special reason. Like all of us, he watched Get Back and was astonished by what he learnt about the way the band worked. Also in this episode… the effect of All My Loving on a 13 year-old, what our parents thought of the Beatles, Cynthia Lennon's lost letter and four of our favourite songs and why. Find a sunhat, fix a cold drink, pull up an imaginary deckchair and get stuck in …------------Subscribe to Word In Your Ear on Patreon and receive every future Word Podcast before the rest of the world - alongside a whole lot more!: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

I absolutely loved this interview. Whatever your preconceptions about politicians, please set them aside, because you're about to meet Ed Miliband: former leader of the Labour Party, current shadow business secretary, fellow podcaster and author of a new book, Go Big: How To Fix Our World. Ed joins me to discuss his failure to win the 2015 general election, suffering from anxiety, failing to get the degree he worked so hard for and a failure to keep his late father, the noted Marxist academic Ralph Miliband, alive. We touch on his family history - both his parents escaped Nazi Germany and many of his relatives were killed in the Holocaust - and we consider whether carrying the hopes and dreams of previous generations makes him feel more duty-bound to succeed. Along the way, we discuss therapy, competitive swimming with Alastair Campbell, political optimism, the power of big ideas, bacon sandwiches, Ed-stones, Milibae, sibling rivalry (yes, I do ask him how things are with his brother David), Boris Johnson, fatherhood and why he'll never win an argument with his wife. Ed, thank you for coming on How To Fail with such a generous spirit and for engaging so brilliantly with the premise. You're a mensch. * Go Big: How To Fix The World by Ed Miliband is out now and available to order here. You can listen to Reasons To Be Cheerful, his excellent podcast, co-hosted with comedian Geoff Lloyd here. * My new novel, Magpie, is out on 2nd September. In the final episode of series 3 of Fingers On Buzzers, Lucy and Jenny welcome erstwhile 'Eggheads' adversaries, Geoff Lloyd and Annabel Port, to represent podcast 'Adrift' in the finale of the pod mash-ups.Why DID Judith Keppel have beef with Geoff as a result of their 'Eggheads' appearance? How many vocalists of the group 'The Drifters' had in their 65 year history? And which A-lister was born with their own golf-ball sized twin on their shoulder? You'll find all of that out and MORE just by putting this episode in your ears! The FOB team are taking a short break over the summer, but we will be back in September 2020. Take care everyone, thanks for listening and we cannot wait to be back with you all again in the autumn. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Hey guys, we're back with another episode where we discuss the Black Lives Matter movement sparked by the tragic murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and so many others. It's been a discombobulating and exhausting time for many – for black people having to cope with “the emotional impact of watching white people wake up to racism in real-time” (which is articulated perfectly in this article https://metro.co.uk/2020/06/12/emotional-impact-watching-white-people-wake-racism-real-time-12839920/?ito=cbshare) and our white allies who are confronting their own white privilege, supremacy and looking for ways to change and re-examine their behaviour. There are already a number of resources and platforms intelligently discussing these issues much better than I ever could, and I personally felt fatigued and overwhelmed after the last few weeks with the amount of information my brain could intake, so I've decided to use the pod to discuss some books/TV shows/podcasts that I and my lovely housemates have consumed over the last year that we thought could be both entertaining AND continue these complex conversations about race and privilege. We were nervous about recording this episode and making sure we articulate ourselves in the right way but again, a lot of what we're learning is that we'll inevitably make mistakes and learning from them is part of the process – so forgive us! I'd love to hear people's thoughts and please like, share and subscribe if you enjoy the ep. Sending all my love to everyone during this difficult time – let's spread love guys! In introducing this session, which was inspired by David Hepworth's new book "Nothing Is Real" Mark Ellen said "I've know this man for over forty years and I've never won an argument with him". On this occasion the two of them were joined by old friends, writer Jude Rogers and broadcaster/podcaster Geoff Lloyd, to chew over some of David's theories, such as why the Beatles were underrated and why you should never play pop records at funerals, and to add a few of their own, which cover such topics as the girlfriend who changed the direction of popular music, the redundancy of the live album and the records that you should and shouldn't play at a wedding disco. A splendid time is guaranteed for all. Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
